I was not myself last night
Couldn't set things right with apologies or flowers
Out of place as a cryin' clown
Who could only frown and the play went on for hours
And as I lived my role, I swore I'd sell my soul for...
One love, who would stand by me (who would stand by me)
And give me back the gift of laughter (laughter)
Yeah and one love, who would stand by me (who would stand by me)
And after making love we'd...
Dream a bit of style
(Dream) we'd dream a bunch of friends
Dream each others smile
And dream it never ends
I was not myself last night
In the morning light I could see the change was showing
Like a child who was always poor
Reaching out for more, I could feel the hunger growing
And as I lost control, I swore I'd sell my soul for...
One love, who would sing my song (who would sing my song)
And fill this emptiness inside me
One love, who would sing my song (who would sing my song)
And lay beside me while we'd...
Dream a bit of style
(Dream) dream a bunch of friends
Dream each others smile
And dream it never ends
All my dreams are lost and I can't sleep
And sleep alone could ease my mind
All my tears have dried and I can't weep
Old emotions, may they rest in peace and...
Dream
Dream a bunch of friends
Rest in peace and dream
Dream it never ends
And as I live my role, I swear I'd sell my soul for...
One love, who would sing my song (who would sing my song)
Fill this emptiness inside me (hold on)
One love, who would sing my song (who would sing my song)
And lay beside me while we'd dream
Of the one love who would sing my song (who would sing my song)
And fill this emptiness inside me (of the)
One love who would sing my song (who would sing my song)
And lay beside me while we'd dream (of the)
Of the one love who would sing my song (who would sing my song)

Anybody who thinks the 1950s is the worst decade for film should honestly be shot out of a canon. That is a genuine pleb filter, all society would be so much better if it was only people who appreciated 50s films.

>Night of the Hunter
>The Cranes are flying
>Wild Strawberries

Those three films alone could suffice a whole lifetimes worth of kino viewing. 2015-2025 is arguably the worst decade of film history.

Just came back from watching Cat People (1942) at the cinema. Was a nice watch that I don't think I would be in a rush to watch at home but at the kinoplex was a very pleasant experience.

Honestly love nothing more than watching '40s films at the cinema. The lights go down and among the silhouettes of sunken heads you can just make believe you've been transported back to the past. Need to actually start talking to the cutes who go to these films alone.

>no one is saying that or even suggesting how to engage with art. that’s not even relevant here at all
Not true at all. You not only presupposed that I have a kind of burden of proof attached to expressing my opinion (because of apparent wrongness of it, according to you) which you don't in expressing yours, you indicated to me with your phrasing that it would likely be an impossible burden to meet.
>saying you don’t like a film with 0 discussion about it on a thread dedicated to film discussion on a message board
The thread's about more than that, but even granting that it isn't, it would only be retarded if that were all I did here, which is not the case. I don't see that there's anything wrong with expressing an opinion (here and there) that a film is basically so nothingy as to be justly dismissed and holding that its advocates need to convince people of that opinion of its value.

It's from a film called Mektoub featuring the actress Ophélie Bau that this one australian anon likes a lot, and since he bakes most threads he always makes the "queen of /film/" opening post featuring a screenshot of said actress from said film.
>>
>>218507351
And as >>218491549 mentions, there was a sequel to it which has a scene of her getting eaten out and cumming for real which screened once at Cannes in 2019 and has never been seen again due to the controversy (Bau complained that Kechiche broke his promise to let her see the scene before it was screened to see if she approved, and other sources complained that Kechiche got Bau and her then-boyfriend who shot the scene with her drunk to cooperate). A sequel to that sequel came out last year.

Can't be that hard to break into Kechiche's house and steal the files.
>>
>>218508532
Well, the second was released, just not theatrically. And it was complicated further by this latest sequel being released as "the true to sequel" to the first film Canto Uno, as if Intermezzo (the cunnilingus one) has just been retconned. That being said, people who have seen Canto Due say that it's ending can be read as giving the faintest of hints that all the nightclub shit in Intermezzo takes place after the events of Canto Due, so who the fuck knows. Kechiche said Intermezzo will never get a proper release in his lifetime, but that his successors might release it, but given that Bau's approval was central to getting Canto Due released after all these years, I can't imagine that she'd take that lying down.
>>

Which mightn't be too long given the recent stroke that apparently left him unable to speak.

>>
Honestly, I just wanna know why both of the Mektoub films are 3+ hours long. That's too much to ask when there doesn't appear to be actual substance behind either one, kinda like a sleazier overextended Noe flick.

Only Intermezzo is/was over 3 hours. Canto Uno is just under and Canto Due is a little under two and a half. I've only seen Canto Uno, but it honestly didn't feel too long. It flows well enough in its gentle slice of life rhythm.

I didn't even like arthouse cinema at 17, man. I watched some Tarkovsky around then and thought he was boring as shit. Go watch some Billy Wilder films. Sunset Boulevard is a good one.
>>
>>218517072
>billy wilder
i will check him out. thanks for the reply.
i liked the stalker and the mirror. i like arthouse, for whatever i have watched so far, because of the sensation it evokes in me. i just feel that they are made different and are a bit offbeat. i have watched a bunch of eric rohmer films. i liked them too. apart from this i have watched some wong kar wai, some kubrick, some kurosawa.
anons here seem pretty knowledgeable, or atleast the replies invoke that feeling.

The point I was trying to make is, don't worry about filling an invisible checklist or following an arbitrary chart made by some rando with no real credentials. Just check out stuff that looks interesting and be prepared to step out of your comfort zone every once in a while, and eventually you'll develop your own taste and sensibilities.
Just based on the names you cited, I'd suggest Dekalog, the miniseries (really a collection of made-for-TV films) by Kieslowski. It might be up your alley.
>>
>>218517284
>don't worry about filling an invisible checklist or following an arbitrary chart made by some rando with no real credentials
oh, for sure. i for one do not care what the list that is set in stone for arthouse filmmakers / films is. i just wanted a rough idea of what to watch. any films or filmmakers, that are noteworthy. afterall why not watch the best arthouse has to offer.
>Dekalog
noted anon. thanks again.
>>
>>218517044
>how do i start getting into /film/
You sit down and start watching stuff.
>is there a flowchart, a list of filmmakers / films
No. You need to find out what you like. Maybe go with what you like in mainstream cinema and then seek out better made alternatives.
Maybe not go off the deep end too soon. I.e. if you like surrealism, go with Lynch first before you try Resnais.
And, yeah, as the other anon said, Billy Wilder is a good stepping stone. Used to be mainstream, when Hollywood still tried. Hell, even Hitchcock could be considered halfway to arthouse by today's standards. Thing is, pursuing the Wilder path further (and deeper) lands you in German realism eventually, maybe German expressionism.
That's great in its own right, but a bit removed from the examples you named in your other post.
Well, Kubrick is a thing of his own anyway. He was probably a bit of an (imdiagnosed) autist too, so maybe that's why you resonate well with his style.

Long story short ... just explore a bit. You know better what to watch than any of us. You know yourself best.

>Although it’s titled Sentimental Value, Joachim Trier’s film is really about domestic humiliation. That’s why the Norwegian import was given nine Academy Awad nominations — among the highest count ever for a non-English-language film. It’s up against Sinners, One Battle After Another, and Marty Supreme, three contrasting films about broken American families that are so miserable they make Sentimental Value seem, well, sentimental. Yet Sentimental Value is miserable, too. Reviewers and the Academy congratulate Trier for confirming their unhappiness about life, art, and the movies.

>The barely intact Borg family of artists in Sentimental Value fascinates post–Rob Reiner Hollyweird. Gustav exploits that trauma, basing his new project on personal tragedy partly filmed in the family’s stately Fanny & Alexander–style mansion. This attempt to blend artifice with creative blockage captures contemporary malaise — the Borgs are so self-absorbed (Nora suffers sexual anxiety and stage fright, Agnes fears for her own son being manipulated) that they offend propriety. Borg betrays his daughters through artistic (emotional) incest by replacing them with a compliant American actress played by Elle Fanning, putting convenience over family cohesion.

>The surname Borg recalls Ingmar Bergman’s semi-autobiographical, family-based psychodrama Wild Strawberries. Sentimental Value is mistaken for the art-movie inquiry of cinema’s great psychological artists Bergman and Carl Dreyer. Trier even dares an ersatz Persona face-morphing sequence minus the aesthetic tension of Bergman’s connection of style to morality; instead, he favors a facile, nihilistic, twisted examination. (It’s also inferior to Olivier Assayas’s family tale Sentimental Destinies).
>>
The Grandfathers of the Nothing
>>
>>218520016
>Trier always traffics in psychological artifice. That was his problem with The Worst Person in the World, which congratulated the self-indulgence of a Millennial career girl. (Reinsve’s pathological narcissist was praised in Obama’s annual culture-czar edict.) The Oscar embrace of this Bergman pastiche indicates that Millennial Hollywood doesn’t know a real earthquake from merely a shock.

>What’s the sentimental value of a film that trivializes Western culture? Agnes confesses, “I rarely watch films anymore.” Since Trier’s best sequence is a clip from Gustav’s purported masterpiece that featured Agnes as a child on a train carrying her away from a sibling, Agnes’s indifferent attitude suggests a self-punishing refusal.

>The Borgs’ sentimental self-appraisal derives from unresolved anguish superficially linked to WWII — the discovery of the grandmother’s concentration camp records. Trier’s overrated “insight” highlights past grievance while ignoring modern political crises, whether J6 political prisoners or European censorship, that might force contemporary political consciousness to account. This historical reference lacks the rigor of Rob Tregenza’s obscure yet probing The Fishing Place, a more exacting drama about Western war guilt, set in Telemark, Norway, minus the trash appeal of Trier’s melodramatic Oscar-bait approach. Maybe Oscar voters simply like the title Sentimental Value because it lets them think they still care about principles and ethics. Not since Hollywood mistook Haneke’s sardonic mortality film L’Amour to be a love story have Hollywood bumpkins been so bamboozled.
