What's with old TV shows being released in 4K? Most of them were broadcast at 480i so I don't really see the point>>218668410Well if I have a 4k blu-ray then I have a 4k capable device to watch it while if I have a DVD I can just slide it in wherever and watch it on my ps2 plugged into a CRT for example. Also it's cheaper.
because n*rmies who don't nerd out on boring technical details think "4k = better quality" and the marketing department says "everything's 4k these days, we need 4k seinfeld" to make sales
>>218677584i don't know about this set, but since Seinfeld was shot on film, they could theorically rescan the original footage in higher definition than it was originally broadcasted.
Sopranos 4k never
4k Buffy when4k Xena when4k DS9 when
>>218677584Elaine's cleavage in 40k
>>218677584It was shot on film. There's no reason why it shouldn't be released in 4k.
>>218677961>Elaine as a Slaneesh worshipper
>>218677584>>218677663Seinfeld was shot on film rather than videotape, so the 4K release would probably look quite nice. Another advantage of that release would be its maintaining the correct 4:3 aspect ratio over the standard Bluray/Netflix's cropping to 16:9 (doesn't matter that much in a sitcom but nerds tend to be anal about that stuff).
>>218678043>>218677663This, plus the fact there's no special effects which usually get masted at the lowest resolution (except for a few green screens) means that almost every single episode can be shown in 4KAs for the cropping from 4:3 to 16:9, now THAT i cannot support
>>218677584it makes sense if the series was shot on film, but for a sitcom it still sounds like an overkill
DVD for TV shows blu-ray TV movies and shows after 20084K for theatrical moviessimple as
>>218677584Film is film. Just because it was once broadcast as a duped videotape from your local affiliate doesn't mean that's the way to watch it.
>>218677641it's also to resell the same box set to hardcore fans for the third time, after they have already bought it on dvd and bluray.
>>218677756It died on da vine
>>218677584To make more money. Do you even know how Jews operate?
>>218678198Technically it would be in 16:9 being shot on film, but idk if they would release the full frame. They may have shot it with technical equip and the edges of setc etc being in the full frame and knowing they would be cropping it to air in 4:3.
>>218677829>4k DS9 whenThey would have to completely redo all the cgi, so no DS9 and no Voyager.
>>218677961>Elaine's cleavage in 40kWith random bits of metal and scarring?
>>218680047Film is naturally in a 4:3 ratio, unless matted anon
>>218678177>doesn't matter that much in a sitcomi think there were a few scenes in malcolm in the middle that didn't make sense in 16:9 because you could see that there was nobody outside of the 4:3 frame.
>>218680047no, it was shot in 1.37:1 and cropped for 4:3 for broadcasting.https://ultrahd.highdefdigest.com/140136/seinfeldthecompleteseries4kultrahdbluray.html
>>218678177>>218680244a couple of examples from my google search
>4K players are still $300>Consoles are still $500How do I watch 4K kino for cheap?
>>218680342i have this same issue. i've been meaning to buy a PS5 just for 4k blurays but the version with a disc is never cheap enough to be worth it.
>>218680342just pirate it like everyone else?
Fuck your black bars you out of touch boomer faggotsWelcome to 2026
>>218680244any other shows like this?
Does 4k blu-rays existing stop you from watching DVDs? Why do you not want them to exist?
>>218681280Well I don't really care if people watch TV shows in 4k. I'd just prefer it if they rereleased the DVD version on a blu-ray disc instead so you could have like twenty 480p episodes on one disc.
>>218680123Three boobs like Total Recall chick
>>218677584yeah dont get your hopes too high for a 4k remaster of a TV show simply because the original quality tends to be too low. Im sure there are some TV shows that are on blu ray that the original reels have good enough quality for a 4k transfer. but most the time its not.I personally would like to see a legit 4k remaster and color correction of Dragonball and Dragon Ball Z. there have been fan made AI 4k remasters, but end of the day its not on a nice box set with a nice menu screen and some guy just remastered it, not an official studio, which you would hope be done by professionals.
>>218681280what you have to understand is that DVD's only can hold 5g of data. while a blu ray can hold 25g. so when DVD's were first produced, movies were actually reduced in quality to fit on DVD's. this could also include the colors and sounds being used, since some films have more colors and more sound effects which equals more data to store on a DVD. so the real reason why you should want to phase out DVD's is because the original quality of most film and some tv shows is higher than what is put on the Discs.
Modern shows on UHD I get since they don't require any remastering (and some do look insane - TLOU I thought particularly) but older shows (and especially fucking sitcoms)seems like a waste of resources to release on the format outside of a handful of exceptions. UHD is a already an expensive format to author and press for when it comes to films that typically run 2-3hrs max, now imagine doing maybe thirty/forty times that for a couple of seasons of a show. It's no wonder they have to charge and arm and a leg for sets like Seinfeld and Friends (and even then manage to fuck them up).Sometimes a BD sourced from a 4K master is more than good enough.
>>218681268in buffy the vampire slayer there are some scenes where you can see lighting rigs and crew members in the HD remasterthere's also the inverse where they crop a 4:3 show to fit on 16:9 screens like pic related, and it ruins the joke
>>218681268>>218685794The Wire was similarly matted from 16:9 for 4:3 broadcast, but for the HD remasters they went back and opened it up. It was never intended to be seen that way though (the DPs and David Simon themselves consider the HD versions to be alternate interpretations and not definitive), so you end up with a lot of empty space and weaker shot compositions that they still had to brush out boom mics and other equipement/visual inconsistencies from.I don't think you can even stream the original 4:3 SD versions now since HBO has chosen the HD version as the go-to, but the DVDs are cheap as chips and very easy to come by (plus have great commentaries to boot)
>>218677756Isn’t it upscaled to 4K on HBO Max? A shitty AI touch up is the best we’re going to get. No way HBO is scanning all the negatives again.
>>218686352There was an image online of someone accessing the original negatives from a few years ago, a lot of people thought that was indication for 4k down the line. I mean of all HBO shows, it's easily the one that they'd instantly recoup costs on, so I wouldn't put it past them
