gotta say i was a bit skeptic at first looking at the director's previous work, but it was actually pretty good
some good acting, great looking sets with good lighting, a reveal that was slow but not weak, probably would've been better if one or more of them died though and not just the entourage
had some grievances with it thoughever like how could he have survived what, to me, looked like a 200 feet fall? and that monitor room that only existed so that the girl could warn the others of the threat when there's no feasible explanation as to why it even is there
but that wasn't enough to make it like miserable or something
rating it a 3/5, entertaining but only worth seeing once

Back from the cinema
>spoiler free thoughts

For better or worse, it's a lot like the first movie. Generally entertaining but not as good as it ought to be, given the premise. The Most Dangerous Game with an occult theme-- should be easy to pull off, but the writing and direction are too weak to make full use of it. But again, it's still entertaining. Most people think the ending of the first movie is the best part, and in that regard this one is better than the first. It also gets into the action straight away, which is nice.

The cast does a good job (I was surprised to see David Cronenberg and Sarah Michelle Gellar-- also not to hate on the guy who played Titus, but I kept thinking how much better it would be if it was Andrew Divoff in the role, then I looked him up and saw that he was 70 years old now), with Grace's sister being a good addition, but-- and I said this about the Scream movies recently, I hate this generic family drama shit that seems to pervade the genre lately. It doesn't give the characters depth and make me more endeared to them, it's just unnecessary filler that's too awkwardly serious in a movie that's designed to be a campy comedy action horror. It's not even original, it's the same exact sister drama they did in Scream 5. There's got to be a better way to move the plot.
I also think the dialogue is terrible in this, as well as a lot of modern movies, especially in horror. Two guys worked on the script and "fuck you" is about as clever a line as either can come up with.

Yes, I've been drinking, and I'm going to stop typing here because I could very easily go on a rant about the Chinese (their effect on American films, the acting and in this case the casting as well), and it's just not worth it. All I'm saying is when you watch this, and you think "why did they say the line that way? Why are they being so overexpressive here? Why does the tone have to be all over the place with comedy, drama, horror, etc" it's the fucking Chinese

Interesting. I've never thought about it but now I'll be wondering how much writers think about the complexity of what they write.
As a sidenote, having watched some foreign films with blistering fast lines, it does sometimes make it hard to watch when you're reading subtitles that make up half the screen. I always laugh though when English speaking characters show up in Japanese films and they say really simplistic lines.

I felt like the violence lacked impact. Not in that it needed to be gorier but in that it never felt like the characters actually got hurt. Plus I think it was shot a bit too cleanly. Like a popcorn action flick instead of a horror movie.

Every violent encounter in the movie could have been executed much better. The suspension of disbelief needed is very high every time a 190 pound man attacks these tiny unarmed girls and doesn't just choke them out or snap their necks within seconds. They always square up like it's a boxing match and get stunned by some blow that never should have landed. Of course any character using a gun has Stormtrooper aim as well.

The pepper spray gag made for a pretty funny scene though

Just finished. This was on my watchlist for decades, I caught a little bit of it on cable back in the 90s, though now I think it might have been the sequel. This was TAME, it's absurd that it has an R rating. I don't think it even has a curse word in it. Made for CBS, apparently. So so 90s. Has the boy from Poltergeist. I was thinking of how high school jock bullies are accepted now as a modern myth, but I think the 50s greaser type like in this were real. R. Crumb comics seem to vouch for them being like this (Skutch), so I think guys writing in the 70s/80s were just putting them in modern dress by making them football jocks. Whatever, this is a silly movie and the story it's based on is just King working out some of elements he'd use in It.

Essentially. But I wouldn't really consider the original Faces of Death to be something terribly high art either, it's more of a novelty exploitation film that mixed footage of real deaths with very obviously staged ones to show how death is part of life. This is just an interesting if very bizarre attempt to create something from nothing. I'm not that terribly hyped for it, but I'm definitely going to check it out when it comes to Shudder.
Also, they got a new trailer out too.

the entire sequence with the chimp attack face transplant and the skin grafts in tubes was unironically more unnevering than most horror
Also it's nice it also shows the male side of it, which is what the original short by The Substance director was all about (Reality+)

I'm actually thankful for The Substance for bringing body horror back
And it's quite something that the director managed to go as high as the fucking Oscar finals with a body horror movie that doesn't shy away from cheesy ass gonzo shit like the entire ending sequence or the fight between Elisa and Sue, even if critics high on their farts would love to pretend it's just some deep critique about female beauty standards or whatever.
Unlike Sinners, The Substance actually feels like a body horror movie for people that like body horror instead of a horror movie for people that don't like horror movies

2nd has more deaths, more fun fly monster effects, and less character drama so I prefer it over the first, simple as.
If you'd rather a more serious, well scripted and better acted movie you'd go with the first, but I prefer horror to focus on other things.

>only came to fame with rentals
That's a phenomena that will sadly be lost with streaming. At least that's my fear. So many good movies that had a low to mid budged and were made for the direct to video market. Many become cult classics. And now we end up with a bunch of throw away consooomable streaming slop that is forgotten the next day. undistinguishable from the next movie. Only made with a checklist in mind and an accountant that's breathing down the directors neck. No heart, no passion.

As far as free legal streaming goes, it's really hard to beat Tubi & PlutoTV for overall content and variety. Tubi has all the microbudget movies you could ever want. PlutoTV has a lot of the bigger name franchises & movies.

>>
>>218941349
By the time the 2000s and the internet exploded, horror movie recs moved more toward genre-specific sites/forums and piracy. It's how I found out about Saw, August Underground, Guinea Pig, Audition, etc.

/hor/ is the closest thing to those old forum days of people just posting lists back and forth and telling stories about the craziest shit they saw or heard that someone saw.
>>
>>218941565
What do you mean you don't have Tubi? It's a free streaming site. You can even pass the movie link directly to ytdlp, and it'll download it for you. I just pirate stuff, but I know some comes from Tubi because of their specific combo of resolution and A/V codecs. I downloaded 3 yesterday that I'm sure are from Tubi, but haven't watched them yet.

>>218941565

>>
>>218941700
I don't want to say that everything new is bad. Well, maybe I was saying that. I know that there are still great movies that are made today. But there are some changes that make me miss some of the old days.
I am a collector of physical media. I like to stand in front of a wall of movies, rund my fingers across them until I find the one that makes me want to watch it. It just feels different than just scrolling through some online database. And if I find a fun new movie and I want to add it to my collection it turns out that it's some Netflix exclusive that will never get a physical release. It kind of is a bummer.
Sorry, just ranting.
