I saw something about a year ago which made me think that the world was healing.

In the on screen tv listings for broadcast TV in the midwest, the TOS episode "The Way to Eden" (S03E20) wasn't listed as:
> The enterprise captures escaping humans

But:
> Space hippies arrive on the enterprise...

Since this is /tv/, the worst was the "Billy Jack" series. When you're young, you love the movies because he's out there kicking everyone's ass with his kung fu; but when you go back to watch it as an adult, you realize how insane everything they're saying and promoting is.

This was at the height of the 'secret native magic' phase (where natives had lost secret knowledge to be disease free, etc, until the white man came and killed them.

I've got this scene cued up to where they describe how they're running their school:

ISS wouldn't make sense. Mirror universe gets shidded on after TOS era by aliens. As far as I'm aware, the only thing we know about it is it's human-first, and the World Razer was a ship that existed there. It may as well be a blank canvas.
>>
>>219120735

I don't think they should be experimenting at this point. They should go back to a normal Episodic Star Trek Show with exploration, completely new crew without relying on cameos, colored uniforms, and Cozy Ship Interiors.

I think it was a lot of things:

>The Beatles (and others) promoting eastern religions created a situation where anti-christianity became a form of teenage rebellion
> The 1970 release of the film "Little Big Man" enshrined the myth of the "noble red man"; which, of course, included the kind of 'secret knowledge' that the easter religions were also promoting

I forget which Billy Jack movie it was, but in one of them they claimed that the Native Americans had learned how to cure cancer with herbs
>>
In the novelization for Star Trek TMP it is mentioned that Starfleet personnel are different from the majority of Federation citizens and tend to be less “enlightened” they are more individualistic and their temperament is better suited for the discipline of working on a starship. Most people don’t curse anymore. Also Kirk apparently has a chip in his brain that acts like a computer. And TOS is a program recreating the five year mission based off of Kirks captains logs. Also Kirks middle name was taken from his mothers "love instructor."

performative reactionary talk: "Heck, I wish Trek was heckin racgist."

"Heck. I just want explosions. -burps-"

None of you really believe that. It's just going all the way to the other side of the spectrum out of performative reactions.

It's more nuanced than left vs right. Both sides have woke and both sides are annoying when brow beating. The Right has the puritan extreme and the Left has the Gay flags everywhere cancel culture extreme.
>>
The question is about 'Does this browbeat?'

and 'is this making the show ugly?'

I think a Space Conquest Abrahamic Inquisitor Ship Trek would be ugly.
Just as I think a blue haired crew of fat women trek would be ugly.

The episode where Riker has a relation with that woman from the genderless society could be considered a social issues episode.

You’d better believe if SFA were a success they’d push it further and further. The next captain would be a morbidly obese woman with a buzz cut. Their Data Holmes would be a furry who dressed in his fursona multiple times a season. And Paramount would be charging $20 a month for the privilege of watching.

That was also 35 years ago. I'm not interested in rolling the dice on another creative hoping they'll get it right this time and where if you lose you're stuck with another Kurtzman(-lite) for another decade. No thanks. It's best to keep those topics to a bare minimum going forward.
>>
>>219144947
there are tons of contemporary writers who can write sci fi stories that are well done social commentary/morality plays like Trek used to be. the answer isn't to stop doing that and continue making slop because they might do it in a way that triggers your fragile /pol/troon sensibilities. none of this shit is Star Trek anyway. you're literally advocating for them to just turn it into literally Star Wars style slop that says nothing about anything when in reality the answer is for you to FUCK OFF from the Star Trek general when you don't even fucking talk about it and all you do is cry about Alex fucking Kurtzman

Noone wants to turn Star Trek into Warhammer though. That's turning this into a caricature. But there really are people who want to turn Trek into blue haired space academia. >sanctioning Soren's brainwashing therapy
She spends the entire episode trying to escape it and Riker is clearly horrified afterward. Short of the entire cast turning to the camera and saying, in unison, "This sucks" it could not have been more clear the episode was condemning conversion therapy. I hate Pakleds so fucking much.
>>

Outside of going full 1950s pulp cartoon lobotomy, it’s hard to depict mental health treatment as detrimental — for anything, not just this specific example. Since you need the world to be believable.. and a believable world won’t have a treatment that generally makes you worse off than you were before.
They always do the same kind of thing when they’re trying to shit on electroshock therapy in various media, despite knowing nothing about it, they end up just making the character a little mellower and detached afterwards: whether or not they would prefer that to the psychological torture they felt before the treatment is for anybody to say. There’s no good way to show it on screen without the character just going “oh I feel worse”
