Return of the Living Dead is possibly the best zombie movie of all time.
Easily in the top 5.

It's a unique movie.
Elements of horror and comedy. Great soundtrack and decent effects.
Not sure they planned it this way when it was shot but it's a wild ride. The sequels were not quite as good but worth a watch.

I'd argue that they aren't. ROTLD 2 is like 1 if it was made badly, while 3 is good if viewed as some standlone movie (as it was intended) but not as a ROTLD movie. 4 and 5 are utterly unwatchable.

Suspiria (2018)
Possession (1981) if you want it to spiral
Cat People (1982) for pure 80s erotic doom

Close in what sense? She's a serial killer in the movie and the only reference to witches is in the title of the film, which is purely metaphorical
>>
>>219263955
Killer plant appreciators have slim pickings too. I bought a collection of botanical horror stories and the introduction talks about how they were a popular subject in the Victorian era right up there with vampires, werewolves, and mummies but fell off as time went on.
>>
>>219264715
Have you ever been to Salem? It's hilarious how much they play up the witch thing. Probably a good setting for a movie taking place in modern Salem honestly
>>
>>219264724
It's close in that she was psychotic. She breaks from reality at several points with fantastical visions. It is grounded in an historical sense because this fits the description of lots of women who were suspected as witches in American and European history. These women were for the large part not malicious and most likely were victims of childhood abuse (much like present day psychotics) so having a crazy woman serial killer is a kind of rape revenge fantasy subversion of the historical trope of the witch. I do like some feminist movies and horrorslop when they're done well so this one did it for me.

I agree though, plants are actually quite creepy because you can film them as this primal grey area of sentience. They don't grow or kill because they're evil, but you naturally imagine sentience into them. Also this zombie like relentless growth, trapping you. "Ick" started out like that and then just went full zombie sentience.
The Ruins is a great one. The downside of other versions I've seen is terrible "fighting a branch" scene like that Tales from the Crypt film kek.

The sad thing is that they went in expecting to have a great time and were excited to work together again, then as production went on realized how much the movie sucked and how much the people making it didn't give a shit about it. I forget who told this but one of them mentioned later he called one of the other actors that turned down returning and said "Be glad you didn't come back, we're miserable here".

It's an interesting subject. I'll just quote part of the intro. It's called Evil Roots: Tales of the Botanical Gothic
>Unlike its contemporaries the vampire, werewolf, ghost or mummy, the killer plant has never received enough recognition as its own subgenre of gothic/horror. Despite this, the man-eating plant was a true literary phenomenon of the nineteenth century, inspiring esteemed gothic writers such as Nathaniel Hawthorne, Arthur Conan Doyle and H. G. Wells to write short stories.
>A major influence on the literature and arts featuring plant horror was that of Charles Darwin’s work on carnivorous plants. His two essays Insectivorous Plants (1875) and The Power of Movement in Plants (1877) became incredibly important to the rise of the man-eating plant as he revolutionised the ways in which plants were perceived. No longer seeing insectivorous plants as mere objects without agency, he observed their methods as purposeful and almost sentient as they appeared to use their environment to their advantage to catch their prey.
>This in turn inspired the idea of the blood-thirsty vegetable, the plant with murderous intent which moves and kills at will. The seemingly passive poisoners from previous stories now became dangerously active in the short stories of the mid- to late nineteenth century. No longer wallflowers, the plants were given starring roles controlling tentacle-like appendages, growing legs or even mouths as you will see in the stories included in this collection.
>This collection spans from 1844 to 1932 and a shift towards the more familiar plant horror such as Little Shop of Horrors can be seen as the plants move away from poisonous women in “Rappaccini’s Daughter” to tropes of early science fiction in the later texts that feature parasites and tentacles.

The Bandersnatch from Code Veronica is 100% based on this nigga from ROTLD III and I suspect the turning around zombie in RE1 was inspired by the yellow cadaver in the first movie. >Socratea exorrhiza is a palm native to tropical rainforests in Central and South America. The tree supposedly “walks” from shade to sunlight by growing roots in the direction it wants to travel, then allowing the old roots to lift into the air and die. Some say the process takes a couple of years, while one paleobiologist suggests the tree moves two or three centimeters per day.

>The story of the walking palm has been shared by rainforest guides for years. It was first suggested in science by John H. Bodley in 1980. In a journal of The Association for Tropical Biology and Conservation, Dr. Bodley reported that the palm uses its roots to “walk away” from its germination point if another tree falls on the seedling and knocks it over. This way, the tree can move away from obstacles that are major hazards for immature palms.

>More recently, Peter Vrsansky, a paleobiologist from the Earth Science Institute of the Slovak Academy of Sciences Bratislava, claims to have seen this phenomenon first-hand. However, other scientists insist the walking palm is a myth. Biologist Gerardo Avalos published a detailed study on Socratea exorrhiza where he observed that the tree does not walk because its roots don’t move.

>Unlike other trees that have roots fully hidden underground, the walking palm has a higher root system that grows outwards from the base of the tree, several feet off the ground. Over time, as soil erodes, some of these roots die off, and new roots form.

Well, when I was down there and I saw some the guide I had told me he had witnessed them move over time as he had been living there for several years. Saw a lot of cool shit down there like gigantic wasp nets, big swarms of large ants, and flocks of wild parrots.

>but then I saw Hellraiser at some point in my 30s, and realized that I must have snuck in at some point when my deaf uncle (who would have been a teenager at the time) was watching it, and my brain erased that memory.
I was the RotLD anon in the last thread and I actually had a similar experience.
I watched the RotLD movies on a whim recently and halfway into the third one I realized I knew the scenes by heart. I suddenly remembered seeing the movie when I was like 8 years old, but had completely forgotten about it, even though imagery like the woman with shards of metal and glass sticking out of her and the guy with his spine pulled up out of his body stuck with me over the years and popped into my head from time to time.

I am 99% certain that the film is where I got most of my kinks, because the neuron activation during the scenes where she's groaning while shoving wire under her skin was intense. I saw it and suddenly realized that "my type" all my life has probably been modeled off of her. An edgy masochist. Even the way she breaks down and gets pathetic plays into it, because I love the "tough on the outside, wimp on the inside" vibe.

Because of that, I keep thinking about the movie.
And because I keep thinking about the movie, I decided to post about it.

This one is somewhat legendary. In people who fuck up trying to get rid of the barbs, they end up with the pain for years. I've also heard some natives who came into contact with it went insane from the constant unending pain and jumped off cliffs because they couldn't stand it any longer.

The modern fix is to use a strong adhesive tape or wax to strip it from your skin. But still, if you have no idea what it is, you'd be in for a hell of a ride.

To each their own. Some of the names are ridiculous but that's how a lot of native names are in places.

Another neat place is Black Mountain (also called Kalkajaka, which is the same term but in native). Countless amounts of people have disappeared and not a trace of any of them has ever been found. The theory is they slip through cracks in the mountain and end up stuck in the various caves and tunnels that run under the mountain.

Yeah I'd do pretty much the same. I'd bring a very basic first aid and change of clothes, but that's not enough. You really need to bring a when wandering off innawoods, and ideally multiple types of weapons like a good knife and some pepper spray. And of course let someone know your route and how long you'll be gone.

I ran into a black bear and two cubs just off the trail I was walking. I had just passed the John Oliver cabin and was leaving the mountain, which is probably the most heavily trafficked part of that entire park because it's considered so historic it attracts lots of tourists. So those bears were probably well acclimated to the presence of people. After checking them out I just rushed right past them which in retrospect was incredibly stupid.

The human animal is also a real hazard in wilderness and parks. Criminals, addicts, vagrants, and assorted psychos like to lurk out there and scope for easy pickings.

>stalker, picnic at hanging rock, even the blair witch project
Based mystery enjoyer.

The disappearances can be really fascinating. Sometimes I think about what would happen if a few people set out with GPS locators into these places just to see what happens, especially with somewhere like Black Mountain. There's also another park here (don't recall the name) where you absolutely have to stick to the trails or you will likely disappear, as that is also theorized to have a lot of gaps where you fall into underground tunnels. The amount of caves and tunnels in Australia is quite astonishing and nobody knows what might be in them, even entire early settles have disappeared in one of these odd parks, complete with the horses, the wagons and all the livestock.

>The human animal is also a real hazard in wilderness and parks. Criminals, addicts, vagrants, and assorted psychos like to lurk out there and scope for easy pickings.
For sure, but it can depend. You won't really find addicts and crackheads out in the more remote forests and parks here, it's just too far away for them to be out there. Creeps and psychos are another story though, you sometimes hear about how someone on a trail was creepy and that gets reported to the forest rangers. Some of the national parks are taken really seriously here so you won't find trash and the rangers will also be very active in the evening and night (some national parks also close at night and they'll patrol).

Tasmania (if I remember right) has a colony of a these kind of ugly scrubby trees found nowhere else on earth. It's a few hundred plants over a kilometer or so. They're sterile mutants and they're all genetically identical clones. A branch falls to the ground, it sprouts roots and grows into a new clone. Individually, they live a few hundred years but the original plant grew there sometime between 50,000-150,000 years ago and it's just been cloning itself ever since. It's not dangerous or anything but it's cool as hell that this one shitty plant that couldn't get laid has just been xeroxing itself for eons.
>>
>>219269495
It's pretty much the same here when it comes to the safety of national parks, but we've got two long trails which pretty much span the length of the united states from north to south, and they can be sparsely maintained, with the only structures being unstaffed, unsupplied, unmaintained cabins. Those are kind of asking for trouble imo and there have been multiple accounts of people being stalked or murdered on those long trails.

And yeah I am lucky I did not get mauled that day. I was kind of in awe at seeing them so I had to gawk for a little bit. It's not like they were extremely close, but they were moving toward the trail. It got to a point where I just thought I'd better gtfo so I got moving.

I also tried to take my review and turn it into a song but some sections didn't get past Suno's censorship when converting it into lyrics....

see this is so fascinating, just because plant life becomes so mysterious it's closer to what we think of an alien.
sea anemone are similar, they can reproduce, but more commonly they split into genetic twins if you feed them enough. and they're also very alien looking and primitive. coral too can form massive long lived colonies.

Wollemi Pine, it was found in NSW. You can plant them just about anywhere now though but the seeds/saplings cost a small fortune.

I wonder if in theory they will eventually genetically mutate, as it is now being spread beyond the small area it had occupied all this time and being more widespread increases chances for natural variation.

Captain Kronos was a good rec, another classic Hammer film.
His name is a bit on the nose though. I loved the tavern bully villain, honestly that guy was a master tier asshole.

>King's short story about Jordy Verill that got adapted for Creepshow is actually pretty freaky. You get a lot more of Jordy's internal thoughts and agony as he gets taken over and turned into a plant monster.

It's funny because The Lonesome Death of Jordy Verill is a parody of Lovecraft's The Color Out of Space where as in that story a meteor crashes whose effects spread slowly and bring everything to decay while in King's story it's the opposite with the planets spreading uncontrollably with King himself delivering what is probably the greatest line of dialogue ever uttered in a motion picture if not all of human history.... https://youtu.be/1UBhUSnZKwo?si=TKJPL_GdpdG6xmaF

Day of the Triffids is deadly serious, but it's more like a prototype for zombie apocalypse stories where the killer plants are a secondary threat to the humans turning on each other.
>>

nta but haven't seen this one, thanks for the mention
>>
>>219271681
B-movie refers to the budget more than anything.
Most plant horror is sci-fi, incidentally. Invasion of the Body Snatchers and The Thing From Another World are some of the best examples. Queen of Blood is also underappreciated

I saw the poster with the black in it and I thought it was fake. What a gross looking african american with that white background. Repulsive. And the setting of the movie; stuck in the backrooms but an african is there? Makes the movie seem nasty. The african is so out of place.
>>
>>219273202
it's existential horror because there's nothing for him to steal in there

Lol. That’s funny.
But it was just so out of place and immediately made me lose interest. Like the african just looks so gross on the posted. Like the setting and colors and there is an african. It is such a stain.
