You see it in theaters? It's not for me, but Undertone is. I should go see that.
>>
>>219528155
yeah it's worth for some tcm worship
>>
>>219528210
Yeah, they had screenings a day early at Regal. If you go to the Screen Unseen nights at AMC, last Monday was FOD. The movie is surprisingly non gory. The death reinactments have that creepy vibe like the films in Sinister, they did a good job. Undertone is a snoozefest.
>>
Why do people revere 70s/80s horror so much? The acting is nearly always shit. The effects completely claymation tier. Most of them are just shit.
>>
>>219528429
It's when horror was first stretching its legs and seeing what it could get away with. Many of the movies have this grimy, perverse feeling to them that audiences love. 80s stuff was when Hollywood was pouring money into horror, so you got a lot of glossy stuff for teens.
>>
>>219528160
Idk everything you described sounds like they took an IP for a well known "disturbing film" and made it far less extreme to appeal to modern girls. I'm still interested in seeing it, I guess.
>>
>>219528560
None of that makes them good movies, anon.
>>
>>219528429
There's a lot of shit but also a lot of really amazing movies released during that time too. Same as any genre in any decade really.
>>
>>219528429
70s had great atmosphere and a distinct aesthetic from the film stock of the era, as well as the sets and costumes. 80s had great special effects and a very energetic, fun way of shooting scenes.
>The acting is nearly always shit. The effects completely claymation tier.
Compared to what? Today's bland nevernude zoomer actresses and CGI from India? What great effects does any modern movie have?

>The Writer's Barely Disguised Fetish
>>
>>219529146
Not sure I'd say it's worse all things considered since we have slop like found footage to enjoy. But mainstream horror has taken a nosedive.
>nostalgia bullshit
The problem with this argument is horror movies are comfy to me all the way back to the 20s.
CGI to me is a main culprit, horror is a physical genre and CGI is the antithesis of that, none of it feels real or dangerous, and rarely do we see it stylized. That affects both the very big budget and very low budget films.
That combined with many NO FUN protocols like removing nudity, bashing you over the head with woke shit so you don't think any Bad ThoughtsTM, everything having to be some daring analogy for trauma.

Rewatched 28 days later and had a thought cross my mind. I wonder if there were any survivors hiding in the city that could hear or see jim when he was calling out in the streets but understandably were too scared to try and save him or thought it was pointless because doing that shit was basically a death sentence so they just left him be. Same thing when him and everyone left in the car. I wonder if anyone up in the buildings saw them driving away and wished they could come with them but of course it was too late.

I would say it makes sense that zoomers wouldn't see the value in nostalgia, because they haven't experienced it for themselves... but I have met many zoomers who really love 80's culture and movies, so idk what this anon is on about.

Just finished. Don't know what I expected this to be, but what it IS is traumaslop about post partum depression. 5% of the movie is horrory stuff, the other 95 is pregnancy anxiety. Seems to go for the idea that her depression is a literal demon that calls for an exorcism.

>>
>>219537241
I don't see why they can't reasonably combine the two. They both look like shit on their own.

I agree with the other anon, though. Most of the effects in old movies do not look good and it's bizarre watching reviewers praise it as though it's believable. I get they hate remakes, but a lot of the time they go too far in sucking off the original.
>>
>>219537352
Using only CGI saves A LOT of time and money. There's zero need to build anything and if a take goes bad, it takes a lot of time to reset and shoot it again. It's also why all big budget shit is now filmed in a green screen box. They save a lot on location taxes and aren't constrained by time & outdoor conditions. Yes, it does suck and takes some art out of filmmaking.
>>
>>219537349
True

Just finished. This had a charm to it, a cozy tv anthology show vibe that felt like an overlong Masters of Horror episode. I was digging that it seemed to have its own little mythology, but then at the end it said "based on the video game" so I guess that all comes from the games. This is silly and dumb and I don't recommend it to anybody, but if you liked Fear Itself or some such you might enjoy this. Oh yeah, it's about working the night shift and as a third shifter myself, I'm a sucker for that atmosphere.

I enjoyed it, agree about the cozy anthology feel. Actually feel the same way about the Silent Hill films - they're trying to cram so much game lore into it, the films end up feeling surreal and unexplained. Some adventurous direction in both backed that up.
>>
On the topic of remakes, are there any /hor/ recommends? I tend to enjoy them for the most part. Not saying they're better or worse, but I don't have the issue with horror remakes others do. It's the one genre where so much content is put out that I don't think it affects the market.

I think the 80s run of The Thing, The Fly, Invaders From Mars, and The Blob are considered borderline flawless.
Personally I'm partial to Quarantine over Rec and I also liked the Eggers Nosferatu.

Anya early career:
>The VVitch
>Split
>Thoroughbreds
Soapy (still in her) early career:
>Heretic
>Companion
>Her Private Hell about to release
>Peaches coming later this year
She's following a similar path at the moment. The big difference is that Soapy got her big break on a tv show, and Anya's tv appearances were glorified cameos with her big break coming in early horror films and then a netflix show when she was more established.
But considering that Anya quickly moved onto big budget ip-shit with Playmobil and The New Mutants, that shows a similar outlook to Soapie who was all too happy to appear in starshit
