The actors (at least the half of them that are good rather than dogshit) do a fair job no matter what they're given and the "real time" gimmick is what it is, but the thing that makes it all fall apart is that the writing isn't tailored to the format. This becomes INCREDIBLY apparent whenever a scene moves away from the skilled half of the cast that can hard carry any garbage lines they're fed and instead shifts to dogshit actors like the Princess actress, Javadi, Garcia, or guest actors like the chick who played the sister of the schizo black law school guy etc.Also, another major problem is the pacing. On a micro level the issue is that the writers just can't do anything with the real time gimmick that makes it worthwhile (especially with their horseshit unrealistic dialogue killing any possibility of the show actually feeling realistic or documentarian). But on a macro level the writers just have really poor judgment. It's insane that the shooting happened in the first season and the biggest plotline that showcases the idiocy of that decision is Langdon's. The shooting and Langdon getting caught is something that should've happened in season 3 or 4. He should've suffered an injury in season 1 that got him to take benzos, then while Mel builds trust in him, he should've slowly started taking more and more drugs. It might've even been better if it was Mel who ended up reporting him because she got really autistic about the medication logs instead of Santos (who at this point just comes across as a retarded know-it-all bitch, especially since they added that weird as fuck "hey guys just so everyone watching knows, it's tooootally cool as FRICK to be a casual sex having lesbian, as long as you have ramen in bed teehee ;P" flipbait subplot with her and garcia, just like how every other scene is just validation bait for different terminally online categories of fags).(1/2)

Instead you get this bullshit speedrun storytelling which the actors have to desperately scramble to try and save. Santos is saying she's angry everyone's treating Langdon like the golden boy when he's been treated like shit, because the writers don't know what they're actually showing. That stands out to me, even though I hated Langdon for much of season 1, until he started developing the mentor dynamic with Mel and started learning from her how to best deal with patients like her. Meanwhile she accuses a guy of beating and raping his daughter because she's LE BATMAN PROTECTOR OF HECKING GIRLIRINOS FROM EVIL MANCHUDS but it's okay she doesn't need to be disciplined because Dana saved the day at the last second. Characters change tracks like crazy instead of having their development feel like it's progressing in a natural, dramatically compelling way to such a wild degree that they just feel like schizos. It's completely schizophrenic writing that's saved by the actors, or at least the half of them that aren't trash.(2/2)
