Are there any TOS experts that could answer a question for me? I just watched That Which Survives. When the ship is locked into high warp drive and is 15 minutes from exploding, Scott crawls into an access tube to try to make fixes to keep the ship from blowing up. This makes sense to me. But, then Spock has Lt. Rahda prepare to jettison the pod along Scott on his order. Why? If jettisoning the pod will save the ship, then why not do it before the 15 minues are up and give Scottie a few seconds to get clear before hitting the jettison button? If it won't save the ship, then why bother with the jettison at all?
>>
>>219704496
maybe they wanted to kill scotty

Do you think those actors expected Shatner to do that? They look genuinely taken aback

The Dominion would've just ganked the Enterprise if it did show up. They wrote the whole USS Odyssey storyline specifically to show that this would happen. A single Galaxy class ship would make no difference to the war.

Just ordered the first season of 80s Twilight Zone on DVD, partially because of the high concentration of Trek actors.

Worth remembering that when a Sovereign turned up in Picard S2 many people assumed it was the Enterprise even though it was just an incidental ship in a fleet of ships, it wasn't even big on the screen. Berman's autism was proven right.

>Voyager should have just enhanced their warp drive like their demon planet duplicates did, it wouldn't have destabilized real people.
That's what made it such a kino 'sode.

>the demon crew is constantly patting themselves on the back for coming up with such an amazing redesign for the warp drive
>they're puffed up with the idea that they're going to be famous for creating it when they get back to Earth
>realize they're all mimic goo
>broadcast an SOS to the real VOYboys
>demon ship goes splat just before Voyager arrives
>Voyager: "Huh... weird. Well, let's turn around and keep heading for Earth."
The audience is left with the realization that the Voyager crew was almost given a technology that would have gotten them back to Earth in record time if not for the missed connection.
>>
>>219715140
He's great at portraying Barclay going from absolutely at ease on the holodeck to constantly dropping spaghetti irl without making it obnoxious. It's nice to see him go outside of his comfort zone to help Voyager too, risking not just embarrassment but punishment as well in order to do that right thing. As soon as it works he's rightly praised for it, too. I liked seeing that.

Because while it would save the ship, it would leave them stranded in deep space with no way to warp out, which is a very bad thing obviously. It's just less bad and has a higher chance of eventual rescue and survival than flat out exploding. By Spock's logic, there are 3 outcomes, ranked in order of desirability:

>Scotty fixes the warp drive, the ship is saved, and everyone lives.
>Scotty and the pod are jettisoned, Scotty dies, the ship is left adrift but intact.
>The ship explodes and everyone dies.

The prime directive is fucking retarded and there is no virtue to allowing lesser developed civilizations to suffer through disease, war and death when you can elevate them past those growing pains immediately. If anything, the Federation has a moral obligation to do the exact opposite of it.
>>
>>219733490
The opposite of the prime directive is colonialism.
>>
>>219733490
The prime directive can be both good and bad. Your example is when it's bad. Plenty of other examples where Starfleet ruined a civilization because they stuck their nose in their business.

Both effectively the same thing, as they would erase the culture of the less advanced races. no different from what the borg do, really.

Just hack the Borg to turn them into terraformers and hop on a ship and get shit done.
>>
>>219733805
It would drastically alter it, for sure, but the skipping of untold years of suffering and struggle is worth the changing of any culture. Imagine early human tribes bashing each other's heads in with rocks because they think the other tribe poisoned their well, because they have no conception of disease. Elevating them would surely change whatever culture they possessed, but that's a small price to pay.
>no different from what the borg do
The borg mentally and physically enslave people and completely remove their own minds and personality. For all intents and purpose, they murder them. It's completely different.
>>
>>219734052
pre-warp civilizations would be absorbed by the borg fairly easy when the federation had trouble with them at first. it's foolish move considering the borg is real.

When DS9 is being evacuated in 3 part season 2 opener Sisko gives Jake a letter that he tells him to wait on opening, pretty clear it's for in case he's killed.

Hit best of both worlds on my latest rewatch and I have the same thought I've always had with this episode: it's great but not really an all-timer. The second part is noticeably weaker too but even the first part just doesn't land the way it presumably did for audiences when it was airing. I usually don't care about outdated visuals but for the borg it's always been a bit too goofy and the idea of an assimilating hivemind is no longer a novel concept at all so the thematic elements of loss of self and culture don't feel as punchy, especially after having watched voy.
