Rebecca Sugar might be a lib, but comparing to others she's not nearly as insufferable + she does have creative ideas and I like the aesthetics of small coastal town. It went into complete and utter garbage when they shifted from the normal "monster of the week" storytelling to gay story arcs and 90% of the show became usual millennial goyslop where characters just walk around silently and depressively stare at each other because that's deep. I'm binging the show right now actuallyThere hasn't been a show as appealing since Steven Universe - watching a boy be raised by his 3 hot warrior priestess/ shrine maiden sister/moms who are thousands of years old and survivors of a 5000 year old war and guardians of a planet. I even enjoyed the lesbian interpersonal drama, that shit was so hot. All their messy personal baggage and trauma. Season 1 was hella comfy too with just being a simple magic adventure series. I think the showrunners did a good job progressing the story. Some of the towny episodes can be buried and turn to lost media for all I care.It spawned a lot of bad knockoffs (like Elio and Turning Red) and these people don't have a clue what is actually appealing about SU. They somehow watched a whole show about magic and adventure and thought they wanted to see gay kids have interpersonal problems. nah.The gems being so interesting is what kept the show alive. Otherwise the show that slow drip feed of reveals for 10 years would be unwatchable, it was worth it to know Pearl's Past and who Pink Diamond was.Hell, I'd still watch a sequel starring the gems, new gems and old. Steven is a pretty good representation of what it's like to be the odd little lovable goofball who's blissfully unaware of the struggles all the older folks are going through. But this led to everyone around him mollycoddling him, which ultimately led to him being unprepared to handle his own struggles as he grew older.

this show had so many cool ideas it's insane. I was obsessed so much with it I couldn't really see how much potential it wasted, and this isn't about the gay stuff or Steven being sensitive and flamboyant. Had they improved that atrocious artstyle, animation and proportions (gem designs got worse with every season), gave the story a better structure, not change the characters and original humor halfway through and dared a lot more overall, with the gay stuff too (without it resulting faggy or preachy) it would've been almost universally loved. Gems and fusions were a fantastic idea, and so were Homeworld and Steven's multiple powers, making it so kiddy and goody two shoes, focusing on Steven's human side mostly was the biggest mistake. They should've continued with the kind of vibe the last episodes of season 1 were setting, those were the best.Exactly same could be said about future: great ideas, bad execution, maybe 4 episodes short too.
