I always find it humorous that Worf says something to the effect of “great men do not choose power, they have it thrust upon them” when convincing Martok to become the emperor, not 30 seconds after Worf having the title of emperor thrust upon him and saying he doesn’t want it.

Ferengi. Write a holonovel against this race that poisons everything by sticking their lobes into everything without ever mixing with any other species. Demand its expulsion from Federation space with the exception of those individuals married to Federation citizens. Abolish sacred marketplaces and not admit them to any employment. Finally, pursue the abolition of the rules of acquisition. It's not without cause that the Lytasians and Hupyrians called them genocide. The Ferengi is the enemy of humanoid kind. They must be sent back to Ferenginar or be exterminated. By phaser or by photon torpedo or by expulsion the Ferengi must disappear.

Rom has nothing to do with what Zek did.
Sisko had nothing to do with the changes Zek made on Ferenginar.
Quark did everything he could to get Zek and Moogie to break up so she would stop having influence over him but Zek was too senile and Moogie pussy was too good for that to happen.
Brunt didn't really give a fuck about Zek's changes and was at best neutral about them when he was explaining them to Quark while kissing his toes when the thought Quark was gonna be the next Nagus while Quark was horrified at what he was hearing so no, he wouldn't have saved them.

you said it "broke" him. that would never happen. Quark is like Worf where he has a huge complex about being a "REAL" Ferengi because he feels like he is a shitty failure of one. he would never compromise on HIS values just because he sees Rom doing things he would never do. Rom doing anything isn't going to BREAK Quark. Quark has pragmatism and at the end of the day that decision was what was best for profits so there's no contradiction.

>Au contraire. He's the person you wanted to be, one who was less arrogant and undisciplined in his youth. One who was less like me. The Jean-Luc Picard you wanted to be, the one who did not fight the Nausicaan, had quite a different career from the one you remember. That Picard never had a brush with death, never came face to face with his own mortality, never realized how fragile life is or how important each moment must be. So his life never came into focus. He drifted through much of his career, with no plan or agenda, going from one assignment to the next, never seizing the opportunities that presented themselves. He never led the away team on Milika III to save the ambassador, or take charge of the Stargazer's bridge when its captain was killed. And no one ever offered him a command. He learned to play it safe. And he never, ever got noticed by anyone.

Literally me dog, zero guramba

to make the ferengi a threat writing must be more than a general anticapitalist sentiment. they must be competent, their capitalist society about as utopian as that of the federation, their morality logical and capable of withstanding scrutiny.
Star Trek crumbled under too many inconsistencies. the Federation is somehow post-scarcity utopian but still an almost military organization controlled by a giant, grey and faceless administration, we only see true individualism, infinite diversity in infinite combinations, in the ships command staff, everyone else works mostly as today.
pretty much why i like starfleet academy so far, they deal with the "how" for the first time in trek history, not the what or why. exploring how societies become utopian, that's the next step to me.

Thank you fucking JewJew Abrahams you fucking hack.
The effect of jumping to warp in Star Trek was always represented by either the ship entering a rainbow disco tunnel (TOS movies) or the ship stretching (TNG era). Now they just "pop", like Star Wars.
Subspace itself was represented by streaking stars. Now it's a swirly blue tunnel... also like Star Wars.
Pisses me the fuck off. Let Star Trek have its own god damned visual identity you piece of shit.
>>
>>220348586

>>

Not disagreeing with you entirely, but to nitpick, rainbow disco warp speed is really just TMP, they tone all those colors down in the subsequent TOS movies

i watched the first episode of SA because it was free on youtube but it was terrible so I didn't watch anymore but the one thing I was remotely interested in is:

What was the fate of Caleb (is that his name?)'s mom? I imagined a scenario where she actually voluntarily joined Nux Braza or whatever his name is and abandoned her child for the cause and Caleb has to cope with that or whatever. It was like the one thing about the entire show I was intrigued by just because it was the mystery. I don't remember how many seasons this slop has but I'm only curious about that one plot point.

>1962: movie "H.M.S. Defiant"/"Damn the Defiant!" releases, featuring fictional frigate HMS Defiant
>1968: TOS "The Tholian Web" airs, featuring USS Defiant NCC 1764
>1994: DS9 "The Search pt. 1" airs, introducing USS Defiant NX-74205
>1999: DS9 "The Dogs of War" airs, introducing a freshly renamed USS Defiant NCC 75633
>2005: ENT "In A Mirror, Darkly" airs, revisiting the original TOS USS Defiant NCC 1764
So all instances of ships named "Defiant" are fictional and mainly constrained to Star Trek, although Star Trek probably got the name from that 1962 film. There's no historical basis for any "Defiant", however there has been a Royal Navy ship called "HMS Defiance".

All he does is neck-pinch people and any Vulcan can do that. Security is chump work for retards, Tuvok's real skill was logical deduction/investigation.
Neelix brought diplomacy to the Tuvix combination, Tuvok is a standoffish cold prick while Neelix can be amicable and make friends with damn near anybody. The amalgamation carries on that skill and Tuvok is improved as a result.

Investigation and interrogation -- there are a lot of things under the umbrella of security in Starfleet. Starfleet intelligence also operate as a sub-branch of security.

Anyway, you're just wrong. Tuvok's entire methodology and perspective is based around the tight control and mental discipline of being a Vulcan. Neelix completely disrupts what is the very firm foundation of a very successful life and career to introduce a host of trivialities.
>Tuvok is a prick
He's a Vulcan.
>but neelix introduces diplomacy which apparently standoffish Vulcan stoicism... is a bad fit for?
A lot of the Federation's most decorated and legendary ambassadors are Vulcans. Sarek was so stodgy he couldn't even maintain a consistent relationship with his son Spock and yet he is one of the most accomplished diplomats in Vulcan history.

I don't hate Neelix, but I've always been confused about what their goal with the character was. Were we supposed to find him adorable? Funny? Was he the audience self-insert as seen in some of the earlier episodes where he would comment on established Trek tropes like flying into anomalies and the Prime Directive?

I like how he looked in the pilot and think that junkyard vibe would've been a better direction to take the character than frycook. Having the cooking delegated to a single character meant they deprived themselves of having scenes like Riker scrambling eggs.
>>
>>220361203
He was an exposition prop for when the plot required Delta Quadrant exposition.
>>
>>220361203
He's just another "non-human outsider perspective" which Trek always loves to do. It started with Spock -- a character who can make commentary on humanity from a certain perspective. Spock and Data offered the dispassionate logical perspective, Seven of Nine the efficiency perspective, Quark the 'modern day human' perspective, Worf the aggressive alien perspective, and so on and so forth.

Neelix is the whimsical conman, kind of like a carnival barker type. He's not malicious like Quark and is genuinely a good person. It's a writing tool that lets you voice certain story elements through character archetypes, to better showcase and drive home your message.

Worf didn't want it because he is not the right person for the role. He barely knows what it means to be Klingon and everyone knows that. His allegiances will always be torn and his enemies will use that to attack him.

Gowron didn't want it because he just didn't want to be some cowardly old man hiding behind a desk, a title, tradition, or an army. He needed someone to tell him that there is more honor in doing what needs to be done than there is in doing what he wants. It's really not the same situation at all, it's only superficially similar.
