It was not that good for that long. They were literally doing space magic shit by like season 2.

The fact that they couldn't just have a tight, focused story about a politically- and culturally-homeless crew of strangers-turned-outlaws with a cool ship who have to survive in a solar system at war where everyone wants to kill them or fuck them over, it's so basic that it'd be trivial to write.
