I'm watching the Friendly Borg episode of Andromeda and it's like the funniest sci fi bottle episode I've ever seen. It does the little philosophical "I KNOW NOW.. WHAT IT MEANS TO BE ALIVE.. BUT I MUST DISASSEMBLE" thing, and it's like all the emotional beats except it's super perfunctory and the character was kind of annoying and the episode knew it so the crew are all just like ".....ok"
>I MUST GO, TO PROTECT YOU ALL
>...sure
>I WILL DISASSEMBLE, AND CEASE TO EXIST

It’s great from an acting standpoint but after watching it again I kept wondering why they never took a tricorder reading of the guy’s DNA to compare with Cardassian records. They could’ve easily hand waved it with Gul Dukat giving a line about upholding Cardassian privacy or some bullshit and keep the rest of the plot intact.
That quibble aside, it’s easily in my top 5 all time Trek episodes.

Good choice, but that's a lot of ship for such a small crew. I was just looking at Voyager prototype sketches, myself.

Added to the roster! Tasha wasn't erased from time though, she wound up on a Romulan rapeworld and died there. Unless I've forgotten something, her chronology is consistent.

True, it's a big ship.
The NX-01 Enterprise that cruised the Delphic expanse for over 100 years might be a good choice too.

I can't remember, did the ship end up looking any different after all that time or did the show just reuse the same shots for it? If it's visibly different that might be a good pick. I'd say Warship Voyager if it wasn't just a myth, it looked radical.

Revised roster, I'd also include Eric and Shanarra (TNG: Parallels) and Sabrina Wildman (VOY: Endgame) too but idk where to put kids on a starship, I guess the Neverwere should have a daycare since not everyone they rescue from time-erasure is gonna be an adult.

A non-retarded child wouldn’t forget human language and go feral if they were dropped in the woods at age 8.
>>
>>221071419
Actually they do. Have you ever read feral children case studies? It's pretty brutal. It's not about merely forgetting like you're a robot that dropped your sd card. It's complete mindbreaking from shock and stress. They disassociate and lose the ability to interact on a rational human level.

Also most feral children weren't "raised by wolves", more like chained up in an attic by other insane people. Really really sad shit.
>>
>>221071476
Those children were retarded, obviously
>>
>>221071476
Nta but I've read that in some cases of kids coming out of the wilderness feral they were found to have invented their own simple language by themselves, because having names for things is just how our brains operate. I think those cases are mainly sequestered to the beginning of the last century and prior though, so anecdotes might be questionable.
>>
>>221071543
>invented their own simple language by themselves, because having names for things is just how our brains
Sometimes yeah. Naming is a critical component. There are other studies of deaf kids in third world countries who couldn't get educational needs met and couldn't communicate because no one knew how to deal with it, so people ended up thinking they weren't just deaf but completely invalid. There's a report I remember from a boy who recovered after receiving dedicated help and said he doesn't have any memories before the moment he he felt like he suddenly "woke up" in class to his teacher showing him that simple objects had names.

For those of you who genuinely don't like Strange New Worlds, what specifically doesn't work for you?

I'm not asking to argue, defend the show, or tell anyone they're wrong. I'm honestly interested in understanding the criticism from fans who have spent decades with classic Trek and feel SNW falls short. Is it the writing? The characterization? The tone? The way it handles canon? The balance between episodic storytelling and modern TV conventions? Does it feel too contemporary in its dialogue or themes? Or is it something harder to define that just makes it not feel like "your" Star Trek?

I'm especially interested in hearing from people who wanted to like it but couldn't connect with it. What elements from TOS, TAS, TNG, DS9, Voyager, or Enterprise do you feel SNW is missing, misunderstanding, or executing less effectively? Again, this isn't a troll post or an invitation to dunk on the series. I'd just like to better understand why some longtime Trek fans view SNW as one of the weaker entries when many others see it as a return to classic Trek storytelling.
>>
>>221072678
I don't dislike it but it winks and nods too much at the audience. I don't mind campy, nor not taking oneself seriously - i love TOS, Farscape, even Andromeda - and i do appreciate the fact that it is a "genre incubator" to try different things, but it is too Whedonesque to avoid allegations of insisting upon itself.

I don't mind gimmicky episodes, Community was a great series for that, but it seems like it's trying too hard here. The actual straightly done episodes, like the one on Rigel where everyone has their memory wiped daily, or the one that's a ripoff of that le Guin novella about Omelas, are excellently done.

Oh and I also think it's dumb as fuck to not give le Guin credit for ripping off her story whole cloth.

You can just smell the theatricality off it. You can smell that all the nerds have been kicked out of the writer's room. There's no real interest in science fiction or military fiction. They want spock and chapel to smooch and orchestral swells in big hero moments and dance numbers. And it's not their fault... the nerds are hard to work with and Hollywood is full of these empath types. It's more to say that the spirit of the times is dead and never coming back. Nostalgia is evil.

I personally think Captive Pursuit works well as an introduction, especially for someone coming off of TNG. O'Brien focused, gives you a QRD on the wormhole, Tosk is endearing, sort of functions as a prelude to the Jem'Hadar, contains core Trek values but foreshadows the kind of rule bending to come. It was the first DS9 'sode that won me over.

There are different levels of powerful non-corporeal beings.

Rewatched the TOS movies again recently. I think Star Trek I and III are good films, it's just unfortunately they are surrounded by II and IV which are great films, so they get overshadowed. V is hot garbage though, it's just bad all around. Glad the TOS crew got to go out on VI. Better than what the TNG crew has been put through.

Dukat became a wraith. Every single time we see one it dominates the host but in this case it was clearly Dukat in charge. The aliens even say he is still alive and with them, he 'ascended' to become one of them.

Oh I eventually watched all of Star Trek (1966-2005). I'm probably one of the few /trek/ semi-regulars who thinks highly of ENT S3 (in terms of entertainment & quality; I'm undecided on whether I want to consider ENT canon from a worldbuilding perspective). I wasn't a big fan of VOY but there were a few episodes I loved like The Thaw and Bride of Chaotica.

By what metric? Archer is arguably the greatest because he dealt with so many unknowns, was instrumental in founding the Federation and created the blueprint for all who followed him. Sisko is arguably the worst because he's a war criminal.

It's 25 years after Voyager returned to Earth. The camera is sweeping through the interior of an unfamiliar spacecraft.
We see some alien children running around, playing and laughing, we see that several of them are clearly Talaxian..
The camera comes to rest behind Mr Neelix, finishing up his ambassadors report to Admiral Janeway, who we see on the other end of the call on his small desk mounted viewscreen.
We are on board Neelix's nursery ship! He's on a mission to rescue all the Delta Quadrant children who have fallen through the cracks and he's on his way to Earth!

Join Neelix every week for exciting, dangerous and hilarious adventures, with his crew of misfits and outcasts as we serve a delicious meal at every port of call!

Have Tuvok come out to meet him as he requests Federation aid for his project. Tuvok gets a small security detachment to protect the humanitarian transport and considers himself the logical choice to lead the mission due to his past experience with Neelix and the Delta quadrant, Neelix is certain his old friend missed him infinitely.
Together they travel the Delta quadrant following very different playbooks as to the methods of dispensing aid.
legitimately not that bad of a proposal for a special. I miss specials.
