I'm watching the Friendly Borg episode of Andromeda and it's like the funniest sci fi bottle episode I've ever seen. It does the little philosophical "I KNOW NOW.. WHAT IT MEANS TO BE ALIVE.. If it's visibly different that might be a good pick. I'd say Warship Voyager if it wasn't just a myth, it looked radical.Revised roster, I'd also include Eric and Shanarra (TNG: Parallels) and Sabrina Wildman (VOY: Endgame) too but idk where to put kids on a starship, I guess the Neverwere should have a daycare since not everyone they rescue from time-erasure is gonna be an adult.

>>221071357A non-retarded child wouldn’t forget human language and go feral if they were dropped in the woods at age 8.
>>221071419Actually they do. Have you ever read feral children case studies? It's pretty brutal. It's not about merely forgetting like you're a robot that dropped your sd card. It's complete mindbreaking from shock and stress. They disassociate and lose the ability to interact on a rational human level. Also most feral children weren't "raised by wolves", more like chained up in an attic by other insane people. Really really sad shit.
>>221071476Those children were retarded, obviously
>>221071476Nta but I've read that in some cases of kids coming out of the wilderness feral they were found to have invented their own simple language by themselves, because having names for things is just how our brains operate. I think those cases are mainly sequestered to the beginning of the last century and prior though, so anecdotes might be questionable.
>>221071543>invented their own simple language by themselves, because having names for things is just how our brainsSometimes yeah. Naming is a critical component. There are other studies of deaf kids in third world countries who couldn't get educational needs met and couldn't communicate because no one knew how to deal with it, so people ended up thinking they weren't just deaf but completely invalid. There's a report I remember from a boy who recovered after receiving dedicated help and said he doesn't have any memories before the moment he he felt like he suddenly "woke up" in class to his teacher showing him that simple objects had names.
>>221071694>he doesn't have any memories before the moment he he felt like he suddenly "woke up" in class to his teacher showing him that simple objects had names.Terrifying to think about
For those of you who genuinely don't like Strange New Worlds, what specifically doesn't work for you?I'm not asking to argue, defend the show, or tell anyone they're wrong. I'm honestly interested in understanding the criticism from fans who have spent decades with classic Trek and feel SNW falls short. Is it the writing? The characterization? The tone? The way it handles canon? The balance between episodic storytelling and modern TV conventions? Does it feel too contemporary in its dialogue or themes? Or is it something harder to define that just makes it not feel like "your" Star Trek?I'm especially interested in hearing from people who wanted to like it but couldn't connect with it. What elements from TOS, TAS, TNG, DS9, Voyager, or Enterprise do you feel SNW is missing, misunderstanding, or executing less effectively? Again, this isn't a troll post or an invitation to dunk on the series. I'd just like to better understand why some longtime Trek fans view SNW as one of the weaker entries when many others see it as a return to classic Trek storytelling.
>>221072678I don't dislike it but it winks and nods too much at the audience. I don't mind campy, nor not taking oneself seriously - i love TOS, Farscape, even Andromeda - and i do appreciate the fact that it is a "genre incubator" to try different things, but it is too Whedonesque to avoid allegations of insisting upon itself.I don't mind gimmicky episodes, Community was a great series for that, but it seems like it's trying too hard here. The actual straightly done episodes, like the one on Rigel where everyone has their memory wiped daily, or the one that's a ripoff of that le Guin novella about Omelas, are excellently done. Oh and I also think it's dumb as fuck to not give le Guin credit for ripping off her story whole cloth.
>>221072678i became interested in snw when i saw the klingon boyband clip on yt. we need more klingon boyband singing dancing.
>>221072678The modern language, the open camp fires, the agility of the ship, the cast. I like the theme song tho
>>221072986Do you not like any of the cast? Not even Pike? Or the Based S1 Aenar Engineer
>>221073172Pike is alright, but written terribly. Like in the pilot's first contact situation he tells the aliens that he got a glimpse of his own fate... what a weird thing to open the conversation with an alien race.
>>221072678You can just smell the theatricality off it. You can smell that all the nerds have been kicked out of the writer's room. There's no real interest in science fiction or military fiction. They want spock and chapel to smooch and orchestral swells in big hero moments and dance numbers. And it's not their fault... the nerds are hard to work with and Hollywood is full of these empath types. It's more to say that the spirit of the times is dead and never coming back. Nostalgia is evil.

I personally think Captive Pursuit works well as an introduction, especially for someone coming off of TNG. It's 25 years after Voyager returned to Earth. The camera is sweeping through the interior of an unfamiliar spacecraft. We see some alien children running around, playing and laughing, we see that several of them are clearly Talaxian..The camera comes to rest behind Mr Neelix, finishing up his ambassadors report to Admiral Janeway, who we see on the other end of the call on his small desk mounted viewscreen. We are on board Neelix's nursery ship! He's on a mission to rescue all the Delta Quadrant children who have fallen through the cracks and he's on his way to Earth!Join Neelix every week for exciting, dangerous and hilarious adventures, with his crew of misfits and outcasts as we serve a delicious meal at every port of call!
>TNG era Ferengi 'sodeGuilty pleasure, and a great example of living in a glass house. Hollywood criticizing Capitalism never works.>>221092605>Neelix cooking for Delta quadrant kids in needI'd watch it, as a four-part christmas special type deal. But why would he be travelling to earth if his goal was feeding the Delta quadrant?
>>221092725Neel just wants to catch up with his bro Tuvok, we'll make up a reason as we go
>>221093019Have Tuvok come out to meet him as he requests Federation aid for his project. Tuvok gets a small security detachment to protect the humanitarian transport and considers himself the logical choice to lead the mission due to his past experience with Neelix and the Delta quadrant, Neelix is certain his old friend missed him infinitely.Together they travel the Delta quadrant following very different playbooks as to the methods of dispensing aid.legitimately not that bad of a proposal for a special. I miss specials.
>>221093117I'd watch it. It always bothered me how Neelix left the ship like a week before Voyager got back. His friends should have shown him around their home.
Ocampans are the perfect slave race.
>>221093185He realized he didn’t have permissions to permanently delete his holodeck save data so he had to get out of there before the computer got debriefed at star fleet
>>221092605Total Neelix Death
>>221093185I feel like this might've been a setup to have him welcome the new crew of a 25th century ship like Quark did for Voyager in their pilot. But for some reason we've since gotten prequels, alternate timelines, visions of a far future, throwbacks, even whatever Section 31 was supposed to be but no continuation of the original formula.I'm just grateful they didn't decide to turn him into a cheap metaphor like Icheb.

I have to stop listening to Star Trek fans>voyager is terrible!I start watching it and I like it better than TNG>Neelix is jar jar!Turns out he’s a well acted and mostly well written character who is genuinely funny most of the time>threshold is the worst episode of all timeI actually watch it and it’s a B- at worst. Had some good character work for Tom Paris and some great horror elements (voyager is very good at horror)
