Finally got around to seeing Hokum. Pretty good, some nice spooks, felt a little messy near the end.
The witch was really fun, wished they would've done a little more with her.
I like that they didn't try to make her some super gross or monstrous looking person, it's just an old lady, and it worked.

LMAO I just finished this...
It's half cringe kino, half terrible. The politics of it are kind of baffling. Firstly he's a rich kid landlord, that doesn't seem like the chud fantasy. Also casting Armie Hammer as an uptight vigilante who murders woman abusers is pretty ironic right... and Hammer is terrible to the point it distorts the film and makes it unclear if you're even supposed to root for him, including just murdering random people. It fails where Rampage succeeded.
Positives? Has some classic "what I just murdered a bunch of bad guys" stuff, maybe occasionally transgressively racist. But the /pol/ rants are boring most of the time. It needed that "Hatred trailer monologue" energy.

I don't know. I saw both and liked the modern TV Ghosthunter better than Tangina. On the other hand why does everybody have to have personal problems (2015 version), why can't we have a film about a family living the American dream in a sunny suburb and only THEN does something scary happen? (1982 version). I think I like the original Poltergeist better.

"Cellar Dweller" (1987) is another very cheap 1980s horror film. They have one (1) location, one rubber creature and a handful of actors, of which Yvonne de Carlo is top billed and Jeffrey Combs has a very short role for about 2 minutes of screen time. The story idea would have been good enough for a segment in a 3- or 4-story anthology, but not enough to fill a full 90 minutes. (The film is 77 minutes long and that includes titles and credits.)
Anyway, 30 years ago a comic artist brought a monster to life by drawing it, and now a female comic artist takes up his work and recreats the monster. In the end the monster is defeated by white out and/or burning the draft pages of the comic. The end.

Watching "To the Devil a Daughter" (1976) right now. One of the last Hammer films, this one already being an Anglo-German co-production. It has Richard Widmark, Christopher Lee and Denholm Elliot in it, and the titular character is played by Nastassja Kinski, daughter of the stark raving mad German actor Klaus Kinski (Nosferatu 1979).

IMDb notes:
>Before Richard Widmark was cast, his role had been offered to Nastassja Kinski's father, Klaus Kinski. He turned it down, stating that he had no issue being in a movie where his young daughter was fully naked, but he could not guarantee he would remain sober for the duration of filming.

Nastassja Kinski later appeared nude (age 15!) in an episode of the German crime series "Tatort" (crime scene) as a school girl who had a forbidden affair with her teacher. When a boy who likes her finds out, she kills him and blames an unknown assailant for the murder.

Based, hope you enjoy it. I wish she was in more horror films, she only did that one and Cat People '82 (which you should also watch if you haven't already).
She was the most beautiful woman ever, IMO.
>>
>>221276993
She was very beautiful. Although she has since revoked the right to screen any of her early nude scenes which she'd been coerced to film since she was 13 years old.

IMDb says she only got the role in "To the Devil a Daughter" because Hammer desperately needed money and the German production company that signed a deal with them demanded a German actor or actress in one of the lead roles.

I did not like "To the Devil a Daughter" (1976). It's competently shot, it has proper actors and interesting locations, but it's based on another bad book about satanists by Dennis Wheatley. Which got taken apart by the script writer and then other people who rewrote the script until it's a bit of a confused mess. So the last Hammer horror film had a lot better production values than earlier ones, but also a weaker story.

I wonder if that includes that Wim Wenders film or if it's just the classic case of actors distancing themselves from low budget horror films they used to kickstart their career.

Gamers disliked it because it was too different
Non gamers disliked it because it still was mostly based on a game structure or due to the REPUTATION of the game. OR because it wasn't exactly like the first movie.
Also supposedly there has being a lot of cut scenes due to the movie being too long so there might be a director's cut releasing later. One thing that could be said it was definitely done in an honest way and with love even if the result was clumsy
>>221278979
It's weird they even had some of the bad CGI because everything else they did with the practical effect looked good. all the creatures used practical effect with actors in suit beside the ugly ass cockroach. the only bad practical effect was James beard, I don't know what the director was thinking here, the scene is well filmed too so it almost ruin it.
Maybe it was just due to budget, but if they had everything done in practical, it would have looked better in the scenes which overused CGI.

The bad stuff that stood out was partly Gans fault, like the spiderlady screaming directly into the camera.
But I like surreal films, so other parts of it heightened the film to me. Like at the start when he finds Angela with the sandbags, the background of it all gave me the feelings I get when I see matte paintings, magical like Wizard of Oz.
Even the beard I was fine with, because it's strange. It's a touch of the surreal, like he's imagining himself with a beard.
I should rewatch it to see if it has the same effect as it did on me in theater.
>>
>>221291373
In a funny way, the guy doing things that are super odd is probably closer in style to what the original game was doing than it's remake which tried to be open to new players.
but it ended up being too odd for almost everyone.
It's a bit of a clumsy movie with a few baffling choices, but I cannot hate it.
Sometime you have some bad shot then 15 seconds later you get a beautiful shot or another which completely recreate an area from the original game like it actually existed. it's a really weird movie.
Acting also was decent though I read some people said it was badly acted for some reasons.
>>
>>221291484
I'm glad someone else recognizes it for that because yeah that's what I thought. It's full of flaws but also full of interesting shots, music, even the main actor who I originally didn't like the casting for did a great job. He had a great face for silhouetting in the dark.
>>
>>221291655

hmm looking at her wiki page she stuck with horror and has starred in a lot of stuff.

Well giallos often had nudity and they're the proto slashers. Maniac came out in 1980, though it's atypical because it's about the killer.

Giallos are absolute garbage. But thanks for reminding me about Maniac. I was going to say if anything that might not count because it was independent, but according to Wikipedia it actually did fairly well, though did get censored in many territories. I can only surmise the trend just naturally came to be. You can briefly glimpse Michael's sister's and PJ Soles breasts in Halloween. It looks like a lot of lower budget copycat films upped the nudity but they didn't do very well. Then both Halloween II and Friday the 13th came out with at least one dedicated nude scene and they did extremely well.

Good morning /hor/! Threadly reminder that I am owed reparations for A Streetcar Named Desire and I would like them in the form of Longlegs-esque and The-Empty-Man-esque (my two favorite kinos) kinos that align with/inform my Catholic, Christian, conservative, crypto-fascist worldview.

I would also like to take this opportunity to remind you guys that horror only really works when it has a Catholic, Christian, conservative, crypto-fascist moral at its core. The entire genre of post-apocalyptic zombie thrillers, for example, ask the question of what happens when order, structures and institutions come down. They are inherently anti-Revolutionary. A Quiet Place can be read as a critique of political correctness and one of the first victims gets cancelled by one of the monsters from space for praying out loud.

Furthermore, as Jay Dyer points out in his Esoteric Hollywood, paraphrasing: the elites have the same sexual morals as the poor underclass. So, really, it has been my competent, huwhite, high IQ, middle-class-to-upper-middle-class, Catholic/remnants-of-order-found-in-Protestantism social class that has restrained the baser instincts of man and kept Western Civilization running for a thousand+ years.

I’d also like the following actors/actresses to be turned into A-listers:
>Jack Kesy
>Ignacyo Matynia
>Ryan Hurst
>Caleb Landry Jones (I like this guy’s face)

>Felicity Jones

I wish hollywood would remake more high concept/low budget 70s movies instead of just milking successful 80s nostalgia-bait constantly
God Told Me To is such a great concept but 90% of the movie is people walking around dingy 70s buildings, and the last act just takes a hard turn into a weird direction that I feel like doesn't really fit and could have been done better.
>>
>>221299027
I recall at some point Gaspar Noe wanted to remake this.

Flatliners is a fine film. I was pleasantly surprised that a film with 3 A listers in lead roles is so willing to spend so much time in unreality. I always appreciate a story with the theme of redemption through accountability. It's beautifully shot and visually striking. Well acted. My minor gripes are that the dialogue seems overwrought and the comic relief character is a bit obnoxious and I think entirely unnecessary. I think for its subject matter and runtime it could do with a bit more depth in portraying the characters' internal struggles in contending with their past wrongdoings, but even so, the three main characters have a solid arc and the full outline of what they needed for that is all there. It does what it sets out to do successfully. Totally worth watching.

>>221294967
You may like this one. It deals with the consequences of playing God and the necessity of repentance for moving forward. The main characters are doctors doing their residency in a Catholic hospital and has some associated imagery, but it is not overtly religious.
>>
Just finished. A governess is hired by a rich couple to watch their daughter who is obsessed with an imaginary friend she says lives inside a statue of a little boy on their property. If course creepy and eventually deadly occurrences take place. It's a classy, dull modern Gothic from the director of Poison for the Fairies, and fits his typical slow style. For fans of The Innocents and such like it but nowhere near as good. Has a cool gotcha ending, but otherwise is just something slightly abnormal happening and all the adults going "how?" and the little girl saying "it was Hugo!" over and over again. Not too impressive.
