Good afternoon /hor/! Threadly reminder that I am owed reparations for A Streetcar Named Desire and I would like them in the form of Longlegs-esque and The-Empty-Man-esque (my two favorite kinos) kinos that align with/inform my Catholic, Christian, conservative, crypto-fascist worldview.

I would also like to take this opportunity to remind you guys that horror only really works when it has a Catholic, Christian, conservative, crypto-fascist moral at its core. The entire genre of post-apocalyptic zombie thrillers, for example, ask the question of what happens when order, structures and institutions come down. They are inherently anti-Revolutionary. A Quiet Place can be read as a critique of political correctness and one of the first victims gets cancelled by one of the monsters from space for praying out loud.

Furthermore, as Jay Dyer points out in his Esoteric Hollywood, paraphrasing: the elites have the same sexual morals as the poor underclass. So, really, it has been my competent, high IQ, middle-class-to-upper-middle-class, Catholic/remnants-of-order-found-in-Protestantism social class that has restrained the baser instincts of man and kept this civilization running for a thousand+ years.

I’d also like the following actors/actresses to be turned into A-listers:
>Jack Kesy
>Ignacyo Matynia
>Ryan Hurst
>Caleb Landry Jones (I like this guy’s face)
>Kristen Bell
>Felicity Jones
>Maika Monroe

I just watched this shit and I don't know what the hell it was and don't watch it. Some guy on a cliff kills himself (I think) and wakes up in a field in a toga and finds a girl with her foot caught under a log. He helps her and then tries to pick her up but she turns into a pile of firewood. He goes off and finds her with her foot caught under a log again sonhe beats her to death with a stick. Then some nude women in a different field look at each others' vaginas while the narrator reads poetry for 45 minutes. Finally the dead girl wakes up, finds the other girls, they chase the dude through the woods then tie him up and stab him with swords, the end.
>>
>>221340468
Was the color exciting at least?

>>
>>221340535
I'm 90% sure it was shot in upstate New York. Mnadisika was a character in a book of lesbian poetry some French guy in the 1890s said he'd translated from ancient Greek but that everybody figured out basically immediately he'd just made up himself. But they also really liked his lesbian poetry and eventually some bitch in SF in the 60s named her clothing shop after Mandisko and made bell bottoms popular.

Well, it sounded like some pretty weird shit, and often weird folk tales that foreigners have heard where they grew up might explain why it's so weird. Other times it's just some artsy "auteur" with some troubled visions that he turns into his "oeuvre".
>>
>>221340903
I think having old fake greek poetry read out loud the entire movie was just the only way they could get away with showing closeups of vaginas for nearly an hour during the 60s

Folk tales and folklore is always weird.
A tv show like pic might not work as well in the US compared to Sweden (or any of the Nordic countries + Germany), since it's based on old folklore but in a modern setting. Shit we all grew up with and was terrified of because our grandparents used to scare us half to death when we were kids with these stories (there is a legit reason for it though).
>>
>>221340940

Not really horror, more of a detective thriller. On the mysterious side of things. It may not make sense at all if you don't know the folklore though.

>Folk tales and folklore
In my country the Brothers Grimm tried to collect as many of them as possible at a time when they were alread disappearing, when industrialization had alread set in. Some had wandered in from France or Italy and been changed while being retold. And a lot of tales were later sanitized so that they were somewhat suitable for children.

There are some interesting Youtube channels that tell the really gruesome and murderous real life customs and histories that were the basis for fairy tales like "Snow White" or "Sleeping Beauty".

It was originally on Swedish television.
Pic is kinda what you are in for in many ways (without spoiling too much).
>>221341334
Second season was ok, the first season is much better imo. But overall if you are into mysterious thrillers i would say yes.
>>
What the fuck am I even watching?
>>
>>221341393
>And a lot of tales were later sanitized so that they were somewhat suitable for children.
Yeah it's the same in Sweden, we still have a lot of the original tales due to our folk music and art (paintings, books, poems, various traditions etc.).
However, a lot of Swedes got to hear the most horrific ones, as they are cautionary tales for children to not wander too close to water, or go into the forest by yourself.
What better way to make sure the children don't do any of that? By telling them the most horrific fates of people that did.
Lol, kinda messed up when you think about it.
>There are some interesting Youtube channels
Feel free to hook me up, it's an interesting topic.
>>
>>221341425

I managed to see this before the criterion edition made it a meme and was expecting a regular horror movie and me and my friends almost hurt ourselves laughing. Permanent favorite.

Ok thanks. Looking at some torrents for it, not sure if english subs are embedded in the mkvs, but opensubtitles has them.
>>
>>221341555
Yeah without subs you might have a hard time following. However, i watched it with a friend from the UK, and the subs were bad, like really bad. A lot got lost in translation. Especially during the more old time Swedish parts.

So now for something of an oddball, I know a few people know of Dario Argento’s Giallo 2009, but there was another one named “Giallo?” From 2009 too, by Antonio Capuano. Plot summary makes it sound somewhat interesting plus the historical bit of it being Barbara Bouchet’s last gialli helps its intrigue, though Argento’s release from the same year makes it nearly impossible to search for. Only “footage” online besides some promotional stills is this it seems, and since theres a near 0 interest for it, I feel asking about it here is my best bet to raise awareness on it. Will post some of the other stuff I found if anybody is interested though

You want the plot summary I have or info on where it actually is? Because for the latter, I’m guessing theres a copy in the Italian government’s archives, since there’s an official note of it on the Italian government notes (103243), but I’m guessing theres nothing like the print being destroyed or whatever happening, more a lack of interest in being re-released or on the distributor

Why does the elderly florist Zemeli (Carlo Cantore) spend so much time watching TV news reports about the murder of former Nazis in hiding in South America? Who are the people in the videotape from Israel that he’s so fond of playing? Is he a victim, a murderer, both? In Mystery? director Antonio Capuano sets aside the strongly imagined stories set in his native Naples, such as Pianese Nunzio: Fourteen in May, for an austere tale set in a gray city in northern Italy and characters who lead closed, almost impenetrable lives. Zemeli, a fastidious elderly bachelor, divides his existence between TV dinners and taking orders in his flower shop. The mystery begins when he starts to see himself on television in ghostly, violent images. Ably incorporating elements of film noir, and balancing the film between danger and irony, Capuano and cinematographer Luca Bigazzi create an atmosphere of suspense that hovers over this ordinary man all the way to the film’s ambiguous conclusion. This new Italian film is being screened in Taormina as a world premiere.
Basic plot summary, at one point had a review that went a bit more in depth somewhere but can’t find it on a blog from around the time it was shown at a film fest, again this is a really slippery film to find anything concrete on besides the stuff listed here

Sometimes I feel like enjoying horror is more-so because it makes good background noise, especially after seeing so much.
It's like you're trying to recapture the shock and fear you once had and so now you watch schlock horror just for the cheap thrills.
Idk... you ever feel like the genre has deteriorating returns?
(does this even make sense?)
>>
>>221347221

Horror is so much more than just watching a movie, and yes it is good background noise. I love horror movies but I dont need to watch a movie every day and I dont need to pay attention to or finish every movie I throw on. I enjoy reading about/discussing horror, I enjoy shopping for horror movies and collecting, I enjoy seeing what the latest release are for boutique labels, I enjoy showing friends and family the best kino, I enjoy seeing how horror films I enjoy are ranked/reviewed etc etc
>>
>>221347533
I get what you're saying, and you'll never go back to being a teenager seeing their first nightmare on elm street and being creeped out for days after. You just get older, see more movies, and appreciate them for what they are. I'm lucky that if the atmostphere is right I can still get that feeling from a good horror movie, if you can't maybe try taking a break from them, watch action movies for a while or something I don't know

>>
>>221347533
I think I appreciate the classics more than when I first saw them. Rather than the shock I can see the subtly, the nice sets, the great dialog etc. Back when I first started watching horror I expected everything to be as good as Alien.
Also I still get the magical moments hidden in films that given me that pure distilled feeling of seeing something very creepy.

>>221347691
That could be it. Maybe just genre saturation cause I feel like I'm almost watching things just to analyze an effect or story beat vs just enjoying it for what it is. Maybe also just need to lock in, full lights out, no distractions, and let the creep factor kick in. But yeh in the meantime been getting a bit more in 80s/90s HK action which is a nice change of pace.
>>221347836
That's a big one, for sure. Not always about the scare and stuff. The setting can really have a sense of dread on its own which is often way more scary.

Children Shouldn't Play with Dead Things

It's kind of a proto-Evil Dead where a group of hippies go to an island cemetery and do a satanic ritual, which causes cannibalistic zombies to come crawling out of their graves.

On that topic, I would be curious to know what the earliest movie would have been to feature undead ghouls rising out of their graves.

>>
>>221349043

>>
>>221349064
I liked it less than I thought I would. Obnoxious sound design and really didn't feel like "Evil Dead" to me. I don't see the point if Raimi isn't directing it, as his style is what makes the original films work more than anything.
I'll still see the new one of course, but I don't have high expectations of it either.
>>
>>221349478
I didn't like it at first either, Evil Dead to me meant Raimi and Campbell and nothing else qualified, but now I've accepted the transition. I HATED ED '13 but now see how it bridged the tone of the two trilogies (still hate it, but maybe I should rewatch.) I what convinced me to accept the new ones as genuine was they've got a MEAN sense of humor, which is what the originals had, just during a lighter time altogether. I also consider The Mummy part of the franchise and hope they officially merge the two somehow.

It seems like what they're doing now is essentially an anthology series of films without any continuity but with just the necronomicon and deadites to tie them together. I think I prefer this approach than for them to continue building on a cinematic universe, which would necessarily become clunky and bloated.

My advice, don't plan too much. Have a few movies ready that you definitely want to watch, but also leave plenty of space available for shit films that you wouldn't otherwise watch. Binging bad horror movies late at night, to me, is a major part of the season. Leave some of it up to fate, whatever you scroll across that night that sounds interesting even if you've never heard of it before. If you find something ridiculous, post it here for your /hor/ bros to laugh and marvel at.

I'm not going to tell you it's better than Hellraiser.
I'm going to tell you that if it had a better name and weren't making an anthology out of a much worse 1980s movie, and didn't come out the same year as Hellraiser, it would have gotten more recognition for some of the surreal horror scenes, and that one or two of them may even be better than the best of the original Hellraiser, if less lavish.

Alright Darlene, just finished. Here is the 1981 Egyptian remake of Rocky Horror, "Fangs." Why does such a thing exist? No idea, but I have to guess some Egyptian producer saw RHPS and liked its energy, and thought hey this could make some money in Egypt if we took out all the crap about trannies from outer space, so that's exactly what they did, lmao. The music is all original, none of the Richard O'Brien songs, and they're all disco. The setup is the same, Brad and Janet on the road and have to stop at a castle, but right past the point where they do the Time Warp the movie drops the Rocky storyline and is all about vampires. There's no Frank-N-Furter, the owner of this castle is Dracula himself, though now he looks like a swarthy Arab in a gold vest. They eventually escape with the help of Egyptian Riff Raff and run to the real pyramids, where a small orchestra with a midget playing maracas are waiting and everyone lives happily ever after.

I'd like to see a Final Destination style movie about natural disasters. Basically bridge the gap properly into horror by making them sentient somehow.

Aw shucks
It's got a good bit of licensed music in it: the pink panther theme, the jaws theme, the james bond theme, music from clockwork orange, the fucking Munsters theme. I don't know if anyone's going to be able to pull this one off legally, kek.
