What unknown language were they speaking?
AHHHHHHHHH FUCK YOU KEIKO
>>222071676>The Japanese spoken by the Rikers during their fight in this ring is poorly pronounced. What they were trying to say from the text in the script was "Yoroshiku onegaishimasu" (よろしくお願いします, which is a standard "first meeting" phrase in Japanese which literally means "please treat me gently") which, in this situation could be taken to mean "Well met, please do your best." (Instead of the words being romanized, closed captioning says, "ceremonial chant," which is untrue.) When knocked to the ground, the competitors would shout "Mate!" (待て) which means "Wait!"

ST: The Motion Picture was a great movie. I guess it isn't my first time seeing it because I did know about Vger, but this was my first time watching the whole thing start to finish. The long sequence with Kirk and Scott looking at the Enterprise made sense because you got a scale understanding of how big Vger's ship was.

>>222081807>Michael Piller recalled his modifications to the script to placate Meaney: "We needed a reason for it to be happening and we came up with the idea that O'Brien would be telling a bedtime story about a leprechaun. We had the script written, and Colm Meaney called Rick [Berman] and said, 'Every Irish actor I know has worked his entire life to overcome the stereotype of Irish people and leprechauns. It's really racist, and I don't want to do it.' We had no idea there was any sensitivity to leprechauns in the Irish culture and certainly we did not want to force Colm Meaney to act with a leprechaun, but what the hell do you do after you've got a whole story structured around a leprechaun stealing a child? Well, we went through story tales and Robert [Hewitt Wolfe] came in with Rumpelstiltskin, and we went by it at least once, maybe twice, because Rumpelstiltskin wasn't exactly the same thing and wouldn't work in the structure we had. When I finally sat down to rewrite it, I said, 'Okay, Rumpelstiltskin – let's see where it goes.' It was one of those scripts where I had no idea how to resolve it or where it was going to go. I wrote each scene to see if it worked and had fun with it."

Kim doesn't need the promotion at all, it means nothing in the Delta Quadrant where no matter your rank you'll still be performing mostly the same duties with the same people tomorrow, the day after that and next year.Toms whole deal is that he can't live up to the expectations of his father who is an admiral, rank and honors are his love language. Kim on the other hand just wants to do a good job and prove it to himself, he has the full love and support of his family and girlfriend as well as the Captain and crew when the journey starts. By the time they return to the Alpha quadrant where rank actually matters, he has a list of commendations and reports of excellency longer than anyone else after his first mission and gets to apply anywhere, from any Starfleet division to pretty much any Federation agency, in a position of his choosing while Tom Paris can become a flight teacher for academy students in Marseille with his wife and kids and rise the Starfleet ranks slowly. They made a fun Lower Decks episode out of it though
