Just realised now that film as an artform completely and totally ended in 1979. The 70s were incredibly stacked, one of the strongest decades of film, and then everything from 1980 onwards is just derivative genreslop. Even the directors who made interesting shit in the 60s and 70s ran out of ideas as the decade changed. At least that makes it easy to define what 'classics' means.
Hmmm... shit pickle, shit pickle.
>>222174150Skill issue, there is so much good shit from the 80's and 90's that it should make your head spin. Maybe if you specified that you were talking about mainstream big studio American films after 1984 or so you would have half a point.
>>222174379Name 10
>>222174150There was no Italian or French movie made between 1955 and 1985 that isn’t worth watching. Yes even Godard.

My second time watching it, this time on Criterion's 4K.I still think it's way overrated. I really want to like it, but while I can relate to its themes and appreciate, on some level, its subversive qualities, I think it just doesn't say a whole lot or have very good execution. Love Warren Beatty, but he can't carry it on his own either. When I see that it has a 4.1 (4.2 a moment ago) on Letterboxd, I just don't understand why. Westerns are my favorite genre now, and I think this is a weaker example of even 1970s westernsLooks like shit for 90% of the movie, sounds like shit for 90% as well. The thing that most sticks is the Leonard Cohen soundtrack.

Am I the only one who rates Ringo Lam above John Woo? I enjoyed Prison on Fire and School on Fire a lot more than most of Woo's films. I honestly don't like Woo's action style I like his more dramatic films. I think his best two films are A Better Tomorrow and Bullet to the Head. Chow Yun Fat is more interesting in A Better Tomorrow once he gets injured.

And while in Japan, he had a kimono made with a ghastly word written on the back of it—I guess the filthiest that is in the Japanese language—and gave it to Menzies as a gift. Of course, with all the Japanese in Los Angeles, there were people falling back in horror at the sight of this thing, and Menzies hadn’t the faintest idea as he was walking around in it.

>>222231237Where do I start with Can? I can deal with unconventional music.
>>222231541Tago Mago unironically... it doesn't matter really, all of their early stuff is brilliant. They invented post-punk in their 1st album (before proto-punk even existed).
>>222231541Listen to the trilogy of albums they did with Damo Suzuki (Tago Mago, Ege Bamyasi, Future Days). They're all masterpieces and massively influential. The first half of Tago is groovy psychedelic jams, the second half is avant-garde ambient stuff. Ege is the most accessible one overall (Vitamin C and Sing Swan Song are legitimately catchy). Future Days is more atmospheric and improvisatory, but it might be my favorite album of theirs overall.
