Since STAR TREK WARPS SPACE and creates a bubble around the ship to carry itself faster than light, the warped space could be quite destructive against matter.But here's a CHEAPER idea. CHON MATTER (Carbon-Hydrogen-Oxygen-Nitrogen) makes most of our usable matter. Need a cheap force field inside a ship? Make a plastic sheet, vibrate it a hypersonic speed. Repels matter, cheap to deploy, cheap to indefinitely repair. In fact, why not surround the ship in a gooey plastic double air bubble to grab lightweight high-speed matter (think inflatable swimming pool, air trapped in the pool wall layer).You could then build harder plastic walls from Tupperware bowl flexibility to hard clear plastics. Embed the structure with nano-diamond dust for heat transferring and structural durability.Imagine shooting a Starship that shoots out wave after wave of cheap nano-diamond infused plastic walls of cheap sticky inflated plastic at you. Most kinetic weapons would fail. Laser weapons would be diffused. Antimatter beams would disintegrate the plastic to a degree. And so long as you have energy to suck the CHON matter back up again, you won't lose any of it for food or air recycling. You can also create CHON structures, like Green Lantern does, and fire kinetic ultradense diamond balls or blobs of sticky goo to gum up their weapons systems. Globs of viruses too.
Now, you might say, "Forcefields PLASTIC?!?"Imagine a beaded curtain made of hard plastic with the refraction index of air. Or Transparent Aluminum (aka Ruby, Sapphire, Beryl, Topaz, Turquoise, Jadeite, Kyanite) as a beaded curtain wall. You could pass through easily when loose, but it's nearly impossible to pass through is tensioned up or vibrating or merged into a solid wall. The curtain in beaded string form could be as thin as a human hair with razor sharp beads or smooth spheres. A tangled web or ghostly wires.
