I don’t get the hype for Akira Kurosawa. His shots don’t linger enough. Almost too snappy and there’s not enough mise en scene.

>>222719433>His shots don’t linger enough. Almost too snappy and there’s not enough mise en scene. This is literally why all of the Cahiers critics in the 60s thought Mizoguchi was the far superior artist. I actually think Kurosawa did his best work in the 80s.

>>222718909more of /film/ should read Otis Ferguson. decent bit of overlap in his aesthetic attitudes with some of the French critics people like here but he was writing in the '30s and early '40s. very suspicious of pretention and self-conscious artsyness, drawn to genre films and "classical" mise en scene before it would be theorized as such, but also more attuned to actors' performances. he's got a real slangy wisecracking style that makes all his work fun to read even if you haven't seen the film he's reviewing. sadly died in WWII, would've loved to read his thoughts on post-war cinema

>In such seemingly little ways he has managed to ad-lib, shift emphasis and bring out his own relief. But behind that is the basic appeal he has for the audience as a person under all that tough surface and fast talk people glimpse a sweet clarity of nature, a fellow feeling and rightness and transparent personal honesty. It makes all the difference in the world, and when he rips out a statement you sense without stopping to question that it is the living truth spoken through him, and not a line rehearsed and spoken on the set any longer. His screen life is not a natural autobiography, not something he just fell into. He is not a mug but one of the intelligent few; he isn’t a perpetual handspring but a man with a troubling illness; his conversation is more a subdued questioning than a bright explosion of syllables; >Don’t think because he didn’t produce Hamlet on Broadway last year that Cagney is automatically himself; and therefore, no actor. His art is in an intense projection of those qualities within himself which he feels to be honestly representative of something, and in the fact that while all that rapid fire and assurance and open charm are enough to take the audience anywhere he wants to go, he has a guiding notion of where he’s going. This Otis fellow understood that Cagney was modernity way back in 1937.

>>222721356>when I see jazz discussion online it's always 1950s and beyondYeah, that's most of it alright, and i'd wager when most people think of jazz they think of bebop. >>222741007>BerlinBased. I'm much more of a Cale fan, but this is my favorite solo Lou song. https://youtu.be/_O39M_iLVkUI've gotten Tony Levin's bassline stuck in my head multiple times.
Neigh.
>>222741452I like the songs before and after that the best. The Kids is really sad but as a song the aforementioned work better for me.
>>222741435Of course not.
>>222741732Whatever you say pal
>>222733374>No surprise that she was the one who wrote it (or rather, she rewrote what was in the script)That was hands-down my favorite scene… I wasn't expecting it to get so explicit/erotic.It's a shame the last 20min didn't really live up to the first hour.>>222740349Natalie's sister Lana is incredibly underrated.>>222740765Goofy Berto = best Berto.>>222741027>Jean Douchet wrote that her work as a director was "vibrant, tense, rebellious, and passionate, yet full of joy and humour."

>>222741806>vibrant, tense, rebellious, and passionate, yet full of joy and humour.Quite literally all me.
Mirth
>>222741806>the last 20min Did you not like the blind husband? Or the scene where they're drinking each other's blood? The only scene in Persona that I wasn't a big fan of was the compositing effect between their faces. It kinda took me out the first time I saw it.
>>222742185Heh.
Thoughts on this film? Is it deep?
>>222740765I can understand spoken french fairly well but Jean-François Stévenin is borderline fuckin incomprehensible good dude tho more people need to see the films he directed
>>222742243Long as fuck but the last 30 minutes make it worth it.Also watch Dragon Inn to Tsaimaxx.
>>222742243>pickek I thought she had bunny teeth for a second.
>>222742290Dragon Inn + Goodbye, Dragon Inn double feature = transcendental cinema
Chantal Akerman films = I wasted 3 hours of my life cinema
>>222742243It's a very good martial arts film.
>>222742400>women directors
>>222741435>>222741504I would sensually kiss her bony cigarette-hardened hand, then buy her a niiice big bowl of pork cassoulet.>>222742065lole!>>222742203>Did you not like the blind husband?Sort of? I mostly had issue with Bergman running the same exact 5min scene twice but at opposing angles. I get the intention behind it leading into the double face shot you mentioned, but it still frustrated me when this scene could've played out once with effective editing between the two perspectives and still conveyed the same idea without feeling redundant.
>>222742492We cherish women here.

Complaining about women having ass pubes is insane to me, that's like a paid extra.
I'm usually pube neutral though I do think that landing strip thing is really weird like having a soul patch for your vag
>>222742290>>222742450How does it compare to Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon?
>>222742738I don't really get what you're saying, but I really like hairy asses, hairy pussies and hairy armpits, those have to be paid extras, I think. Hairy legs are a no-no, thoughbeit. The history of cinema was saved by hairy women.

Films with depressed main characters? Like Verso from Expedition 33.
>>222743868Who from what?
>>222743886Verso is an immortal being that lives inside a paint. He was created by Aline based on her dead son, they say he's a perfect copy of the real Verso. He's depressed because a part of his soul still lives inside the painting, so unless the painting is destroyed and he dies he will never find peace. But since Aline can't cope with the fact that Verso is dead she won't destroy the painting. Films for that feel?

What
Speaking of depression how mainstream is Un Homme Qui Dort these days? I've seen it casually posted on /tv/ a few times now.
>>222744947Things are not mainstream until my normie sister knows about them and she has no idea what Un homme qui dort is.
>>222744947It's now widely considered one of the very greatest 70s French films. The influence of /film/ is immense.
>>222743868Help Me, Eros (2007)
>>222743269>top rightHow it feels to be *smooched* on /film/btw, I wonder what this racing video game was in Niege.
>>222718909They have reruns of these two still going feels like a blast from the past seeing them as a kid and an adult thinking differently about the films shown
>>222719129Growing in Vienna doesn't make you Australian. Literally everyone lived in Vienna at the turn of the century including Stalin or Tito. And Jews concentrated there, because that's just what Jews do. They moved all over the place and weren't anymore Austrian than they were American.
>>222744947>Un Homme Qui DortIt's Un homme qui dort
We say The Sleeping Man here
>>222745207This specific arcade game must have been really popular IRL because it shows up in a lot of stuff filmed around 1980

Do 4K discs have a longer shelf life than blu-rays under ideal conditions? Will they outlive me?
>>222746089All pics of Françoise are comfy pics

>>222746089>>222746147
>>222746150Oh yeah? Name five saints.
>>222746137About the same. Use an M-disc Blu-Ray if you want to archive something for longer than you'll live.
Forgot my phone in the car. >>222746218>>222746218>>222746218
>>222746185Why don't companies like Criterion use M-Discs for their releases? I thought they cared about physical media preservation?
>>222746248They're quite a bit more expensive than regular discs, and barely anyone is asking for them.
>>222746248>I thought they cared about physical media preservation? They've got all of their releases backed up multiple times over in long-lasting form. They don't count on the consumers to do the archival and preservation.
>>222746501>>222746585Is it better to just download the Remux version of their releases and burn them on an M-disc instead of buying their physical releases then?
>>222746738If you worry that much about Blu-Rays lasting. I've never had one fail and I have some that are 20 years old.
bump of /film/
>>222746987How long do you think they will last? Will they outlive you?
>>222735947>Is there a way to download from that site? The "Video Download Helper" browser plugin works. It does for most sites with those embedded players, as long as they don't use DRM.
>>222747485 NTA but disc rot is very rare even with cheap cds from the 80s and blu rays are made of much studier and less porus material. The sticker on them or the insert in the case is more likely to degrade first. I go to used stores weekly and havent ever come across any disc with discrot or that simply doesn’t work for any reason other than being cracked or scratched to oblivion.
Yo anyone seen Out of The blue by Dennis Hopper? I hadn't seen it in a decade and I just rewatched it and I was like damn this movie is depressing as fuck.
