>Dagger of the Mind
One of my personal favorites.
>>
>>223274252
>>223275784
It genuinely is a fantastic episode. Excellent performances from the three guest actors (Van Gelder, Adams, and Dr. Noel), first appearance of the Vulcan Mind-Meld. The switchover from Bones pushing Kirk to Kirk pushing back against Helen was a little rough, but it put the characters before the flow of the narrative so I can appreciate it. The testing of the Neural Neutralizer where Kirk lightheartedly talks about raiding a kitchen after the command "You're hungry" gets lodged into his subconscious was perfect. The Lobotomites running the asylum at Adams' command was just the right amount of unsettling. The opening scene with the transporter crewies forgetting Penal Colony protocols for the forcefield coming back for the finale with Helen disabling the main power grid and Spock beaming down was amazing. It's gotta be the best episode I've watched so far, and that's including the ones from later on that I caught bits and pieces of during the H&I marathon.
>>
File: Torment at Christmas.png (354 KB, 538x538)
354 KB PNG
>>
>>223276442
The insert of the fantasy sequence to show us how Kirk's brain interprets the command and fabricates the memory was both really clever and really fun. I like that they sort of hinted back to it with the coda when Bones says he can't believe a person could die of loneliness and we zoom in on Kirk who looks a touch wistful before he brightens back up.
>>

>>223276535
I've often wondered if Kirk's false memories were cured by his own realization that they were false, by another one of Spock's mindmelds, or did he have to endure another session with the neural neutralizer.
>>
>>223276713
The last seemed the most likely to me, since without Pain as a motivator it's not... AS terrible. It's still a brainwashing machine, but Adams had to insist on programming his subjects with pain as a deterrent from their true selves, rather than overwhelming the pleasure pathways to entrench the- oh wait that's the videogame episode from TNG.
The Mind-Meld is a more fun idea. I wonder if now that he knows it works he's gonna train it off-screen to reach the speed he deploys it with in later instances.
>>
star trek sex with david corwin
>>
>>223276788
I think I remember someone saying that the machine had been dismantled. But that doesn't negate the possibility that Kirk may have been put in it again, perhaps with Helen at the controls to correctly narrate what really happened at the Christmas party, since, if anyone knew, it would have to be her.

Death Wish is better than all of them because it's not about action or wish fulfillment. It's probably the only really philisophical Q episode in that classic Star Trek style. Q Who is on the same level or better as entertainment but it's shallow in comparison because it's just about drama and action. The other Voyager Q episodes are fun but not as good as Q Who/Death Wish.

Not having the full TNG cast like the first game had the full VOY cast is also pretty lame.

In layman's terms, why does FTL travel violate causality? What if communication is impossible during superluminal flight? No flow of information, no paradox, just a very fast ship.

when you reach superliminal speeds time reverses. so to an observer you would have reached your destination before you ever left for your destination.

there was something cool about this in halo, because the energy travels faster than light, the guy who fired the rings was receiving data on his firing of the rings before he fired them.
from the ark, the milky way galaxy he'd be seeing was light from half a million years ago, but when the rings fired you would see a burst of energy coming from the rings in places in the galaxy where the rings weren't and hadn't even been built yet.
>>

Went thrift shopping today and found these 2 history books. The one on the left was released in '94, the final chapter had some concept art for the USS Voyager, and a full list of episodes in Stardate order from The Cage up to DS9's season 2 episode "The Jem'Hadar". The one on the right is from '06 (obviously) and has a bunch of fun reproduction inserts, like the earliest iron-on pattern AMT ever made or a Spock Lives pennant from Wrath of Khan. No hint of NuTrek in either of them.
Funniest thing I found skimming through the one on the right is that they made a Q teddy bear, dressed up in his judge outfit. Curiously, there were no paper inserts for the Voyager chapter, even ENT got these "Rescue Emergency Evac" stickers from some unnamed episode.
Tonight's episode, The Corbomite Maneuver! 10th to air but 3rd in production order, the first non-pilot episode they filmed! See you in an hour.

So? There's plenty of combat in pre-JJ Trek, and these are videogames. This is like being mad at a Star Wars roleplaying game because it isn't pewpew lasers all the time.
Also, most of those represent the various forms of combat in Star Trek pretty well. If anything Elite Force is an unfaithful outlier by being a straight up Quake 3 clone with a bunch of new, contrived weapons.

This game has an entire mission where you're blasting the fuck out of these wiggly manta ray aliens left and right, and then they go "oh, they were just trying to communicate with us and psychically damaging us in the process... whoops".
I think they hand wave the alien deaths away, it's been a while. Wish it had a coop mod.

This really was a great way to show the strengths of all the main crew-/cast-members, though the tension of the affair does drag somewhat so it makes sense they'd pick the punchier Man Trap even if it neglects Scotty. Hell, this episode kinda neglects Scotty too, since he only shows up on the bridge at the start to say their sensors can't tell what the Cube is, and again at the end to say the engines are shot and need repairs. I would've said he could've filled Spock's role of reading out the rising temperature readings for the intermix, but he must've been hard at work on the Engineering Deck to make sure they DIDN'T blow and couldn't even spare a moment to call up, and since this was such an early episode they didn't have that set built to do a quick cut-away to.
I also really enjoyed the subplot with Bailey as a representative of all the other crewmen and a sort of audience surrogate, the way he gets so heated but collects himself again for the finale to show the true nature of humanity is in owning and correcting our errors. And how Kirk & Bones arguing about what they're gonna put on their reports is what gives Jim the idea to pull the titular maneuver, a Bluff.
The reveal of Clint Howard as the real Balok was something I had forgotten was from this episode, so it was a very pleasant surprise. I had already predicted the "all a test" twist from the moment the countdown hit 7 minutes, and the combined performances of Clint and voice actor Walker Edmiston was so light and hopeful for the future of alien contact that I got a little misty-eyed. That's what really makes this the best candidate for an introduction to the series.
>>223293814

The supporting code for the q3 engine it uses is actually very different. I was looking into it last night. EF2's source was released, EF1's wasn't except for the multiplayer, and that uses a separate EXE, so it doesn't have any of the same AI or scripting.
