His/her fixation on Harry in book 1 makes sense though because Harry breaks the social decorum that Malfoy has been raised to expect several times the first few times they interact. And if Harry was just a random commoner, that wouldn't be a big deal, but Harry because of his fame has great status in the Wizarding world. On top of that, many on the death eater side would have been wondering if Harry held the promise of being even greater than Voldemort, if he could be their future to rally behind. So Harry holds both status and mystery, and he practically slaps the hand offering friendship and guidance. Makes perfect sense that Malfoy, girl or boy, would want to figure Harry out and be a little on the obsessive side of 'how dare he disrespect me, I'll show him'.

The idea that's been swirling in my head is that beginning of book 6 they start seeing each other, in secret from others, because Malfoid wants to have something with Harry before her life is ruined. That would cover about first half or so of the book. Then after their christmas vacation she breaks up with Harry cause her fear of Voldemort finding out becomes too much to handle or her mom finds out and talks her into breaking it up (Lucius is in prison). Harry wants to know why and she dodges the question cause she doesn't want to tell Harry the truth so Harry doesn't try to play the hero and get involved. Harry ends up coming to a wrong conclusion that it was another one of her cruel jokes, she played with his feeling and threw him away and gets really angry, leading him to go into the whole thing proving she is a death eater leading to the bathroom fight.

No, there most definitely doesn't need to be one big defining event. It can easily be an accumulation of many things that Harry just naturally does. Harry is a rule-breaker. That gives him "bad boy" appeal which is intrinsically fascinating to aristocratic rule-following girls. But he's some kind of ugly, uncouth lower-class greaser bad boy, Harry is a wealthy, attractive pureblood. Harry also breaks rules for the sake of his friends, for virtuous reasons. He is brave and loyal, not merely a selfish jerk. He also doesn't give her any extra credit for being a pretty, high-class girl (unlike everyone else in her life). If you think anything else is needed, you really don't understand women at all.

It would be perfectly natural for attraction to grow very gradually in both of them. It doesn't have to be literally love at first sight on Malfoid's part, but it makes a lot of sense for her to be the one that develops attraction first, because Draco is the one the original book portrays as being obsessed. If Draco had just left Harry alone, Harry wouldn't have given a shit about Draco at all.

One of the things Harry Potter did really well was making Hogwarts feel like a home that you come back to, so I didn't find it hard to get back into. It's cool to come back to the same setting (up until 7) with most of the same cast, which is separates it from other movie series and makes it very comfy to return to.
