Watching late period Roman Polanski from, like, the late 90s with The Ninth Gate all the way up to the modern era, even with stuff like Ghost Writer, just feels so tragic. I mean, just so bad, all of this late-period stuff. What the hell happened? I think Polanski really needed Mr. Evans to elevate his material, because, I mean, it's very clear that after his middle-period work, he just fell off so hard. It's so tragic. I mean, I'm watching Ghost Writer right now because I had to give up on The Ninth Gate, and Ghost Writer is just so bland and boring and lacks any intrigue. It's just so flat and overlit, and even the darks don't even look good. It's just junk. It's absolute junk. Same with The Ninth Gate. That was so bad. I had to give up in a half hour. Because the early work is very European and not yet refined, like Repulsion. But then immediately afterwards, it just goes back to being bad. What is called "mental illness" is just a reaction to damage caused by the world... it's as if you called an amputee a man with "physical illness" and pretended meds would help him grow back his limbs. PDs are the same, a part of your brain is gone, there's no going back. There is just no hope.
