hand crafted textures do all the heavy lifting in those old games and the lighting is just a cherry on top. in modern games most textures are procedural mush that rely on lighting to look good

The issue is YOU DONT WANT REALISTIC TEXTURES if you want the game to look good. You dont look things from 10cm away when playing, so all the realistic details wont get noticed. Hence the textures look "flat" and need lighting to highlight things. Old games exaggerate things they want to highlight because resolution/lighting limitations, so things pop out more. As a result you subconsciously pick up more of those details. Its funny that traditional artists have largely abandoned photorealism for this very reason, but gaming industry still pushes for photorealism (plus of course the overtly reflective surfaces to have at least some shiny highlights pop up).

I should always progress at the same pace from beginning to end. I should never have to slow down or adjust how I play. I should never have to, god forbid, fail and have to restart a level. If I ever should fail I should never have to learn from how or why I failed. Difficulty should be a mostly flat line, and its upper bounds are reached the second I am even slightly annoyed by my lack of progress. If I eventually make it through a level after failing several times and slowly making progress further in I will feel zero sense of satisfaction for conquering it because what's more important than the game is analyzing it and posting about it online just to say I have beaten it.
