As someone who has played a lot of CRPGs, this is by FAR the hardest one I've ever played. Why is it so difficult? Side quests are not really optional in this game, you need every scrap of XP you can get if you want to survive fights. Am I doing something wrong?

Mitigate is not the same as shutdown entirely. Shutting down the enemy entirely removes an entire dimension of gameplay depth. It's the same way that teleport removes an entire dimension of combat depth. That's why the DMC comparison is even more apt, part of the shittiness of DMC is that positioning does not matter as your character will magnetize to enemies that cannot fight back. When you make CC and tp abundant you toss out entire systems. Why bother considering what the enemy might do when you know you can interrupt? Why care about position when you can teleport?
