It's really important to remember that REmake 2 wasn't a thing yet when RE7 came out. Capcom hadn't done a proper horror RE in over a decade, so any attempt to return to form, no matter how shoddily done, is still appreciated for even being an attempt. When RE7 came out it really was a massive breath of fresh air compared to what had become the norm for Resident Evil at that point.
