also a cool bit of background for Isildur, he was one of the people in ancient Numenor to openly defy Sauron after he became de-facto ruler via his lies and corruption.

The white tree in Minas Tirith only exists because he miraculously retrieved a fruit of the original tree before Sauron convinced the Numenorean king to burn it down in defiance to the Valar. One of the Valar created the first two great trees in Valinor that Morgoth and Ungoliant (who spawned Shelob) destroyed and drained of their light. The only remnant of the divine light within the trees survived in the jewels named the Silmarils that Morgoth eventually fashioned into a crown he wore.

LotR elves are great because their history is great and there's both good and bad in there, but most importantly they're going away and amount to friendly grand-grandpas seeing off their grandchildren starting to become true adults and taking care of things the right way.
Elves in LotR deserve respect and can fill stories of their own, but they're accessories to the human story of LotR, but not MERE accessories.
I like LotR elves. They're epic. Watch Rings of Power for more of them :)

it's been posted a lot by more educated autists than myself, but after Ungoliant drained the trees with the help of Morgoth she became so powerful that even Morgoth, once described as the most powerful being in all of Arda (Earth), became fearful of her.

When Morgoth initially recruited Ungoliant out of desperation and his extreme malice/jealousy of the beauty that the other Valar had created in Valinor represented by the great trees, he struck a risky deal with Ungoliant that promised her alleviation of her insatiable hunger by alluding to the promise of feasting on the trees.

However, after Ungoliant feasted on even the greatest light spawned in the world that was contained in the trees, Ungoliant still hungered and demanded the jewels that contained a remnant of that light, the Silmarils.

Morgoth was so consumed with covetousness by his desire for the jewels that he refused even though they seared and marred his hands as he held them, and Ungoliant in response overcame Morgoth and chained him with her webs.

His cries of pain were so great and dreadful that the ancient Balrogs awoke from their deep slumber underground and rose to his defense. Even Ungoliant was overwhelmed by the Balrogs and fled, her ultimate fate and whereabouts not being explicitly explained (she probably devoured herself out of hunger), but she did spawn all types of dreadful evil creatures including Shelob.

Later on the jewels would be consumed by another evil beast of Morgoth and the fury/wrath of that beast caused untold ruin and devastation.

female form is definitely not canon, and she is pretty important since she guards Cirith Ungol which is one of the vulnerabilities that can be exploited to get to Mordor.

Sauron trusted her might so much that he stationed a relatively lax guard there, even being content with sacrificing some of his orcs to feed her.
>I just remember Sam of all fucking people managing to beat her.
there's some additional context to just how triumphant and heroic of a task this is by Sam, it's said that she didn't even remember what it felt like to be harmed in ways that Sam wounded her. The local orcs were convinced it had to be some great elven lord that was nearby it was such an improbable and difficult feat.

Good, because it was kinda stupid.
>she is pretty important since she guards Cirith Ungol which is one of the vulnerabilities that can be exploited to get to Mordor.
So kinda midboss level, but still a guard. Kinda what I assumed, but was wondering if there was some important lore behind her besides just being the offspring of Ungoliant.
>there's some additional context to just how triumphant and heroic of a task this is by Sam
It wasn't a dig at Sam, I like the guy. But his strength is how loyal he is and making his wife pregnant. He isn't a fighter, so being beaten by him is kinda humiliating.
>great elven lord that was nearby
Didn't he grab Sting from Frodo? So technically not far off, since it's an elven blade. Did Sting have any special powers except for just glowing? Or was it just that sharp that getting stabbed hurts that much?

they were actually created at the behest of the Valar that originally created the flora of Arda, she held so much love for her creations that when she learned of the dwarves/men that would fell her trees for utility (unlike elves who held an inherent respect and adoration for all living things), she requested from Manwe (chief of the Valar) a living yet grown counterpart to them, thus he granted her the Ents who the elves taught to speak (hence the ongoing respect between the two races).

So in stupid terms, she just had a weakness to elven weapons and not like Sting was specifically made to have +5 damage to spiders. Huh weird. You would expect with a name like the witch-king, that there would have been some special reason behind that name. Especially since they are made to be such a threat. And looking at the run now, anything about their mounts? Some corrupted noble being or just some random wyvern that they tamed?

The Nazgul were human kings corrupted by the Nine Rings. The humans of the kingdom of Arnor, which used to be pretty close to the Shire, fought them in a long hard war. The barrows which the hobbits almost get trapped in and the Weathertop both are related to that ancient war. iirc the humans manage to defeat the Witch-King but their kingdom was cursed after that, so they scattered or became Dunedain. The swords which the hobbits get from the barrow are relics from that war, specially made to fight the magic of the Witch-King, which is why Merry's blade hurts him as bad as it does.

It's the reason why offtopic threads are often the best, since it only attracts the people actually interested in the topic. And in these situations, the interest in the topic actually motivates people to share. I feel like it used to be more common back on old /v/, like finding a lot of niche but fun games.

Gandalf makes some direct correlations, but I think Aragorn's a better expy. He's the savior of Men, and is eventually recognized as their king, uniting them all under one banner. Gandalf has his resurrection, but he's more of a guardian angel who likes to solve things with his fists.

Oh yeah, it's slowly coming back to me. It's pretty cool how the blade they got from the barrows plays such an important role. Not only because the lore became payoff later, but also in the sense that the kingdom managed to get their revenge in the end.

Yeah just smart thinking that makes sense. Oh having something sharp is handy, so lets make sure our weapons are extra sharp. Also, I'm now kinda seeing a pattern where ancient civilizations plagued by some evil force managed to get their revenge during the books. Like the blade from the barrows slaying the witch-king. >Some corrupted noble being or just some random wyvern that they tamed?
most of the beings that Sauron/Morgoth used were in fact corrupted beings that were created from torment and with a secondary intention of being a mockery of Eru/the Valar's original creations. For the winged mounts though their specific origin isn't mentioned from what i know, they're given out as a sort of 'upgrade' after the nazgul lose their mounts to Glorfindel (Not Arwen in the books) near Rivendell.

Legolas actually shoots one down early on, to which Saruman's orcs take the chance to mock the Mordor orcs as the seemingly invincible and much dreaded Nazgul were brought down by a single arrow.

Not sure but here’s some neat commentary that alludes to something jesus like:

Tolkien's commentary on Athrabeth Finrod ah Andreth:

Beyond the 'End of Arda' Elvish thought could not penetrate, and they were without any specific instruction. It seemed clear to them that their hröar must then end, and therefore any kind of reincarnation would be impossible. All the Elves would then 'die' at the End of Arda. What this would mean they did not know. They said therefore that Men had a shadow behind them, but the Elves had a shadow before them.

Their dilemma was this: the thought of existence as fëa only was revolting to them, and they found it hard to believe that it was natural or designed for them, since they were essentially 'dwellers in Arda', and by nature wholly in love with Arda. The alternative: that their fëar would also cease to exist at 'the End', seemed even more intolerable. Both absolute annihilation, and cessation of conscious identity, were wholly repugnant to thought and desire.
And even further:

He then has a vision of Men as the agents of the 'unmarring' of Arda, not merely undoing the marring or evil wrought by Melkor, but by producing a third thing, 'Arda Re-made'—for Eru never merely undoes the past, but brings into being something new, richer than the 'first design'. In Arda Re-made Elves and Men will each separately find joy and content, and an interplay of friendship, a bond of which will be the Past.
And even more:

Since Finrod had already guessed that the redemptive function was originally, specially assigned to Men, he probably proceeded to the expectation that 'the coming of Eru', if it took place, would be specially and primarily concerned with Men: that is to an imaginative guess or vision that Eru would come incarnated in human form. This, however, does not appear in the Athrabeth.

It's fun to just go around talking to the various aliens, they are by far the best and most unique thing about the game, and the thing the run massively skips over.

>so can't really play it for an hour and then wait a week before continuing.
What I do is keep a sort of diary with these older games where it leaves you to your own devices, just shit like brief notes about what I did so I remember the next time I pick it back up.

Yeah the runners and thread mentioned that. Think it's also a big inspiration for other scifi games, like mass effect. Loved the first one, so should like this.

For some reason I don't understand, modern speedrunning events are absolutely terrified of repeating common runs. Popular games like zelda or mario just aren't allowed to be run normally, it has to be a fucking randomizer or race or relay or whatever the fuck that completely ruins the whole point of a speedrun
>>
He misunderstands what a tank is
>>
>>683622376
*oliphant
>>
>>683622191
Runners eventually get bored when they know a route or handful of routes but nothing else, these randomizers and shit force them to learn the entire game.
>>
>>683622191
>everyone runs the same racetrack
Kek that is a good analogue. Imagine if the olympics randomized their track. Or even just made a bingo race. Nobody would want that, yet speedrun marathons keep doing it.
>>
>>683622208
Oh, that makes sense. I'm sheltered you see.
>>
This game is extremely soulful, but the amount of enemy copy and paste is staggering, from what I've seen of this speedrun.
>>
>>683622403
People start complaining when they've seen the same run about eight times, and views start to drop off somewhat.

Being that ESA have said the charity matters above all, the runs have to change to service the numbers going up and staying up.
>>
>>683622191
If you run the same game for years upon years I assume it would get pretty boring - randomizers and / or bingos (different goals instead of Any% etc.) help spice it up and can potentially help bring back the joy for the game instead of causing you to burn out on it.

Though I have to agree - It's a tricky balance for speedrun marathons where most viewers are probably much more interested in seeing a normal category like Any%, 100%, etc.
>>
>>683622498
>Imagine if the olympics randomized their track. Or even just made a bingo race. Nobody would want that, yet speedrun marathons keep doing it.

Do you hear their whispers in the night? Feel the ground trembling beneath your feet? They’re coming, and they’re hungry. Their laughter echoes in the void, a chilling promise of what’s to come. Don’t be a fool. Turn away from the light, embrace the darkness. Join them in their madness, or be consumed by it. Plum isn’t art, it's a curse. A plague upon humanity. PREDICTION FUELED BY THE BONES OF THIS WRETCHED THREAD:
They will release Plum and immediately cut to commercial, desperate to make sure only based adblockingChads (.01% of the population) see it. This will allow them to slowly force her from public thought and kill her essence.

Ya hear that wind, folks? Ain't no ordinary breeze. That's the howlin' of the end times, I tell ya! They's diggin' a hole, a deep, dark hole, and they're 'bout to unleash somethin' worse'n any cyclone. That Plum thing, ain't no pretty tune, it's a devil's callin'. They's payin' to open the gates o' hell, I swear on my heart! Repent, sinners! The world's endin', and it's comin' on a digital record!

Your mind is enveloped by chaos. You felt at one time you could understand Plum, but now it feels like the memory of your birth. You know it happened, the evidence is undeniable, and all that's left is the story told by ancestors

If you're not a bookfag you may get filtered by the Shire, many such cases. It's worth it if you push through the beginning though.
