I kind of hate 3's for calling it Collectopedia but not giving you anything to actually catalogue, and also because some of them were bugged for months.Also collecting materials on the field.2 > 3 > X > 1Every collection spot in 2 has a specific Field Skill associated with it. You can pile up three Field Skills like Mineralogy, Botany, Forestry, Agronomy, etc. to get tons of bonus materials, making it easier to farm certain item types. If I remember correctly, Torna made it even better. The only thing I don't like is that the Field Skill lines can't be skipped.1, X, and 3 are all generally the same "pick up glowing things scattered all over the area". 1 and X have the really cool benefit of the Collectopedia, but the actual act of collecting is better in 3 because approaching the thing makes it more clear what kind of item it will be, and there are more ways of getting items like enemies interacting with something. X and 1 are pretty much the same except you can collect more faster in X since you can drive a Skell.

Meanwhile, the engine itself and a lot of mechanics that were carried over from the original game felt rudimentary compared to 2. I think that when comparing 2 to base game 1, 2 is generally better at everything they do the same. Would be cool to see a full sized game with that kind of system.
