But if there are four protagonists then there isn't any kind of natural way to split them into two pairs and give each pair their own route. And splitting them up differently would lead to one pair getting more attention than another. For example, imagine giving each girl a partner that shares their role and gives them a shared route together. Like having the shy tomboy share a route with the tsundere tomboy while the cool tough dude gets a route with his sweet gentle bro who likes sports. Or maybe having one protagonist be a solo heroine where he goes on a journey and gains new friends along the way that become heroines too. But those options feel weird and artificial compared to splitting things evenly among the cast.

The way the anime portrayed Saber, Rin and Kotomine were all so much better than how they were in the VN. And then there's the ending which makes no sense. Just awful writing.
