This was alright, I guess the guy who recomended white knuckle like a fest or two would like this one in terms of megastructure exploration.
Main gimmick is that you have some parasite on you, other than that you can go grug with rocks on enemies.
Exploration is decent, you gain a double jump and the ability to grab onto fences, but I never knew how to trigger the "hook" objects ability.
Seems designed for KBM but for some reason steam rec's controller but the game didn't seem to work properly with a DS4.

Just finished the Homura Hime demo, it was okay but the audio felt very lackluster with a lot of things that looked like they should have had audio not having any (monsters yelling, certain player animations) and the dodge doesn't feel very good at all for how much they seem to want you to spam it for platforming and combat.

Really nice Hotline Miami clone with his own cool vibe.

A bit rough 2d platformer with rpg elements but it's charming.

Really neat mystery investigation game.
https://store.steampowered.com/app/2622820/Dobbel_Dungeon/
Turn-based tactic game with nice artstyle, wide skill trees and neat combat where you throw dices first and then think of strategies.
https://store.steampowered.com/app/3969600/The_Fable_Manga_Build_Roguelike_Demo/
Rougelike based on gangster manga where you build your own manga page. Buying only if it's on the cheaper side.

Really like how close it hit home with Gothic in term of game feel, but I'm the most not sure if they'll pull off a good game. Probably will wait with the purchase.

Candy Rangers was by FAR the most excited last year's Fall NextFest got me. It came out about 3 weeks ago and it has only 16 reviews, almost the same with Disaster Arms (25 reviews) which happened to come out a day earlier and sold in the same bundle. It's a shame since they're two of the best indies I've played this year. At least Gravity Circuit did well for itself.

TPS paranormal action game. Seems like you are a paranormal agent chasing satanic cultists who operate in a defiled church.
Best graphics in the fest. Not an annoying voice actress, good character model. The trailers show other costumes for her too.
Good artstyle, great cinematography and map design. Cluttered places that seem lived, tons of props. Beautiful lights. Lot's of round ass.
A decent amount of notes and things to investigate, boxes to open. Dialogue choices, cool super moves and effects, it's like a paranormal Matrix.
The handgun shooting is nice. Good monster design. It doesn't hold back in horror elements at all: body parts on the map props, bodies, butchered sliced bodies in glass boxes like an MRI scan, the child torture devices in my pic, with dead child bodies, body horror slimy stuff.

There is? Because she's a spirit or something? I figured she just disappeared for gameplay purposes so she wouldn't get in the way of the photos which is fine. You can photograph spirits, but only if they open up to your presence or are not repressed for some afterlife reason
It's very likely that the girl is related to the protagonist's mother or ex-wife and is a reflection of their trauma, or a spirit that has not been able to rest in peace.

Competently made but I think fundamentally unsalvageable. Musou doesn't work if you can't cleave through 95% of enemies at the baseline (which you can, that part is well done), but if you can then there's zero felt impact from any and all roguelike elements. The army customization elements also feel completely pointless as troops don't seem to actually do anything except give more imperceptible buffs and I guess boost the damage for special attacks that even when leaned into still deal less damage than basic light attack strings.
Also since you move pretty slow and the dodge has a cooldown it just becomes parry spam for everything that doesn't die in one hit and that got old before I even got through one run.

I found making most of the group spearmen was the right call since their attack just eviscerates crowds and helps stun/damage bigger enemies in the middle of them while I focus solely on the high priority targets; the Swordsmen command just helps divert aggro and the Archer command is kind of ass. I hope the other 4 playable characters outside of the demo are a little more interesting gameplay-wise but I do enjoy what's there even if I really fucking wish it had a linear level progression.

Not sure what to call this platformer but it's got some similarities to Pizza Tower with the whole combo thing and you can get some good momentum in it. Its a short demo with just two levels. Alright if your a big platformer guy.

This was ok. Maybe worth checking out again after they've worked out the kinks. Art direction is solid but the gunplay and level design is too basic. The Nemesis-type chasing guy looks cool but his AI is brain dead and forgets about you as soon as you go into a building.
Also really needs an FOV slider. I hate it when FPS games feel like I'm holding the gun against my cheek.

I mean I'd say the webm you're responding to kind of proves that untrue.
I was able to effortlessly live until I simply got bored by repeatedly spamming her thrust attack, break dance and big vines (all of which either beat the AI through attacking from to far or are invul)
I could even take time to taunt with no issue at all
Imo its very poorly balanced because enemies can parry or dodge mid-hit-stun and you have absolutely no mechanics to punish this, so trying to fight them properly just sees them go "nu uh" and literally walk out, but spamming aoes, invul and ranged attacks easily beats everything

It's what people want now sadly. Run-based roguelites with metaprogression that allow death to be part of progress and attrition/luck being rewarded as much as or more than mastery allows literally any gameplay format to become an addicting timesink for most people these days. Long linear games get dismissed by people who don't think they have the time for them while shorter linear (arcade) games get dismissed for being too hard to beat without practice. I don't hate the format inherently but a LOT of indie devs are seeing this trend and using it to give their simple polished gameplay a longer shelf life to that target demographic.

I'd say I wish more games went the SoR4 route and added a roguelite side mode after launch to a game that had crafted levels from the start, but GuardCrush went ahead and made a full roguelite beat-em-up right after so SoR4 Survival was seemingly just a testing bed. At the VERY least, I think Action Roguelites of all kinds should just do what Balatro does and allow you to see your run's seed and input it later to do it again or share the seed with others.

I hate this so much, there are always some fags that come out the woodwork and say "ahhh but I have le job, kids and wife I want to come home and just chill out" maybe try playing something else then motherfucker? instead of shitting up something that's clearly not meant for you

what annoys me the most is that this seems to be exclusive to video games for some reason, I didn't see crying to nowhere near this extent about Scorsese for making a 3 hour movie, people saying they don't have time for shows like BB or BCS, or for reading whatever books are currently respected nowadays, it seems like weirdly vidya has the most vocal faggotry when it comes to this stuff

I've been thinking about this a lot actually, how often time the "are le video games art?!" debate seems to always resurface every now and then, and I feel like that's in large part due to the way audiences engage with the medium, most vidya players just don't respect the medium, they always seem to treat it as a product first that must provide instant gratification to them, cater to their exact sensibilities, otherwise it's complete shit, I feel like with other mediums audiences give things a lot more leeway to be "artistic", express themselves in unique ways or whatever, while video games seem more "business" oriented at heart

>XOL: Space Mech War
Is a parody of gundam and you are a zaku pilot, for now there is no equivalent of an enemy gundam. It was fun, pretty simple, to the point,Enough weapons to not become boring with machinegun, charged shot, missile spread and big explosive rocket.

>revolgear ZERO
Is pretty simple, classic Shmup, I liked it. I like that it has a wide variety of shot-types and can use it them in howerever combination you want, missile barrage is kinda broken as I got a lot more points and the bosses get melted by the million rockets. The music was nice and upbeat and the graphics pretty enough, yeah is good.

>BIRDCAGE
Alright, this shmup is a bit more cimplicated and hard, you have a normal shot-type but you have a sword, sword deflects blue bullets and lock-on enemies and then you toss it as a weapon. I didn't play much because I could feel how rusty I am playing this kind of games and the red circle parts filtered me but I had fun. It felt very good.

>CiniCross
Is a Picross roguelite, I feel like it kind of defeats the reason of why someone would play a picross, I play that shit when I go to bed many times. When things get hard you are forged to click at random and guess or the timer will eat you out. Is a Picross, who cares? The presentation is nice at least.

Is a side_scroller with zombies that feel like a flash game from the old days, meaning, it wasn't very good. zombies can tank quite a bit and your knife will be your main weapon, I died to multiple shooting zombies, should have used a grenade. don't care.

>Death In Abyss
This shit is Devil Daggers and Descent had a bastard child, meaning that it was fun as hell, didn't beat the level but don't need to say this is good, it felt good to play, you move fast enough to dodge the big mouth coming at you and have enough tools to survive, from golden butterflies that give you a power up, unlimited boost, lock on missils you can spam while shooting and killing the strange structures around you kills the monsters close by but don't harm you. I recomend.

>Zako No Ahiru
Well, there is something strange in the control of the duck on this Get Over It, sometimes it slide strangely and sometimes I feel like it propulse in a strange way sometimes in some finniky places. overall, a good idea and for people who likes cute girls, I know I liked it but I doubt I'll ever play it personally.

well, I think I am done with this fest, kind of a shame I couln't play as much as I wanted because I got an ugly flu and had the energy to simple get grumpy in bed. I though this fest was alright and I didn't play any roguelike, no Death In Abyss doesn't count.

The game's competent but I don't really like the style.
I dunno shit abiut fightan games but I'll pretend that I do.
4 button game but it's more like SF and non-airdashers in terms of movement/magic series/EX gimmick
Most interesting thing about it is the Unique button being used for dodges, parries (frame perfect dodges) and a block counter move.
Cast is the typical shit (shoto, gaypler, zoner, balrog clone rushdown), but I guess the scythe guy is interesting because they have demon flips, teleports and an air swing move.
Funny how it has online available, it's not like anyone is playing that for the demo.
But it's kinda like, why wouldn't I just boot up fightcade or play the capcom collections? It doesn't really do anything crazy, but I don't hate how it plays at all, jus the aesthetic

Isometric Katamari but you're a Blob-like horror movie monster that grows when it eats people, and you try to fulfill a list of THPS-style objectives like dealing property damage, collecting things, or getting a humans-killed combo before police/army guys kill you. The UI is styled like it's a live news feed showing the world the destruction too. Great shit.

Repel the Rifts
Drill Rift

Only played Drill Rift so far, which is about a team of dwarves assigned to drill into a rift to bring back mythril ore. It's a resource management sort of game where every day you choose between drilling or maintaining your drill/expedition members while trying to fill a quota. Can't fill the quota in time and everyone gets executed. Drill too fast and you'll break the drill and lose. Push people too deep and they'll uncover eldritch abominations that will kill everyone. It's kind of fun, but a lot of the progression boils down to dice rolls which can make winning or losing feel more like a game of chance.

It's a pretty slow burn, but I ended up liking this one. There's a certain charming fetishism of Western life, and the translation is good.
You get to make Va11 Hall-A type choices about which brand you serve someone in your small shop to change dialogue routes, and the small locations work better than I expected from the screenshots. Very atmospheric if you just want to immerse yourself somewhere for a bit.

One of the few games that actually looked interesting to me. I want more Grimdark games. And it preferably not just being a souls like because they're trying to compete with From Software. Just like the Bloodborne/Yharnham kind of setting. Dark gothic settings in general like Van Helsing. So this works well being horror I suppose.

https://store.steampowered.com/app/3565680/DECRYPTO_Project/
On the surface it's a cryptography game where you decrypt files of various difficulty, but there's some meta puzzles to solve that were really unique and fun.
If the full game has more under-the-surface puzzles, I'll be very happy

https://store.steampowered.com/app/3817240/Heaven_Does_Not_Respond/
Solve puzzles related to a murder mystery on an early 2000s OS and internet.
Has more of a horror spin to it. Ends at an interesting point which I hope doesn't detract from the investigative experience in the full game.

What is not playing like shit?
Your basic attack has no hitstun
Your skills have no hitstun
You can dodge (inexplicably after the first boss) but it gives no reward while parry mostly or actually paints enemies which is how you pay for skills AND hp
So literally, what can you do different, exactly? Beyond dodge, which is objectively worse than the parry?

That was me! Two or three fests ago or so I made a couple of posts about White Knuckle in the threads. This was pretty awesome, cheers. Wishlisted for sure. Loved how many different nooks you could explore, even though the platforming was slightly janky.
In the end I made a wrong jump and the parasite tried to rescue me, only to slam me into the ceiling, causing me to fall, then repeating this infinitely lol
White Knucke and even Lorn's Lure a fest before it were more polished though.

Since this Next fest is coming to an end, how you feel about his one compared to previous next fests? did you enjoy most of the demos for this one and wishilist a lot of games or was it bad and you couldn't find anything inserting. Also were you able to finish all the demos you downloaded in time before it ends?
>>
I expected to like Olden Era so I wasn't exactly surprised when I did. But it still genuinely exceeded my expectations.
That is not to say I've got no gripes with it or that there aren't things I miss or wish were different or whatever. But I just kind of expected an above average entry. Like maybe in the top 60% percentile of the franchise or something. But instead I feel like this actually might have the potential to be a top contender. Granted that I realize it might be premature to say that after just a demo, but it exceeded my expectations still.

Beyond that I'm also very pleasantly surprised by the Alabaster Dawn demo.
I enjoyed CrossCode but I wasn't massively into it. And I recognize that the gameplay of this is very similar, but it still felt massively improved to me. Combat felt smoother and more engaging. Though I guess the setting also appeals to me more as well. I'm surprised by how engaged the demo got me even though I just expected it to be more CrossCode, which was not a game that managed to draw me in like that (though maybe that was in part because I never really cared much for its dotHack mmo setting.)

But these demos probably stand pretty firm as my most standout demo experiences even though they were already two of the most high profile ones.

I do really hope that the Placid Plastic Deck game ends up good. Seems like a really cool concept of a game with a strong presentation as well. But with how content light the demo was, even with the konami code extra, it just feels like it's difficult to say anything about the demo at all with conviction.

The June Next Fests are always the juicier and the ones that hoard the biggest amount of gems, to me this edition seemed like a completely average Fest, I found 3 good games and that is what I appreciate
Like many other people, I could sit and whine about the fact that there are 3000 units of juck sea, but that's not a problem when I looking only for the demos that seem interesting to me, I always download ~100 and the amount of crap and shovelware I come across is the usually expected.

I've played about 110 games and wishlisted 17 of them. Four additional ones I already had on my wishlist.
I followed a couple of games but didn't wishlist them.
Last winter I played nearly 230 games and added 38 to my wishlist. I'm on the deep end of Fest-enjoyers though for sure.
I have participated in every Fest and kept notes on everything I've played lol

I think a lot of devs are learning that Steam Next can't be in the middle of game development to drum up interest. In other cases too like what >>723660006 mentioned, there are demos with unique mechanics that are overlooked or had a twist which got mildly popular and then had their thunder stolen by other devs who can iterate and toss out stuff to get a product out to market faster when it is good enough which is unfortunate. AI also even if disclosed makes it even easier.
Devs are now rightfully prioritizing putting Steam Next as a last stop releasing a demo before releasing the game right before another Steam Next fest in the next 2-3 months to prevent people from waiting and losing interest or getting ideas stolen.

You have to know that most people are fucking retarded monkeys and if single thing is too powerful are completely incapable of just not doing thing and then will whine and bitch about thing eternally. Of course if thing is nerfed they will also whine and bitch about how everything is now impossible.

If you're not sure go post in the forums and ask if the dev will get rid of the demo

Will indie developers ever get talented enough for Thief-Likes and Splinter Cell Chaos Theory-likes? I ain't ever seen one.

Well I saw a failed attempt in 2023 for SC called Cloak & Dagger Shadow Operations. But never saw it attempted since unless you want to count 2D games like Intravenous. For Thief there's one game called Filcher. Anyone that says Gloomwood is dishonest.

The gigabytes are an honest complaint, it's no fun in the slightest when a dev makes you download the full build of his game so you can try only a tiny portion, or when they leaves you with the whole engine and its unusable trash taking up gorillions of storage
It's a matter of principle, if they can't optimize a demo, that incompetence carries over to the full game.

Too many survivors clones, metroidvanias, and isometric games. Too many games that look like low effort unreal engine asset flips with stock animations.
Nothing new I didn't already know about that really grabbed me, which is unusual for a next fest where I'll usually come away from them with at least 3 new games that I like so much I regularly check in on them before release. There was that one game called Beyond The Doors that's pretty cool where you set up modems like in Tunnet, but the fact that I almost forgot the name of it before making this post doesn't bode well for my long term interest.

Stuff that got demos that are day one purchases are things I knew I'd want before the next fest anyway like Alabaster Dawn, Escape From Ever After, Death in Abyss, and Shell Soldier.
All in all maybe I just didn't find the specific kind of games I was looking for but I really tried, I sorted by category and everything. I think the problem is me, I've already got way too many games I'm genuinely looking forward to right now to be interested in mid tier

I genuinely don't understand why most developers, AAA and indie alike, don't seem to get just how much limb based damage improves a game. I don't just mean in the RPG sense like in fallout or in the horror sense like how in dead space you blow off limbs, I mean stuff where enemies have a tangible reaction or gameplay purpose to being shot anywhere other than the head. we had this shit in goldeneye 64/perfect dark running on hardware that's like 100x less powerful than what we have today, this adds so much to combat flow and atmosphere assuming it's a game that is reasonably medium to slow paced. In resident evil 4 kneecapping a ganado then suplexing them was fun as fuck and stuff like that lets you juggle enemies.

being able to mess up an enemy's aim by shooting their arms was awesome in metal arms and MGS3

For me the importance of limb based damage has always been less about the indulgence in violence but more a matter of
>A: Atmosphere. It doesn't feel like you're shooting fake guns which enhances immersion.
>B: Tactical options, if you're in a room full of enemies, stunlocking enemies with bullets can give you time to reposition or juggle them
>C: Weapon feedback, You're holding guns that have actual stopping power to them, making them feel better to fire in terms of pavlovian feedback, which makes the whole game more memorable to play. The VK-12 shotgun in F.E.A.R. cuts motherfuckers in half at point blank range and causes them to stop firing at you sometimes if it doesn't outright kill them.
It's a good touch that may not be mandatory for a game to be good but you notice when it's not there.

RTS base-builder where you gather up resources to build tanks to destroy the local flora before it spreads and wipes you out. Found it pretty fun despite never really playing an RTS before. it's stalker in setting alone really. the game plays like any other scavenging survival crafting crap where you go out to collect junk from locations that reset every couple of days to build up your base for your roguelike "run", but with painfully limited inventory space, scarce resources in the world (made worse that the recipes to craft things are expensive), and low health. It's challenging but not in a fun or fair feeling kind of way, just tedious.
Despite the store pages screenshots showing somewhat cool possible location generations, 95% of the places you'll see are identical fields, woods, and ramshackle villages that get really repetitive really fast.

It's even worse than that because you only get about five minutes of daylight before you have to bolt back to your bunker. So despite the trailer and Stalker-like setting making it seem like you'd be carefully exploring a lot and looking under every rock you actually are forced to speed through everything like a spastic, and even then it's so RNG heavy you usually don't even find anything of note within that strict time limit.

Devs use whatever tags they want and players often add theirs, anything that even remotely resembles the game, and blatantly misusing every other tag. Technically you can report the misused tags, but that doesn't do anything unless many others report it, too.
Like, I'm now looking at a match-3 game that has tags: strategy, real-time strategy, turn-based strategy, turn-based, solitaire, choices matter, and both roguelike and roguelite, and roguelike deckbuilder.
