But a lot of it is locked behind hours of talking to people. I will add though that the part of the game you're in (base ARR aka 2.0) is heavier on text only sections than the rest of the game. So even though the story is always a heavy part of the game, it gets broken up more by more interesting battle content and actual voiced cutscenes later on. ARR is considered the great filter for a reason, but is essential to set up the world and the WoL's starting point.

You have to do the MSQ before you can do real content together, and that takes a very, very, long time. Probably on the order of 300~ hours. You can still hang out and do trivial content or rp stuff if that's what you're there for.
