it's actually a cryptic reference to crusader kings where blood relatives have a little blood drop on the family tree because their next game is actually Medieval 3 and will have family trees and politics with the same depth as Crusader Kings 2

either that or it's just using a blood drop to signal blood relatives, the jury is still out there

Indicates blood relatives. It's funny going into Egypt and seeing the blood symbols under Seti and Tausret, who are married. Just Egypt things. In gameplay terms it affects whether your heir can inherit legitimately or not. If you set someone who's not a blood relative as your heir it will cause legitimacy issues when they come to power.

>Is the problem the 3d map?
The problem is mostly that it's very hard for fun battles to occur. Like anon said, part of the reason why he likes the old world map is because it has way more empty space. Everything is going to be a siege or a town battle. While just removing town battles and making them regular battles would improve matters, it's still not a actual fix of the core issue. Which is that the game just doesn't encourage any other strategy besides rushing for the next town.

>>
>>487616003
Dwemers are inspired visually by Mesopotamians. However, if you read between the lines you realize their true inspiration is actually US! As in, they are basically a modern information age society stuck in a fantasy world.

>There's no castle. I assume M1/S1 limited castle sieges to very important provinces
Nah that's solely because there hasn't been a fort constructed in that province, rebels don't build anything iirc.
Sieges happen in all the regions where castles(fortifications) are build up which the motte and bailey icon signifies.

Basically people were annoyed with Pharaoh and Troy for just not being a Bronze Age game and instead focusing on smaller regions. So, now they basically made a Immortal Empire map for both games.
>>
>>487616831
Kind of, if you want mythical units you still have to play Troy. Pharaoh does make the "historical" mode of Troy completely obsolete, though.
>>
>>487616831
I guess Troy has the mythos stuff.
>>
>>487616545
Maybe? What I forgot was that armies in the same province but outside the castle would still trigger field battle. I think there were no garrison units so an undefended castle would quickly fall. God it has been ages since I last played MTW.
The interaction is inherently a bit different on a 3d map.

At least in WH3 part of the issue for me is AI behavior and the combination of movement range and settlement density. Most of the time it feels like your hopping from 1 settlement to the next and the AI prefers to just wait inside which leads to tons of sieges.
>>
>>487616831
Histoids rejected mythos units. Pharaoh was a response to player feedback about Troy. They changed everything people cried about.

I'm at like turn 15 as Suppiluliuma and this doesn't seem like an issue. Lethality is pretty crazy if you don't pay attention, a an enemy unit of javelins can rake up a lot of kills before you know it, but I just use militia meatshields and keep my kingly unit behind. The family tree is kind of whatever, I only got a couple sons in the past 3 turns so I can't do too much. Cavalry isn't common enough to be an issue. Only the assyrians and cimmerians, who I bitchslapped into vassalage, have cavalry and they weren't that bad.

With the number of chinks in existence, if you made a program that shows a "You win!" message as soon as it starts and does nothing else, it would still have more players than Pharaoh and quite a few other proper titles.
This is a problem that has not been solved yet.
>>
>>487621161
make sure to read the resource buildings because some of them are huge upgrades as you level them while others are worthless so its not worth going past tier 1
you cannot build even half the buildings available so specialize on resources or unit recruitment

Trying to figure out what the best defensive outpost would be. Does this building really have a 30% chance of adding to the provincial garrison every turn? Or am I misunderstanding? It seems like that would just balloon to insane garrisons later in the campaign if that were the case.
>>
>>487626207
Generally if you have missile superiority you'd soften them up first, but that doesn't appear to be an option in your case. They mostly have trash infantry, and it's spears only. If you get your sword, axe and club infantry on the walls ASAP they should do well.

Probably the models and skellymans. Not the skellyman units, the skellyman animation skeletons.

Hm yeah, the rigging's fucked. I don't think it was this bad back in troy but I am trying it in Tweak and the body with shorter leg models (IE the thighs are cut) are too far cut down below. That's hopefully something to fix patch wise because the skirt isn't bending the way it should. And I see the tabard bit janking out when he moves.

Depends on the minor faction. Some are basically just the main faction but with less units, but some are interesting because they pull from two rosters (Alashiya), have completely unique units (Rhesus), or have a unique faction leader (Achilles, Odysseus, etc).

Not all troy armor is - aeginian runners is fine, aeneas dardanian swords is fine, the dendra panoplies are fucked, pic related is right on the armor but wrong on the skirt. When I tried looking at some Pharaoh models I think they may ahve introduced some new bones, and so the updating along borked it.

So something peculiar happened. I loaded troy_achaean_Spearmen and the issue is gone.

If I assign phar_can_gen_generic_body_04_shoulderhips then it works fine
If I assign troy_man_generic_body_11_shoulderhips it works fine

I believe the issue is whether the unit uses humanoid01s (Pharaoh) or humanoid01 (Troy) skeletons. I need to boot up the game and see what units are having the issue.

What unit did you use dude? Because I'm testing it ingame and there's no problem. That said, I owe you a favor because this is good to know going forward for modding. Basically I don't think certain troy gear will be compatible on a pharaoh skeleton. That said, in Tweak pharaoh bodies also worked with this gear, so unless a pharaoh skeleton is tied to a specific animation it should be fine. But I wanna look up your unit, which was giving you clipping?

Also
>There's a phalanx advance option, not just advance regular
>It uses an animation (I Think just 'combat advance' I'd
O fugg. I did testing earlier and I finally figured out how to replace the default combat animation so while an overhand is not really possible And the Chigi vase is depicting javelin throwing in all likelihood I can get a cooler high-spear stance like the high elves in WH2 (Not the exact same, can't reuse animations) for the phalanx unit.

I've wanted a real autism-sink modding adventure and things keep falling in my favor for that.

Gotcha. In the VMDs I do see phar_map_bodyguard_ach_unit_spear_medium_average (or large or small). So that's probably it.

In the tweak it doesn't let me load his animations. But he's listed as humanoid01, so it should be working.

I'll test that in a sec, but I think some things are just scuffed. I was checking to see if I could get it in a custom battle. Generic mycenaean lord, club weapon. His bodyguard all use dendra armor, that's fine. They all have the same face with a big ass nose - that's okay...they all use assyrian helmets. Every single one.

That doesn't seem right.

I think it's better, pharaoh doesn't have money instead it has food/stone/wood/bronze/gold and each settlement usually only produces one or two resources so you're really encouraged to specialise your provinces to maximise output
>if possible I would rather have fewer but well managed cities compared to just expanding endlessly
consider Babylon, other Mesopotamians are also seem good at playing tall but Babylon is specifically singled out as the tall faction
also in Pharaoh you win by collecting victory points, which you can do with aggressive expansion but having allies and building wonders also count, I haven't won yet in dynasties but you should for example be able to win a campaign without conquering outside your culture's "sacred lands", so you could win as Babylon without expanding outside Mesopotamia for example

So >>487651126 with someone saying here if the game is received well they'd reconsider, but I'd say no it's a firm no. Now if it does gangbusters wtfbbq then they'll reconsider, but let's assume it's a no for now. As to what to add, you can see from gear added what they likely considered:
>Ara_ (Arab) have stuff
You know them. I don't know what their shit was, they kind of really perk up more in the early iron age. Camels, obviously.
>Ara_ (Aramaeans) have stuff
These Semitic guys are weird because they never had any huge kingdoms, save Aram-Damascus, yet Aramaic ultimately became the lingua franca of the middle east until Arabic took over (Greek would take over a little but as an upper class thing). It's more that anyone conquering up lots of territory ended up with lots of aramaeans and so had to speak the language. Flighty and skirmishy.
>Ura_ (Urartu) has stuff.
Urartu was around lake van (Nariri or whatever ingame), came around in the 800s. Again, this with the arabs and arameans REALLY suggests they wanted to do a 700s era campaign but the DLC got cancelled. These guys were basically Assyria of the mountains, they had lance/melee cavalry.
>Cim_ (cimmerians)
Obviously proto-scythians.
>Ash and whatever for Babylon

>free update makes new people realize how good the Sofia team is at making a tight, cohesive game that isn't a fucking mess of features like warhams or even older historical titles like rome 2
Feels good man. Hope they give them a proper historical mainline release next time instead of this wishy washy pseudo "eras" shit. Even if they insist this isn't Eras, it's obvious the game would have released like dynasties if it had seriously been considered it a full title.
>>
>>487653904
Unfortunate, hope they go back to add content like Rome 2 but I doubt it.
>>
>>487660537
Funnily enough Sofia was the one that saved Rome 2 with Empire Divided/Rise of the Republic and the family tree.
>>
>>487635495
No, it's a different experience. I think most people that claim this haven't actually played Troy.
It's a lot more narrative and "team" focused and has some nice nods and tidbits related to the homer lore of you're into that (you should). Some of the unique faction mechanics are really neat and campaigns like panthesilea's feel very fresh, even if some of her mechanics were pasted onto sea peoples. It's a shame they didn't add minor nomadic factions.
>>
>>487660050
You'd need to find the DB table to increase the protectiveness of bronze/silver/gold(?) shields. And probably adjust the variable for chance of hit overall. IF you are interested in trying to do this I can teach you.

>>487660849
What devs say is always predicated on sales or future events, so things can always change. I'd not 'hope' for it or expect it to happen but I mean who expected dynasties to come out after Pharaoh? One thing I wish is for Attila they (CA) released a DLC for the assembly kit that allows you to edit the map. Or more accurately, it had files that the LOTR mod guys figured out how to make the map editable. Currently Pharaoh does not have that. I am not sure I could learn myself how to edit it as the LOTR guys did -if- it were possible, but the terrain in the east makes me wish we had just a little bit more settlements there for the Zagros and Caucasus. Or failing that that we could add them ourselves. It's not so necessary for the bronze age, but it's that "if we just had a little bit more it'd be even better"

>>487660537
If the mainline CA is working on 40k (or star wars), I'd be happy with Sophia doing Medieval 3, they clearly have the skill to do so.

>>
>>487658868
>>487658963

>>487660893
I mean, I honestly wouldn't say they "saved" it, they did what they could with the piece of shit they were given, that's for sure. RoR is pretty good though, you're right , but the base game just feels incredibly dumbed down but also incoherent, including the stuff they added later, like the family tree.

A good example of what I'm talking about is the diplomatic missions in Rome 2. They are completly disconnected from actually diplomacy, and from what I can remember, it's not like any character has a better chance of pulling off than any other character. It's completly random. The family tree barely has anything to do with the political stuff, it's like a bunch of self contained minigsmes that don't affect anything else.

Troy and Pharaoh are completly different in this regard, even if they also like to have this "compartmentalized" way of adding features like the legacy paths or whatever they are called.
>>
>>487664141
Which faction has the best archers?
>>
>>487664105
Depends on what unit is attacking you, different weapons have different lethality chances. Spears, for instance, have low lethality.
>>
>>487664105
it means every rock, arrow and javelin coming your way is way more likely to kill units. my archers feel like they have MG42's when I flank a unit stuck in melee now
>>
>>487664287
Amenmesse's have the best range.
>>
>>487661608
If I'm being honest, I think the game was going to reach this state, with the Aegean and mesopotamia added, at one point or another, but they were probably going to be DLC as a sort of map expansion or just straight up faction dlcs, but then the hyenas shit happened and also the Warhammer DLC debacle, and they happened to use this as a PR manouvering and regain trust.

Essentially histchads are getting free shit because the main team and hyenas team shat the bed.

>>487664129
you can't in older games where it was supposedly so popular that they added it to the new one
>>
>>487664091
Ah yes, that adds up nicely. Well that kinda makes me want to play Greenskins now. I've only had experience campaigning with Wurrzag while my buddy played Grom, and i felt we were very honorable orcs on our righteous journeys to get my shit back from some bitch ass mothafuckas and then go get my buddy some grub... Wow now this is really painting a clear picture. I'm gonna have to make an active effort in all my future campaigns to remove all Orcs. Can't trust the Goblins either, especially the ones that put their big hook noses on their flag.
>>
>>487663382
It's the opposite for me, characters are cool but I'm more of an emergent stories kind of guy, it's a shame CA never adds enough variation to generic characters. It was especially bad in 3k where family stuff was at its best. I also loved the espionage mechanic in that game, I wish they bring it back someday.

And also, the fact that you CAN lose a character you've built up adds a tension that makes you actually care about it.
>>
>>487664141
To each their own. The diplomatic missions are basically useless and I never used them but I found the family tree actions to be pretty valuable in manipulating the politics system, which while simple is also fun enough. Sometimes I like Total War games that have comparatively simple campaign level mechanics that are consistent across factions so I can focus on smashing guys into each other. Rome 2 also has things I really miss in Pharaoh, like the battle maps being generated from terrain.
>>
>>487664648
Yeah, because you're playing an entire empire in a campaign that lasts hundreds of years. You're not just building up a character, you're building up a family and setting up your kids to be even better than their parents. Stick to your le epic marvel heroes game bud.

If your son is winning battles and staying in cities with cultural buildings he's not going to be getting more than at most a couple bad RNG traits. Still, having only daughters or getting a shit son could still be entertaining because sometimes it's fun to turn around a terrible character or keep the empire together regardless of its shit leader. We get it, you just want to watch numbers go up rather than roleplay, Warhammer is definitely for you.

Been playing dynasties on and off for like 12 hours now. 8.5 hours record. Playing as Suppiluliuma on hard difficulty and I really like it. I have 100+ hours and several campaigns of experience in Pharaoh so I'm already familiar with a lot of it. The lethality system is good and makes battles feel better. Last samurai'ing enemy leaders with a hail of javelins or employing axemen to charge the rear feels even better now. The family tree and deed system adds a sense of immersion which I appreciate coming from warhammer. The added scale of the campaign with new factions is also very nice and I'm eager to traverse more of it. Right now I'm still mostly focused on Hatti and am fighting a civil war against my ex-vassal who had 100+ legitimacy by like turn 30. That's my tiny review and campaign post before I feel asleep. Glory to Hatti.

Babylon is fucking fun. They remind me of Oda in Shogun 2 where you have lots of cheap slave units to take the brunt for a small elite fist of super soldiers. Babylonian Sappers are fucking OP, guys, I swear. They're like Malazan Marines from Book of the Fallen, except instead of grenades they chuck spears that kill everything instead. Fucking great dudes.

If you think this is a nerf you're crazy. It's like 80% chance to ignore evasion but you deal 80 magic damage when it happens even against targets without evasion so it's a huge DPS item on a hero with lots of attack speed. Windranger for example.
It's no longer just an item that counters evasion, it's also genuinely good on its own.

According to excavated Hittite records it was a vassal of the Hittite kingdom(called by them Wilusa) that got besieged by someone but it wasn't a epic battle and Hittites sent reinforcements that broke the siege. In fact many scholars believe that the Iliad is a amalgamation of Hittite legends as the actions of Hector in the Iliad directly correspond to Hittite legends about a unrelated prince.

>Why do history games keep flopping?
Because CA forgot what made people like total war in the first place.
Power fantasies. People got off on conquering the world. This is what every historical total war has been about until Attila. Simple conquest with some minor campaign management mechanics slapped onto it. Around Attila CA decided conquest should be toned down and the game should be a management sim. The gameplay loop was ruined.
Warhammer succeeds due to rocking battles and map painting. Simple as.

look I'm just not interested in total war games that don't have cannons. and don't talk to me about being filtered when 90% of this thread can't even figure out how to position their gun units so they can actually shoot. they're not bugged. you put them behind a fucking hill.

EU is played not because of it being set in the renaissance but because they can play their irrelevant shithole nations when they were semi-relevant. That's why bronze age is cited as a unpopular setting. Because it doesn't foster nationalist retards.

Anecdotal, but my younger brother only plays 2 games on PC. Football manager (1000+ hours) and Napoleon (500 hours). He refuses to touch any other Total War game.
What would you label this group of people?

Their units are complete shit. Only the tier V units are worth anything.

So in that case a renaissance total war would do well since every single European nationalist + Turks will be able to live out their power fantasies.

Empire is very busted as a game, unfortunately. I think an Empire 2 would be pretty popular just on the basis of the game not being fundamentally broken and having a better/bigger map that represents global empires better.

what's so broken about it? the only real problems I ran into is town wealth not growing like it's supposed to and occasionally units on the battle map would bug out and become untargetable.

Hebrews.
Well it's more complicated than that but the roots are in the old testament.
Ba'al in Hebrew basically simply meant lotd and could be applied to many gods.
Afaik in the old testament Ba'al was mainly used for the Canaanite equivalent to Hadad and primarily to depict him as a weak and false god.
One of the other uses is with Baʿal zəvu (Beelzebub) which in christian theology was considered synonymous with the devil. I think Islam has a similar interpretation.
So when ever you needed to depict evil you could just use Baal as stand in for the devil if you wanted an alternative depiction.

This is one and this same. Historical studies are one of the few Humanities studies that are always majority right wing and male dominated, explicitly for this reason.

>not popular
The game is an absolutely broken mess that barely works half the time. It's still more popular than most total wars that came out since. Rome 2 has the more popular setting, 3 Chinks has the Chinamen playing it while Shogun 2 was given away for free and got a recent spike thanks to the show Shogun.
All other games that came out since like Napoleon, Attila, ToB, Troy or Pharaoh are less popular than Empire despite being mechanically much better games.

That's not how you use reviews
User reviews are used to indicate how playerbase feels. If they are mediocre (mostly positive on steam) it means that situation is ok. If they are bad (mixed and below) it means that developer pissed off playerbase for some reason. It may be (and often is) completely unrelated to the quality of a game. If they are overwhelmingly positive it means that playerbase is euphoric for some reason, likely developer did something to really please them and suck them off. User reviews are basically a drama detector and that's it.

Journalists reviews are utterly worthless. Every single one of them is a shill, they have no expertise in game, series or even genre they usually review and have no time to properly play the game.

Indepth reviews by autists who are obsessed with particular genre or series are the only ones of value. They are usually long and you are probably better off doing something rather than watching them

Ultimately reviews aren't even needed anymore. You don't even need to play the game (or watch the movie for that matter) to know whether something will be good or bad nowadays. Everything is explained and showcased looooong before release. Nothing is surprising anymore. Often it's enough to even watch a nongameplay cinematic trailer and see developers name to know what you will be getting. Total War has a good example of this actually with 3chinkdoms trailer. It was obvious for anyone nonretarded that game will have singular hero units from cinematic alone and thanks to this you could discard or get interested in the game. SM2 is also a good example, because obviously will be a one point better game than original, while still being generic 3rd person action game with cinematic cutscenes you can beat in 10 hours, then fuck around for like 10 hours in pvp/coop after which you forget about it and uninstall
Frankly I don't know how can even people get hyped about something anymore, when everything is so obvious nowadays.
>>
>>487695276
It's also why historical studies never amounts to anything. You need actual sensible non nationalist readings to learn anything from history.

Shogun 2 is absolutely what pike & shot would look like if made for a total war game.
Every European faction would field stacks of basic pikemen and hangunners. Rodoleros, two-handed swordsmen, grenadiers, cavalry and so forth would be specialized troops tied to buildings like all the samurai variants in S2. This only applies to the western Euros of course. Ottomans, Poland, Russia, Persians, Indians, Berbers and China if the map goes far enough east will be using completely different rosters and tactics.

Why even bother pretending this matters? You will never see 20 years pass in Pharaoh and have a child grow from baby to man and assume leadership over your dynasty when the family head dies; you'll just adopt a random general because he'll still be a child when you get killed off in battle or die from random old age, unless you have an adult heir at the game start.
