Had an epiphany: agdg devs aren't interested in each other's games, but they might be interested in similar inspirations and influences? What if instead of talking about your own games, you talked about the games that inspired you and the things you're trying to build upon??
>>
>>488640091
My game is unlike any other. There's a lot of games that are near and dear to my heart but I'm definitely not trying to build on them

After a couple of contrived and non-functional implementations, I got my dodge working properly.
I added a big block of math to my dash action, so now it gets the player's input directly without relying on finding which direction the character actor is facing, and dodges in that direction 100% of the time. Previously, it misbehaved if you turned too quickly.
Next, I need to set the character to actually face that direction when there's a dodge input, because the turning rate can't actually keep up with frame one dodges.
>>488640091
No one cares, man. I can come in here and say
>my game is all my favorite parts of my favorite fromsoft action games and none of the parts I don't like
and list off Sekiro, Bloodborne, Demon's Souls yadda yadda, but that doesn't actually add anything to the conversation besides letting everyone know I'm a raging ideaguy.
My progress might be meager, but at least I'm posting in and making a little bit every day.
I've already gotten some extremely good feedback from posting little bites of progress, like putting my turn speed variable in my animation BP since it's already ticking, rather than putting it on my character.
Such things would be ideal to bring up when you actually have something to show for in those areas you're trying to build upon.

Handles slopes and falling because it inherits the character's vertical momentum, and will always go in the direction you want it to regardless of the direction it's facing.
Still need an animation, and to set the character's forward direction as it gets input. Once I do that, it might be simpler to go back to a mix of the old implementation by just figuring where the actor is facing.
I did this without looking anything up so I'm a little proud.

I'm thinking about it and Jon Blow is starting to grow on me.
When I compare him to other devs like the Pirate Software guy, despite Jon's schizophrenia and weirdness, he feels so much more relatable, even if his gamedev decisions could've been fixed if he just posted in /agdg/ and listened.
When Jon says shit, it feels like he's being honest. I understand it. Not like that snake.

Jon makes his money from gamedev but the other guys make money from youtube tutorials or twitch streaming. Jon is an actual gamedev and not a corpodev either, he's just an indiedev. That's why we post about developers like Jon and Eric, they're actually like us.

How do i make an ocean that stretches toward the horizon?

stretching a textured polygon infinitely far away seems retarded.

a 2d projection going from the horizon to the bottom of the screen wont be in 3d space.

I like how DCSS has enemies that are noticeably strong or weaker vs certain builds, abilities, and defensive stats.
i like how gmod zombie survival encourages and adds depth to kiting and resource management by greatly tightening access to healing, and time-gating access to ammo.

Man I run into that shit so much and it's infuriating. Hardest part of learning gamedev is that there's no real comprehensive "everything you need to know before you can learn on your own" guide, so you end up trying to find solutions to things without having the slightest clue what a solution might look like. Tons of useful information out there but it can be near impossible to dig up if you aren't already halfway to knowing the answer.

After way too much UI work I finally got the full world-creation system in. You fill the boxes with symbols that determine the features, then open the portals to the world. Each symbol can have different intensity levels which increases the amount of things being spawned, or the magnitude of effects such as Radioactive Sun.

Any unfilled cell is filled with a random already discovered symbol, so if you want a fully random planet you just open it without adding any symbols. I'll probably add some limits to this so you have more of an incentive to actually use the symbols. This also means that bigger boards create "fuller" worlds, as a tiny 1x1x1 box only has space for a single feature.
You find new symbols and boards as loot around the worlds, and I'll make it so that you have to go through a certain tech tree progression where rarer symbols can only be found if the world uses a certain parent symbol, or any other limitations and interesting interactions I can think of.

I can run most of the generation in the background before even entering the portals but there's still plenty of optimization to be had, and I have to deal with weirdness like filling an entire 3x3x3 box with Pine Tree symbols creating a ridiculous, untraversable amount of trees. This will be an insane amount of work to balance and fix but insanity is the spice of life.
It also happens to be the 4th week of this milestone that is now CONCLUDED and I should be writing up a little devlog later telling my overall thoughts.

Any symbol ideas? Weather, enemies, screen effects, hazards, textures, heightmaps, anything goes.
>>
>>488645630
Absolutely disgusting. I refuse to buy any game that does that and will tell all my friends not to buy such a game.
>>
>>488645580
If your card was chugging I would have looked into a frame debugger or booted up renderdoc to check out what nonsense was going on. A long faraway quad doesn't really do anything different from a small close one.
>>
It feels like 3D games nowadays don't really have an art style anymore. It's either photorealism or that sort of very-slightly-cartoonish photorealism that shit like Overwatch does. Very same-y and bland, even down to things like menu design. Can't remember the last time I saw a game that really stood out in any way other than copying a specific older game's style.

You couldn't make De Blob 2 in today's market, that's for sure.

Games I played as a kid: Diablo, Doom, Warcraft, Heroes 3, Metal Slug.
Kids never play games aimed at kids unless it's the only thing their parents get them. The closest thing you'll get for a "game for kids" is games that emulate the experience of children hanging in the playground together, like Roblox, Minecraft, Fortnite and whatnot, since this generation lost that aspect of their childhood.
Wait are you the boogers games for children schizo? Ewww.

I want to make the visual style of my game to be like these retro fantasy media. I know it is very common trope, especially since the "dark fantasy" trend, but I've never seen anyone from modern decades actually pulling this off correctly. Maybe except for DS1 and some Berserk game adaptations. People always try to mimic this style, but it seems like they never fully commit to it.
>>
How did you get the art assets for your game? Did you buy them, use free assets, or make them yourself?

If you make them, what art style do you use and how long did it take you to git gud?

If you use free assets, how do you harmonize the different asset styles?

I have no art skillz bros. Tried pixel art, but the cap is too high for good art. Low poly is the only other option, but it'd take awhile to git gud. How do u cope with being a trash artist?

Here's a lifehack, never tell it to anybody else.
Make a fake "gamedev studio", make a website for it and start making job offer posts on linkedin or find people manually on artstation or behance. Aim for someone young, preferably under 18(they don't have to pay bills to live and it won't hurt them to draw for experience). Tell them that you offer them a "remote internship" and just task them with art for your game. You can "hire" a few of them. The most important thing is to specify in the internship paper that you will own all commercial and creative right for the work they will do.
>>
>>488654082
p.s.
The only way you can face problems with it is if your game actually gonna make it, but at this point, just pay them like 1-2k and they will shut up.

He didn't do enough then, because he didn't make a horror game. He also said he's not doing porn because he can't get an artist, even though porn can pay for its own art.
Granted, it's debatable whether doing a porn game is good profit or not. There are success stories of people making it with terrible games that people fund anyway but it's unlikely to become the same level of smash hit as certain other games, and wouldn't mesh well with youtubing/streaming. There are some devs that make more money than porn games just by doing youtubing/streaming about games.

I use simple colors and shapes, or geometric patterns. I use illustrator to make sprites if I don't draw them in game with the shapes asset. There are a few characters I have to draw. I only do art out of necessity over the years. I also chose games that I could do with no art skills specifically. If you want to flip assets, there are things like the sisyphus game and only up too which don't really harmonize the assets, they just choose a game where it doesn't matter

>controllerless full-body motion-tracking haptic suits
This is already obsolete. All you'd be getting from it is the haptic feedback, which isn't enough to justify putting on an entire suit to experience. VR will move towards Kinect-esque video tracking instead.
>>
>>488667550
I think most people can't be arsed to move on their own so something like motion controls for hands and thumbsticks for movement might be what works
>>
>>488668089
kinect video tracking already exists and no one does shit with it except shovelware, the reason VR is useless is that it isn't immersive enough to deal with the hassle compared to just a controller and screen. the only way it's getting off the ground is full immersion.

Started my Godot orblike, got the player moving and colliding, and I set up an orthographic camera that tracks the player because I want to use prerendered sprites and let the 3d handle the y-sorting.
Where do you go next? Attacking?
Right now I'm using move&slide, but I don't want the player to slip around stuff. Is there an alternative that makes collisions 'sticky'?
For example, if an enemy blocks a doorway, move and slide will have the player squeeze by like they are covered in olive oil. I want them to simply be unable to pass

Yeah I think those are literally the first graphics I made when I started the project, and I'm so close to it that I just don't see them anymore. But its something that comes up very often, I really need to find someone to commission better looking tiles, cause you're looking at them 90% of the time, they should look much better.

>>488678135
IDK a year or so back, when I created the demo for Steamfest. I did no shilling whatsoever, I was thinking of doing a soft launch and maybe getting some cheap advertisement once the game is up, but I'm not aiming for a big release. I just want a small number of dedicated players to play the game, give feedback, and let me know about bugs and stuff.

Steamworks is so dogshit, I've been trying to find my wishlist count for 10 minutes now and cant find it, sorry.

How long has it been in development? That page has been up since 2022 from what I saw online. Idk how Steam would react to recycling a steam id with a new game or if theyll have you buy a new one. Since idk how theyll respond to a name change where the entire game clearly is different from what was originally intended but hefore you release anything eg gauging the interest via no releases but rather demos and wishlists/followers.

The other is yet another steamworks page that demands you sign in evem if youre already signed in on another steamworks "page" its like the system is very separated. This page shows the imho the accurate wishlist count or at least close to it.

it's more like decals, like the decal node in Godot that lets me paint a texture on a mesh, but I know there is something exactly like that on Blender. Basically I don't want a fucking 16K texture on a ground mesh just to paint details on specific areas. And I don't want to do pic related
>>
>>488678837
Not sure I understand what you're saying here. I didn't change the name of my game, it's exactly the same idea as in 2022, just more content.
>>488678728
Yeah I'm tired of it as well to be honest. I started work on this in 2020(!), though only a couple of hours here and there, and at that time I was really more into the genre. Hence why I kinda just wanna say the game is "done & released" and move on to something else, unless by some miracle people see the game and actually like it, in which case I'll dedicate more time into creating the 1.0 version
>>488678561
By pic related you mean generating a random sequence of nodes or whatever? It wasn't too bad honestly, I haven't looked at that code in a while, but it boils down to
1. Define a 2d array for the max size of your node map (e.g. 15x5 I think in my case)
2. Define a drop table for each type of node, e.g. battle node -> 50%, shop -> 10%, etc.
3. Define some global rules, like 1st node must be of this type, you can never have 2 shops in a row, etc.

Then once that's done, iterate over the whole array, choose a node at random based on drop table / global rules. Then iterate again and add some connections.

>>488679292
I think I found it. I only have 341 wishlists, oh well.
>>
>>488657046
>>488675782
LS dev here. Actual pathfinding is unfortunately really intensive in Game Maker, and the way it's set up it has to essentially generate a terrain grid of the entire room for every object added/deleted. So with destroyable walls it's basically impossible to keep optimized if you have dozens of enemies and hundreds of objects. Instead I have them use mp_step functions when they're near to buildings so they can scoot around them and find the player's last known position. For Brigador I think they just had a different play style in mind - the enemies move really slowly and I don't think there was a major need for "true" pathfinding.
>>
I think more and more anons here are under 100 wishlists which is rather surprising. Why are we all near the same amounts anyways?
>>
>>488678795
You’re not supposed to release with less than 7000 wishlists
>>
>>488679565
>Not sure I understand what you're saying here
Sorry I rambled without making it clear after the first sentence. I meant if you gauged interest via demos on steam. If reception is poor you simply scrap the whole page. Change name and put a new game. You save $100. But the amount of effort to change this isn't worth $100 imho. Your intent is to gauge interest and if poor you simply finish it asap/drop it, right?

In any case when I changed my games name it was a hassle going through every single page to change the name of my game. It wasnt just changing it so its visually this name but all these other depots and whatnot that required it all while being obtusely difficult to locate.
>>
>>488679858
I have about 200 wishlists, but only like 15 sales.
>>
>>488679858
Bad games get few wishlists, especially the 2d pixel art style everyone here is making. You guys cherry pick the 1 in a million 2d pixel art game that sells well to normies and use that as justification, but 99% of the time 3D anything outsells 2D everything. Harsh reality
>>
>>488679858
A lot of developers here (I would say around 90%) place too much focus on how memeable their game is while completely overlooking how much quality and substance their game has. A marketable game needs both
>>
>>488679858
most anons either do not know how to market games or do not bother
which is a shame since it isn't difficult, it's just busy work. dedicating months or years to a project only to not bother with the last crucial step is painful to witness
>>

>I really need to find someone to commission better looking tiles, cause you're looking at them 90% of the time, they should look much better.

That can wait.
In the meantime grab some random RPGMaker tileset and half-ass some HoMM1-tier background, it will already be a massive improvement (with your blue/red map very thinly overlayed on that).
The scrolling background are a good stopgap to provide some sense of place and "variation", but even shitty tiles would make it look significantly more finished - you can always find the perfect artist later.

Prediction, the next hit genre will be your genre when you inevitably put out a demo 1.5 years before releases and the cloners arrive 3 months after. 1000, 50000, 3000, 8000, etc all games who cloned yours and released in 3 months after your demo. 1.25 years later your game releases while the genre is now oversaturated, you get $2000 in net profit.....

3. Turning my current roguelite into an actual 5-10 hour rpg. This was my inital plan way back when : Create a roguelite with the battle system, then reuse that to create an actual single player RPG.

Game development is the most time-intensive and multidisciplinary industry that the human mind has ever conceived. Everything that can go wrong WILL go wrong. You do not have the endurance. You do not have the vision. You do not have the work ethic. You do not have the focus, the single-mindedness, the talent, the creativity, the experience, or the understanding of your own psychological processes to see this years-long undertaking through to the end. i missed your game in DD even though i think i would have been interested because the title & capsule art were bad and didn't indicate what the game was
>thinking of doing a soft launch and maybe getting some cheap advertisement once the game is up, but I'm not aiming for a big release. I just want a small number of dedicated players to play the game, give feedback, and let me know about bugs and stuff.
i think this is too optimistic. Branno did the same thing you seem to be doing and it didn't pay off

Game dev has an exceedingly high profit ceiling. People look at Notch and Eric who became billionaire and millionaire respectively from working on a game for a couple of years, and dream of the same level of success, or at least even a tenth or hundredth of it.
I don't think there's a single industry that can potentially make you a millionaire in just 5 years unless it involves gambling or prostitution.
So yeah these "peaks" give the bottom feeders hope that one day it might be them. It's basically a step up to the people with absolutely no skills hoping to get rich from bitcoins.

This. I have no idea how to market.

>Just post a TikTok!
Okay, but what would make an interesting TikTok that would get lots of people to stop scrolling and actually watch? And even if they do watch, how do I drive that traffic to my page? Just because someone watches doesn't mean they care to actually follow any link.

>Just give your game appeal!
Okay but wtf is appeal? How do I attain this? Someone could have the most stylistic looking game out there and yet it has no appeal.

Marketing by itself is an art form and it's why there are marketing companies out there that do it for other companies. Maybe instead of gamedevving, we should try getting jobs in advertising instead to learn how marketing actually works.

So I've been keeping track of the work I've been doing. This started on Jan 17 since that is the date when I finally started to work on game dev seriosly after I took a very long break from everything
over the last 180+ days this is the full list of days when I have not worked on my game at all:
>Mar 1 - 6 took a break because of DD
>Apr 6, 7, 8, 16, 18, 19, 20 - did not work on game for unknown reasons
>Apr 23 - May 5 took a break for personal reasons and DD
>Jul 3 - 10 took a break due to reaching milestone
every single other day during that time I have spent 6-12 hours working on my game except on the few days when it was 4-8 hours

I asked my father to transfer my phone line to my name. He didn't answer. I blocked him after a month because he didn't even answer. I messaged his mistress two days ago to tell him to transfer the gsm to my name. Today he did it. (which also pissed me off) I got into a bit of an argument with the mistress through messages. Because I was a bit straightforward when talking to her etc. She started to get a bit angry language too etc. I went into rage and now I blocked her too. Oh also I live in her house (separate, empty one) and am paying her rent. I came to her house because it is close to my father (her place). He had heart issues and and my mother had recently passed away. I thought we'd be closer and spend some time etc. Make up for the time when we didn't talk etc. Now I'm planning on signing an inheritance waiver paper. I just wanted my phone number because I've been using it for 25 years. I have half a house split between my step brother and he is in another country and not coming back, also blocked me because I asked to repay me the money he borrowed from me. I can't even sell house because of him. I am renting it tough. That's how I was able to pay my rent too.
Anyways, so it is officially over. I have no one in my life. I have lost all the desire, will towards gamedev or even life. I have nothing to do left now. I don't want to do anything at all.

>so it's really confusing why so many treat it like a rat race to the top.
Because people spend your whole life playing videogames as a way to escape from the world, and you grow up not knowing or caring about anything else you start to think that game development is your only viable pathway out of the miserable life you've created for yourself. The actual path is dealing with your social retardation, addressing your mental issues, and getting a job. Working on an external project such as a game is a far less terrifying prospect for many people than the idea of working on themselves.

>Game dev has an exceedingly high profit ceiling. People look at Notch and Eric who became billionaire and millionaire respectively from working on a game for a couple of years,
For every Notch and Eric in game development, there's 10000x more such people who made billions or millions by developing some enterprise HR management SaaS web application suite, or some cybersecurity alerting tool. It's far easier to make money with any other type of software development because you're solving real-world problems faced by big corporations with unlimited money to throw at those problems, rather than just building a novelty toy games for children and developmentally stunted adults barely willing to spend $15 on something you poured years of your life into.

I however am also one of those developmentally stunted adults, so I'm only interested in gamedev as a hobby, I get in the wagecage to build enterprise web applications.

No code I write works either and I've been doing this for 10 years. Coding is a pass/fail kind of thing. Your code either does what you want it to, or it doesn't. Until you reach that threshold, every single thing you do will result in abject failure. You can't measure progress though success. All you can do is pile up all the things you learn until you reach it.

Blackthornprod is the biggest offender of this imo
Sells overpriced classes for gamedev and marketing even though all 3 of his steam games flopped despite having a YouTube audience to funnel into his games. I want to make a "hero school manager" game, where it's like a school tycoon game and you intake students who are proc-gened rimworld style to have unique talents and you build their dorms and classrooms and you send them on dungeons too. is this a cool idea. would it be better if it was sci fi themed and you were a cadet academy or something like that?

1. the theme (whether it should be persona-style school or bodysuit boing boing space cadet academy)
2.how sandbox-rimworldy it could be. are the building mechanics tile by tile so that the players can customize to the max. do the students work on the buildings and mine shit and starve to death... or is it more casual

Something more up close and personal should be a lot better for a concept like this, I'm thinking something like The Movies where you have to cater to each actor's whims and personalities while trying to make movies, building is only secondary to that. Evil Genius too fits that niche.
Actually nevermind now I'll start making my own X-Men special-ed management game where you have to build a slime swimming pool for slimeboy and scratching posts for the catpeople.

College is supposed to be easy to do. It gives you goals that the curriculum already knows the solution to. Teaching yourself something doesn't have this luxury. You can't rely on anyone else knowing the solution to your problems. That idea is something you're tricked into thinking is how things work because that's how education works, and because you can find lots of answers when you're a beginner. You have to figure out the solutions yourself. The most that other people can do for you is to give you their perspective that you may be able to use to think of something new that might solve a problem you have.

Not being able to do something is the default state. A musician wants to release a hit but he does not know how. He fails to release a hit for decades. No matter who he asks, no one can tell him how to do it. It's no different that you cannot find an answer when you look it up. Every piece of information on the internet is entirely or partially faulty, and the vast majority of it is aimed at beginners, who are the only audience large enough to sustain an industry around teaching them. The moment those beginner videos and texts don't help you, you're almost entirely on your own.

If your code lags, you can only rely on yourself. Your understanding of your code. How computers run. The innumerable ways in which software can be made to run slower or faster. And only if you just so happen to already know exactly why some code runs slower than you expect, will you be able to solve it. The same for stability and crashing. If you think it should not crash and yet it does, then there is necessarily something that you do not know, or that you misunderstand, or that you thought you wrote once piece of code but you actually made a mistake.

Every sentence has a paragraph of things wrong with it but it all just comes down to the paradox that you have to solve your problems yourself, yet you also have to sift through what other people say to get new ideas.

Hey I'm a former industry artist (worked for AAA studio which I cannot disclose due to an NDA over ongoing project they have) I was laid off four months ago.
I have nine years experience working on games that includes 2d and 3d projects and I'm familiar with entire development process as I've been onboard from start to finish for four complete projects in my career (although I have done some work on countless smaller projects there were only a few opportunities to be involved the whole way through without getting shuffled around.)
Basically, what I'm looking for is to take my years of industry knowledge and artistic abilities and have some retarded idiot who's never shipped a game waste my time and effort by having me draw up some anime fag shit for his stupid dream game that sucks ass and will never sell.
Interested?

this 23 year old zoomer is trying to teach us anything? Imagine that he was born in 2001. Max Payne was released that year. He was too young to play GTA I-IV, he literally can't comprehend what was good in Unreal, Quake or Doom. His way of thinking could be formed around the release of The Last of Us or GTA V. He has NO idea what makes the games good. A literal baby. Remember that Halo was babby's first FPS? He was still shitting in diapers when it was released. What FPS was his first, what do you guys think, uh, DOOM 2016? Shit, he probbly didn't play Return to Castle Wolfenstein, actually I'd be surprised if he even played Call of Duty 4, from 2007. He was 6 years old at that time.

Objectively: a fucking retarded mess.
There was no effort to make mechanics, items or abilities easily comprehensible or even coherent with each others.
Which is why spell lists of that era are a goldmines of "wtf did I just read" and other "this thing can assrape an entire army or do nothing: time to channel your inner Kaiji".

It's not very clearly explained how it works in the GM manual, but instead of generating a grid/navmesh with a path, instead what I think it does is call a check of an object in the way's collision mask and then sort of brute force it by picking the least likely direction it'll collide with, and then if it does it'll repeat the check. It's a bit dumb but it works great for small horde enemies honestly.

40 to 60 games release on Steam alone EACH DAY.
About 350 games in the week around your release.
AAA release? Successful release AAA or indie, in your genre? BOOM you are done.
Also, not only are you competing with other new releases, but the entire backlog of games on every system a player owns. :)

Take all the "indie success stories" you can think of in the past 10 years and divide it by the number of devs in that time who have tried (again, 50 games a day, 1500 a month) and there's your historical likelihood of "making it."

Steam cut, higher self-employment taxes, no benefits, no retirement, AND to top it all off: Your sales diminish over time, so even if you hit this "mediocrity lottery" you'll have to do it all over again in a couple years.

Gamedev is a full-time job by itself. Barely anyone wants to do it on top of a job. Serious gamedevs are either neets or work as little as possible, on the brink of starvation, just to spend more of their 8 hours a day of time they can physically and mentally sustain doing work on the thing they care about.

I don't LIKE it, it's my game, I'm gonna make what I LIKE.

I've settled on this for now, folders are going to be PascalCase and actual files are going to be snake_case, unless they have a number like file01 in which case I will omit the _ for the 01. The whole point is to avoid shit like barrel_01_ashpile_albedo.png.

everyone uses substack and its what you should use for blog posts
since a lot of people use it you can gain subscribers and they make it very easy to monetize if you want that
for "micro blogging" use twitter, and use twitter as your main means of online networking
>tumblr
nobody uses tumblr
jesus, how old are you?

Can a fresh college graduate become millionaire in finance/big tech in 5 years? A senior could, sure, but the point was that Eric started from scratch and just built his skills along.

>Can a fresh college graduate become millionaire in finance/big tech in 5 years?
$1million net worth in 5 years is technically possible in those fields if you save as much as possible yes
for finance you have to be a quant or quant dev
in tech you have to be at a high paying FAGMAN equivalent, something like openAI
needless to say you have to be exceptional
>>
>>488711801
*exceptionally well-connected
>>
>>488711801
You're not gonna make a million in 5 years cause it would take at least 4 years full-time to make that money and you couldn't learn enough in the remaining year to be able to land the job.
