Good gamedev discussion means discussion that benefits you to have. Which means that what you want to discuss is your own games, your own ideas, and the kinds of games that you want to make because, assuming you and the person you're talking to are not retarded, talking about them will make you better at making them.

You can't do that here because nobody here cares about your game or your ideas or the kinds of games you want to make because there's barely any people here and barely any new people either, that the chance of getting someone who does care is very low. This is true essentially anywhere unless you specifically filtered for people who you knew cared about what you were going to say before you opened your mouth.

Not only do you only want to talk about things that talking about benefits you, but other people only want to talk to you about something if it benefits them. So if you wanted to talk about the nuanced implementation details of a genre and how different implementations relate to success and failure, the only people who you would want to talk to and who would want to talk to you are other people who make or want to make games in that genre, are serious about it, have the intelligence to do so, and have enough control over their ego to be honest enough to not circumvent their own intelligence and end up in a dead end. Or, you could talk to people who don't want to make the kind of game that you want to make, but find it helpful to talk to you about the kind of game that they want to make because you provide substantive advice, and in return they provide their perspective to you about the things you want to talk about.

That's "generally" the oft-repeated strategy but in reality I've found that sticking with shitty programmer art and default skyboxes and shit for too long is a great way to sap motivation and kill your project. As soon as you have some core systems implemented and something that feels fun I'd recommend biting the bullet and creating a small vertical slice that uses some real assets. Even just a single level or whatever, something that gives you a feel for what you want the whole game to end up looking like. Gives you a goal, if you're dissatisfied you know sooner rather than later what other non-programming skills you need to grind up, and you have something "real" you could show off if the opportunity arises and generally is a good motivator.

Everything that aggy and any other community parrots as good is in fact bad, it's always so easy to find counterexamples to nonsensical "wisdom".
Intentionally ignoring some aspects of the game has huge ripple effects and is guaranteed to lead to bigger problems later on, it's fine if you're purely trying to find what's fun at the basest level but trying to extend that prototypical thinking to an entire project is just silly extrapolation.

Any recommendations on how to show visual progress towards event completion? Currently the flame gets brighter and larger but it's not obvious enough to differentiate 60% done and 80% done, for example. Objective is to let the flame grow to 100% before the enemies can kill it. Sort of a DPS check

Also, not only are you competing with other new releases, but the entire backlog of games on every system a player owns. :)

Take all the "indie success stories" you can think of in the past 10 years and divide it by the number of devs in that time who have tried (again, 50 games a day, 1500 a month) and there's your historical likelihood of "making it."

Steam cut, higher self-employment taxes, no benefits, no retirement, AND to top it all off: Your sales diminish over time, so even if you hit this "mediocrity lottery" you'll have to do it all over again in a couple years.

my gob jitters when jumping or falling, i think because i'm using 16x16 sprites and my gravity variable is 0.1 (pixels). how do I get it to not do this? would it be dumb to scale up the sprites to 64x64 (sprite would look identical) to have less tiny numbers for the pixel movements. the gravity is tiny because i want the character to jump and fall slowly.

A little bit every day. Got two more monsters, Lavender and Dragon. Lavender runs across the entire screen trying to stab toy and then doubles back. Dragon uses her fire breath to block the player from advancing, which can also out the player in a bad spot if there’s enemies behind them. The trick would be to shoot at the fire to knock it down enough to jump over. As for Lavender, while he can’t shoot like other enemies, the player would not be able to attack while laying flat to duck enemy shots, which renders him a credible threat if he isn’t dealt with. I just need one more mobster enemy and then I can focus on stage 1’s general layout, which is going to be a fish processing plant by the docks. It should be a lot of fun thinking up environmental hazards.

One of the first rooms from stage 1, or part of it. Once you get past the initial loading dock, you enter the fish processing plant from the cold storage room. Easy enough to avoid detection, use the layout. Just don’t get caught inbetween them, or you’ll have to fend off getting knifed on both sides. I think something that could be best is to have a puff of air emitted above the characters every few seconds. It clues the player on where enemies are, but your own breath could give you away to the enemy, or at least make them suspicious and move closer to you if they see it.

I added a new boss fight. You will go through a phase where you have to avoid an explosion in 3/4 areas with plenty of time to avoid them and then through a phase where the explosions in go off in the same order but in rapid succession. You will need to remember those what those 4 areas are. It's going to need a lot of polishing because it's not intuitive at the moment but the mechanics are there.

Someone guide me on how to start making a third-person game that has the logic of a shmup, but you don't rotate the character, but the camera, and he's always facing away from it more or less like classic Doom (where the camera only rotates horizontally), but in third person.
My programming experience doesn't go beyond Ren'py where I make visual novels.

I heard an interview with him, I think on the no-frauds youtube channel.
he said when he's working at the office people feel comfortable coming to ask him questions which is typically a good thing(to feel comfortable with your employer) but programmers enter a flow state where they understand how to implement abstract concepts and if you get knocked out of it because people bother you you lose the flow state.

As I've gotten older, I've moved away from action games and started enjoying slower paced games with a focus on thinking and interactions. Not necessarily ones where you have to consider everything for hours just to make one move, but stuff that rewards experimentation and doing things in creative ways, self directed and sandboxy
Stuff like Factorio or Starsector, maybe the occasional roguelike deckbuilder, Terraria, etc

He's right because it is a question about inflation. This is a financial metric called Net Present Value. NPV is calculated by taking all known cash flows, projecting them into the future, assigning some risk (here, 2% inflation), and then giving a current value to that sum.

I'm going to do a Blow and implement my own scripting language (picrel) first and marry it to SDL2 to start drawing pixels to the screen
Unlike Blow, I will be under no financial pressure to be a perfectionist, which is reflected in my choice of language I am going to implement (forth is considered to be easy to port)
