I get a little more confident in my game every time I see those kinds of posts if I'm being honest, every time the games look abysmal by any standards.
>Cheap looking gameplay with no weight or purpose
>MS paint or developer debug tier UI
>Ugly flat image textures with no attempt at cohesion
>Graphics generally consist of store bought assets or things that just clash with each other badly, some games just have basic geometric shapes.
>GOD. AWFUL. TRAILERS.
>Incomplete steam page (if it has one)
>Spelling mistakes, poor grammar

Seriously its always the same, I saw some guy on /v/ shill a game sphere platformer that cost £10 with a two minute trailer that cut out to a black screen halfway through which committed every sin I just listed to boot.
I bet most games would sell better if people spent more than 10 minutes on each piece of the steam page even if the games still sucked.

I want a number to slowly decrease to zero, not going past zero.
is there any better solution than

if(number > 0)
number = number -1

if (1 > number > -1)

i have actually seen most of van gogh's publicly displayed canvasesin person(in european and usa museums, along with three major touring exhibitions). i've actually stood in front of the paintings and examined their impact with my own eyes. i also understand how painting is done, and specifically how painting was done in the 19th century. i've read van gogh's letters in the unabridged collection. my summary judgment is that van gogh is a trainwreck marketed as a tragedy, and ineptitude marketed as innovation.

certainly "feeling" is something art inspires in some people. but there is a difference between feeling inspired by sentimentality and an awesome reputation, and feeling inspired by intelligent taste and good culture. the only way you will know which is which is actually to see and study the paintings you want to talk about, rather than look at them online and read about them in books. that is a point that many other commenters here have missed as well.

in fact, to understand perspective, van gogh built himself a little frame divided by wires, and copied clumsily, wire square by square, the framed landscape. read in the letters how he talks about color design with simple textbook concepts. consider that the finest praise he could make to theo about a drawing is "i finished it in under an hour." does that seem to you like a mind seeking "freedom of expression"? isn't that an excuse for a hand that simply couldn't feel sensual about paint? don't the little hatchmark brushstrokes feel more like embroidery than sonnetry?

the deep issue with all of van gogh's work is that he is one of the first casualties of the modern art marketing juggernaut. i have to ask again, why is a tortured soul more interesting than a sublimely happy soul or a bodger artist more interesting than a master craftsman? aren't fretful souls and careless craftsmen really the most common and unremarkable people of all?

>Twombly
As Twombly enters into a physical dialogue with the corporeal and unseen, myth is manifest as sensually tangible experience. Expressed through the violent metamorphosis of mutating, ever fateful identities and thoughts, the poetry and mythology of Classical antiquity - its sense of tragedy and transformation – emerge invigorated and renewed. With an incomparable surface and cascading sense of destabilized forms, the surface of Untitled pulsates with a frenzied sensuality that reaches beyond allegory to the absolute itself. Sumptuous in opposites and allusion, Untitled offers an allegorical appeal to form and its ongoing transformation.

I just learned what sleep margin is in Game Maker.

My game's logic is locked to the framerate, which has always been fine, because it's so light weight. But to make a long story short, because my game's Sleep Margin was at the default of 1, it's actually been running inconsistently and slow this entire time.

So I tried changing it to the recommended 10~ish. And now my game runs at the correct speed, but the correct speed is super fast. Way too fucking fast. All of my designs, all the timings are ruined. I have been in development for years.

So now I either go back through the entire game rescaling every single temporal event to be a speed that I'm happy with (not feasible and in some cases due to the low resolution maybe not even possible) or set the game's framerate to 45~ (obviously awful)

I want to cry.

I used to love playing the game Pizza Tycoon when I was a kid where you managed a pizzeria and designed pizzas to cater to various tastes.
So yesterday I was at this faggoty donut place and I thought I could apply the same mechanics to designing pretty much any type of food that comes in great variety like pizzas, cakes and donuts. I could also make it a Factorio-like in that you can automate the entire process of production. Too bad I'm already working on 3 games (1 in content updates, 1 in production, 1 in pre-production) so if anyone needed an idea there you go.

Can someone tell me how this boss is not trash design?

you can barely see the worms that poison you.
you're a melee only character but the boss has a perma shield that almost instantly regenarates at the last stage. you get only one jump opportunity but if there's a bug in the way you're screwed. there's no hyperarmor, you get knocked off and juggled by anything.

>get the correct side weapon
trash design, your main kit should always be enough for bosses
>bat mode
slowly and blind shooting projectiles and extreme risk of getting hit by bats due to lower maneuverability and high recovery time after shooting. extremely unreliable
>depleting ranged weapons
not main kit and I don't have enough

Plog:
I don't think I'll have a demo ready for this next demo day. I've been preoccupied with the steam art pieces these last few days. I was stuck on the small store page capsules. Was going to call it a day after finishing the last small one but decided to look at the next one, a bigger one. Finished it quickly without having to heavily ponder placement. Ended up doing a second one but didn't finish it or rather was left undecided. So long as there aren't anymore small capsules this shouldn't take me more than a day or two. I hate how little space there is for the small capsules! Takes way too long setting it up to actually look good. With that said I think I'm going to be missing this demo day, there's still a lot to do to actually making my game playable beyond tech tier demo quality. This is disappointing desu. So much dev work and still no demo. I've been working on and off for years now!

Thanks for reading my plog.

I got really burnt out and barely touched my game since demo day, but this afternoon I finally went and figured out how to properly make some new gifs for the itch page.

If any linux anons want to do it using just ffmpeg:
ffmpeg -i input.mkv -vf "scale=347:-1,fps=30,split[s0][s1];[s0]palettegen[p];[s1][p]paletteuse" -loop -0 output.gif

My condolences anon this is the kinda thing that would want to make me just throw the whole project in the trash and give up on gamedev. I've invested too much time to just start over. Sure my game is probably going to flop but having to just cancel that long into development? Yeah that probably an instant give up for me. Even though it just gave me the opportunity to jump onto devving a more likely gmi game.

Just rest for a few days and think it through. Do you really have to update it or can you get away leaving it as is. Estimated time to fix it?

No, for a finished game.
Assets are mechanical with similar textures and minimalistic. no smart AI is needed. dying creates replayability. game scale is one large screen. like 500 meters wide.
the only problem I can spot is having your down axis be snapped is boring but allowing 4d movement means filtering retards by using a complex control scheme.

There are many things. The most egregious and prevalent at the present day is perhaps tying in-game rewards to out-game activities e.g. purchasing in-game currency with real money or limited time events. Certainly it is an effective way to make profit but it's an anti-game.

Because I have a huge checklist of everything I need to do for my game, I already passed the halfway point of development, I did everything possible to make the process as smooth as possible, and the 1 year estimate is an overestimation to give myself a time buffer. So let me offer different perspective here. I am making small games to prove to myself I can make a bigger game, but I also need to improve my skills and earn income over the years.
I released my first game last year and it's on track to make about 10k$ in its first year. Not sustainable at all but it will help me get to the next. My next game will be out within a few months, I actually started it before releasing the other game I mentioned so this will be a couple years in the making. I would absolutely not call these projects shitty little projects I don't care about, they are going to be arguable best in class in their genre (at least in one specific direction or another) or close.
I also don't know exactly what my "dream game" would entail exactly but at the very least it's probably something that would require future tech. Also future game design, which I probably will have to contribute to directly through some of my next projects, but I can only do that if I can gain financial stability from a shorter term project.
If I never find success in my 1-3 year projects then I probably won't be able to pursue making a "dream" game but at least I'll still make great games.

Made some more improvements to the AI. Basically now I have aggressive and passive mobs. Aggressive attack the player no matter what, while passive will wait to be hit by anything, then become aggressive on it. You can see this happening in the webm.

I think that's all the basic AI I need for now. Think I'm going to work on adding new useful items, and maybe an equipment screen.

I realized something about agdg “devs”. You don’t want to create great games, you want to create meme games. The type that take about 10-15 minutes to play and have a chance of getting “memed” into virality. The reason for this is because making a great game, with technical skill and depth, that a player can enjoy for 100+ hours and is truly evergreen is very difficult. And deep down, despite the outward feigning of over-confidence you display online, you know you don’t have what it takes (skill, IQ, vision) to make a great game. So you settle for a meme game.
>>
>>488807447
Basically instead of copy and pasting state machine code around, I can just define one class with all my states, and have those states just call stub functions. Then I can just extend the base class, code the states I want and leave the rest as stubs, and it will work for every use case.

For example, say I want two actors to act exactly the same, except one wanders around, and one stays put. I can just change the "passive" state function, leaving the rest exactly the same.

If you genuinely believe it isn't possible to make something that people across generations can enjoy then you need to get off 4chan and give your brain some time to heal.
Normal, functional people don't look at media and think "this is for zoomers, I can't enjoy this". There are plenty of millennials who enjoy stuff that's mainly popular with gen Z (games like Undertale or Omori). There are plenty of zoomers who enjoy stuff that came before their time and was made for millenials (the PS1 graphics trend for example). The majority of the population doesn't have the same contrarian brainrot dictating their decisions about what they're allowed to like and what they must hate. That mode of thinking is unique to this website (thank God).

Not only do I use the full name of types, I also type "unsigned int" instead of just "unsigned" I do not use "using namespace" declarations. I only use "using type" typedefs to describe the use of the type rather than to make it easier to type. e.g. I can typedef unsigned int as ID so i know it's an unique identifier not just an unknown number.

I have this problem/bug in my game does anyone know a solution to it by any chance? Ive heard its called tunneling, basically I want the player to be able to prop themselves up with a separate collision box so I have that seperate collision box set the players velocity to 0 if its colliding with a tile, but if the player falls too fast the collision box sort of sinks into the tile and then I have to jump to the surface of it before I can jump normally, Ive also noticed that it does something similar in corners

You're welcome, though I'm committing sins worse than this...
As an example, see vidrel where the "machine code" of this demo program was keyed in as opposed to compiled because I am too lazy to implement an if statement
Also, I tried using C with namespaces once and am not sure whether I want to try it again.

A bit part of pixel art is that it's a restrictive art form where you want to represent objects with few pixels and want to be as deliberate as possible with every pixel. The higher the resolution of the objects, the further away the work is from pixel art.

PIXEL ART is art that is made with deliberate and controlled placement of pixels
it's often placing individual pixels, but lines and circles and fills are also okay, as long as the artist has FULL DELIBERATE CONTROL over where each pixel goes

if you use tools and techniques that don't have pixel-level control (such as a normal photoshop brush which smears the colors and has a blurry burder) then you're not making pixel art (even though yes obviously every raster image on your computer is made of pixels)

as a consequence (but not a required criterion) of this definition, most pixel art tends to be
>low resolution
>low color count
because controlling a drawing to the level of a pixel takes a lot more time compared to other digital drawing methods
But if you do take the hours, you can make a huge as fuck detailed high-rez drawing. And it still counts as pixel art

However, because pixel art tends to be low resolution and low color palette, and its appeal is often seen as making clever use of the confined space and limited palettes, it stands to reason that making pixel art that results in an image with high resolution and an unlimited color count defeats the purpose, especially if it gets so big that you can't tell the pixel-level details without zooming in

this has nothing to do with nostalgia, art that "looks bad", laziness, low skill, or trannies

40 to 60 games release on Steam alone EACH DAY.
About 350 games in the week around your release.
AAA release? Successful release AAA or indie, in your genre? BOOM you are done.
Also, not only are you competing with other new releases, but the entire backlog of games on every system a player owns. :)

Take all the "indie success stories" you can think of in the past 10 years and divide it by the number of devs in that time who have tried (again, 50 games a day, 1500 a month) and there's your historical likelihood of "making it."

Steam cut, higher self-employment taxes, no benefits, no retirement, AND to top it all off: Your sales diminish over time, so even if you hit this "mediocrity lottery" you'll have to do it all over again in a couple years.

I am pondering if it would be worth it to do an animated isometric pixel art system where characters are split into 10 separate sprites and animated like skeletal 3d meshes, like picrel (a 1995 beta of the sims 1).
It would certainly be easier to program for and make assets for than 3D, but there are some potential pitfalls, mainly storage/memory usage.
Let's say each "sprite part" is a 32x32 sprite, and there are 10 "bones"/"parts" per character. Each part also, in addition to being moved and rotated, has alternate sprites for different directions the part is facing. Let's say 4. Let's also say the color depth is 4 bytes per pixel.
Therefore 32x32x4x4x10=163KB per character "sprite model".
Now let's compare this to 3D models --
Let's say that the 3D model is 1024 triangles and 384 vertices. Each vertex is 64 bytes -- enough to hold a position, color, uv coordinate, normal value, bone joints, and bone weights. Each triangle is 3 integers -- 12 bytes per triangle. Also, there would be a 128x128 atlas texture, with 4bpp.
So --
(1024*12)+(384*64)+(128*128*4)=102KB per model...

>>
>>488830042
Prompt is "A noose to hang myself with". Happy prompting
>>
>>488829561
...Actually, the sprite models could be smaller than 3d models hypothetically.
If the sprites were color-indexed, i.e used a 256-color palette, then they could just have 1 byte per pixel. And if the sprites were 16x16, that would definitely cut things down. So even if there were like 16 bones,
(16x16x4x16)=16KB per sprite model.

After reading learncpp while in tandem watching a beginner cpp course I am finally starting to understand coding. I didn't finish the course and stopped for a few weeks but I feel like I can look at a block of code and at least understand its structure and guess what some of it is doing now. I still need to put it to practice so maybe I'll follow along with some tuts on youtube for making crappy unreal engine games or gamedev.tv courses. All I can say so far is that I have a unquenchable desire to create something, being idle for weeks frustrates me, and that I want the game to pander to and satisfy me irregardless if it financially does well because I want something I can casually play repeatedly.

Maybe Im at a point in my 20's where I desire purpose because even gooning pisses me off its so fruitless

But likely I'm still lacking the freestyle pass, create the inner lines, do the face normal editing, and make texture alpha mask to have multimaterial meshes.

Will take me around 2-3 days more of work before is finished.

I think what I found most shocking when first browsing /g/ and /agdg/ is that people have trouble coming up with ideas, when I was always under the impression that ideas are cheap and everyone hates ideas guys
Turns out weve fallen so far that wannabe devs cant even do the easiest part
I think the economy is spread so thin now that people have basically given up on achieving a comfortable middle class lifestyle and instead have opted to bet the house on crypto, sports betting, or in this case, game dev

Godot bros how would you handle detection of what the cursor is hovering over?
>Cursor over an enemy: it will detect it's an enemy and display that. Clicking performs functions for this context (attacking, abilities)
>Cursor over an item display its an item clicking will perform the pick up function
Do I give everything an area that detects when the cursor enters? Shoot a ray from the cursor at all times and check for collision?
>>
>>488839618
collisionobjects have a property and several signals that lets the mouse interact with them

>>
>>488839760
Ah, so the collision node sends a signal when mouse enters (signal mouseOverItem or mouseOverEnemy for ex) and that signal will activate the contextMouseOverItem bool , running the functions to display the item and will effect the left clicking function, so it will run clickedItem or clickedEnemy instead of the regular click on empty ground.

>(skill, IQ, vision)
You can have all of these but the biggest problem is time. Especially for the one man armies. If you want to make the evergreen you mention you are going to need a large team. If you do it yourself you're looking at years of non stop work. It can be done. People have done it. Look at Manor Lords. Most of it was built by a solo indy dev.
>hur dur manor lords sucks
that's not the point. The point is that a single person had the skill to make all that. Now his, and our, biggest enemy is time. How much time do we allow ourselves to spend developing our dream game. How would the be different if we had a full team at our disposal. It's not a skill issue. It's a time issue. Don't reply to me you piece of shit.

the dame is a cat. she has green eyes and long blond hair and legs that go down forever until you see her sparkling gala shoes. they are partially covered in mud. she has been running. why was she running. you look back at her beautiful face and notice she's panting. she's out of breath. she drops and leaves a puddle of blood on your office floor. she's dead. The booze is fogging up your mind. Was this really happening? You walk up to the body. Such a shame. So young. She's still holding on to a piece of paper. You rip it from her hands. It's your brother's handwriting, you recognize it after all these years.
