>>488766423i have actually seen most of van gogh's publicly displayed canvasesin person(in european and usa museums, along with three major touring exhibitions). i've actually stood in front of the paintings and examined their impact with my own eyes. i also understand how painting is done, and specifically how painting was done in the 19th century. i've read van gogh's letters in the unabridged collection. my summary judgment is that van gogh is a trainwreck marketed as a tragedy, and ineptitude marketed as innovation.certainly "feeling" is something art inspires in some people. but there is a difference between feeling inspired by sentimentality and an awesome reputation, and feeling inspired by intelligent taste and good culture. the only way you will know which is which is actually to see and study the paintings you want to talk about, rather than look at them online and read about them in books. that is a point that many other commenters here have missed as well.in fact, to understand perspective, van gogh built himself a little frame divided by wires, and copied clumsily, wire square by square, the framed landscape. read in the letters how he talks about color design with simple textbook concepts. consider that the finest praise he could make to theo about a drawing is "i finished it in under an hour." does that seem to you like a mind seeking "freedom of expression"? isn't that an excuse for a hand that simply couldn't feel sensual about paint? don't the little hatchmark brushstrokes feel more like embroidery than sonnetry?the deep issue with all of van gogh's work is that he is one of the first casualties of the modern art marketing juggernaut. i have to ask again, why is a tortured soul more interesting than a sublimely happy soul or a bodger artist more interesting than a master craftsman? aren't fretful souls and careless craftsmen really the most common and unremarkable people of all?

I just learned what sleep margin is in Game Maker. My game's logic is locked to the framerate, which has always been fine, because it's so light weight. But to make a long story short, because my game's Sleep Margin was at the default of 1, it's actually been running inconsistently and slow this entire time.So I tried changing it to the recommended 10~ish. And now my game runs at the correct speed, but the correct speed is super fast. Way too fucking fast. All of my designs, all the timings are ruined. I have been in development for years. So now I either go back through the entire game rescaling every single temporal event to be a speed that I'm happy with (not feasible and in some cases due to the low resolution maybe not even possible) or set the game's framerate to 45~ (obviously awful)I want to cry.

Plog:I don't think I'll have a demo ready for this next demo day. I've been preoccupied with the steam art pieces these last few days. I was stuck on the small store page capsules. Was going to call it a day after finishing the last small one but decided to look at the next one, a bigger one. Finished it quickly without having to heavily ponder placement. Ended up doing a second one but didn't finish it or rather was left undecided. So long as there aren't anymore small capsules this shouldn't take me more than a day or two. I hate how little space there is for the small capsules! Takes way too long setting it up to actually look good. With that said I think I'm going to be missing this demo day, there's still a lot to do to actually making my game playable beyond tech tier demo quality. This is disappointing desu. >>488797801There are many things. The most egregious and prevalent at the present day is perhaps tying in-game rewards to out-game activities e.g. purchasing in-game currency with real money or limited time events. Certainly it is an effective way to make profit but it's an anti-game.

>>488800217I can say a lot of things but since I'm about a year from finishing my game you're very likely to just reply with "see you in 5 years lmao" even though I actually am 1 year from the end
>>488799834I avoid thinking if at all possible. I outline what I need to make during pre-production and just concentrate on clearing the to-dos, following the schedule, and reaching the next milestone. I basically act as if I have a publisher. This helps me avoid thinking. It's worked so far.

>>488801469Because I have a huge checklist of everything I need to do for my game, I already passed the halfway point of development, I did everything possible to make the process as smooth as possible, and the 1 year estimate is an overestimation to give myself a time buffer. >>488801347So let me offer different perspective here. I am making small games to prove to myself I can make a bigger game, but I also need to improve my skills and earn income over the years.I released my first game last year and it's on track to make about 10k$ in its first year. Not sustainable at all but it will help me get to the next. My next game will be out within a few months, I actually started it before releasing the other game I mentioned so this will be a couple years in the making. I would absolutely not call these projects shitty little projects I don't care about, they are going to be arguable best in class in their genre (at least in one specific direction or another) or close. I also don't know exactly what my "dream game" would entail exactly but at the very least it's probably something that would require future tech. Also future game design, which I probably will have to contribute to directly through some of my next projects, but I can only do that if I can gain financial stability from a shorter term project. If I never find success in my 1-3 year projects then I probably won't be able to pursue making a "dream" game but at least I'll still make great games.

I realized something about agdg “devs”. You don’t want to create great games, you want to create meme games. The type that take about 10-15 minutes to play and have a chance of getting “memed” into virality. The reason for this is because making a great game, with technical skill and depth, that a player can enjoy for 100+ hours and is truly evergreen is very difficult. And deep down, despite the outward feigning of over-confidence you display online, you know you don’t have what it takes (skill, IQ, vision) to make a great game. So you settle for a meme game.
>>488807447Basically instead of copy and pasting state machine code around, I can just define one class with all my states, and have those states just call stub functions. Then I can just extend the base class, code the states I want and leave the rest as stubs, and it will work for every use case. For example, say I want two actors to act exactly the same, except one wanders around, and one stays put. I can just change the "passive" state function, leaving the rest exactly the same.

>>488826935That's an inner circle game albeit
PIXEL ART is art that is made with deliberate and controlled placement of pixelsit's often placing individual pixels, but lines and circles and fills are also okay, as long as the artist has FULL DELIBERATE CONTROL over where each pixel goesif you use tools and techniques that don't have pixel-level control (such as a normal photoshop brush which smears the colors and has a blurry burder) then you're not making pixel art (even though yes obviously every raster image on your computer is made of pixels)as a consequence (but not a required criterion) of this definition, most pixel art tends to be>low resolution>low color countbecause controlling a drawing to the level of a pixel takes a lot more time compared to other digital drawing methodsBut if you do take the hours, you can make a huge as fuck detailed high-rez drawing. And it still counts as pixel artHowever, because pixel art tends to be low resolution and low color palette, and its appeal is often seen as making clever use of the confined space and limited palettes, it stands to reason that making pixel art that results in an image with high resolution and an unlimited color count defeats the purpose, especially if it gets so big that you can't tell the pixel-level details without zooming inthis has nothing to do with nostalgia, art that "looks bad", laziness, low skill, or trannies

BOOM you are done. Also, not only are you competing with other new releases, but the entire backlog of games on every system a player owns. :)Take all the "indie success stories" you can think of in the past 10 years and divide it by the number of devs in that time who have tried (again, 50 games a day, 1500 a month) and there's your historical likelihood of "making it."Steam cut, higher self-employment taxes, no benefits, no retirement, AND to top it all off: Your sales diminish over time, so even if you hit this "mediocrity lottery" you'll have to do it all over again in a couple years.>He thinks that indie gamedev can provide a sustainable primary income in 2024HahahahahaH O B B YOBBY
>>488827228also because of the "deliberate control" criterion, pixelizing a non-pixel-art image to achieve the "low-rez" look (like what Dead Cells does, by rendering 3D models as pixels) is also not called "pixel art"needless to say but i said it>>488827573booba

>>488828997There's no clear cut, but once your character sprites are well over a hundred pixels tall(especially if it's not a fighting game), it starts to look low-rez regular art.
>>488828997Pixel art is pixel art, no matter whether it's 720p of 8k
I am pondering if it would be worth it to do an animated isometric pixel art system where characters are split into 10 separate sprites and animated like skeletal 3d meshes, like picrel (a 1995 beta of the sims 1).It would certainly be easier to program for and make assets for than 3D, but there are some potential pitfalls, mainly storage/memory usage.Let's say each "sprite part" is a 32x32 sprite, and there are 10 "bones"/"parts" per character. Each part also, in addition to being moved and rotated, has alternate sprites for different directions the part is facing. Let's say 4. Let's also say the color depth is 4 bytes per pixel. Therefore 32x32x4x4x10=163KB per character "sprite model".Now let's compare this to 3D models --Let's say that the 3D model is 1024 triangles and 384 vertices. Each vertex is 64 bytes -- enough to hold a position, color, uv coordinate, normal value, bone joints, and bone weights. Each triangle is 3 integers -- 12 bytes per triangle. Also, there would be a 128x128 atlas texture, with 4bpp.So -- (1024*12)+(384*64)+(128*128*4)=102KB per model...

>>488829058i knowmortal kombat is just real life people dressing up and photographing themit's not pixel art then, it's a technique to make work easier and faster BECAUSE pixel art by nature is tedious and costly
>>488830042Prompt is "A noose to hang myself with". Happy prompting
>>488829561...Actually, the sprite models could be smaller than 3d models hypothetically. If the sprites were color-indexed, i.e used a 256-color palette, then they could just have 1 byte per pixel. And if the sprites were 16x16, that would definitely cut things down. So even if there were like 16 bones,(16x16x4x16)=16KB per sprite model.

I think there are work arounds people are trying to make so if you care about optimization in any way it's worth looking into https://youtu.be/lJu_DgCHfx4?si=1ZhnPakS9UE0XyuC

Godot bros how would you handle detection of what the cursor is hovering over?>Cursor over an enemy: it will detect it's an enemy and display that. Clicking performs functions for this context (attacking, abilities)>Cursor over an item display its an item clicking will perform the pick up functionDo I give everything an area that detects when the cursor enters? Shoot a ray from the cursor at all times and check for collision?

>>488839503i do but theyre reeeeeaaaallll bad
>>488839760Ah, so the collision node sends a signal when mouse enters (signal mouseOverItem or mouseOverEnemy for ex) and that signal will activate the contextMouseOverItem bool , running the functions to display the item and will effect the left clicking function, so it will run clickedItem or clickedEnemy instead of the regular click on empty ground.Am I on it or am I going off the rails here I have only made pong and mobile slop clones so far

I'm sorry, I'm just this shit has been asked a trillion times, but I have no clue which engine to useI know there was a huge drama before with unity, are things good now or do I discard it?UE5 and Godot seem fun too, but man I have no fucking idea which one to actually learn
it's pronounced gah dough

>>488808008>(skill, IQ, vision)You can have all of these but the biggest problem is time. Especially for the one man armies. If you want to make the evergreen you mention you are going to need a large team. If you do it yourself you're looking at years of non stop work. It can be done. People have done it. Look at Manor Lords. Most of it was built by a solo indy dev.>hur dur manor lords sucksthat's not the point. The point is that a single person had the skill to make all that. Now his, and our, biggest enemy is time. How much time do we allow ourselves to spend developing our dream game. How would the be different if we had a full team at our disposal. It's not a skill issue. It's a time issue. Don't reply to me you piece of shit.
