Aldi, at least in the US, is known for being shitty. They're always dirty, understaffed, and you can never count on anything being in stick. A couple weeks ago I was at Aldi and every register went down and the staff had no idea how to fix it so they started only accepting cash.
I've only ever gone to Lidl once when I was in Porto, but it was much, much nicer then any Aldi I've ever been to.

>Heightmap from noise
oh, so the geometry is entirely real-time? the way my system worked was, I used noise to generate a terrain one vertex at a time, and then I used a heightmap that only recorded the OFFSET, the deformation. the heightmap was higher res (more pixels than the base mesh has vertices) and vertex displacement would interpolate the data from the heightmap to fake more detail.
to stitch the heightmaps together I can't think of a GPU solution so I guess one would have to just read all of the edge heights and average them between each two chunks. but that seems really intense because it's happening on the CPU and involves writing to two chunks at a time, all the time.

Tfw just found an inventory making tutorial that looks promising. Not the same engine as mine though. The amount of inventory tutorials I've seen only for most to suck is huge! Why do so many of them suck at making a good inventory? For such "expert coders" they seem to lack the skill in making it feel good. I already have my own inventory but it's got too many things interconnected to even be usable in a new game.

First, think of the basic premise. For 999, this is "a bunch of strangers wake up on a cruise ship with no memory of how they got there". For Ghost Trick, it was "a ghost witnessed his own death but can't remember who he was or why he was killed". Then, think of all the characters you'll need. What type of people would you find in the setting where the story takes place? What types of personalities would they have? After that, decide on the plot twist. Then it's just a matter of filling in all the gaps.

The general badly needs a split to survive.
Why should anyone be expected to care about an occasional progress from a game made by a random anonymous person, not in their genre, made with an unfamiliar engine?
At the moment the only common ground we have is shitposting and it leads to low quality threads. We need to focus the discussion. A thread per major engine and a thread for enginedevs.

I see lots of this every week on r/Games. It's usually the same games posted too. Other boards don't allow you to post progress.
>>
>>491784978
enginedevs have their thread already >>>/g/gedg. It has 163 posts in 24 hours. The thread piror to that had 319 posts between wednesday and saturday afternoon, then the thread didn't exist for a few hours. It's a ghost town.

>Why should anyone be expected to care about an occasional progress from a game made by a random anonymous person, not in their genre, made with an unfamiliar engine?
I don't care what engine your game is made with, the only people who do are nodevs who want to start endless enginewar arguments. People don't post progress here because there's no point. Responses to progress include the following:
>no (You)s or generic comments like 'good job'
Means nobody cares about your progress
>omg fucking SOVL
which means your game just isn't going to be commercially viable and you're not gonna make it
>what a fucking shit game just kill yourself
schitzo posts like this usually mean your work is good enough to hurt someone's ego and you're probably gonna do fine.
>>
>>491785627
That's the point I'm making. Even if the game itself doesn't interest you there's still common ground for discussion and you don't get lost in a sea of shitposts

yes, i could do programmer art, but even if i'd be skilled to do that, i dont enjoy it, i just dont want to spend time doing that.

I'm not going to argue that the digital stores are solely responsible, but they did throw gasoline on the fire by making sure that the theoretical margin to make profit is way lower.
However, the reason companies are investing in DEI and BRIDGE is because they were already struggling to begin with.

Anyone know why putting this code
>if Input.is_action_just_pressed("sprint"):
>prev_speed = speed
>speed *= 1.5
>if Input.is_action_just_released("sprint"):
>speed = prev_speed
into func _input(event) results in webm related when I mash random buttons really fast, but putting it in func _physics_process(delta) works exactly how it's supposed to?
>>
>>491802429
I don't know which engine you're using, but could it be possible that you might be outpacing the callback with your keyboard spam? In that event, that means that just_pressed gets sent twice, while just_released only gets processed once afterwards.

>>
>>491802429
Firstly, use
>_unhandled_input(event: InputEvent)
instead of _input. This will allow any GUI/Control elements to grab/consume the input before it get to your game character.

Secondly, you should use
>event.is_action_pressed("sprint")
and
>event.is_action_released("sprint")
instead of Input.is_action_just_pressed/released. This will check the actual event being propagated, rather than the state of the button.

IMO, the most practical split for this general would be an "/apgg/ - Aspiring Professional Gamedev General". This would be a split along the "soul vs slop" philosophical lines. The /apgg/ general could take all the market analysis and technical question posts with it, as well as the crying, banter, depressionposts, ritualposts, etc. Basically, all the stuff that the /v/tard nodevs hate.

/agdg/ could keep all the "soulful" progress posts. Maybe even tack on the >>>/ic/beg/ PSA:

The only split I want is splitting porn out of demo day. Don't want my game next to cuck porn and it's dumb as shit letting people with commercially released games making 10k a month take the top spots in an event made for amateur devs to get feedback. You don't need feedback on a fucking RPGmaker porn game with thousands of active players, no reason for it to be in DD.

NTA; from my time with romhacking Super Metroid, I've learned a lot about how they handle it. There's tile and subtile (pixel) precision for position and velocity in the game. Every suit and liquid combination (normal, varia, gravity vs water, lava, acid) has its own movement/physics acceleration table. It's pretty fascinating stuff

The xray visor is extremely hacky and its a miracle it works at all. The SNES has instructions for per-scanline graphics operations that happen at the end of the draw cycle

2d software renderer progress:

can now load and draw images, and also rotate and scale them. rotating + scaling properly is really hard so it still looks a bit buggy, but im confident ill be able to get it to mostly look decent eventually. there are several optimizations i can also do, because rotating specially is fairly expensive. one thing ive been thinking about is that when an image is loaded, i automatically rotate it for like 32 or 64 angles, and store the result of those rotations in 32 or 64 buffers, and then when draw_image is called from lua, i round the angle to the closest buffer and use the premade buffer instead of redoing the calculations all over. this wouldnt work well if you also had arbitrary scaling for each image going on, but for most assets in my games the scale for images tends to be fixed and not variable, so this is something that would work as an optimization. the next thing i wanna get right after i make the rotation look a bit better is the transformation matrix stack thing, so i can apply transformations in a nested manner to everything that i wanna draw to the screen

plog: i've been sifting through my code and tags and deleting all the unnecessary stuff after separating the hud/menu/other thing from the characters prefab gameobject
i am now chasing after a tag that keeps regenerating because apparently if something uses it, it comes back. i cannot find where this thing is hiding even after noticing a pattern. with the pattern it is supposedly hiding in one specific scene but i cannot find it for whatever reason. i am now assuming the prefabs connected to certain ui options is where it's being triggered from and being regen'd from.

i do not like this method of handling my ui but it does make handling ui a lot easier when i don't have to adjust it for all characters manually to be shown in one way or another

thanks for reading my plog.

I have used both before for a day or so. Unity's downside is the confusion that comes from having basically two engines in one and the company might do something stupid.

Godot is better if you're not a retard and can read the docs.
Unity is better if you need extensive handholding, since some jeet will have made an exact tutorial for any kind of game you can come up with. No guarantees for if that tutorial is up to date or if you even learn anything by blindly following it.

Godot is that way because it doesn't force you into a framework like rpg maker.

The issue with such frameworks, is what if you want to make rpg maker with a 3D background, what if you want HD art, what if you want online?
what if you want now an FPS, but now your idea becomes a VN, a tower defense.

Godot real power comes from the fact it doesn't force you anything.
It's weird, because godot main power is that gives you the tools to make anything, like how your imagine, perfectly crafted.

But It ask you to get good.
So godot simply request to get better at gamedev, unlike easier engines, which promise easy path, but that path is a trap that stunt your growth.

Godot's not missing anything in terms of technologies. It depends on what you want out of your engine. Unity and Unreal are going to have far more in the asset stores that you can buy and it'll "just work", while you might have to make an effort to port any assets to Godot, since most asset creators don't port assets specifically for Godot because it doesn't have a paid asset store.

- 30 minutes changing the hover/click logic to be handled by the main script instead of the components themselves
- 3 hours 30 minutes working on paths.
Basically I just used Collisions shapes as AABBs and call a function every frame to deal with hover, with buildings being in front of paths so both aren't selected/clicked.
For clicks, I use `_unhandled_input` so gui events in UIs aren't captured.
For the path reveal shader, I show a percentage of the path like so: UV.x < pct * region_rect_x/100.0
Where `region_rect_x` is a shader uniform I set and 100.0 is the size of my path textures. There's probably a more idiomatic way of doing this, but it works for now.
The plan is that paths need to be 'built' in order to see/build on the node on the other side. Might also have upgrades for paths like triggering synergies on buildings, barricades, or other benefits.

As for git, you can host git locally. It also can be set up on webservers, but I wouldn't recommend that.

this is exactly why i need to get rich off gamedev. there is just no way i want to wage for decades. do you know how miserable that was for me? i'm no savant when it comes to gamedev and yeah it's hard for me at times but i'd rather gamedev for decades and make enough to subsist off it than to go back in the wagecage. i need one game that makes enough so that i can begin such a cycle of not waging while continuing to pump out games that do moderately well to sustain such a life.

>How many characters are you planning on having?
That depends of how well the development goes, but I have expectations to having more than 20 characters for a 1.0 version, I'm planning on making a demo for Steam Fest and after the fest ends, launch the game on early access to use whorever momentum I get from the event.
The early access version will have minimum 4 to 8 characters and two fully finished maps minimum, then my work will be creating more characters and maps because I want that to be selling point: characters. If the players want me to make additional modes for the game, I will do my best to make them true As long as is something reasonable I can handle alone as a solodev

Been going back and forth between these two resolutions.

Left side: Pretty standard shmup aspect ratio, zoomed out view feels a little smoother/less pixely. Player has more space to move but more screen visible probably means more assets to fill it with variety.

Right side: Little more claustrophobic, but everything feels more "substantial", right up in the action. Chunky pixels at full screen means I can't hide shitty/lazy art.

I started with a version that I am unsure was an LTS version. Their site is pretty bad at counting it as one or the other eg same version number but one is in the LTS section and one is not in the LTS section. Iirc there was a newer version where I downloaded them from different sections but had the same download name.

I did two successful "major upgrades" went from 2018.3.x -> 2018.3.x -> 2018.4.36 which is the final LTS version available for 2018. I eventually reattempted going past 2018 but from 2018.4.36, it still failed, random stuff simply broken even though it showed no obvious signs as to why. If I recall correct,
>random sprite being invisible even though it is attached in the prefab
>animator randomly playing the wrong animation when walking around or continuing to play after I stopped
>character randomly sliding around after I let go of the movement keys
Didn't want to take the chance so I deleted the game and the newer Unity version. Then I copied a backup folder of my game to go back to my functional version. No intent of upgrading it ever again though, I intend to release this game using this version of Unity as it's new enough for what I want.

I had this bug that's beeen annoying me for months where my player's feet would move and slide around during the idle animation, I thought it was a unity bug and after nothing worked I realized that it was a blender issue. Setting simplify to 0 instead of 1 in the animation tab on the export settings fixed it, the only downside is that my export size went from 9mb to 13mb but it's a fair tradeoff.
>>
All this talk about different versions of engines and issues is the reason why I'm so paranoid about downloading the "right" version of the networking asset I want. After intense research I found about the absolute newest version I could use and vaguely an old version that is compatible. The problem now becomes whether I should go for one of the newer but still compatible versions or something not as new. On one hand something older allows me to upgrade should there be issues but on the other I've heard that this asset breaks stuff very easily when upgrading. Sadly they seem to have multiple major versions in a year so it makes it difficult on knowing which is best for me.

Never upgrade Unity mid project is the goal for a lot of developers, finish your project on one version that has all you need. Assets can be a pain, so find ones that works with the version you have, stick with it and don't upgrade for newer versions of those assets.
>>
>>491840120
>Mom doesn't know I'm releasing my game, I don't want to give her false hope.
Understandable. Does she even know the existence of your game? Hope it does well!
>>
>>491842420
I have no intents of upgrading the version further, the current choice of upgrading it for the second time was to give me options on the asset I want. The asset has a lot of options but it's poorly documented in terms of the compatibility. After heavy research on it and the second asset I didn't mention, I narrowed the choices. But now I'm scared of picking the wrong version. Like what if one has a major bug? Or if I should just pick one that is used by one of the tutorial videos I saw just so that I can follow along. I can only semi guess which is the best to go with.

only ideas I've got are to either keep all the data with the overworld town object then send the relevant info over to generate the in-town scene, which seems like a real bitch to integrate with saving

This isn't "game advertising general", you don't need to care about any game here, just post progress.
>>
>>491846362
you got something to tell us about your game anon?

hgdg, made as a joke, has some how miraculously survived so far...

Anon is wrong. Threads don't get bumped out that fast. A slow general can survive for hours if you go to the slower ones like Terraria.

>look up concord
>people acting mad that devs are potentially going to lose their jobs for this game failing
>"it's your fault for being rascist, misogynist, and anti lgbt that these people are going to lose their job!"
huh? can i get $5m in sales on the game i'm making? why do these woke devs deserve more money than me?

they are on the right side of history. If Concord succeeds, imagine how woke Concord 2:Cuckcord Rising could be.

I hate it when I find something I like while searching for something else, just clicking it directly would stain their analytics with a weird search from one guy. I assume at least Youtube doesn't show it until multiple people have searched the same thing.

>guy has a job, making games
>guy performs job poorly, makes bad games
>guy gets fired, so bad games no longer get made
What exactly is wrong with this? If we were talking about doctors, drivers, chefs, everyone would agree that if the person is incompetent he shouldn't be working anymore. Why are game developers such a privileged cast that they shouldn't ever suffer for their performance?

Concord's failure isn't exclusively because of the DEI characters, though it is a contributing factor.

Concord is the very definition of corporate slop. They literally took Overwatch (an already failing product), gave it a reskin and called it a new game. No new novelty, no iteration on the genre or anything new.

Sony was just trying to chase a trend and were 8 years too late. That being said, Concord COULD have been a hit, had the developers played their cards right. With a minor pivot, they could have made their money back with the following changes:
- Sexy anglo / asian characters with slim figures / nice curves
- Iteration on the genre -> throw in MOBA (like Deadlock) or throw in bullet heaven / roguelike (like VS)
- Delete the live service model

But who are we kidding. It's Sony.

Can you cool it with the antisemitism? This is 2024, feelings (not facts) matter.

This is why only professional company-hired devs matter, they aren't prone to emotional outbursts and actually do work

But the guy in question is/was a professional company-hired dev and went on to throw a tantrum on social media over Concord flopping?

Im making a pond background. Im happy with the water and the stream, but the grass and the bottom parts are too plain, need more work.

That's cute, anon. Good job.
What's going to be in the foreground?

They don't, what they deserve is a wake up call as they've been disconnected from reality for long enough.
Shit's actually sad to see.

With a solid name in place, it is smooth sailing from here on. God speed, anon.
>>
To all the talentless parasites trash-talking MarmoDev, let me remind you: he’s a developer who’s 1000x better than you. Whether his current game succeeds or fails, he can complete several high-quality projects in the time it takes you to produce one piece of garbage you’re too embarrassed to show anyone.
