Here is my project list.
https://soaringmoon.itch.io/

>Facet Final
A large scope ARPG game with shitty devart.
>Keygemin: Windborne Kin
A large scope CRPG game with CYOA mechanics. Super unique. Passion project.
>Facet Fury
Incremental game I made for Big Mode Jam, whose assets I am recycling for Facet Final.
>Nandroid Generator
For the robowaifu people.

Spent most of the day playing Once Human, IE crabbing. But it was Sunday, so that is my excuse.

webm related is my most recent work, getting the environmental hazards working. Water, mud, lava, acid... etc.

Well, just found a dev showing how to code something. Seemed very useful and I wondered how much I could get away with copying code. Not like he posted it all but enough for me to figure out how to do something similar as well that would make sense for me. Then I see his game....he literally made something similar to what I want to make. A literal platformer (pls understand it's within a niche that is imo fun). It literally sold well. The guy is talented at art and code! How do I even compete against that?

Before I even figured out the genre, just seeing him travel in one level had a ton more art assets of pixel gold quality! A single level of mine has nowhere near that many art assets and I'm only talking about the environment and background! It'd take me months to make that many for 1 location and to make them of at least okay quality where most people would probably be unimpressed and find it amateur tier but at least not worse. I can't do this, the scope would increase to an insane amount of time for mediocre tier art. I'd probably end up spending two months just drawing it all and setting it up for one location out of several! It'd increase development time by over an extra year.

I have come to a blockage...design blockage. I cannot decide on what personalites or traits my NPC will have (as a system, not for specific characters).
I actually want my generated NPCs to feel nice and for personalities/traits to matter.

I have never written a design document, all my gamedev has been rather "from my head" so far, but it's time to start.

I cant fucking decide.

So I'm still putting together physicals and have a few questions;
The covers I got printed in 200gsm at my local printing shop came out a little blurry, is this a me problem or was their machine just shit?
Other games I've been looking at have things like ISBN numbers, copyright information, things about trademarks, age restrictions etc on them. How important is half of this stuff?
Should I do a special physical just for press kits? What's the expectation on those?
Pic for attention

So while everyone else is happily copying vampire survivors you're complaining that your game idea... A platformer of all things... Has been made already.

What resolution was the cover image you gave them? For online you'll get away with 72dpi, for print you need more like 300dpi

Also making physical copies... Why?

Because I can and I want to? It's pretty easy you know, buy some CD cases for cheap, get printing done for cheap, get CDs printed (or get blank cover CDs and print it yourself with a home printer), make an installer for your game (surprisingly easy to do for Windows), burn it to the disc and done, you have a physical copy of your game, it's not rocket science. Hell, if little emo retards in underground bands can physically release their shitty albums, you can too. Don't forget to spruce it up by buying shrinkwrap and using a hair dryer on it, and also putting goodies in it. Mine has little custom made cards.

is voxel art the perfect art style for programmers? i dont mean high detail voxel art. just cubes with pixel art on them. but the cubes are also grid-snapped in size.
so basically you only need to draw one texture onto the 3d model and animating is as simple as rotating some cubes.
also you dont need to draw more perspectives.

Need help identifying some of these specific 80s instruments:

The tribal xylophone melody (or is it an electric piano) thing:

The Sonic the Hedgehog instrument melody part:

The echoey drum thing in the background (They use this a lot in 80s action movie music right as something crazy happens):

The "Tish" part in the Boom...Tish...BoomBoom...Tish...

- - - -

Here's what I'm trying to make in LMMS, but the instrumentation is all wrong. It doesn't sound 80s at all except maybe the clapping part:

I'm not a musician and don't know what all those 80s instruments are called, so I'm just going through them one by one in LMMS trying them out but they all sound wrong.

pretty much has been the same for me in other jobs but alas i am still learning quite a lot about this specific tech stack so i can't quite go at my usual breakneck speed

game devving is always a lot more fun because i can just rewrite entire systems within an hour and have them work first try because i know exactly how everything works, whereas something like that would probably take someone else like a week

>The part I hate is having to wake up early and not sleeping in, I miss waking up at 11am like a NEET

God that would be amazing. Great motivation and bouncing ideas off each other even if your games are radically different, plus you have a free bug tester on hand and can help each other when the going gets tough. I've been remaking the demo day review app for the past month or so to make it more user (other than me) friendly, less janky and more usable in general. Since demo day is in less than 2 weeks - here's some progress:
* Added context for previous projects and known review configs
* Configs and review projects are stored in platform-independent format (archive)
* Added support for multiple review styles
* Currently only one review style is implemented (the one I've been using during recent demo days is implemented/ported)
* The app can download jam data and game covers from itch.io
* Changes to jam games are tracked with each data refresh (new covers, deleted/added games, changed names, changed short text)
* /agdg/ logo is shown only for /agdg/ jams
* Molymeme is put as cover art for games without cover art, but only if the jam is /agdg/
* Added randomizer for game picking

Hopefully I'll have enough time to implement second review style before DD to spice it up a little bit.

Marmo, I just want to say we never really had a friendship here, and we never interacted much on all this time.

I'll be 100% honest.
I never had an interest in marmorreal, but your game seems polished, and competenly made.

Your only issue is that you never bothered to improve in art, so it looks begginer made.

Hopefully you can now move from that project, or work towards replacing the art with VRoid models.

But the important thing is that you made it, you got to the end.
99% of agdg, from the OG days gave up.
But you didnt, and you kept pushing, so you won in the end.

Hopefully you win in the end.
But still, you made it.
Meanwhile 99% of agdg will give up.

And that's why you're better than 99% of agdg.
You have gained my respect.

I used to wonder if you'll ever finish and release marmorreal.
But you prove everyone of your haters wrong.

Did it you did, good job.

how does dark souls have varied hand positions during run animation, depending on the weapon?

I am unable to bring myself to use AI chatbots as friends or especially girlfriends, something deep with-in resists this idea.

In 3D animations it's possible to do something called "animation blending" to combine multiple animations into one. So they can have different animations for the hand and combine them with a walk cycle.

I don't think this is actually true, there should be a couple more years with enough data. The problem is organizing it. There's also the fact that models are being made multi-modal (there is so much non text data left). If you have real sources showing a lack of data I'd be interested to see them though.

>? It won’t, you literally cant even detect the difference between human and AI generated text so… yeah… 2 more weeks AI will magically combust…

Your skepticism is understandable. You're right that distinguishing between human and AI-generated text has become increasingly difficult, even for experts. This rapid progress is impressive, but it doesn't necessarily mean AI systems are on the brink of collapse or "magical combustion."
A few points to consider:

1.Text generation ≠ general intelligence: While AI excels at producing human-like text, this is a narrow skill. It doesn't mean AI systems fully understand or can replicate human-level reasoning across all domains.
2.Data quality remains crucial: Even if AI-generated text is indistinguishable, the underlying training data's quality and diversity still matter greatly for model performance and stability.
3.Ongoing research and safeguards: The AI community is actively working on techniques to ensure model reliability, detect AI-generated content, and maintain dataset integrity.
4.Gradual changes vs. sudden collapse: Any potential issues from training on AI-generated content would likely manifest gradually rather than in a sudden "combustion" scenario.
5.Real-world anchoring: Many AI applications require integration with real-world data and systems, which helps maintain a connection to factual, up-to-date information.

While the concerns about AI training on AI-generated content are worth discussing, the reality is likely more nuanced than either an imminent collapse or problem-free progress. Continuing research, responsible development practices, and ongoing monitoring are key to addressing potential risks.

Just checked Marmoreal’s Steam page. It really doesn’t inspire much confidence. Capsule art is ugly, trailer is boring, Early Access blurb implies that the game is still in early alpha, and price is too high. But of course everyone on agdg should hope it succeeds regardless.

I don't belive maromodev spent 10 years. 10 years jerking off? Maybe. But 10 years of effort on THIS? For character designs that are barely unique? I mean come on naming a pyro character FIRE A that's just lazy man. Where did the 10 hours a day go into? Cuz it wasn't art, does it really take 10 years of programming to make a simple bullet hell?
>>
>>491881978
Jerking off and throwing out old work. The earliest version of the game spent a few years as pure 2D on a custom engine, so all the work put into that was completely thrown away when it switched to Unity.

The trailer and capsule art are absolutely perfectly serviceable, showcases the gameplay, all the characters, the features, doesn't spend more than 5 seconds on any given scene, doesn't start with 10 seconds logo for a company, etc. You guys have no eye for these things and vastly overestimate how much a trailer can do for a game, apparently unless it outright sucks your dick it's a shit trailer. I hardly think you could have done better with the available materials, unless you straight-up upgraded all the art and models in the game.
>>
>>491882240
I imagine thats how 99% of games here are, years and years of wasting time on outdated engine versions, updating, and redoing everything instead of just working a 9-5 job saving up money and buying a good UI designer/artist/musician. At least yours came out I guess

>just working a 9-5 job saving up money and buying a good UI designer/artist/musician

i thought most people are working/studying full-time anyway

also hiring people is hideously expensive and laborious, imo unless you are sitting on a pile of capital (ie. not a 9-5 job savings) you are better off networking and revenue sharing with trustworthy people you know not to flake. blowing all your money on an UI designer and then finding out you need to pivot and throw that work out is a punch in the gut

look at the "kneecap". left stays somewhat round since it has one more vertex to approximate a curve while right is just a straight line so the "knee" sort of shrinks as it bends.

>>
>>491883524
First of all, it's 10 seconds, not 15. That's a 50% exaggeration on your part. Secondly, the characters literally get switched up less than every 2 seconds or so (6 characters over 10 seconds) to showcase the cast. I have 0 attention span and even I don't see any problem with it. The game will fail for many reasons but the trailer is not one of it.

It should probably start with showing off the game's strong suits like the gameplay and cool 4x looking stuff and skill builds, then the funny animations then the anime titties. All you see with the walking are the graphics which are potentially the games weakest point but still serviceable of course.

>sounds and music is either store-bought or royalty free.
I think this is why music bros seem chill. They seem to be the most common and the overabundance of assets online for music and sfx that are usuable across multiple genre's doesn't allow them to get cocky the way artists seem to frequently be like. I feel bad for music bro's. Their stuff can come out great but get nowhere near the fame cocky attention seeking artists on twitter do. I know of one music guy who uses and ochestra to make music, cant tell if hes rich or not but he is good at music. I have some of it and hes even worked on a major indie hit but the behavior is so much more respectable than what i see with artists online. Would suck if he's financially just as bad in a position as artists whove got huge egos charging high amounts for 1 off commissions that they proceed to spam online creating an air of "i made this game" rather than "this asset was paid for by anon game company for their game anon empty cube scene game"

Rant over. Oh Ive even found SFX one of my favorite games uses. Devs never confirmed if it was stolen so I presume they felt humilated someone found where the sfx came from. Seemed very obscure which is why I asked before I risked putting in stolen sfx assets and getting sued or something but they went radio silent after I mentioned the sfx lol

For me it's how easily I pull muscles, is it because I don't work out at all and am extremely sedentary? Move one way suddenly a random pain somewhere as low as below my belly button on either side or even my back, to as high as the chest (lungs and heart area) to even my back areas same length. A sharp pain with a breath deep enough. Rethinking the idea of getting a labor intesive job with how sedentary I am.

>2. Sitting at desk with had posture, suddenly sharp sensation to the right of the belly button area on a deep breath, have to keep breaths shallow again
This has plagued me for years. However I dislike that you said "breathing apparatus" makes me paranoid that my suspicions of this being tied to my diaphragm or lungs via what happened to me as a kid are the reason for this. Got hit in the waist/chest area via a ball being kicked at high force directly at me by a grown man that came off like a psycho that blends into society somewhat. Fucker did it on purpose, was unable to breath for a brief period of time. I was like maybe 9 or 10 at the time.

How do I make space backgrounds like this? Or like Galduen of the Void? They all seem to give it very cohesive look. The background in mine feels a bit out of place even if unique. I think it might just be my amatuerish skill that makes it look the way it does. Sure it gives my game its own unique feel but I just cant quite capture the feel of a it being distant stars and gas clouds. Feels more like I'm zoomed in on some gas clouds and stars
>>
>>491884842
The intro showcases 6 completely different environments in those 10 seconds of "walking forward". I think it's a good choice, shows that the game has content and not just "VS-clone on the same map all the time". I agree that it should have showed more of the gags like the sword swallowing scene to showcase it's not "just" a gameplay focused game but also has a cast of lovable characters, but again given the quality of the game I don't think it would have made a difference. Marmoreal is a game that should have released with 3 characters in 2018 instead of 6 characters in 2024 in my opinion, scope creeped too much for an early access version.

is there a way of getting a triplanar map result in the UV space, like it's a traditional texture?
the problem with the triplanar thing is that it relies on blender's shader editor, rather than just being a regular image texture like on the PS1, which is what I'm after
also I don't know if this triplanar shit works outside of blender itself, but the results are so much better than what I can do manually

ouch.
I could see this being "the reason" if you were already sedentary or sickly as a child and early teenager. for an active kid anything that doesn't put you in the hospital heals on its own at that age. the body is full of HGH when you're 10 years old. even if you were already weak as fuck I would still assume it's at least a combination of things. you probably had some structural weakness (muscle imbalance, bad posture) in that area already and that's why getting hit by that ball is so memorable. it exposed your weakness. I think that's more likely than everything being perfect and then getting thrown out of whack for life by one injury at an age where injuries heal quickly. this is not to discount that the psycho with the football did lasting damage! I'm not trying to gaslight you here. but whatever you do, don't frame it as "something happened when I was 10 so now I can't fix this pain decades later". that would be the worst path to take.
anecdotally, I tweaked my back 14 years ago and I've been essentially pain-free* for 7+ years now, so I know first hand how pain issues can nag one for years but also that they can be treated to the point of being almost forgotten, years after the damage was done.

as your doctor I prescribe half an hour of walking at a moderate to high pace, AT LEAST TWICE A WEEK. what is moderate to high pace? you should feel a bit out of breath for most of that half hour and your calves should feel 'heavy' in the first few minutes. while you walk look at far away objects in front of you, this will naturally lead to good head and neck posture over time. lastly, the one time you should walk slowly is downhill. control every step, no stumbling forward with the aid of gravity, you will wreck your stiff knees. this is medical advice.

*no back pain for 360+ days every year

I made a walk cycle. I want to have it repeat so I can see how it looks. It's a 60 frame loop.
changing frame range in the editor was wrong, it's the global frame range for all animations. but setting a custom frame range and marking cyclic doesn't change anything.
tutorials say to use the graph editor but there has to be a better way to go from frame 60 to frame 0 without resetting the animation. is there?

I was more active as a kid. A kick like that by a 40 year old psycho that works out would've injured his own kid but I doubt he'd have kicked it anywhere near as hard if it was his kid in my place. It's possible that it's just my sedantary lifestyle but then these types of pangs have been common even as teenager so idk what they really are as I know others who get the exact same issue, like a cramp. But a cramp like this makes me hyper anxious when I can only breathe in shallowly.

But yeah I should become more active. Think I'll hold off on applying for laborious jobs for the time being.

it's about making a game
a game engine is just a generalized toolset

they're just using different tools

Real life crabs pull each other down in the bucket not out of malice but because they think they're helping each other. In the wild, they pull on each other to help each other climb over obstacles, but they're too stupid that this becomes counter-productive while inside a bucket. Giving out undeserved praise to games like Marmoreal is therefore very much the real "crabbing" of agdg.

What if the player had to map the procedurally generated landscape themselves? Sorry! I'm just not gonna use it okay? Uh, I know, I know, I'm supposed to get ADDICTED to your drag-n-drop editor and listen to the army of mouth pieces telling me that engine dev is just too hard, but, uh, I don't know how to tell you this but, I just you Love2D or SDL or Allegro and I don't care?
Ahhhh, yeah, really, all I need is texture drawing, shader support, input handling, audio devices, window drawing, and that's kind of it? The rest of it is kind of just basic programming isn't it? And if I really need an editor, I don't know, I'll just make one I guess? Lol.

Ah, look, don't take it too hard! I bet you'll get loads of youtubers and nodevs who'll become totally dependent on your product so that when your rug pull them years down the line with a 'runtime fee' for an engine that won't fix basic things!Godot is next lol

The map is already generated but is persistant. So if the player leaves town west then a new map tile is generated but then it will be like that for the rest of the game. The player would be made to color in a map themselves they wouldn't get one automatically and maybe towns would ask for maps to resource nodes or something. That calls into question though was map making just invented or something but maybe I could just say well the world is REALLY REALLY BIG.

Guys please help me out here
Say I have 50 houses on the map (unique objects, not instanced prefabs)
Each of them needs to be tracked and accessible in a consistent manner (i.e. no programmatically finding and putting them into a list or array with inconsistent order) from the Game Manager script
Their reference in the Game Manager also needs to persist through scene changes, so no manual referencing in the editor as I'm fairly sure Unity doesn't preserve those through unloads and reloads
How do I do this?

DontDestroyOnLoad for the game manager if you wanna use a singleton or static instance
you can also use scriptable objects for stuff like this. they're persistent at runtime, but will reset when the game is closed (in a build)
there are ways to save changes to scriptable objects.
or a combination of a manager class, plus scriptable object. or you can use inheritance or whatever.
scriptable objects are pretty nice, you can do a lot with them. most people see them as data containers, but you can execute code and even do coroutines, async/await, and stuff like that in them.

basically spend some time looking for possible solutions, then figure out which will work best for you.
you could also do some sort of constructor, so that way they're cached when you need them.

Thought about it but it's important that each house starts in a consistent condition (color, population, etc.) and that that condition can be accessed from anywhere in the game and is compatible with a save system.
I could make a generic "house" prefab that will be assigned a script with it's information, but that wouldn't solve the problem of tracking them all at runtime.
>>491908905
I'm trying to avoid keeping them loaded, I want to be able to have them in a scene, have them all referenced in the Game Manager, unload the scene, reload it, and have the Game Manager keep those references, without some awful shit like giving them all unique names then having the Game Manager search for each one by name every time the scene loads.
>>491909436
Hadn't thought about scriptable objects, but I think I'd still run into the same problem of reloading a scene meaning all the references it's storing no longer point towards the objects, meaning I'd have to programmatically assign them all with something like finding by name.

I guess the simplest I can explain it is this: I want to put a Smith's House and a Jones' House in a scene, unload the scene, have important information saved so that the Game Manager knows smithHouse is yellow even when the scene is unloaded (scriptable objects could do this), reload the scene, and have the Game Manager's GameObject smithHouse still point to the right object

>not making your own music with FL Studio or Reaper (both free)
>not doing all of the voices yourself
it's like you don't want to make a game and instead feel like being bitch.

music is easy. you have 12 notes to pick from, and then you decide which key...suddenly you're down to 5 usable notes (pentatonic)
then for rhythm, you just divide things by 4. and put the kick drum somewhere, and the snare somewhere else... maybe some hi-hats in between.
the lower notes will play at around the same time the kick drum plays, then after a low note you'll do some doobly doops with the high notes.
this is called "call and response"

for voices. get a microphone, and plug your nose for one character. put a piece of cloth over the mic for another character. record in a bathroom bath-tub for another.

you're literally so lazy that it hurts to read your post. you're even so lazy that you you think the only way to do things is to hire people or use AI.
that's how lazy you are.

i want to make a racing game and i have a block, this is in unity
i want this game to be arcadey, so if someone hits a wall dead on, i want the player to be able to just keep "driving" forward into a wall, and turning, and the car will still turn slowly and eventually just drive away along the wall
i'm using unity's physics system and so far i'm using a simple box, obviously what i described is impossible with this setup. what direction should i take, are there any tutorials on this maybe?

You can do voice acting yourself. There is a lot of software for it and it's mostly attempting different accents. You can edit a lot after you record the base voice lines. Either way, most VAs are very expensive and 90% of the time unless you are doing a certain type of game, you can get away with animal crossing noise effects, generic voice lines, or having none at all and rely on sound effects for the text.

For music, it really depends on the game you are making, but most people can use pad for atmosphere with a drum beat and get away with it.

if i understand correctly, you could introduce a data asset like HouseDefinition that is saved in a dictionary using the house's identifier (generate it with the prefab name for example). this dictionary would be in a singleton HouseManager or GameManager script attached to a gameobject that doesn't destroy on scene change.

Like so

Dictionary<string, HouseDefinition> houseDefinitions = new();

and then, within each HouseDefinition

public class HouseDefinition
{
private GameObject housePrefab;
public GameObject housePrefab => housePrefab;

public GameObject HouseInstance {get; set;}

public GameObject HouseInformation {get; set;}
}

HouseInformation would then contain the relevant information for the house's attributes that you would want to save when the house is not in play, kept separate from the prefab and its instance. when you need to load the house into play (for the first time, or whenever), you'd put it in the HouseInstance attribute using the HousePrefab prefab instance, then save the HouseInformation data on it. then when you don't need the house instance anymore, you'd save all the relevant data back into the HouseInformation class and you'd destroy the house gameobject instance.

you can also easily save data this way for when the game is off, by serializing that HouseInformation data into a save file of some kind

the HouseInformation would be its own class, like

Congrats buddy! Even if you don't get the sales that you want just be proud that you released something. That puts you ahead of 99% of us.

While an interesting concept in theory,
A)this is an absolutely HORRENDOUS way of getting around loneliness
B)chatbots have ruined 4chan and one look at /v/ or /pol/ is proof enough
C)the purge last night was apparently caused because people were talking about fed bots and the NYT's connection to the feds in /v/

So, how the fuck do you come up with puzzles?
Currently coming up with a maze game ala Chip's Challenge. I'm trying to figure out how you'd design such levels.

Any Godotbros know why setting the Timescale to -1 doesn't reverse the animation anymore? It worked in 4.1 but in 4.3 it doesn't work anymore.

Thats what I mean by deserializing and serializing them back
