did a lot of optimization stuff so that now I can run a game with 32 cars without any fps drops. the sneaky performance drain was the trail renderers I was using for skid marks etc.. they dropped the game down to like 10fps.

See, that's the benefit you get from making your own art or having one artist make your art instead of buying assets.

When I see a DingoDev game, I can tell by how the characters are made, that it is a DingoDev game.

premade assets, never ever.

This mostly does what I want, I guess my main issue is that the house objects themselves will be static in terms of number and location so it feels like a hassle to try to programmatically generate and link them as opposed to just being able to place them down in editor and give them an entry in some sort of hardcoded dictionary that'll innately have references upon startup and keep them through scene loads, instead of finding them again every time.
Maybe I'm just being retarded. Appreciate the help though.

Please no.

>nerds sink 5,000 hours into it
>Mordhau comes out
>5,000 hour Chivalry nerds dominate
>Chivalry II comes out
>10,000 hour Mordhau+Chiv nerds dominate
Rocket League is an actual esport, the last thing you want is to log into a fun car combat game on day one, join a lobby and then some 30,000 hour SSL RLCS pro player immediately double flip resets your car into the ground while shooting you in the face with a rocket launcher.

Although having such a large playerbase that could easily transfer their skills over to this game would probably be in the dev's interest, though he'd have to implement skill-based matchmaking so that all the new players don't just get filtered, and that's something AAA studios can't even get right.

If you're using anything with C#, you can basically serialize all existing objects and do a state dump. It's crude and ineffective, but it works.
Core stuff like position, buffs, time, money, etc are worth saving. Things like map data are not.

Easy Save is one of the better assets you can buy. It's lightweight, flexible and useful for almost any game. By using it, you will understand how a well-designed saving system is structured, as well. I am now working on a non-Unity side project and my attempt at a saving system is not far off from a 1:1 recreation of ES3.

Just created this game idea, feel free to steal it and make it better

a newspaper editor is working to write a story on a corporation polluting the town's river
at the end of act 1 we reveal that someone's about to publish news of his affair (so that's the family done, wife wanting a divorce)
act 2 / 3 is finding out who wants to expose him, all while he races to expose the corporation

any idea can work, if you have game design fundamentals.

Your idea could work by example if you put the winning condition as river pollution lowering beyond a certain point.
And the lose condition something like corporation being allowed by the goverment to not have any legal consequences.

Then you could use a worker mechanic from worker board games, to gain evidence as photos and reports of dead fishes.

The dificulty could be from managing your time, similar to animal crossing, and the fact your workers have a limited number of actions.

Plus the company could sent enemy workers to put issues with your workers.

I think your idea has more potential if you make it a team animal crossing JRPG type of game, and make the MC being the editor of the newspaper.

I'm not sure if you mean literal damage, but in my case I've been jerking off 3-4 times a day for the past 20 years and I've damaged by dick so badly over time that it bends to the left at over 45 degrees. Suffice to say I've also had death grip syndrome for years, which has only led to me jerking off even more aggressively and causing even more tissue damage.

NTA but good fucking luck, and I mean that in a genuine, non-sarcastic tone. Making a Portal-like is hard. All of the Portal-likes I've seen pop up over the years fall into one of two categories:
>they think they can drop the story/worldbuilding/character elements entirely and end up with a super boring puzzle game based around a single gimmick where you just click buttons in first person over and over
or
>they try way too hard to imitate what Portal did well and end up creating what's basically a Portal fan-game with a few mediocre puzzles that mostly serve as filler content to bring you from one quirky character soundbite to the next.
The latter is probably worse than the former, since the former can at least be enjoyed by puzzle autists even if it's boring to anyone else. Again, good luck.

I'd say we're trying to thread the latter option. It's not a puzzle autist game because I don't really like puzzle autist games (I never beat Stephen's Sausage Roll..). But I also hate neo-Portal writing attempts with test subjects and AI etc etc. I don't know if we can ever not feel a little similar, in that we are trying for a fun story with surprising things, but I like to think it's different enough to feel like it justifies its existence. There's also NO narrator/witty guide. Thanks for the wishes anon!

I doubt a lot of this knowledge is even needed for gamedev when you just need to grab the formula online, slap it in, and adjust it as needed. Oh and some are already set up in the engine of choice so it's just adjusting the values rather than even having to do a larger set of work like the former might require.

I saw this in my discovery queue and played the demo. I uninstalled it very quickly. Here's why.
The game is obviously ugly, but it's okay if it's fun. You begin in an extremely uninteresting area and have to talk to people you don't care about and do a boring fetch quest. Then you have an extremely uninteresting combat tutorial.
I was already bored within 15 minutes. Maybe the real combat is better? I don't know, but the demo combat was incredibly dull. The description says it's a tactical RPG, but most of the demo I played was reading text I didn't care about instead of playing a game.
Then the setting. I don't relate to spics in the desert. There's nothing interesting about them. Plenty of characters to talk to, and no one to care about. Nothing compelling.

So what's left? An ugly game, with a brown color palette, about beaners, with the same boring combat as Transistor basically. Absolutely nothing about it made me want to play it, even for free.

it was deprecated because Unity didn't want to pay Enlighten any more, so they tried to make their own GI solution but they failed, so then they had to extend with Enlighten to avoid a big outrage. but of course the whole time the Unity employees were avoiding doing anything with (the existing) realtime GI. just a huge waste of potential and time.

Unity 2019.2, built-in render pipeline, Deferred Renderer although Forward looks the same, just runs a bit worse for this particular scene. the reflections are a second camera in Forward mode.
the water is Crest (free version, I think you can still find it on github).
the GI is the old "realtime GI" solution Unity had starting in something like 5. so completely stock. it "precomputes" lighting into a bunch of textures similar to traditional lightmaps and those maps are then updated when you move the sun or change its color or change the skybox, anything that would affect the indirect lighting in the scene. and it costs very little performance.
also over it I've got Amplify Occlusion running, another asset you may have trouble finding now. it was made free at some point and later removed from the asset store, similar to Crest. still the best AO solution for Unity except maybe some raytraced shit in HDRP that I wouldn't know about.

So if I used 2019.4 LTS I could use this then, right? Not like the newer versions really bring much to the table. Feels more like an engine that constantly updates because employee's are making excuses for why they should keep their jobs. Sort of like how Google and Microsoft get worse, "updates" more like excuses to keep their jobs rather than just maintaining one version for long periods of time while making it bug free rather than adding half baked and broken features

Doesn't fit any market aesthetically or thematically. For tactical games the only ones doing real numbers right now are gritty "Slav Sims" like Wartales or Battle Brothers, or XCOM / Jagged Alliance-likes which must have guns in them. That art style and setting is anathema to the audience.

Why are you using an old screenshot like that?
I blame the publishers. It took hours before they received their first 10 reviews, causing a slow start. And sure, it's not the most typical game that would do really well on Steam, but they have a great positive/negative review ratio. The game is still selling quite well, but I think they would have loved to see that $100K after two days and not two weeks.

The player, the enemies, the NPCs, even the UI elements are all squares. They are all the same shape and size, the only distinguishing features are color and texture. Your monotonous design makes your game not only uninteresting and unappealing, but unreadable as well.
There are infinitely many polygons you can use, you don't have to just use squares.

There's a crab/schizo/whatever you want to call him who's been posting here for years who trolls through the new section on Steam every day screenshotting games with low review counts just hours after they release. He's done this so often for such a long time that he's actually unknowingly posted a couple of games that eventually went on to be successful. You may occasionally see people posting his Backpack Battles screenshot from time to time to mock him as that game went on to get thousands of reviews (his screenshot showed it with something like 14). People would give ass pats for games with high review counts and would shit all over the game if it had a low review count. Actual game quality withstanding. All anon did was open this general to the truth.

Should I be counting stuff that doesn't feel like gamedev towards my gamedev hours?

Working on designing another menu but was unsure how I should design it. So I stopped pplaying in the engine and started writing down my thoughts on how it should be designed/look while fitting the theme. Eventually I got a great idea and drew it on my phone to explain what I wrote. It's the likely menu design I will go with. Would you count that as gamedev?

Marmoreal may be only two hours long, but it's the most kino two hours you'll ever see. Good animation and cinematography with above average character designs. Remember folks, quality > quantity. Marmo spent 10 years making 2 hours of kino, not 200 hours of trash.

it's also less like monkey ball and more like marble blast, marble it up, and pac n roll. you control the ball not the stage.

pretty sure genuine word of mouth has more of an effect than a number on a screen. if a real person tells you credibly that he likes this game you'd be more likely to buy it than if it happens to have a good user review score. a BAD user review score would be a disaster, no doubt. but whether it's very good or just good and whether there are 50 reviews or 10 I don't think makes a big difference. lots of games have stellar reviews but just aren't my genre, you know? to buy a game I need to be convinced it's for me.

Depends on how people count it. If this is your salary for developing it then yes this is definitely normal. I don't think most dev's even count their time/salary for themselves.

If I counted a salary for myself my game would be a total cost of $200k in salary + somewhere around $2.5k in paid stuff.

>talent is genuinely a meme
This is a fucking retarded take for anyone whose actually put in the effort into something they are not good at. Yes the majority of people fail because they don't try, no that doesn't mean talent doesn't exist. Talent can take form on in how far ahead you are of everyone without training, how quickly you learn and what your natural limits are. I'm naturally good at programming. That doesn't mean I was better than someone who is untalented but tried for a 1 year. It does mean that i had surpassed them after 3-4 months of learning and trying. My art skills started off began 1 standard deviation below the average, after years of art classes and trying harder than most people i was smack dead average.
I've been both the person who didn't try and was better than almost everyone and the person tried harder than everyone else. Talent exists.
>>
>>491953305
I don't think it works that way. Steam's algorithm only holds games back if they have BAD reviews. anything over "mixed" or some bad category like that is treated the same by the algorithm. last I heard number of reviews doesn't matter, it's just a proxy for how many copies you sold. what matters for the algorithm is how many copies you ACTUALLY sell.

AFAIK, you need some minimum number of reviews (some say it's 10, but Steam hasn't confirmed the exact threshold) before a game is given ANY organic visibility (i.e. home page or discovery queue views), after which it goes to numbers like purchase per store page view (which having some reviews certainly helps to increase later purchase).

sorry for the compression.
attached is the almost complete version of the painting shader I had posted in a previous thread.
it's close to done, basically what I'll need to do now is optimize so it can run on the lowest of low end hardware.

In the video, you can see two cats, I have one using the standard URP Lit shader to show as a comparison.
Also a bonus of an outline effect I'm working on (it's not too noticeable, I have it as a more subtle effect) as well as a hatched shadows shader I am working on.

Then next I can start to make models of my own, rather than use the testing models I downloaded.
Finally, I'm going to make a game that will be with this aesthetic. I hope I can think of good ideas to add, since I have only been working on shaders the last few months.

my question to you, /agdg/ is this:
do you like the shadow banding effect? where the shadows form as "growing blobs" as the shadows become darker and darker? (this can be seen on the yellow van bus.
thats the part i'm most unsure about.

- 2 hours on paths
Thought for now is that exploring a path is done instantly for a cost and if a node is discovered that shares a path with another discovered node it's explored for free.
Lingering questions:
- Should it be that a building can't be built on a node if that node isn't connected to another adjacent node? That is, maybe there could be an 'outpost' building that's just a cheap throwaway so the player has a meaningful limitation
- Should paths need to be worked by a meeple for a turn? This would be another meaningful use of resources, especially when workers have nothing else to do at buildings
- How to deal with overlapping paths? My current thought Is just modify my drunken walk impl. to not allow non-planar graphs, but I guess intersecting paths could be possible? Probably over complication, even if the nodes spatially being close, but unconnected could cause player confusion.

We're 3X at the moment. Goal for demo day is to get to 4X, hopefully before the weekend so I can just use labor day to crush content for demo day and get low-hanging fruit out of feedback.

Games are made out of code, and inverting a binary tree is extremely simple. You shouldn't "know" how to do it, but you should be able to very easily figure it out, because the things you'll have to figure out in your game are orders of magnitude harder. I'm serious: if you struggle with conceptualizing how you might invert a tree, your optimal path is to stop everything and practice programming.
Learning to drive and then driving somewhere is faster than immediately setting off on a walk to there.

im not going for water color, it's too difficult to get that looking good at my skill level. maybe some day
for now, i'm just leaving it as a generalized digital painting styled thing. since the blobby shadow areas aren't too dark, it can be used to affect how strong the brush stroke appearance is, then based on how dark the brush strokes are in that spot, it can change the color of them
By changing the brush texture or gradient texture (for color replacement), it can get different stylizations, but thats about it. Also the way the shadow banding blobs look can get changed too but not by much otherwise it looks all fucked up and retarded
i have outlines on there that are based on color difference, so that's kind of used for an accent. but its too hard to see in the webm, i'm still figuring out how to get them to look how they actually are supposed to look like
but yeah, for now i won't change it much to be more like a true water color, or true oil painting style. for now it's at the point of good enough, so I'll just spend time making it look a little better to where it's like "ok, this is a cool style" rather than "oh? just digital watercolor? digital oil paint?"

That's kind of a general question. If you're self aware then that at least helps. I guess one tip I would give would be to not overcomplicate things. Even if your game is kind of complicated in nature and there's a bigger narrative you want to tell, you probably shouldn't try to convey too many things you're not confident in explaining via dialogue. Make your NPCs simple and one-note. Don't overcompensate in text when you want to tell something to your player. Let the player experience the world instead.

yeah no. even if he ignored them they'd probably blow a gasket look at them trying to push eric into add pronouns. another youtuber bends the knee to wokeism probably for attention since a lot of them seem to act like they're on the news and whatever they say is fact, regardless of whether or not it is. all you have to do is make a game that's so popular that no amount of angering the woke crowd can ruin you at all. that crowd will certainly get mad at me but man it will feel so good knowing they're mad and there isn't a thing they can do to force me to add woke stuff into MY GAME.

I'm so glad that I accidentally worked on developing multiple different skills for development. I wanted to be an artist so I got a drawing tablet, and stuff. I don't really think as a solo dev I can get good at art, programming, and other things all at once though. Art kind of depends on skill you were born with in terms of how much potential you have. It's hard to be an indie game developer, I guess.
>>
>>491980243
>Art kind of depends on skill you were born with
this is true, but you can fake it
the main thing separating a good artist from a shit one is having a good eye for beauty. everything else is just technical skill. if you spend enough time observing good art you can form a sort of autistic logic-based approach to determining whether people will like something. not as good as natural talent but good enough to make a game.
