Neither. Spend a few weeks learning Python or JavaScript with pygame/threejs for example those languages have better learning resources and are easier to learn fundamental coding concepts with. Then jump into coding with game engines. Ignore the tards who make sweeping comments about what tech stack is superior, they out themselves as narrow minded, beginner level devs when they do that.

The right tool depends on the project. I've used unreal and unity for years, but now I mostly stick to godot. There are good reasons to use Unreal/Unity in some cases. Jobs/team projects/graphics/asset stores/licensing to name a few. It's up to the developer to pick the right tool for each job.

The game is now scheduled to release on Newgrounds at 9:00am on Thursday and the soundtrack art is done. All that's left is a couple last minute music changes I'm waiting on my composer for. because a state machine isn't checking conditions all the time, and if you wanted to be extreme, you technically don't need conditionals at all to change states

in a state machine you have a state and the machine persists in that state, period. there's no conditions to check, it's just in a state. you can have conditionals to switch states (and oftentimes you do), but it's not mandatory - you could switch on collision, after some time passed, on triggers, event callbacks, etc

you decouple the behaviour from the entity, which means you can just have the same state on whatever entity that needs it - so it's easier to reuse code
if you have an entity that is stateful you can reasonably expect things from it, like events or, well, a state - but also fields that are tied to the state
i'm inclined to say they're more performant
it's easy to add a new state, because they're separate entities
i'll argue it's easier to maintain and switch states
and so on and so forth

however, if your game has entities with like 100 lines of code, then it's a moot discussion. an enemy that can stand around, attack and die doesn't need a state machine, just like a script that writes shit to a database every other hour doesn't need an ORM

Uhh yeah. I was working on icons needed for UI to showcase the special scenarios. Was in the bathroom earlier when in an instant I saw the design within my mind. It was beautiful. I'm having self doubts as to whether or not certain genres could still be fun like turn-based games since I sometimes hear it's "outdated" format. But then you suddenly get games like Core Keeper getting over 27,000 reviews despite checking all the boxes for one of the most saturated genres ever. That having survival elements like crafting, pixel art etc.

Can confirm, my fat fingers randomly drop input (which is why I'm double-tapping movement orders in that video, single tap is normally enough but sometime not because fuck you). I should also have made the icons at least 50% bigger than they were in the PC, they were a bit impractical to tap quickly there.
Worst part was to have a completely separate input-handling script tho. I hate having two classes doing the same shit, but touch controls are just different enough from mouse clicks that you can't really translate the control scheme 1-to-1.
Second worst part was that the editor is fucking useless at letting you guess what will actually be displayed and how well it will perform. So much tiny details in a shader/material can tank your framerate completely on the actual phone while the editor in android mode has no problem with it. Also got an insane amount of shit simply not displaying at all, although that's was probably specific to the BatchRendererGroup API being already finicky in a normal situation.

So yeah, I hate mobiledev.

I believe in the principle, that if your idea is 'released' you lose some internal motivation to finish it. However, every time I've completed a project, it's almost always had some form of daily logging, posted somewhere for accountability.
I've also had instances of 'man I'll totally work on this game after this jam/demo day', but totally lost interest after the fact. This is, in part, a deflation because the idea was realized, but looking back, the ideas also weren't that great. A soft-release can make you realize you're working on a bad idea and allow you to let go, while still finishing something.

Now I'm trying to make the next step and actually have a game release, but I'm not telling anyone a bit about things that aren't implemented.
