Shiki and Akiha both loved each other, but they were both too hesitant too approach each other because of their familial relationship and the taboo nature of their love. But you could see their passion for each other in all of the scenes they had with each other. The tragic tinge that saturates the entire route also really adds to the atmosphere imo. You have Akiha hiding Shiki's past, and also her struggle to stay alive and sane due to having only a half a life force and being half oni.Then you have Shiki whose latent Nanaya instincts are crying out for Shiki to slay this woman that he loves. And he's constantly fighting this urge. And it's like a Hyde and Jekyll situation where you're not sure if he's gonna snap and gut her like he did with Arcueid in the Near Side of the Moon routes. Both of these concepts tie in masterfully to the end, when Shiki has to confront the fact that he has half of Akiha's life force, and that because of this, only one of them will be able to live. Meaning they'll never be able to live together happily. Which is doubly tragic because they've finally embraced themselves as lovers
