Not saying Gear has done this perfectly though, take the A.B.A/Justice matchup for example. A.B.A has unique tools like slide and her good movement/buttons in MM to get in but Justice's unique overwhelming zoning doesn't mesh well with that making the matchup very unfair. You see a similar thing on a larger and more problematic scale with HC in Strive, his unique zoning makes it so many characters' anti-zoning tools simply don't interact with/are entirely trumped by his tools. But remember that most matchups and characters aren't like this. HC is an example of 1 but the rest of the cast across different Guilty Gear games is 2, it's not about uniqueness vs un-uniqueness but rather how each unique ability interacts with each other- and in the end balance comes down to this. Therefore being unique is not a problem in and of itself, it doesn't create unbalance. Simply bad balance creates unbalance.

>>498480118I've gone back and forth on how hard he is, when I started playing him I thought he was actually easy because, though he appears to be the kind of character with a high skill floor but when once you reach that skill floor it becomes easy to steamroll with him, he's actually not because he's not very technical and you don't need to spend too long on him to get to the point of just spamming cubes even if you may not be doing it as efficiently or fast as the best players, you can still get to the point of making his offense strong easy enough which makes him seem quite easy because that offense is very strong.I've found him more difficult the more I play him though because when you start out with him it's easy to just lump his spells together by their category, like all projectile cubes feel like more or less the same thing, but that becomes harder to do as you fight better players and you start feeling yourself needing to utilize the different spell's specific strengths more, which in turn is more for you to think about which also makes it difficult to focus on actually dealing with your opponent as well. I've even seen moments from Gobou or other top players where the opponent's approach seems obvious but he gets hit anyway, and I have to imagine it's just because he's so preoccupied with trying to get his hand to where he wants it to be that he fails to think about how to respond to his opponent too, juggling those two things becomes increasingly more difficult the more you play him for me. He also has his fair share of rough matchups that can be difficult to deal with. His singleplayer game is still extremely strong at the end of the day and that makes the character strong in general, but my experience with him has been that he's surprisingly easy to pickup and surprisingly difficult past that point. He's far from the hardest character ever or whatever people were saying when he released, but I think he's tough enough.
