>>
>>498615243
I personally find it cringe that people make bad art for their games like N64 and low poly instead because I believe most of them are doing it because they think the retro style seems easier than doing something modern, but low poly and retro styles themselves can look good sometimes. It's the same with pixel art. If you are doing it out of insecurity about your own artistic skills or because you don't want to spend time on making nice looking art your game will be ugly, but if you are doing it because it genuinely aligns with your artistic vision then you're fine.
>>
>>498563856
>so I deleted the game and closed my itch account
Why do this though? You could leave it up, it might get popular later and even if it doesn't why delete it? I've seen an indie dev or two who do this and it makes no sense, it doesn't cost anything to maintain.
>>
>>498615579
What if you have a lot of nostalgia for N64 games and happen to also like the fact that developmental-wise it puts less stress on you as the artist/programmer/designer?

define "low poly"

if you mean like some stacked cubes, then okay I guess

>>
>>498617539
??? no? right is low poly, mid poly isn't even a real term and would probably refer to some vague definition of a cinematic model, and high poly would be what they used to bake all the texture information for the low poly model

I know fake gamedevs have a hard time getting this through their brains but low poly does not specifically refer to minecraft or ff7 characters
>>
>>498617946
There's no point in refering to professional terms when most people here are solodevs with little to no experience.

Are there any resources on making skyboxes? It feels like now that hardware is able to render distant objects, the art of the skybox has kinda started to get lost, even though they look so much better.

Also, in this context, by skybox I don't actually mean the sky but vistas in the distance that aren't actual part of the game world. I don't know if you actually call that a skybox or something else. Please educate me.
Anyway, it seems like the best of these have some actual layering and stuff going on.
>>
>>498617946
low poly and high poly can be used in different contexts, you're not wrong in the way you're using them but we are referring to style which is roughly categorized by polycount

when I say sculpting I mean sculpting something that actually looks good and for games baking it down to a lower poly version as is the modern workflow.
by low poly I mean the boxy models people use for nostalgiabait retro style games and in 90% of cases feels like it doesn't contribute and just looks lazy and ugly.

Made a lot of progress... on stuff that's barely visible when playing.
Currently considering making ranged units able to use indirect fire (and shoot further than their own vision range) by default, since them having actual LoS requirement and thus body-blocking each other make them kind underwhelming in squad-to-squad direct combat.
Also introduced (in)accuracy for ranged units.

you can render them in many programs. the best solutions are probably actual terrain generators like terragen. E-on VUE is a really old program that I wouldn't recommend but it used to be popular for big studios to make skyboxes in the earlier days of CG and recently got made completely free. You can do them in blender and maya too just set up a panoramic camera.
>>498619061
Download ifsrenderer. It's very good for making space scenes and abstract renders that aren't ludicrously heavy on the PC and is totally free. Here's a low res version of a scene I made in it a few days ago. This one isn't panoramic but it's easy to render it as that.

As opposed to the fear that some crackhead will steal or destroy your possessions or stab you as you sleep buried in garbage in an alleyway... I dunno man I think it's probably better not to be homeless.

first of all, blend the bottom of objects placed in the ground with the ground texture beneath it. Fix your broken ugly leaf material. Why is there even a palm growing in a desert with no water nearby???????????????

it's the diversislop character and his ridiculous name that ruin the shot, nothing else.

imo the UI looks OKAY, definitely better than the sterile black and white rectangles in most games nowadays. at least it has *a* color (coffee brown). also the game mechanics described on the right sound fun enough, assuming they are robust and somewhat balanced.

I'm afraid so buddy.

My theory is that agdg behaves like women, if they see a game that doesn't attack their ego or make them feel threatened they'll shower it with two-faced complements like "soul", much like how a group of girls will psyop a fat girl into thinking she's a 10 because they all know there's no actual threat there. But the moment an actual baddie shows up they get all bitchy and gossipy. You can see this with 'inner circle' shit and people responding to any semi-competently made game webm with 'slop' or 'asset flip'. It's pure female behaviour because agdg and gamedev in general is saturated with weak beta males and/or men who wish they were women.

I encountered a problem which I have no fucking idea how to solve.
My terrain is based on smoothed voxels because it allows for overhangs and caves that standard heightmap terrain doesn't have. It also allows the player to directly edit the terrain, which they will be doing a lot to dig and build. but how the fuck do I solve water? if the player can edit the terrain and there's just random cave openings the water would need to realistically flow but that's hard as fuck to make and I don't think there is a way to do that in 3d, large scale and realtime

yes, it is. the webm sucks sadly because of the filesize restrictions.
i think doing a full culling system like that is a bit too much for me, i'm not a particularily good programmer.
i've heard about limiting the animator refresh rates based on distance, it seems like the most viable option for me. it's just sad that they didn't implement such thing out of the box, there are even paid assets that do this kind of stuff but sadly i can't really afford them at the moment.
>>
>>498636929
the mass of units isn't really something i plan to implement as a core feature, it was just a test. the game's a mix between an RTT and an autobattler, i haven't quite seen anything like it yet and i've also heard from a few people that the controls are great and easy to pick up.

Right, it's amateur. If you actually want to make money you need to look up game sales, find games that make a million or two, and you have to make your game as polished and full as that, if you have any hope of making a million or two. You can't compare yourselves to agdg which fail horrifically. With a few exceptions. But even looking at those exceptions, make a game as polished and full as them, it's not easy. And they clearly stand apart from the majority. vyddn

>it seems Unity's animators on each unit are the biggest bottleneck surprisingly
That's probably because animating a mesh is done by building a new mesh in the animated position, then sending it to the GPU as if it was a static mesh.
300 animated units mean building and uploading 300 times.
Unity has an option to do the building GPU-side (with ComputeShaders) instead of entirely CPU-side (although iirc it's still gimped by doing a full back-and-forth), might help to toggle it on.
Otherwise there isn't much solution bar LOD. Lower poly meshes mean faster building and uploading.
Setting the far models' animator to use 2 or 1 bones instead of the default 4 also reduce calculations, generally with no visible loss if they are far enough.

>>498636839
>Ask this anon for his secrets
I don't mind sharing, but going from Unity's default animator/skinnedmeshrenderer system to what I use is a massive step in autism and amount of work.
I did it because that's my game main gimmick, but I wouldn't advise it for a regular RTS.
There are a few plugins that seems to be able to do it for you (Rukhanka, notably) but I never used them so no idea how easy they are to setup.

someone pls explain to me why you would use unity over unreal engine.
seems like unreal engine is superior in every department, except for some people subjectively preferring c# over c++. Unreal even has node based blueprints too, which can really help.

I understand it if the reason is "china bad", but is there a practical reason? genuine question as I'm interested in making a game. is Unreal just way harder than unity maybe? I know unreal has a stuttering problem but that only seems to be a problem in games that really push your hardware.

added a flak cannon, which behaves differently from the other gun options in the game so far
the flak cannon creates an area-of-effect damage zone near the player's cursor instead of firing a projectile in the direction of the cursor

as more weapons are being added to the game each one is developing a role and personality
the current armament lineup is:

-> plasma cannon: the default loadout. medium firing rate, efficient to use, damage scales with player multipliers
-> machine gun: always does 1 damage, but spits out bullets at a rate of about 10 per second. good for boss killing because boss armor means they only take 1 damage anyway
-> lasers: these pierce through multiple targets and their cost scales with their damage
-> rockets: these are basically expensive glorified plasma cannons that deliver 8 plasma shots to a single location
-> flak: these area-effect cannons excel in quickly dispatching the lower-hp airborne threats that usually have higher mobility, or targets with a large hitbox

will probably end up adding another 2 or 3 weapon types to continue fleshing out the arsenal before early access launch

>How does Zbrush compare to Blender?
night and day difference, and i'm saying this as mostly a Blender apologist.

Blender lacks so many brushes and features that ZBrush has, so the end result always looks messy and lumpy in comparison. ZBrush has many features to mitigate those effects, whereas Blender does not.
just pirate ZBrush, for it's purpose it's the best tool around. the only downside is that it has the worst UI i have ever seen in a 3D program, but you can get around that with patiencd.

Anyone here working on/has made a point-and-click? Preferably something more in line with old SCUMM games. What engine did you use?

I know there's a bunch of bespoke stuff like Adventure Game Studio, but it is pretty old and inflexible. Tools like Visionaire Studio seem better but are paid. I'm nowhere near clever enough to code something from scratch or even in a program like Godot, but I do have the ability to do all the art and writing for the project.

I'm using RTS in the large sense, never been a fan of the RTT/RTS separation.

>no base building and the only resource you're managing are your reinforcements
Pretty much the same for myself. Less out of wanting to be an RTT and more because I'm using elements from Warzone 2100's structure.

>what are you using for animating the units?
They are batch rendered as static meshes, and all animating is done directly inside the shader.
Animations are stored in textures, and BoneWeights need to be baked into the mesh's optional UV channels (as those are normally kept CPU-side so the shader wouldn't see them).

I studied it for my masters, it is fun, but the time it takes to create a pipeline you could make 10s of whatever your are trying to make. So I really don't think it is good for indies, makes a lot of sense if you are a big studio that will be using the pipeline for years and years.

Thanks, but would this approach work with individual units? It seems you're using crowd simulations where in my case i'm simulating unit AI behaviours individually. anyway, since i'm a codelet i'm probably just gonna stick to animator LODs, maybe even make some multi-threading compatible code for the distance checks for more performance
>>
>>498639856
Gonna crab for a moment here because Marmoreal and One Armed Bandit could have used this type of feedback before flopping, and you've already posted a trailer so I'm assuming this is meant to be a commercial product and not a personal hobby thing.
>LOOKS
This game looks bad. Visually, it looks like garbage in every webm (shit pixelart that's barely animated) look at the environment here, look at the tile set.
The first thing noticable about the art is that it appears low effort. It looks like this was done in a day. When I saw the trailer you posted, as soon as it cut away from the parallaxing background images and showed the gameplay there was a remarkably steep drop in quality that anyone who watches your trailer will notice.
>GAMEPLAY
I'm sure the appeal here is that you upgrade and get lots of particles and shit on the screen and feel powerful and accomplished but it looks really boring. You're not even having to dodge anything you just sit there and click where the enemies are. Braindead gameplay, I know this isn't a big deal since brainrot sells really well lately but I wouldn't even want to play a demo of this it looks absolutely boring.
That's all I've got. Consider yourself crabbed.
>>
>>498638557
a MOBA you mean? probably not, since youre commanding multiple units. for reference think of an extremely simplified version of this https://store.steampowered.com/app/7830/Men_of_War/
>>
>>498642913
honestly i think it looks fine, but id change the black inside the walls, maybe have it gradually turn darker when its closer to the edge of the screen
>>

>actual feedback
You should do this for every 'commercial release' game here.
>>
>>498640008
Visionaire is good but paid. It is cheap however and doesn't have subscription bullshit. Godot and Unity both have Adventure Game engines as well that are free for commercial use with credit.

Even so, the actual gameplay of a point and click is so simple with even no coding knowledge that you wouldn't really need any of these for anything except inventory and puzzles.

i am dirt broke
we're talking 200-300 a week dirt broke because i'm stuck at home for family reasons

How viable is it to invest learning game development as a small source of income in the long term if i'm an absolute nobody? The reason why i'm looking at this in general is because i remember liking messing with shit like rpg maker 2003 decades ago, both mario maker games, and so on but i know full well those are casual programs.

I gave programming a chance numerous times and I got fed up with it every time, so I know the answer is probably "don't bother", but it's worth an ask I guess.
>>
>>498644159
>too far to change the fundamental problems with this game (its ugly + boring)
There’s usually one simple fix to make a boring game enticing --- every enticing game is just one clever touch ahead of being boring ---- the trick is to find that one idea.
That being said I think the shield mechanic in AMAZOOM is pretty fun desu

It's a big question bro. With a whole lot of caveats. People make money in game dev from deving, and youtube channels talking about deving, and channels teaching to dev and asking for money. Your ability to stand out in any of these fields is up to your innate abilities. Your charisma, beauty, intelligence, industrious behavior.
>>
>>498644359
The most reliable money is in dead boring developer jobs. If gamedev can motivate you to get the skillset, then I guess…

Is there really a downside to releasing a game that sucks or is ugly? Putting a game on Steam is very cheap and even if no one buys it, if it's just your hobby then who cares, at least you might get some external feedback or make SOME money even if very little.
>>
>>498644957
Wouldn't even say its dead boring, depends on you and the workplace. I personally kinda like my job (mostly webdev, ERP). I might just be lucky that the people I work with are cool.
>>
>>498644359
You can make something cool with minimal coding experience depending on genre. Those genres however are also unlikely to make you a lot of money, like adventure games they are niche genres.
>>
>>498644984
For external feedback I would recommend DD.
As for making money, you will certainly not even recoup the steam listing fee.
>>
>>498645159
Yes, there is in fact more money in developer jobs that are NOT boring; but those are harder to find.
>>
>>498644359
Also do a mobile game if you end up doing games.
>>
>>498642793
>It seems you're using crowd simulations
Not really. Each soldier has it's own AI and can go do whatever the fuck it want anywhere.
The only crowd-ish behaviour are the formation's shape (square/line/etc), and is this just done just by giving each soldier as slightly offset target position when you click to move a squad somewhere.

>maybe even make some multi-threading compatible code for the distance checks for more performance
If you are in Unity, check Burst & Jobs (don't bother with their ECS API, even if a lot of the documentation try to make it look like they can only be used together).
It add some C-style constraints on C#, but in exchange you get some massive code performance boost and it's made for multi-threading.
My game would run at slideshow framerate without those two.

>2 pixelshart game from a fulltime gamedev
>3 years in devhell
>only got a demo out with a single level
people rightfully say that poonity bloat leads to non-shovelware games being stuck in devhell being it's an engine made to produce cheap asset flips and finetuning anything takes a lot of time but can we talk about very simple godot games taking years to finish?
>>
>>498645405

>>
>>498645794
He says he's been working on it on and off, that implies it is just a hobby game and that he isn't working on it full time and instead working on it every now and again.

IMO if he's not making any promises, isn't taking anyone's money, and isn't complaining, he can take as long as he wants. That's not a problem with Godot or anything.

If you can't pass an exam it's because you didn't learn. This might be because you didn't try hard enough, or because you have a disability, but either way if you can't do the test you're a loser.
I remember we had an Italian student who had done the first year or two of his education in Italy, and he bragged about being much more educated and intelligent than everyone else. We received our exam statics exam, and you could feel the humiliation radiating off of him as he slowly flipped through each page, reading the entire exam front to back, then silently stood up and left without so much as writing his name on it. He dropped out after that, kek.

Man, honestly watching a course on european warfare between 7-17 century was extremelly cool to get new ideas for my enemies.

Like the types of weapons they have, all really amazing new ideas.

Now I want to make my dificulty curve to be centered around each major warfare era.

Basically:
>Prehistory (mostly fist and kicks, stones, javalins, bows, maces)
>Ancient era (mostly greek phalanx, egyptian charriots, jew slingshots, chinese monks)
>Medieval era (armored knights, vikings using rounded shield with swords, warhammers, boxers, grapplers)
>Late Medieval (spanish tercios, carcacolas, landsknetch, gerndarmies, muskets, pikes)
>Napoleonic era (bayonets, early machine guns, canons)
>XX century (WWI and WW2)
>Final boss (Late XX century and XXI drone stuff)

This should be a nice dificulty spike for my arcade setting.

Maybe that just Unity import being retarded, but not only she has a bajillon bones that do nothing (that one is classic with IK system, but it's cranked to 11 here - there is like 12 duplicate arm/leg/spine/etc bones).
Also the bone that actually control the forearm is not one under the shoulder bone in hierarchy, which is apparently not solvable. Even when forcing it, it seems like half the forearm is controlled by some random other bone that I couldn't identify - so at best I managed to get weird noodle arms.
Maybe I'm retarded tho. I'm not used to have to troubleshoot humanoid models very far. Usually it's just a matter of correcting on two bones the auto-binding system got wrong. Here the auto-binding picked completely random shit (including hairs in some parts) and having to test manually which of the 12 duplicate bones is the one actually doing anything is a bit beyond me. No idea if I'm doing this the wrong way of if it's actually as borked as it look.

>(don't bother with their ECS API, even if a lot of the documentation try to make it look like they can only be used together).
i tried to get into that rabbit hole once, but i ended up just going "yeah nope" when i realized how deep that was. maybe when i get better at code i'll try to look at it again. getting stutf to work with JOBS and BURST was already a bit of a headache at the beginning but i kinda got the gist of it, i'm currently using it for target detection and it works very well.

working on my fps life sim game and weighing the pros and cons of doing inventory like they did in daggerfall/modern fallout, where everything needs to be manually picked up vs a regular fps where ammo is picked up as long as you have the gun to match it

On one hand most of the items i plan to make are just guns but on the other I want to use a real inventory system like in system shock 2

Maybe I should actually play system shock 2 for design education

I liked the beta version of it (0.5 or something), but the release version made everything 10 times more complicated for no real improvement, on top of making classic, non-ECS Unity components randomly bugs.
It doesn't even improve performances much compared to just Job/Burst.

>>
>>498652349
That's because understanding math and using math are two different things and not many people know how to teach the understanding part. Schools teach formula memorization without explanations, you're just remembering visual patterns at that point which are not very useful outside of the rigid question and answer format they give you.

Game dev isn't even about math, that's engine dev. Outside of knowing some trig, easing functions and basic vector operations, you really don't need math to make games. Knowing how to follow a flowchart and make a program out of it is 1000x more important.

The future isn't certain and nobody can tell you how your life will turn out. It's truly pathetic to see young people like you sapped of their spirit and ambitions, begging online anywhere people will listen to have their desires, experiences and thoughts processed like goyslop and for an answer to be given for them to obey.
If you take a business degree and don't get a good job, at least then it was anons fault cause you were just doing what he told you.
Fuck off retard, game dev is not for you because creativity comes from the soul (you are a husk with no hope)
You want a good job? Take a trade if you're in the first world. It's difficult for ten years then you can work in an office and more than your cuck friends with Masters in sociology. Suffer now or you can suffer now AND later. Most important takeaway here is throw in the towel on game dev and stop posting in this thread.

This cope gets tiring. Of course tiny glade is not a game. People are still playing StarCraft 26 years later. Without gameplay you might as well shart into a toilet for all the good it's gonna do you. Sure they made some money but with that player retention I don't see how they can sustain themselves with that pile of shit. Keep in mind it needs to pay for the development expenses + the living expenses of two people in probably some first world shithole. And that's on top of the fact that it's an extremely niche game that only women with a lot of disposable money would buy AND the fact that they already exhausted that target audience with the launch AND the fact that they intend and are expected to keep adding shit to the game for no additional profit

Most people here don't/can't make a level editor because they expect the game engine editor to be all they'll ever need while complaining about how much they hate it.

>how's your dev cycle going?
Current "cycle" is about tweaking everything from bottom to top.
I made an attempt at a strategic-level AI that would move troops around, defend/attack objectives, etc - all the shit needed so there is actually a game to play. It didn't go well, mostly because it had very little tool and infos to work with. So I have to revamp everything AI-related starting from the lower levels, so that each tier of AI get more options about what it can do and what it know - hopefully this way the strategic AI will be able to do more that just throwing its biggest squads at the nearest enemy.

Current objective for this week is to roughly copy-paste DoW1's stance system to replace my current mess of possible combat-related soldier behaviors.

It's always funny to see agdg having no clue that a game with good toon graphics, an original premise and basically the same concept as those dioramas kids make in school where they put bugs and some ferns inside a bottle would sell.

There's a lot of ideas that aren't about killing some dudes or killing imaginary monsters that are also cool comfy experiences.

Literally here are some cool ideas.

Those ships in a bottle, but maker.
Those racing games with RC cars toys.
Watching ants fight.
Making paper airplanes.
Flying kites.
Walking around a nice park looking at the scenery.
Making a bonsai.
Making a garden.
Lawning your moan.
Cleaning your room.
Going to shoop groceries.
Polishing shoes for money.
Recycling garbage.
Cleaning a street.
Cleaning a river of trash.
Game centering about mining and finding gold.
Game about studying and discovering bugs and plant species in the forest.
A fashion game.
A game about yoga.
A game about designing shoes and jewerly.
A game about having a haircut.
A game about owning a store.

A lot of people like a lot of things not normally considered "combat".

Original demo day was invaluable because it was a community of 30-40 devs who gave each other a lot of feedback. You reach the end of the 2010s and Covid and suddenly a lot of green newfaggots decide they can make games. /agdg/ demo counts spike drastically and just keep climbing. You start consistently getting Demo Days with 100+ participants. Nearly half of these "people" don't post in the thread or haven't posted in it in years. Sense of community erodes. Instead of the community-building event where you're excited to play your internet buddies' games now it's just another soulless broken system where everyone is trying to fuck everyone else over and get a lot of great feedback without ever bothering to leave good quality feedback on other games. People started coming in thinking they can exploit and game the community's high trust and that killed the cohesion. Now you're lucky if you get two good feedbacks in a single DD.
>>

>>498660713

>>
>>498660713
jokes on you, i didn't get two feedbacks even back then
>>
>>498660713
This entire situation is also the entire reason why it's important that /agdg/ should be a community instead of an impersonal hangout spot for losers, and why the second it lost its old qualities it completely lost its point. The community feeling meant that the participants had a stake in keeping this place clean and constructive. They had built it from the ground up and they realized just how valuable the constructive spirit is to feed the projects of the participants. However the problem is that the most competent talented and motivated people eventually leave because their qualities lead them to success which means that over time the only long-staying presences that are going to stick around are terminal bottom feeders (Marmo, cris, etc) who have zero constructive spirit and have no problem letting the general go to complete shit because they are not white and don't understand what preservation or conservation means. This is why agdg just naturally decays over time.

>>498660713
How new are you? There's more feedback than ever now because around the 40s, the threads started to realize that it would be nice to do feedback for not just the top games, but all the games. This is also around the point where Sober hadn't returned in over a year and so people started to take up streaming to fill in his absence. There's also nothing wrong with new members to the community. What an absurd position to hold. There's only a handful of people who submit to DD that aren't a part of the community. They're negligible. We have more real devs submit than people who want to sabotage DD.

Truthfully, Cris is in the top half of the developers here. Most of the people shitting on him are just mad that a retard has made far more progress than they ever will. That's mostly because they are cowards, afraid to even try, lest their sub-par results challenge their immense and fragile egos. So they just sit on the side lines of life, whining and crabbing.

I have been here for a long time and I have yet to see any benefits for this on any of my demos. My game is constantly ignored and forgotten by everyone. This is through no fault of my own. I did everything I could, exceeding anything that could be reasonably expected from any dev, the place has just gone to shit.

I wasn't sure where to take this game and I had a few concerns about its future "strategic depth" potential, but I have a few ideas now. For now, your troops revive on a timer so the fight isn't entirely decided in the first three seconds by whatever is happening in the melee fight, and the goal of the battle is to push in and destroy the enemy crystal/tower/whatever.

Extremely easy, I use a mix between files made by Diablo 1 and 2 modders and run the results through the D1 graphics tool (from DevilutionX git) to apply the palette. The trick is that you don't need to denoise or remove AA when applying the palette, by running the sprite through the D1 graphics tool it's gives the authentic weird navy blue colors in place of transparent pixels. I have prerender autism so my biggest gripe with your game is that it's 3d.

Cavalry does not work that way. They attack from the sides and no amount of training can get a horse to directly charge a line of infantry with spears pointed at them. That's why the counter to cavalry is to form square so there's no 'side' to attack, but then the enemy infantry just rolls over you.

this course will teach you the fundamentals of tactics when using units in a battle.

https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL4VoyER2bxcTY_74KpNHDdI3ME8atrylw

Like the other anon said, cavarly does something like a side flank attack instead of a frontal shock attack.

Also, muskets meta is to do a square units where they shoot while slowly advancing, so the front ranks shot while the back ranks reload.

Also, you're mixing infantery charges of high middle ages with the bayonet tactics of napoleonic wars.

Infantery didn't charge using swords towards a napoleonic squad.
lol.

you're mixing 17 century units with middle age ones.

you're lacking the pikers to defend versus cavallier maids.

Also, you need to use more maid types.
Having the french maids only is boring.

You need also the english maids, the maid leotard types, the japanese and chinese maids.

Nice soldier. My main idea is that you don’t gather resources, but rather the bases that you capture produce units "for free" and every base makes different units. So there are no "races." And on multiplayer maps, every starting position is different, and expansions have more varying value, depending on what units you already have you might want different ones to round out your composition, etc. Singleplayer so far are 2 arcade modes, nice for getting to know the units, but I am drafting campaign missions, too, just not sure yet how to best create difficulty in those.

The classic sprite-based games didn't have a framebuffer. Until the mid-90s at the earliest, the amount of memory needed for a framebuffer was just too expensive for most game machines. so there was no such thing as tearing, which is an artefact of framebuffer swapping. Strictly speaking there was not even such a thing as a single frame on the video side.
The typical design had a background or two layer of tiled sprites, plus more movable sprites on top of it.
They operated left to right, one video line at a time, synchronously with the display.
Hardware capabilities were expended per video line. When you have flickering like in busy scenes in NES games, that's because the number of sprites in the same horizontal line was exceeded. They can not all be drawn and have to take turns being drawn on different frames.
Some games implemented parallax scrolling or switched color palettes between lines mid-frame, making the most of the system.
On early framebuffer games, they either 1. used vsync, 2. carefully kept time with the display or 3. actually did have screen tearing

what's your experience with 2D drawing. It's all the same skillset, if you know nothing about drawing you should learn the basics.

That is, if you want to keep with the low poly style. This style is 80% texturing, and texturing is 100% drawing.

The other option is high poly sculpting, but then you need actual sculpting skills.

>almost $7000 after but still not including taxes
>assume youtuber costed $40k for the video
Oooof big loss that's about a years wage for anyone that makes the median individual salary in the USA

I still don't get how they can command such a high price for a single video. I'd be a millionaire in just a year if I did this. Funny, I remember years back how youtube demanded you reveal if someone sponsored the video, why would anyone reveal it? There's no legal reason that could force me to. I'd rather my fanbase assume I'm just some dude playing these games for fun and found a "hidden gem." I should've become a youtuber. Seems everyone but the gold miners has an easy time of making a living off gamedev.

The simple fact that you have to kill yourselves to claim some victims is the only proof needed that your actual oppression is nearly null.

lol, kek even. as if many of societys jobs are even worthwhile. you sound like one of those boomers where its only "productive" under certain circumstances ie
>hoepoo being an indie dev success and making games after succees = BAD!!!!!! EVIL!!!
>hoepoo wagecucking at valve to make games = GOOD!!!! YASSSSS QUEER SLAY!!!!
kek you will not gaslight me into waging if i'm rich or that being a successful gamedev is a waste of time

being productive is TERRIBLE. I work a boring coding job making optimization software for a mining company. I get exhausted and unfulfilled, can't deal with programming after work so my gamedev routine that wasn't that good to begin with took an astonishing nosedive, months without progress. And now I spend all my money on MINIATURES that I'll never have time to finish PAINTING :(. Here's some that I painted last year.(Btw paining miniatures is extremely relaxing, you guys should try it sometime)

yeah the genre is underserved. It's been years since the last Sonic one. Mario Kart 8 has a lot of content but is super old now. Most of the competitors like Speestorm are fairly lame and have no relevant or interesting characters. If you can make a good cast of anime cuties or furries or whatever, plus having a fun game, you can probably get some traction.

to exist in a world where being alive in and of itself is resistance to so many social pressures is an alien experience to many

mentally already destroyed and need of validation from others to the point where disagreement causes them to spiral down further. pathetic really. these are the ones demanding you accept them (and coddle them hard) or they threaten to kill themselves. same as a woman who holds a knife to her wrist and asking "are you sure you want to break up with me?" i want 0 of these freaks to play my game, i will not hesitate to call these freaks out along with those who enable them if they should attempt to encroach on my game and attempt to push their stuff on it.

another ludokino to mention which will be in my game.

Portals to different seasonal realms.

Example: Click Clock Woods in Banjo Kazooie, the Holiday Realms in a Nightmare before Christmas.

In my game the player will be able to go to different season based realms each governed by an angel / god.

>>
>>498672904
I agree with this. That's why I'm blatantly having Elves, Dwarves, and other familiar things in my RPG.

I see world anvil entries that try to go ultra unique and it just looks way too alien.

Truth of the matter is that Elves speak to something real in our history.

I always thought Traditional Fantasy didn't need anything changed, maybe 10% of it can be different to add some flavour but most of it is already perfect
>>
>>498673024
you basically need a bit of familiar and a bit of original. But don't go too alien. Like don't make a world full of 'le heckin' xenobiologically accurate slop monsters that slug around'. It's too alien to the Human experience.

>>498673024

I hate it when fantasy tries to be different for the sake of being different.

simple, if i make the engine modular enough, other devs will use it to make their games
