I got an interview for Game Programmer at Epic Games once. I got through the HR screening, did well on their programming challenge, got up to the manager interview.

Got the basics done for my isometric open world morrowclone. I'm now going to work on just making the areas specifically on the critical path of the main story, and once that is finished work on the rest of the world. Although I do have casting animations and bow / spear animations I'm only going to focus on balancing around a sword and board warrior and once that is finished, then add in all the other archetypes. Further work on the railgun weapon. You have to charge it up a bit before it launches, so if you rapidly click it just plops out a cartridge that does nothing. Also added a kickback effect to the mech and other weapons.

yeah, it was on the Fortnite team. He said his team was mostly allocated on Battle Royale stuff, but there were a few allocated to the Guitar Hero clone. Seemed like it was kinda free-flowing, if they needed some resources on the Lego Fortnite team for example, they could pull from his team.

Also, as he explained to me, there are 2 main programming jobs for the Fortnite team: Game Programmer, that worked on everything related to actual gameplay actions, and the UI Programmers, that dealt with everything else, including UI and Servers, that stuff.

Working on a goo/jelly liquid shader that items spawn out of. I'm happy with the noise deformation (besides the clipping) but the material needs some spec/fresnel tweaks, sometimes it looks more like latex or a fabric instead of a gel liquid.

Standalone seam meshes implemented. The red part is a seam mesh, a mix between two different chunks. The parent chunk of the red is invisible so that the standalone can be more apparent visually.

No more having to regenerate entire chunks just to add a new chunk. Just re-render the seam between them.

Also eliminates the cascade effect which would occur if you regenerate an entire chunk to connect a new chunk.

Cleaning up tech debt, making everything better.

Best to let them cheat a little. If the player breaks line of sight and then leaves the area unseen, have the enemies enter search mode and look for the player. If the player breaks line of sight but is still there then have the enemies know that the player is still there, so they suppress, throw grenades, push up etc.

You don't want the player to duck behind a crate with clearly no way to escape without being seen, and all the enemies all go "Huh? Where did he go?" that's not going to make them look clever.

IMO, it's generally NGMI behavior to constantly post progress in an attempt to fish for instant gratification by gathering (You)s from nodevs. Progress posts don't just make themselves. They take time to make and write. Those devs would be better off spending that time making more progress.

Why the fuck would I feel demoralized by some schizo regularly reminding the thread that bad, unfun games that no one wanted to play ended up flopping? That would only demoralize you if you're also making a bad, unfun game.

The wasted rounds right now are basically a debris object with a different sprite, so I'll see if I can change them to a custom object that'll generate better particles.

If the thread wasn't so full of nodevs then you post progress to get feedback and comments from other yesdevs, so your reasoning for not posting progress is another symptom of the thread's poor quality, which makes my point for me.

I linked to one post as an example, but the constant shitty behaviour from useless people produces a negative incentive to post anything of value here or even have your work be associated with the thread at all. The new thread is up and it's full of loli posting, another thing to avoid being associated with, old 4chan would have doxxed those faggots and sent death threats, now they shit up the thread with impunity.

If people aren't here to develop games and post about their games then what is the thread for? You've just got /v/ lite, a thread about nothing, full of people who make nothing.

I don't need anonymous feedback or comments, and I don't need moral support. I trust my own vision, and I have access to higher quality feedback if I need it. There's no way to gatekeep nodevs out of a public forum. It's the same anywhere. Even "yesdevs" include a very wide range of skill, and so even if every poster had to have their itch.io attached to their signature, it doesn't mean their opinions should necessarily be more respected. If you ask a very technical question here, such has "how do I structure this specific system?", you'll only get yesdevs responding because only yesdevs are capable of responding. For opinion-based feedback, a nodev opinion isn't any worse than a yesdevs. In fact, we have some "yesdevs" here with really shit tastes, and I'd rather not have their opinions.

You don't develop games in this thread. People who develop games outside of this thread come to this thread to relax and shitpost with like-minded people. Yeah, a lot of us drop by to procrastinate because gamedev is very very difficult and stressful. Jobby-focused yesdevs who are looking to turn indie gamedev into a career have a very clear difference in opinion and outlook than the /v/ tourists, and it's fairly easy to tell who's who.

Average playtime isn't a perfect metric by any means, but it's one of the best that we have. It's a composite of many different factors that strongly contribute to a game's success.

When I post shit to 4chan it doesn't feel like I'm venting pressure because I don't feel like it's finishing anything or getting anything out of the system.
Even if I posted a finished update or something, it doesn't matter, because I work no matter what because that's just what I do.

I feel a sense of accountability and that drives me to make the game better.
