I've recently levelled through most of the expansions and the differences are stark. Cataclysm and before it have self contained stories with pretty big and empty zones that feel nice and keep to the normal MMO style of just killing a field with some bears, even if cataclysm mixed it up a little. It generally feels low stakes and enjoyable. Pandaria has some of it too to a lesser degree. Later expansions don't feel half as good. The storylines are usually world ending threats and heavy use of phasing and stuff makes it feel like you are fighting a war all the time. Between getting shuffled through a story instead of quest hubs and the zones generally looking crazy very few of them actually feel like a real world. I think shadowlands is the absolute worst for all this, completely feeling like a theme park of crazy shit.
