I'm kinda scared because the ingredients were really expensive and if I fuck it up and I'm going to be stuck with a lot of shitty food for the next few days.

You can make beef stew where the beef is the only expensive part pretty easily. You just gotta let it cook long enough.

6 years ago when I was posting my 3D game in these threads I was getting a lot more (You)'s than I get now with a 2D game. Was AGDG nicer back then or are 3D games just inherently more interesting to people?

I've started doing these short idea docs when I come up with a new one that seems any good. I fill em up with all that spills out from my head for the idea. This one just really hit me.
I suppose you're right I gotta hold off a couple days and try to refocus on the current project. It's not like the current project is a bad one. Sparkly new idea is sparkly and new.

>or are 3D games just inherently more interesting to people?
It's this for sure and it applies even outside /agdg/. 2D games have to have really striking art to spark even close to a similar level of interest.
Though aggydaggy has gotten a lot worse over the years.

So I tried AI for the first time porting some shaders to my niche engine on top of porting a small lib I made from godot and I have to say that I'm fucking impressed, especially since it's a niche engine.
No way I'm using it for serious programming but for shaders and some math I can easily tell is wrong it's a godsend, the limits on the paid version are still very constraining.

40 messages every few hours but it can lose context so you have to "waste" a message on that, if you're working on something more complicated than very basic utilities there is no way it can produce decent results.
Still really good for obnoxious shader and selfcontained vulkan stuff, i'd pay more than 20bux a month to help with that.

Can I not use the same skeletal animations from one character to the other in unity if the bones are not the same length? I want to just use the move and rotational data, it shouldn't matter if the same bones are different sizes, but if I use the Human idle animation clip on the monster in unity, it stretches all of the monsters bones to be the same length as the human.

I'm at a crossroads where I need to decide whether I want real time action battle, or if I want to make it like a chrono trigger style battle system? It's an open world isometric rpg without classes and you play by yourself. Think morrowind but 2d isometric. Right now I just have it as action, so if you left click you swing your sword, press a hotkey and you cast a spell in real time etc., but was thinking it might be fun to have a chrono trigger battle system because I really liked that system (but for some reason we never saw any other games adopt it?).

Nothing. Morons think it's oversaturated but it's literally proven to be a growing market. Cozy games are intended for women, and more women are starting to play video games every year. Very few genres have the luxury of pandering to a growing audience, especially a growing underserved audience. Most audiences are actually shrinking as the men who've supported those types of games for years gradually age out of gaming and younger generations don't have the same interest.
>>
if you want to capitalize on trends you need to develop quickly

I'm the same guy. The reason none of us are making these games is because we're all fucking losers who have no idea what the women want. No man does, but us even less so. >>

>>
>>499948909
It's the social media addicted "gamedevs" that latch onto the genre that are the problem. There is no stop to these people coming into gamedev, it's not just this genre they're invading. They've already invaded my genre so much that I can't easily find stuff that I'd buy and play. So many just look like cookie cutters of each other with normgroids slopping it up. I'd rather go back to the days where these people would probably look at me with disgust for playing video games.

I made a game using only blueprints because I don't know code. It got my foot in the door with programming and I'm moving to learning code now. It's easier to do once you've seen the building blocks of code without having to stare at text(I'm an autistic retard). I am too inexperienced to say it could do anything code could and I don't know what I don't know, but it worked to finish a game for me. So I say if that's your only roadblock just do it.

Doing the numbers, 532 reviews is about ~$76k or ~2.5 years of the median US salary, something you can probably make working at McDonalds full time in maybe 2-4.5 years depending on the state and if you live with your parent's. That's not really all that much in the US.

gotta be retarded, the whole thing is a massive gamble. in fact you're actually better off gambling your money. if you want guaranteed money you work a job, not create something and hope people even see it
you should be making a game because you have something to share with the world, and the only reason to charge money for it is because people have the idea that free = bad, and therefore ignore it

Get it? Like the bard is controlling the tempo of the battle. That will be fun and tacticool right? It doesn't matter how broken spells are either because I'm deciding to cheat and make it so what spells a character gets depends on the party comp so I don't have to try to make each spell work with each comp somehow. I just have to make sure each comp is equally broken within the context of the game and scrap any idea of balanced pvp between different comps.

Sometimes when I look at some schmuck making another roguelike deckbuilder card game, I hope their just doing it for the money because it'll be sad if that dime a dozen game was a passion project.

How do you make a grand strategy game cozy?

Not being facetious here, by the way. So far, I think my GSG will be cozier than a typical Paradox game due to a focus on diplomacy and internal management rather than warfare, and a very lightweight / low involvement combat system, but how do I make the presentation of a map game cozy?

Anon if you were a third worlder and had even a good ability at doing math you'd quickly realize this is the fastest way to retiring in said countries. Why do you think so many third worlder artists are charging first world rates? If they can get away with it, then they'll make it faster, beats waging at McDonalds for $1 a day when they can charge you maybe $200-$300 for a piece of fanart done in a week or two. Same deal with gamedev, a small 50 review game made in a year = way more than earning $3000 at McDonalds over a whole year. Hmm what if I go tell them this? Saturate gamedev so hard that indie dev finally loses it's luster and we can get a golden age again? Wait a second, that would only push away 1st worlder's the 3rd worlder's are probably in it mainly for money compared to the average 1st world dev who fails to do the math and realize how hard it is then again I how many 1st world dev's are in it for the online fame even if they knew the odds of making it are slim?

The trick to making nice movement is a combination of accomodating things players expect (stuff like handling camera movement a bit on its own), making it do what people want it to do even if it breaks the rules (coyote time, chaining move options together even if it's illogical like a dive out of a jump for extra horizontal movement), and giving people a strong toolbox that lets them express themselves (give players sufficiently varied and interesting options that they can scale obstacles MULTIPLE ways, so that if they literally don't even learn the entirety of the moveset they can still beat the game with competence.)

Plus, give your game a fun unique gimmick.

Cris is a case of OCD mixing with a superiority complex. He thinks everything needs to be perfect before he can finish something, but he also thinks he never makes a bad decision. It's why he posts on here: he wants to see what needs to be improved but rejects the idea that it needs to be improved.
>I just finished this new workflow chuds. I think I'm Metroid on the NES level now.

>I don't have a unique gimmick besides dashing. My main issue i guess is just implementation and making things feel good.
Easiest way to figure out this gap (that gap being the knowledge to bridge between your intended mechanics and a good character controller) would be to just itemize your moveset. Consider one of the old instruction manuals from Mario 64 or mario sunshine. They go on for several pages, and describe not just individual moves, but combinations of moves and how they interact. Maybe not fully but still. Lots of 3d platformers did this btw.
The reason this is helpful is because it lets you see, actively, the types and ways your player can choose to interact with the world at any given instance. If you make it like a flowchart, you can fill out that flowchart with options that are both natural and interesting for any given obstacle - say the difference between a turnaround jump and a jump into vertical-angled dash as hypothetical moveset options - and as long as you general provide the player with more than one option for any given obstacle, people will be pleased.
>
also any gimmick you have doesn't need to be complex. Just add random and janky options to see if you like how they interact with your world and then polish them after you've made some selections. and make SURE that whatever you include - everything from attacks to dashes to jumps - can be used in some combination or order. If you have a punch, a jump, and a dash, and nothing else, make sure that pressing those single 3 options in a different order will end up with different movements and outcomes.
>
it sounds hard, but it should be easy for you.
>>
>>499951112
That's easily at least 100k he made off of that, and for an incredibly boring-looking game with a retarded un-googleable name as well. Dude doesn't understand how lucky he is to have those art skills and a preexisting platform.

Nta but firstly... You could absolutely do that if you 3d rendered your sprites.

Second armor and character appearance customization wasn't a thing in videogames for a long time because as you've just described, the amount of animation work increases with every piece of clothing. But even many early 3d console generation games like final fantasy just straight up didn't fucking bother changing the appearance of the characters regardless of what you had equipped, with the exception of the characters holding different weapon models during battle.

Don't do character appearance customization if it's not feasible. Just make a character design and they look the way they look. If you are too autistic to ignore the fact that your character looks the same when they're wearing a cloth vest and full plate armor, just change it and say actually instead of armor they wear magic protection bracelets and you can't see them so they don't need to change clothes

Look I'd be happy too considering the stereotype of the average artist nowadays, but ai art is still too far off in it's current state. At best you can get some nice concept art and models that will probably need to be redone to have stuff set right.

Give it another 5-6 years and I'm sure it'll be better to a point of maybe being able to get you game usable assets beyond portraits/traceable stuff/models to adjust, provided the financial sectors AI's interest doesn't dry up as that's probably what is pushing it forward the most. that money dries up and they'll likely drop AI efforts and go back to old work and/or focus on stuff where AI actually helps them make money rather than just hyping up their stock price. Ie Nvidia using AI to make fake frames. Yes fake frames. Meaning when you're playing certain games, that "60 fps" is really 30 fps with 30 fps worth of AI generated frames. Meaning those frames aren't actually the game but an AI rendered drawing of what it thinks should be there in that specific frame. Technically that means you're staring at a drawing the AI genned to fake giving you frames. Unironically a lot of the gamers raged when the few games supporting this removed it (likely due to issues or something techinical)
>I won't play it until you put it back in!
>The game is literally unplayable at 30 fps!
These people are so obsessed with graphics and getting 100+ fps. I don't get it, I just don't, but these are probably the majority of gamers and probably also why Gabe changed the steam algo, they'll svlop triple A stuff right up every chance they get for $69.99 + $100 in DLC all while scoffing at pixel-gold/3D model-gold tier games going for $14.99 unless it goes FOTM.

Spent 3 days of development just getting inventories and boxes with inventories working and it's functional with like half of the necessary features, sucks that so much effort needs to go into something that doesn't even feel fun to use just a necessary part of the game, like saving and loading or options menus, it did teach me a lot about custom resources, don't feel bad that most of the code was from a tutorial considering how much had to be rearranged since the guy did all of the inventory on a UI node for the main scene instead of the player scene

I have created a simple method to simulate anime girls' facial distortions (like how their mouths always face the camera, and how to keep their eye closest to the camera in proper position, and their other eye somewhat facing the camera for a few degrees - that type of thing) using blender. The model I tested it on is...... not pretty, so much so that I don't want to post it here and be compared to cris, but I think this has promise and I want to use it on my next game I make. But, uh, I probably should have waited until after I did this just now to spend like 3 hours figuring this out. But! it helped me learn some more of blender's systems like constraints, so I think it was fruitful in the end.

If anyone familiar with blender cares, it's literally just having the eyes and mouth be flat images, track the camera while having limits on their rotations (simplest being only rotating around the z axis, a little hard to get it to stay upright if you add the x and y axes, uh maybe if you're better at this than I am then you can figure that out), and just kind of hollowing out parts of their face to accomodate the eyes and mouth. Though, thinking about it, if I could just get the eyes and mouths to render in front of, say, the face itself it might be a superior way of doing it, because it's way less geometric horror and way easier to actually construct. I think I need to learn how to us vertex groups, I think..? Uhhh............... anyway my actual game I'm working on is about dinosaurs and puzzles so idk why I wasted my time on this, I should probably keep working on that. wish me luck aggydaggers

>you're just experimenting with shitty niche subjects that you call a "game engine" that will never amount to a game

Hmm maybe. But I think I have a nice little framework for a text game (slowly) coming together. I don't think I'll do much for graphics and instead try to improve my writing and imagination. It's something I've slacked on for most of my life.

>for "problems" like performance

I need a system for the skill/spell system I'm planning. It doesn't need to be anything fancy, but I need composition at runtime and I found the sparse set ecs treatment to suit my needs. And now I have it. Nobody has given me any alternatives to this that I could be satisfied with. The way it is now, I can pass any scheme data in as a component, so I'm happy.

a lot of people use tablets without screens. the delay on screens can be pretty fucking annoying depending on how you work, for sculpting i would rather a basic bitch tablet. drawing on a screen feels more like traditional drawing tho, so even with delay it's better imo.

you know where your mouse will go without looking at your mouse, not so different with screenless tablets. screen tablets are great, but can hurt your neck, the screen feels hot and your hand covers part of what you are drawing. whereas no-screen means your neck is in a neutral position.

weird how i actually internalized politically correctness.

guess i'll just show some balls and make all women in my game wifes that are only there to do household, breed and take care of children.
Cultures 2 did it so why can't i?
i'd also want women to be whores and sex slaves you can buy, but i'm not sure if that's allowed in the steam ToS

It's not that I'm lazy. I have motivation to do a project, but when I start it I start having doubts if it's worth my time. Devoting yourself to 4 years of work to end up with a project that has 0 returns is an intense feeling. Especially now that I'm pushing 40, it's basically like I have 1 project to "make it" before I'm decrepit.

The way I see it, once you have your first game done (which will probably flop), you should have good knowledge and plenty of scripts to work with to try tweaking it and making other games. I think hoping for success on first release is a fool's task. It happens, but it's rare.
>>
>>500005736
>once you have your first game done (which will probably flop), you should have good knowledge and plenty of scripts to work with to try tweaking it and making other games.
what actually happens is that you release your flop, and then you never recover from it emotionally and spiritually

The solution is to work on projects that don't take 4 years. Plan for something you think you can do in 6 months and then spend 1 year on it because your estimate was wayyy too optimistic. Going for multiyear projects without having already made yourself known in the gamedev space is insane. If you're going to commit that much time you need to know that there's at least some bare minimum audience that will buy it no matter what because they liked your previous game.

>>500003486
By using your phone in your bed you're conditioning your brain to think of bed as a place for phone fiddling, not just sleep. Don't do it.

The thing is, the project I have planned is so big, I'm thinking about making something small scoped that I can finish in a year instead so I can get something under my belt and feel more enthusiasm to work on a big project. Maybe I'll take the characters and put them into a new smaller scale project if I can think of something, everything I come up with always seems to be a major project :/

If you have a nodev and you think you have a project idea that will take you one year to make, it will actually take you five. Start with Pong or Flappy Birds, and then make some game jam games.

Depends on the textures and the aesthetic you're going for, imo
It's a bit too high poly to be traditional "low poly", but "mid poly" would probably have a bit more detail on the head - is the head meant to be skin or a helmet? I don't know if eyes would look that good when viewed from angles which aren't just forward
>>
>>500009869
Upper body looks good

Show what it looks like when his legs bend.
>>
>>500010101
I don't think AI can do topology like that at the lower poly range. Not that I've seen, anyway.

>>500010173
Around PS2 level graphics, so yeah, mid poly, clocks in at 4k faces. Lower face is bare but Upper face has a mask on so the eyes aren't visible anyway.

I don't have any time to make a full blown sequel to Punch Monkey but I think making a Christmas Nights-esque minigame for the holidays might be doable. No promises though.

I'm a 10+ year industry experienced software engineer, and the tactics curse got me (currently working on a survivors-like). A modern-looking tactics game just has so many moving parts. The expected quality is way higher than it was two decades ago.

I hate creative work. Coming up with initial design for characters, coming up with an UI that fits the game theme, coming up with promotional art material. It's the one thing I can't fucking optimize and can never tell how long it will take. Give me a 3D model with a bucket list of animations and I can immediately start going through it, immediately tell you how long it will take after a single animation, and I progressively get faster with each piece done. Same with gameplay mechanics if I already know what systems the game will have and how they interact. Going from 1 to Infinity is easy, but that initial jump from 0 to 1, from a blank canvas to a design I can work with, that's the unknown element that wastes most of my time.
>>
>>500018064
I love doing it!
