Done fixing a bug that caused the game to crash when you clicked the message box too fast. It's crazy when you stop and think about it: after fixing a game-breaking bug, you will NEVER have to worry about it again. How neat is that?
More importantly, I finished writing all six introduction cutscenes to the game. Different ones play depending on your starting location, introducing different characters and different parts of the lore. Now, I'm not sure if I can get the first main quest done as I had planned (for some reason, I thought DD59 was two weeks away, not one)... but I'll try. If Factorio: Space Age lets me.

In my game, the 3D Main menu is a star sanctum and other stars do try to contact you.

You can walk around the 3D Main Menu, it is inspired by Dr. Muto's home.

You'll get messages from other stars, trying to ask for permission to be let into your 3D Main Menu / Star Sanctum.

Your Guide will advise you to ignore the messages and not to wander too far into the depths of the sanctum. And maybe just to focus on the Game modes available.

But I suck at this. Earlier today I decided to game for once on a fun game. This is a game I played years ago, a lot like a game I played maybe over a decade ago. Just looking at it, it had so much I want to do in one of my ideas. In fact it was the idea I was toying with first while trying out engines. Only really tested it in one. My art was atrocious. It's a small niche but one problem is that almost every single game there has one major advantage over me. (1) first movers advantage, (2) extremely high quality, (3) capitzalized off the niche even with meh art and gameplay, (4) free + decent quality.

Source 2 has a really good physics engine and hammer 2 is very easy to use. Chaos sucks and Unreal is pretty shit at level design in general without plugins. The modeling tools in UE5 were a step in the right direction but those are nothing compared to a real map editor.

That really wasn't the bottleneck. The VRoid placeholders were fine, and I was willing to shell out to pay for artists if need be. We had dozens of unimplemented systems on the TODO list, each of which would've taken a good programmer several weeks of manhours to do, some maybe months. There was just a demoralizing mountain of systems and tooling that still needed to be built. Some of the tasks were quite big, like a world partitioning / asset streaming system for a seamless open-world, and a movement controller that included IK overrides. (Godot's skeleton system got another overhaul between 4.2 and 4.3, and we right between those two.) There were only 3 of us kind of active together, and one guy (the one who got everyone together originally) dropped out because of some family issue, and I was already low on motivation by the time he left. We tried posting to drum up more interest, but couldn't get more people on board.

Yeah, pretty much. I took some of those systems for granted since they're free or could be bought as assets in other game engines. Godot is definitely still behind in terms of tooling for the standard 3D open-world adventure game that UE is designed for.

It's not about our preference, it is about what they communicate, and whether that is okay with how you imagined them.

The way I see it, Top Left has a warmer look. She also seems more simple, as the eyelashes look like regular makeup. Right has a colder look with the blonde eyelashes, looking a bit more severe. Probably the more toned neck gives it that feeling.

Bottom right seems like a more messy person in general. That little pony tail makes me think like they have tied that on Monday, and haven't touched it since. Left one in turn just had a bad hairday, or walked through wind and got a little messed up. Her expression is also more like she heard some bad news, looking disappointed. Meanwhile the right one looks closer to crying.

The player sticks to the platform just fine when stationary. The only issue that arises, after further testing, is that they slide off the platform only when said platform is moving upwards + horizontally. something that's worth remembering is that unless the characters are always at a fixed resolution, having thicker lines protects it against antialiasing.
The black lines under the bust of the top-right character are thicker than the character's outline which doesn't seem good.
I might've expected her skirt to also have some crease lines, likely vertically over the indent where her groin is, since right now it looks like it's glued there.
If you don't want to make lines thinner, you can color some of the inner lines in a darker-than-shadow color. You already did that on the top-left and it may be good, but the top-left has the problem that the shirt is just too light and attracts too much attention compared to the face and everything else.

Yeah, I'm thinking about it and top-right is better than top-left in terms of lines/design but the reason top-left might look better is because the blue colors are more pleasant. Maybe give the top-right's shirt a slight blue tint and try to keep the shadows consistently both darker and more saturated without hue-shifting it towards blue so much. Basically, color theory likes it when you move 2, maybe 1 axis (darkness, saturation, hue) but moving 3 at once looks less pleasant, and you've doing a lot of 3 axis shifts

It's a simple autobattler where units take turns damaging each other based on their Attack - Defense, so you can technically reason the outcome of the battle before it happens. Cursed items will disable or weaken the units for a couple of turns, which is why the combat happens in turns anyway and isn't auto-resolved instantly. It's a very plain and simple approach which is why I had delusions I could finish it in 6 months, but oh well.
Webm related is an extremely rough and unpolished depiction of it to get an idea, I haven't gotten around to properly doing combat yet.

Basically, it's a color wheel where, rather than trying to use the full range of colors of a the computer hardware, colors at the same lightness (L) will actually appear to be the same brightness to the human eye. I've managed to install git on mine and push commits to my pc through the wifi, since my programming workflow is entirely text-based I'd be able to make any game programming wise. Art-wise I used to use sketchbook pro to be able to make art at what I consider to be gamedev level but it became incompatible with me and I don't really have incentive to look for a mobile art program anymore. i'm this poster lol, i made the models in blender (with winulator) and exported them to blockbench (mobile) and imported them to godot mobile

the only problems i encountered were due to my inexperience with godot or any type of coding at all besides html and a bit of gta opcode scripting here are there

by now i'm sure i figured out how to make a character walk since i've moved a cube, but i'm making a different character with a bit more appealing proportions, less tris, and hopefully better textures, and gonna test how fbx armatures and animations are imported, since i don't use a version of blender that exports gltf on mobile

I worked on a porn game and we had mocap and and a 3D scan of an actual porn star, so we used her name in the game, like to market her and because it makes sense that you'd feature the name of the porn star in the game since it's a scan of a real one

Well they have some unwritten (at least I never saw it) where you can't use the names of real people, even though she consented and wanted it. They banned us and would not let us appeal at all. WE COULD HAVE SIMPLY CHANGED THE CHARACTER'S NAME, WE JUST DIDN'T KNOW. Nope, banned permanently, no appeals.

thanks man I think i obviously need to add something that immediately jumps out as different. it does have some things that might set it apart but they're not easy to show. you can hire cats to fight as army with you through levels, theres some puzzles and the multiplayer works too but only offline (couch co-op) so far.

oh it has story and characters too some who give you quests like delivering something from one area to another, kind of like a 2d yakuza game.

Porn just requires you to do less market research because people will always want more of it and there's a lack of supply due to people being too ashamed to do it and bigger studios not wanting to tackle it. Tutorials are great for the beginning. If you've never animated anything, you should be following along, taking notes, trying to understand the fundamentals of what's going on. Then you should try doing something similar without the tutorial. Do that for 3-5 tutorials and you should have the basics to start doing things on your own. Let's do math.

This model takes 4-5 hours to be finished and have 1 animation.

At 2 usd (my country wages) this means it cost basically 10 usd to make.

A 32x32 pixel art takes me 10 minutes to make.
So it boils down to 40 cents more or less to me.
After 25 sprites, the price is the same.

Making a new character would usually require a new texture, which would be 1 hour of work.

If we assume 8 directions walk cycle and idle cycle, at 4 frames each one.
Then is 8 * 4 frames being 32 sprites.

Therefore my styles is even cheaper than 32x32 pixel art.

I'm an idea guy, I need help deciding on what direction I'm going to take my idea as I start actually devving.
I want to make a dungeon crawler with some sort of narrative, that's about all I know for certain. Which would you rather play? A typical first person blobber where you walk down passages and encounter random enemies between story locations (1), or something that's closer to a point and click tabletop game where every room is individually designed with predetermined NPC/enemy locations and loot, but your actions as a player influence the story (2).

Please help.

I can argue that tutorial phase can last a longwhile. You won't learn how to make a save system, options or other advanced tasks just by reading documentation. You need tutorials in the beginning to create a foundation of knowledge. At some point you'll have enough stuff in your toolbox that when you need to make something new, you'll modify something you already have, or kitbash something together

Impossible to tell, both can be done well or bad. Depends on your storytelling and art abilities. First one would be more tolerant to bad writing/art while second would rely on it more but possibly be more different/novel.

I never thought about it but of course you can bake lighting into vertex colors. That is brilliant! It would make it so much easier to go for that Vagrant Story style. Though maybe it would be better to just bake the AO into vertex colors and then use vertex lighting real time in the engine. That might result in a cool style as well.

Is this anon also here? If so, what do you mean Godot has a webserver? I've searched around, and I'm pretty sure it doesn't. Either way, the whole point is to be able to leverage the massive npm ecosystem with tools like create-react-app, and afaik, you'd only be able to do that with NodeJS.

Story based games are extremely difficult to make. You need to make so much story content for the game to have any playtime and most people will just skip it.

If you're into blobbers it's probably better to make a traditional blobber with some light story elements. Handcrafting all those dungeon floors for a blobber is still viable and you can spread out the story throughout the dungeon. It should be decently easy to pad out the playtime with combat in a blobber.

I didn't want to invoke this game's name because it usually derails conversation, but ideally I'd like to make something like Undertale where's there's at least two clearly defined story paths (ie. peaceful and genocide in that game) that have dramatically different ways of interacting with the game's limited content. That way players have a reason to replay the game and see the content they otherwise missed, at least in theory.

CG Axis. they're supposed to be paid but you can just download the textures straight from the site. they're all at least 1200x1200. I just take the diffuse / emission and the ambient occlusion image, then combine as two layers in photoshop (set to Multiply on the AO), merge layers and wa la

If you have a good idea on how to differentiate the gameplay then you could try it. I don't think blobbers have done much on that front. I haven't played them that much but the ones I have are pretty much just dungeon crawling and killing with maybe some light story elements. Maybe the (2) approach would work better on what you have in mind. When in doubt you gotta prototype but prototyping story related gameplay is uhh... difficult.
