Google Firebase free limits are good enough for small games.
https://hathora.dev/ comes with $500 free starter credit, which should be more than enough.

I mean, I will make a porn game if I have to
But if I could avoid it, it would be nice if anything because I wouldn't have to concern with me which kind of content is okay to have in the game and which isn't.
For SFW games it's pretty intuitive to me just don't directly antagonize any group of people
But for porn game it's way more difficult for me to see the line. For instance, MadoDev's game itself was not accepted on Steam and I wouldn't be able to say why.

The only examples are small rocks that were probably captured later, and Triton which is the only large moon around Neptune. Having a bunch of large moons or planets going in random directions just looks bad.
>only a few path create by overlapping magnetosphere are safe to travel in
Even if that weren't a lazy explanation to avoid having to draw orbital trajectories, you literally just drew a giant magnetosphere around the whole thing.

I've been using Chatgpt to give me ideas for my game's lore, which helps provide a starting point, but I'm not just going to use that without improving on it. I'm also not going to use it to program my game, It'd probably take me longer to describe to an LLM the specific problems I'm trying to solve right now than it would for me to just write a solution to those problems.

And AI art is still questionable, still very distinctive, and of limited use in games. Unless you just want one single character portrait and nothing else.

What is your game and how do you use AI in its development?
>>
1 model a week for 50 weeks. then I will be 1/4 done...

>>
The only people who are particularly taken by the possibility of AI coding for them are people who think the hard part is writing the instructions rather than understanding what is happening. But, it is an amateur thread after all.
>>
>>499777670
>Even if that weren't a lazy explanation to avoid having to draw orbital trajectories, you literally just drew a giant magnetosphere around the whole thing.
The giant visible magnetosphere is the global magnetosphere caused by the system taken as a whole, it doesn't stop every wind, furthermore the interaction of the magnetosphere of the different celestial body of the system funnel radiation into deadly ether wind. Thus the great shock wave is just the majority of the solar wind crashing on the magnetosphere, but enough particle enter the system.

>The only examples are small rocks that were probably captured later, and Triton which is the only large moon around Neptune. Having a bunch of large moons or planets going in random directions just looks bad.
One of the great question of the astrological community is why Foxnen is retrograde.

I don't want to use it for code that isn't boilerplate because the most annoying thing about programming is debugging and don't like debugging other people's code, my main game is almost finished and I started using it in a gamejam tier sideproject to texture low poly background assets and I really like the results, it's way better than I expected.

>>499779261
make retwittable content, sounds stupid but this is something you have to do deliberately when deciding what to share. Also when working on your game try to put in things that would get people to show it to their friends. Best example I can think of right now is that "now you can parry nukes" clip or the dinoblade clips https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7KEE96aYJN0
>>
>>499779207
Yeah the character outlines were done at render-time using Grease Pencil in blender
>>
>>499778927
It's not even that, people who are amazed that you can go online and just get code that does something you want is a dead giveaway that they're absolute beginners and have never made anything... Lil bros I've been copy-pasting snippets of code I found on the internet for 20 years. There's also entire projects dedicated to just giving you code to use for free, they're called libraries and modules, and you can just download them and include them in your code and use them.

The difference between doing it that way and using an LLM is that someone ( presumably) understood the code at some point and tested it, wheras an LLM is just a slightly smarter version of the predictive text on your phone's keyboard. And duct taping someone else's code together in your project can only get you so far before you actually have to understand what's going on in order to make something work.

Pretty common situation in programming honestly, getting the right information to the right place at the right time is basically the job. Luckily there is almost always a way to restructure the program so long as you have a clear idea in your head of how you actually want it to work.

i enjoyed braid, but i will always maintain that its success was due to the rising popularity of indie games at the time of its release, not because it's all that great of a game by itself. the new version is essentially just some extra details drawn onto a base game that looks perfectly fine without then, which you probably wouldn't even notice without playing the original version at the same time, plus some extra levels, for 20 bucks. just doesn't seem worth it. unfortunately, he seems willing to blame a ton of other shit in the video, instead of the possibility that he made a bad call in dumping a lot of time and effort into something nobody asked for

>massive oversaturation
How could this possibly be a problem my friend? More devs means more games, and more games means more selection, mention not more choice, and survival of the fittest will drive the best games to the masses! There's no way the market could be so saturated with poor quality games that it actually harms the industry, it's never happened years back and isn't happening now. "Shovelware" is a racist term, App Store policies make oversaturation of the market impossible, this is more better! The average modern game developer is now earning over 500,000 yearly, more than double median salary! First-class!

A good fun game that people want to play is all but guaranteed to make money. If you don't make any money, it is because no one wants to play your game. Who would want to put so much time and effort into making a video game if they knew no one would play it at the end?
>>
>has 10 employees
sir, what are you selling to pay for those employers ?
>>
Games aren't oversaturated because most games are not equivalent products to one another, not substitutes for one another. Doom does not compete with Crusader Kings just because they are both interactive software. "Market saturation" is a misapplication of an economics concept to a market it doesn't apply to and used as a way to excuse one's personal failure to develop a good game.

im unsure if ill rewrite the base for this system, but what would normally be done, so that i can try it differently for the next project? use a scripting language? make the nodes even more hardcoded to keep them smaller?

redid it with the UV overlap approach, think it looks better
vertex colors help a bit, or I can just use real-time lighting and it looks a lot nicer that way even if it's not retro purist. vertex colors would be great to quickly change the color of things if I used greyscale textures too, at basically zero performance cost

Anyone know a good method on getting the player to be "anchored" to a moving platform in Godot whilst it is moving, so that the player doesn't "slip" all over the place whilst the platform is changing directions abruptly?
>>

>>
>>499800083
If you're using physics to move the whole thing not really. You can only mitigate it.
Otherwise you'd have the platform velocity taking precedence over the character's one.
>>
>>499800345
Depends on how relevant the plot is, the problem is that you'll get something unremarkable that takes more time editing than just making it from scratch.
>>
>>499796735
what's it look like if you give it some texture filtering?

Clarify what you mean specifically instead of using meme words like "soul" that lack any specific meaning. Will make thinking through these issues simpler.
>>

My take on it is this:
>If you don't have a marketing plan for your game at its conception phase, then you haven't finished the concept.
>If you don't know how you're going to market your game from before you even write your first line of code or open some software to make your first asset, you don't know how to make your game.

Design, I need one more non combat bard skill.

>persuasion

Maybe lore can give more detailed monster information but then I'd need to have randomize monsters and idk if I want to do that. What if I gave them a sex skill that didn't do anything but give the player a fade to black and funny noises and a chance to be afflicted with stds as a joke haha would my game sell better? They already get various money and items through performance/barter being able to get DIFFERENT items from having sex would be silly and redundant.

bad. since the textures are next to each other they bleed over and mix
idk how to avoid it when using an atlas, really. if I create a transparent border it might remove the ability to quickly divide the UV and move it over the desired square texture

don't stick the UVs to the very border between textures, always leave a safety margin so it won't bleed into the next one.

Just pay big streamers to pay your games? Seems like marketing has been pretty much solved because of streaming. You could also do a big funny public stunt but idk if you'd have to ask your mom to dress up as an adevnturer and galavant around down town with you.
>>
A genuinely good game sells itself and does not need marketing. The only reason agdg devs throw a fit over this simple fact is that they don't want to admit to themselves that their game is not good enough to sell itself.

Personally I'm coming to terms with my own game's inadequacy and spending my last few weeks before launch almost entirely on marketing.
>>
>>499801379
Why do you <need> five?

If you have an item identification system (is this a roguelike type dungeon thing?) then lore could be a way to save on ID costs with unknown items. Or it could tilt loot distribution to give you better quality items maybe, like as if your character is more aware of that stuff. Maybe it could gate your ability to read certain spellbooks or whatever for learning new bard songs.

>>
>>499801875
No it doesn't, the question "is this process or tool soulless" is effectively nonanswerable because soul itself has no meaning in this context. You could never objectively identify the quality or amount of soul because the soul is not a real thing that exists and rather is only a vague concept. Philosophically speaking it's a waste of time to argue within such notions as they are basically just word prisons.
>>
>>499802475
Doom was carried entirely on a shareware demo. Zero marketing.
>>
>>499802084
Each skill has 3 ranks and the player gets 3 characters which each can get up to 20 skill points to spend so I need enough skills that you can have differentiated characters in case the player wants to take 3 bards. I guess I could have like ultra super hard checks that require 3 bards that are all sex masters to reliably check but idk. Seems like a good number to feel like there's a variety of ways to make your guy too I think.

There's no need to give specific examples, I dunno why aspiring developers obsess so much about naming example games to each other. NTA

I just imagine that if someone believed they had a good game, they'd be happy even if the first few weeks didn't get traction.

Because the game is good and all that would be needed is them just telling some people and from there it'd spread.

But when a person knows they released a quick cash grab, then they despair.
>>
If you released a Shareware game today that could run on any device, could be modded into a completely different game, and had an engaging game loop that people would enjoy for decades:
It would get completely ignored. The modern player would consider a "free" game to have low value.
>Good things are expensive, if it's not expensive it can't be good
This is legitimately how people think. My wife will spend more money on an equivalent item at the grocery store and come home to say she bought "the good one" despite having never tried the item.

Hello, I saw that there was some discussion about poke all toads yesterday and I wasn't here to comment.

Last month has been a marketing push, I was active on twitter, tiktok and reddit trying to promote the game. This was mostly drawing and making videos, putting gamedev on strict hold to avoid procrastination. I had a very lucky break and got a viral tweet. resulting in growing from 340 followers to 6040+ followers, receiving 2000 wishlists and a lot of fanart. I still find it hard to believe that it was that sucessful.

Though I know that followers don't equal sales, hopefully continuing my current plan and entertaining people will keep the game on everyone's memory until it releases.

And if it doesn't sale, I'm still building a story with my characters, which is invaluable.

Also people mentioned that I should release as soon as I can. The reality is I need more content, releasing as it would make people dissapointed. It is not perfectionism or fear from releasing. The game is just incomplete and I need to put hundreds of more hours into it.

>>499789139
I'm still here, I just don't post that often. The reason is that I reached a point in development where I cannot easily share progress since I want to keep parts of the game away from public eyes. Also I believe I have funneled people here to look for news about the game, which is something I don't think that benefits them or the thread.

>>499574514
Thats very cute!
>>
>>499804419

>after taxes 5 years all expenses. I think it's reasonable to say a game made it if lets you live comfortably for 5 years.
That's decent I wouldn't call it make it tier but it is definitely an amount where the popularity of the game could help future game interests. For me 5 years worth would mean my game got almost 2000 reviews. I'd definitely have an easy time of more future success with a fanbase that large.
>>
>>499804148
If you don't despair or feel anything when releasing a game to poor reception then you got a fucking iron will or you're delusional about it being good and selling eventually.

More likely is that you've never released a game so you don't have a fucking clue what it is like.

Ehh I'm in a weird position to be honest. I know marketing isn't needed besides a very light amount so people know of it's existence. However in my game's current state it will simply not make it. As of late though, the improvements I've considered, some of which I've been working on, might be what's needed to save it, but it requires prolonging development. I don't want to add more time to development and it ends up flopping anyways.

>Redot
Sorry to disappoint, anon, but Redot is doomed.
Redot's founders are delusional no-coders, they have no real engine development experience and none of them have contributed to the engine.
They've unceremoniously kicked out developers from the team for calling them out, now they're blatantly stealing code from their new fork, Blazium, uncredited.
They claimed they wouldn't be taking in donations and now they're cashing out, they've just announced their new ko-fi and Redot merch.
>>
>>499818702
so true sis
>>
>>499818753
If you're gonna simp for a Godot fork, simp for Blazium instead, it's being run by a couple of old former Redot devs who know what they're doing, and one of them is a total unhinged chud, I'm sure you'd like him.

>>

Zoomer devs don't know how good millennial and gen x devs had it. They barely even had to try, as long as they showed up they got a piece of the pie. Jon Blow made millions off fucking Braid of all things. A new game like Braid would not even make $10,000 today.

*Sigh* why, why must they push this shit? Who are these freaks and why do they get into gamedev? Why are there so many of these freaks in gamedev anyways? Why does it draw that crowd? Is this why I see so few irl, because they shut themselves in and dev where people can't see that they are obviously not what they claim to be? Can I just play a game without them pushing this stuff constantly? What would be the best way to shut these freaks down should you get famous off your game?

It's lazy faggots who unironically believe that one day there's going to be a magic AI model capable of generating an entire finished game at the push of a button, which they will then release on Steam and become a millionaire overnight. Never mind the fact that free assets have always existed and literally nothing has ever been stopping them from making a game with said assets apart from their own work ethic (or rather lack thereof). Hence why they're patiently waiting for that magic button that will solve all their problems.
>>
>>499825364

That's an incredible amount of bullshittery and tedium that's only fun for people who already know German. It also immediately spoils exactly what's going to happen for anyone with a neuron, so much so that a lot of non-Germans would probably guess correctly too.

I would suggest embracing the "Roleplaying" aspect of RPGs if that's the game your making, this path seems to lead to more of a historical-trivia thing (Blech).
>>
>>499802549
Soul is the evidential effort and passion put into making something. If you look at something and can see the passion and love of the person making it shining through, it has soul. If you can't, it doesn't. You can yell about how this isn't in dictionaries all you want, this is what everybody always means when they say it.

also demo day is coming up so that might be a reason why agdg is rather slow today. not going to make it in time for demo day so there's no rush for me at the moment to get my game in.

Alright, it's been about 23hrs since I started. I had to find time to sleep, and eat several times, and take many bathroom breaks, really eats into the dev time. I've distracted myself adding some sounds when I should be refining the level to make play smoother. After that though, all that's left is to poke at it cosmetically until I call it good enough. I've already spent way too long actually playing it, which is always a good sign. I feel I'm really close to my design goal:
>A psychological horror game designed to inspire feelings of uncertainty, dread, desperation, and hopelessness.
I don't know if I'll be able to strike the right balance between psychological torment and outright tilt, but I'll try before I subject any of you perverts to it.

That and AI replacing low and now mid level programmers and artists has killed indie game scene. Only people that seem to have any light in their eyes about gamedev are solodev indie devs making their ideal dream game or some shit but freelance work which made most indie communities thrive is now dead.

Have you noticed any indie dev location on the net is all just solo devs marketing their slop?

How many times per month do you have power outages? I get one around once a month here in Brazil and it sucks. We also don't have a tax treaty with us so any money made on Steam is reduced
>>
>>499834305
Hmmm, I'd say on average 1 every 3-4 months. Generally on the months where there are very big and windy storms there will be a few outages, and then on the rest of the year its nothing.

>We also don't have a tax treaty with us so any money made on Steam is reduced
Once you make enough money for 15% you lose to matter you can setup a company in a third country that has a tax treaty with both Brazil and the US and not lose the 15% anymore, although setting this up is more expensive so it only makes sense after you're making a certain amount from your games from Steam.

The Tax treaty thing is a big problem. If you add Steam cut + US's government cut you end up with exactly 49% of your total earnings, and that's not considering Brazil's income taxes. It's almost like they settled on that number as a joke. There are ways to evade that though, If I ever make it I'll open a business in Oregon or something to receive money, and then pay myself a salary.

How much you end up with depends on how many of your sales end up being to Americans. If you localize your game or it goes popular elsewhere other than America you'll get closer to the 70%. Getting 55% (losing 15% due to half the sales being from Americans) should be the average.

Now that raylib has built in gpu skinning, I can finally start adding NPC behavior and have them playing different animations.
So they're no longer just running around aimlessly, they're now walking around aimlessly and occasionally stopping.
You can see that as I approach them, they start to run. Right now they only have sound to go off, so if they hear Batty or hear another human scream they'll become "alerted" and run from then on. I'm going to add them seeing Batty next. I'd like to keep building on this, make it like a stealth game where they sort of notice the player character and then can become totally alerted to the PC.
Uploaded to /wsg/ since the sound is a pretty important part of this.

30% of the value that Americans pay goes to the IRS. So if Americans are responsible for 50% of your sales, you'll automatically pay 15% to the IRS (because 15% is 50% of 30%).
>>
>>499835306
Rather, because 15% of the total you made is 30% of the 50%. You get what I mean, right? Either way, this can be circumvented once you make enough, and you can also slightly affect it by localizing the game to non English speaking countries.

Make a 2D farming game, but instead is about collecting stones and minerals to craft into jewels which you sell on the market.

Basically pokemon but with jewels and stones and some crafting from minecraft and the store mechanic from reccettear.

Also, some farming mechanics to harvest healing crystals.

Crouching should just shrink their hit box and lower the camera, not lower them into the floor. If you have a hack solution like this, i guess you could physically raise them again when the uncrouch.

when i crouch i lower the collider's height as recommended by the docs. what goes into the floor is just the model. i am raising the player when i uncrouch, but for some reason it's not consistent. for example, i set it to raise player 5 units up (very exaggerated distance) but sometimes player will stick to the floor.

True, although you shouldn't live like a king really since making money from indie development is not guaranteed forever, so you should live within your means. Unless your game (or games) made high 7 digits then you can probably afford to spend more.

The end result of the human's AI telling them to run as far away from Batty as possible is that they gather in the corners of the map in a writhing, running, mob of humanity. And they make a fantastic noise when you kill like 10 of them at once.

So I dunno, I gotta fix this tho. I think I'll have them become unalerted once they get like 300 units away from Batty. I'll see how that works.

Sounds like some fancy modern techniques. Either way, I expect pictures tomorrow.

are you living in the Show 'The Office'?

All balanced games are just convoluted rps or coin flip. You just have to make sure the process by which the character accrues advantage is enjoyable and that for every action a player takes there's an action the opponent can take to counter it unless you're going for coin flip bigger number wins. Probably.

That is exactly what I am doing. I just update the position of the AnimateableBody3D platform directly with code though.

Does anyone know how to get scrolling inputs working on Godot? It's already on the input map, and it has no problem with recognizing M1 or M2.

Have you considered that you don't actually want to make games you just like the idea of being a game dev

You are using move_and_slide for the CharacterBody3D, right?

It's exactly as I described. I'm trying to use the scroll bar but it's not being recognized in-game despite working on the input map in the settings. Even the scroll click works.

Either find another hobby or try to focus on the other aspects of gamedeving that is not actually making a game like building systems or assets. This will even be useful since if at some point you get inspired to make a game you will already have some experience.

It doesn't show up in a polling loop. You should be handling all your gameplay event inputs inside _unhandled_input(input_event) rather than checking every frame inside _process/_physics_process
