making 150 staircases at 2 seconds per staircase is 120 times faster than spending an hour on a more complicated staircase per your numbers. Also, you can just make a couple different stair assets and copy and paste them instead, which would take approximately 2 seconds per staircase times however many staircases you would need for an entire game... 15 maybe? So yeah, 30 seconds or one hour (according to your numbers) or in other words, exactly 1/7,200 the time spent.

I only played his game because he kept telling me to play it and use it as a reference for how he wants the systems to be done, except after spending a few minutes with it, it was very clear that the systems were poorly structured and is likely the reason why he hadn't made further progress with the game for a year. For example, his entire game was just a series of Godot scenes. He had save/load buttons, but they didn't work. He probably tried something to serialize the entire scene tree and load/save that, but that's unstable and takes a bit of know-how with configuring owners to make work. He need to do a full refactor of how his scenes are constructed. Since both his game and the collab game depended on things like destructible terrain objects and player base-building, the right way to structure them would be for there to be a serializable data structure (e.g. Godot Resource or JSON) that held either data of where all terrain objects and/or what terrain objects have been destroyed, and instead of directly loading objects from a scene file, scene files need to contain loaders that read that serialized data to dynamically place terrain objects. Core design decisions like that need to be made early on, since they a have cascading implications for how the rest of the systems work.

There are two crimes that get you on the hit list:
1. Pretending to care about ALL the devs while actively ignoring some games and never ever talking about them or streaming them or etc. Obviously it's not possible to care about ALL the devs, so pretending to do that is two-faced slimy behaviour. I have been ignored for my entire participation here so I can speak from experience. Osur and horbror are both guilty of this.
2. Inner Circle denialism. The other depraved gaslighting routine that some people here like to do is try to pretend that it's not true that there are a select number of games that have reached local microceleb status and benefit immensely from it within the /agdg/ microcosm. They also love to deny the fact that game quality does not correlate in any way with the level of popularity. Lying that good games are the games that get popular here is an evil lie that exists only to prop up an unelected elite. Osur and a long line of other devs are guilty of this.

It's the willingness to lie so openly about all of this that is so disgusting about all of this. It's very womanlike behaviour, and knowing it comes from men it makes it even more horrible.

These threads have been bad lately.

I've been really demotivated recently. I haven't made significant progress for 2 weeks. I sit down every day to do something, but I'm not ticking off tasks. I'm in the process of rewriting this shield controller to improve optimisation. Base shields in my game only absorb beam weapons, so I had to write a whole collision layer system to match up shield doctrines, shield penetration on weapons and shield collisions. I have two kinds of shields, omnishields, that surround the ship and absorb energy weapons and deflectors, which only cover a small sector, but can deflect physical objects as well (you could probably also use it for ramming).

The system points for the ship is fundamentally different from the armaments, as multiple armaments can be added, whereas systems all need to be unique (can't have two shields, or two armour). I made this design decision partly due to technical limitations of adding layering shields and so on, but now thinking about it, this system makes more sense from a game balance perspective as well. I have added mods to shields to change their behaviour or functionality, but this is the current implementation of the system.

I've got 18 systems planned for the demo ranging from shields, deflectors, cloak, armour, batteries, sensors and so on. This should give players some range as to what to fit to their ship. The frigate (in the video) has 4 system slots, so their is a range of choices for defence.

I'm still working out the action system for shields, because its difficult to come up with different actions aside from 'activate'. Might try some sort of synergy system where shield actions can affect other modules.

> I sit down every day to do something, but I'm not ticking off tasks.
Take a break. Like, take an actual break. Don't sit in front of your editor/IDE, don't even open it. Don't think about your game. Take a week or two doing something else completely. Then come back to it and have at it. Sometimes you need a bit of mental relaxation, and just "I'm going to go at it at a slower pace" isn't relaxation.

Your game looks neat but something that jumps out immediately is that it's way too dark, in my opinion. I think either the ships need to be brighter / more illuminated, or the backgrounds need to be brighter, or both. It's good that they have those circle effects around it but when all you can see is the circles, not so great.

It's not that kind of game. Maximum amount of enemies is probably around 5 or 6. It's closer to FTL: Faster than Light than anything else.

I recently read an article with a quantitative definition of fun, linking it closely to flow state. Flow state is when a person is at the optimal point of their skill vs the challenge of the task they are engaged in. Fun is the average level of flow across all tasks in a session.

In an FPS or an action game, fun is generated from action or firefights, where the player is actively engaged in combat. This is why FPS focus on tight, linear game design, to keep players close to the action. In strategic or tactical games, the fun comes from thinking ahead and planning.

At its core, my game is less about the combat and more about the decisions that lead up to combat. The fun comes from build optimisation and planning for survival weighing the possible risks versus rewards.

'Fun' features:
- PoE style passive skill tree, but with pseudorandom choice
- Noita style weapon creation using building blocks to find interesting and optimised combinations
- Hades style pseudorandom choice for crew, weapons, modules, passives etc.
- FTL style ship building, choosing weapons, modules and crew
- FTL style crew management, moving crew around, putting out fires, controlling oxygen / life support
- Slay the Spire style risk vs reward node map, hunt elites or go for events?
- Asteroids style control using Newtonian physics; use objects to block missiles, push asteroids into enemies, avoid impacts
- Homeworld / The expanse style aesthetic and sound

For me at least, it combines all the best features of my favourite games PoE, Noita, Hades, FTL, StS, Homeworld etc.

Until all these parts are linked, it's difficult to demonstrate, but demo will be out soon(tm).

I'm barely into my project and already realizing how important this is. From the basics of keeping scriptables and game object's concern separated, everything spirals out. It seems very easy to outrun your headlights with game dev.
>>
>>499658138
>I've briefly looked at your page in the past and noticed that it says you're doing it to learn gamedev or something
I started ~ 3.5 years ago so it's been a while.
I'm just trying to learn everything. There's a lot I'd like to improve once I finally get to make a second game but I need to make at least 4 more enemies and their content / a lot of environment details / story bullshit before I'm done. For example, the game isn't very moddable and the art design can have issues with antialiasing / it's awkward to animate / takes way too long to make.

neutral evil lol. i didn't want to deal with slopes or the effort of making the tinier steps with 100% working walking up/down such terrain like terraria

chaotic good could work but id have to make the slopes very wide to accommodate it plus adjust the code so characters and other stuff doesn't start sliding down on such terrain which happened in the past when i tested it, in a separate project iirc to avoid messing stuff up in the actual project

5hr Progress Report - main menu is done, autosave/load working, overly complicated player physics working, an array of free assets downloaded, name chosen by ChatGPT, jungle theme chosen by ChatGPT, player animations done, horror working, scoring system is working, dinner accomplished, liquor accomplished. I need to design the course/level now. It's a platformer, it's timed, you're scored based on the time it takes to finish and the par time between checkpoints. It's pointless to only play it once, the more runs you do the better, so I need to incentivize people to try at least a few times. No death, you pop at the last checkpoint, timer never stops. Maybe I'll add unlockable cosmetics for beating some preset times or some shit like that, whatever it takes, just gotta get people to do multiple runs. This is going to be a fun Halloween game.

Hey fellas hope your games are going well. I added a cell shader as well as some basic targets to shoot at. For DD purposes Im going to add a few more basic systems but I really need some feedback before I start to add to the game.

I may am out of town during demo day but I want to try and stream for you guys next week. I have some really cool plans for this demo day but it may be a technical issue to make it happen.

In my game, the player is an amnesiac lesser god who can choose to be an adversary ( Devil-like figure ) or Good or something in between.

The player starts in his own star sanctum ( the 3D Main Menu ), with a guide who knew the player before the amnesia.

The player is being watched closely.

the player can choose to ignore the limits of his power or accept the realization of what he is.

For example, if the Player makes it to the Mountain of God at the center of the world, he will notice that his powers are not effective there. If he tries to assail certain holy men, he notices that they can ward against him while pagans cannot.

Not that anon BUT
WoW's success caused every single other MMO for the next 10 (20?) years to be infected with the same design philosophies, because everyone wanted to rake in money to be the next WoW.
The problem being those design philosophies were fine..for a single game, but absolutely boring as the standard for the industry. PvP was greatly casualized, being changed from FFA PvP to Faction vs Faction. A much bigger emphasis was put on the story and quests as the go-to method for leveling up (it was very linear), whereas before level up was more free-form of exploring areas, finding the right one for you and killing shit there while avoiding getting killed by other players. WoW also put a much stronger emphasis on "every player is the main character/hero of his story!" and made it so every class has damage and solo leveling capabilities. Before WoW it was standard for there to be exclusively support classes that just couldn't level up alone. (Some exceptions being Priests/Clerics being able to farm Undead with their holy spells.) This was fine because MMOs were a social thing, partying up was to be expected. Not so much in WoW. WoW also made the "rush to final level and end-game content" more prominent, though it was started in Everquest.

Worst of all is that innovation was completely stifled, no game tried to do something different because investors wanted the money guarantee of a game like WoW. Imagine if every single game (EVERY single one) after Minecraft was a voxel crafting game, for some good 10 years at least. You'd get sick of it.
UO, Asheron's Call, Shadowbane, Lineage 2, Ragnarok, Dark Age of Camelot, City of Heroes, Silkroad, all of these MMOs were so fucking different from each other, yet after WoW came up all of them became the same flavor of off-brand WoW.

Anyway I'm hitting the post limit and this is just morning so I'm still feeling woozy, I could go on but I need to work on my game. Resident MMO autist is signing off now.

In the 2000's i remember koreans made MMO's. They still do. And these koreans are small teams who don't know what the fuck they are doing or know much about networking so it was easy to hack the games. But did that matter? NO they still cranked out a shit ton of MMORPG's.

Anon, there are 2 layers you need to get through to be successful at gamedev. The 1st layer is getting enough technical expertise to make the game that you want to make. The 2nd layer is spending enough time on the content to make the game fun.

I'm sure you will be able to get through the 1st layer just fine with enough effort. But what is the scope for for your gameplay? What is the unique selling point? It's the creative front i worry about. If you have a plan that is manageable then cool. I still don't understand what the core gameplay loop is.

I am building up the atmosphere in the game world then I will show off the gameplay loop. The game world is divided into territories. There is this aspect of capturing territory from goblins and gaining loot for doing so. The idea is to force players together to take on these goblin clans who are numerous in number. As you stay alive longer in the game and get more powerful you attract the attention of the goblin commander, who is always tracking reports/statistics it receives from squads in the field to measure territory ownership. The commander is trying to wipe you out and achieve a steady state w.r.t world territory ownership. It has a frontline it wants to maintain. This is the most basic gameplay loop. It will expand from there. I can add a human npc faction that will spawn alongside player waves. Now suddenly the game has become a MOBA. Is it an MMORPG MOBA? Is it a new genre? I think of it like medium frequency MOBA or long-term MOBA. Its like the baseball of MOBA's. Or maybe cricket is a better comparison. A slow moving match. But then I'm also taking cues from the director system from Left4Dead. Now all these gameplay systems are implemented in CODE but I have to record a footage of an actual match in session and not freeplay. I will do that soon.

NOW EVEN ALL THAT withstanding. What is the unique selling point? Well you can just go to the website and fucking play the game if there is a server in your region. Thats it. No sign up. You can check it out for 30 seconds and then disconnect before you even spawn but HEY atleast I got your attention. And when is the last time you saw a browser game with SCALE? Many networked players and enemies? I want this spectacle. And even if you get bored, you can check back in a few weeks or months.

Clearly fucking not. Look at the amount of MMOs released in 2004, 2005, 2006, and then look at 2018, 2019, 2020, and so on.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_massively_multiplayer_online_role-playing_games
"Other kinds", I was there for the wave of WoW clones, Aion, Runes of Magic, Allods, I was there when they gutted Guild Wars into Guild Wars 2. If you're a zoomer who doesn't know anything more than WoW and FF then don't bother replying to me. Go and play 3 random MMOs from 2024 and 3 random MMOs from 2004 and see the difference between them before you talk. The only noticeable different formula in recent times is Albion Online but I'm really not fond of their weapon skill systems.

The main thing mmos had for them back in the day was that they were one of the only places to communicate with other people from around the world. Now that that's easy, it's just not as appealing. Everything is min maxed to the teeth nowadays and you're an asshole if you don't know how to do everything perfectly because you're wasting other people's time. I hope someday there is a new good old school mmo, but I highly doubt it. It will take something completely new I think to bring the genre back to its glory days.

I bet I've clocked more hours into MMOs than you have. MMOs converged on the WoW "theme park" formula because players enjoyed that the most. MMOs that try to do something different end up flopping and dying. Look at FFXIV. They tried to do something different at launch and everyone hated it, so they redid the entire game and converted it into a WoW clone. There are a ton of MMOs that you haven't heard of or played, because they suck, and many suck because they try to do something original.

Thanks for the feedback. The reason it's so dark is that it's on the outer edge of the system (furthest from the sun). Player starts on the outer edge of the system and as they move closer to the centre, the lighting increases.

I'm doing all the testing in the starter locus, so everything will look too dark. Vid related is the final locus brightness.

Very few MMO's tried to actually do something original. They took the existing base of WoW and then tried to add some gimick on top of it. But the core world design, combat design, etc is the same. They didn't do anything radically different. so the koreans just kept churning this shit out which makes a bulk of the MMO releases. And all the korean stuff is designed around making money off kids playing in PC cafes. The gameplay is all inherently built off that concept. Now stop arguing about who is the "best most legit" mmo player in the thread.
>>
>>499747059
How can that be the case? Not even WoWags enjoy WoW. They're all searching for the next "big MMO".
>>
>>499746932
The theme park meme exists because it's easier to develop content as standalone experiences. Infinite horizontal progression is a pipedream, new content has to supersede old content, they can't coexist.

>bet I've clocked more hours into MMOs than you have
No I really don't think so. Name the MMOs you played the most and at what age you started. I'm not proud of wasting my youth on video games but I'm fairly sure I have you beaten at that.
>MMOs converged on the WoW "theme park" formula because players enjoyed that the most.
The mainstream, casual audience prefers the theme park formula? Yeah agreed. Of course the majority of people will congregate to the blander, easier game. That holds true for every genre, it's not an issue and never was.
>MMOs that try to do something different end up flopping and dying.
Wrong. The problem was that for a long time, investors held expectations of their new MMOs reaching WoW numbers. A lot of MMOs wanted to take a slice of WoW's pie, compete with it and take their players, when they should have carved their own niche. It also doesn't help that some retarded subset of the WoW fanbase desperately wanted a "WoW killer" and wanted every MMO to be a better WoW (because of some personal issues they had with it), only to then complain about the game not being that before returning to WoW.

There are 1195 ACTIVE Lineage 2 private servers right now. The top 20 servers have a minimum of 50k players each. This is a game from fucking 2004 and this is just L2 because that's what I still play lately, god knows how many MU Online or other servers there are. Obviously there's still a lot of people who want to play something other than the theme park formula, it's just that developers always use WoW's 6 million subscriptions as the target to make a profit, instead of making some cheaper lower poly MMO for 50k players, which could eventually be nurtured into having their million players.

My favorite MMO is Minecraft anarchy servers

no but it would obviously be described as featuring stealth if it's a big part of it. a stealth game has stealth as one of its main mechanics; if you can optionally stealth for short stints but are never truly required to, then it isn't a stealth game.
>>
>>499747512
That's not necessarily true. I actually ideaguyed about this with some guildmates long ago, and IMO WoW-clones could easily be refactored for horizontal progression.

>>499747770
For MMOs that I've put at least 1k+ hours into, Neopets as a kid if you want to count that. MapleStory and Runescape circa 2003 to 2007. WoW BC/WotLK 2007 to 2010. I hopped around a few dozen MMOs 2010 to 2017, but I don't think I broke 1k hours in any of those. Maybe 1k+ in Blade and Soul or Skyforge, but barely. I mainly played PoE during this time, if you want to count that as an MMO. OSRS in 2017-2018, FFXIV in 2018, WoW Classic throughout Covid, back to OSRS in 2021-2022.

You NEED the mainstream casual audience in your MMO. MMOs are fun to more hardcore players because they are filled with filthy casuals that they pick on.

What investors think doesn't really matter as much as what the players think, since MMOs are generally designed to only be fun when it has a large enough player base. If your game requires investors to sustain it after release, it's not a good game.

At the end of the day, content is king and a fresh MMO just simply can't compete in terms of content with older MMOs.

Yeah I can see why you'd think that. We called people like you carebears back in the day. If you've never played UO, Shadowbane, Asheron's Call or L2 of course you'll never understand how non-theme park MMOs could succeed. I might as well explain snow to someone living in the jungle. This is a downside of anonymous arguing I guess.

>At the end of the day, content is king
Spoken like a classic wowbab wanting to be taken on the content rollercoaster every expansion. Player interaction is king. People lose their lives to fucking mobas with the exact same map and exact same characters every time just because the player interactions are different. (Speaking of, mobas also did a blow to the MMO industry but that's for another thread.)
We can quite literally never see eye to eye, you just grew up with an entirely different set of MMO experiences, it's like someone who only plays Minecraft for creative building mode and someone who only plays it for survival mode, we like the same game but for entirely different reasons.

>>499752042
You can stop acting elitist over being an old fuck who can't separate nostalgia for an experience unique to its time over genuine quality.

There's a reason those games are either dead or mostly dead, and that they don't make games like them anymore.

And yes, I'm an old fart who was around for those as well.
>>
>>499752042
MOBAs have 100+ different characters and items each, and new ones get added all the time. That's content. Most people would rather play a game and be done with it after some time instead of playing the same thing over and over again. Games don't need to last forever.

Either way, you'll never make an MMO, and I won't be either any time soon.

People still play those old games right now my dude. I never played Ragnarok or Mabinogi as a kid for example and had a blast playing it with /v/ on private servers.
>There's a reason those games are either dead or mostly dead
There's multiple reasons. I covered some of them.
What am I even being elitist about? Do you even know what I'm arguing about? Did you keep up with the reply chain? Or do you actually disagree with the notion that a MMO could "succeed" even if it doesn't follow the WoW formula?

>>499752871
I played Dota 2 during its hayday, the rate at which new items or heroes were added in 2013-2015 was glacial. For all intents and purposes you played mostly the same heroes over and over ,and it didn't stop me from putting 5k hours on multiple accounts.

It's obviously not exactly the same, but before Discord, guild leaders needed to pay for a vent/TS, and you generally didn't talk to your internet friends except through the in-game chat, a forum, or IRC. Now, the entire social paradigm has shifted with Discord as the default for everyone. Everyone carries a smartphone with the discord app and takes their internet friends with them wherever they go. Guildies now hang out much more and chat outside of game-specific activities. "Guilds" are also more commonly multi-game nowadays.

texel density is fucked on the right? weird, I used a UV checker grid to try and get it reasonably consistent, and gave a bit more space to the bigger sections
I thought the left's (original asset) approach to texturing would fuck up the texel density more if anything
also why the fuck doesn't the grid checker make it so each square is a pixel, I set it to 128x128 and got fuck all squares, and setting it to 1280x1280 still only gives me 40 squares across

You have to remember, there are times you as the developer know everything but it won't be fun for other players. Yes, even if you were reincarnated without knowledge of your game, you might think it sucks because it lacks a tutorial or it doesn't properly show you the mechanics or you should've cut out mechanics.

You need to negotiate between the new player experience and what you want.

I keep reliving my memories of my first game making it and thinking I finally figured it out and I'm going to be a game dev for the rest of my career. how naive of me to think I can simply continue to be an outlier. to think that my success wad because of my skill and hard work. in fact those were just the price of the lottery ticket. now I'm living in my cousin's garage (actually an ancillary room which is nice and has a cot and A/C and a toilet) trying to repeat my success. instead I keep failing even harder.

texel density literally stops mattering if you start using texture filtering like every single PC game did, instead of trying to copy console graphics which looked horrendous
console cultists need a reality check. This isn't 2003 anymore. We live in a time when we now know for a fact that consoles were astroturfed garbageware and have no merits

The pic you posted is the perfect example why this shit doesn't matter. This is not a still frame the players look at for a long time, it's part of a dynamic scene where things are happening. You know where people will be looking at? At the characters in the middle. >to prioritize pixels where they matter"
that made sense when they were working with limited memory and had to make the best of what they could with the hardware they were deving the game for

doesn't much make sense now when you can just have a decently uniform texel density across all your assets that suits the style you're going for and the game will be rendered at high res so differences in texel density when using low res textures is very easily visible like in that one MGS pic that was posted

it wasn't as big of an issue on ps1 because the games were rendered at such low resolutions and the ps1 had its rendering flaws

your "proof" is also retarded because it's a model from a modern high def game using high res textures and texture filtering so the level of texel differences it has won't be visible in game

It's been about 12 hours since I started on the design document. The level is done, the secrets are done, achievements are done, all the story work is done, I need to find and add some sounds to help round things out and the level could use a thick layer of aesthetic polish, but that's it, the game is feature-complete and playable and might actually be fun for masochists and try-hards.

You can work for 3650 days on your game and it might still suck. You need to get regular feedback and see if people are interested in your game, and learn when to pivot or make something else if you don't get any interest

Hard work is important, but hard work on the wrong thing will not produce value.

Did you even read the post you're replying to? That's a 3d model from a game designed for 1080p. All the other discussion has been related to pretty much games from the PS1/N64 era where texel size matters in the presentation.

The worst type of crabbing I see is the "hugboxing", people encouraging games like marmoreal to keep being worked on despite 0 interest from steam users. It's hard to give advice in situations like these but telling him to keep working on it after 10 years with these results is insane.
>>
madodev, I will surpass you!

>>
Madodev got angry and is now crabbing everyone.

Surely plenty of people were giving negative feedback, too. In the end it’s Marmo’s choice to keep going.
>>
>>499763878
I don't like your gold and purple color scheme and why are the astronauts goat men?
>>
>>499767851
Your mentality is based on the wrong assumption that everyone in an amateur community has the ultimate goal of getting Steam users to play a game.
>>
>>499767651
Resolution doesn't change anything about what you do in this subject.
>>
ugggh can't they get rid of all the ugly braces in c++? what if instead of { } we just put all that code in a nice cute circle?
>>
>>499767729
Attractive characters based on strong relatable stereotypes without being too stereotypical. They also have to be done tastefully so that the attractive part doesn't turn into coomerpandering. Like original Overwatch lineup. Sure there's some nice butts in there but dick hard must coom isn't the first thing that pops up when you see those designs. Those original OW designs walked that fine line which led to their popularity among the fanartists, cosplayers and SFM crowd.
>>
>>499768235
It absolutely does.
>>
>>499765581
>doesn't much make sense now

There is always a cutting edge to technology and if you're riding it then it will always make sense. Now you have to decide between where to use 4k textures, 2k textures, 1k textures etc. Characters will always get priority over the environment.
>>
>>499768183
People like that exist (pomao, cris?) but they're a minority here and even if you do you can just release on itch.
>>
>>499768453
Nope. You're simply too stupid to get it. Like a blind man teaching how to paint.
>>
>>499767729
Make them sexually attractive, but less valuable as humans, add a fetish twist, this is the formula.

Pick a game, look at the fanart. Deadlock, what's everyone drawing? Purple feet, and that nasty gargoyle creature with the sexy voice. Hottest TF2 character? The one hiding in the rubber suit who you can imagine is female. In all of Dragonball/DBZ/etc, what female character is consistently rated the fan favorite? Is it a human woman? Videl? Chi-Chi? Bulma? Nope, surveys say it's Android 18, the blonde robot who will totally love you for the iPhone charger in your pants. Hottest visual novel of all time? Katawa Shoujo, fight me.

Make them sexually attractive, but less valuable as humans, add a hint of fetish. Make 'em robots, zombies, foreign, crippled, retarded, emotionally broken, #victim, barefoot, cries constantly, they can even just be kind of obnoxious so long as it's the kind of obnoxious that makes you want to stick your dick in it.
>>
>>499768492
Itch doesn't offer the same features as Steam. I'm particularly interested in Steam networking/matchmaking features and the ability to turn couch co-op games into online multiplayer seamlessly.

It's real simple.

none of the paid assets are coherent enough if you're going to spend money that's the problem
even worse, half of the packs are in early access

i have no fucking idea why any developer would unironically support this
you're literally at a stop and the final assets can take years to come
