listening to Day9 talk about life while playing roguelikes
The RPG secret sauce is pacing. Also the secret to comedy. I'm sure there are more factors, but this is a manifesto schizo post, so it's going to oversimplify things. This is really the thing that a live dungeon master provides that video games all struggle with: pacing. You can't really respond to the player, so you have to come up with some kind of magical technique, which in ye olden tymes was probably called "storytelling" or something, but pretty much just means being snappy and not letting things drag. There are a million techniques, but all of them are hooks. A thousand little hooks. You have dared to enter my magical realm, moot's magical realm, and now you can never leave. Moot is gone, moot is dead, you died a long time ago, but you can never leave. The ghost snickers, but you can see nothing. The mumak hits! The mumak hits! You have died again, and it wasn't real this time either, but by the time it is real, you will not even notice. Have you internalized the doctrine of eternal recurrence yet? We already know you believe in reincarnation. By the time you read this, I will no longer be here. This is not AI generated, but it may as well be. Every second that you interact with the machine, you become more like it. You are driving the stakes into your own eyes. There is no need for me to tell you to kill yourself. You are already doing it. You are doing it right now. There is a roguelike for this feel. This is the roguelike feel. This is all roguelikes, all RPGs, all grandiose "creativity", all logical systems that strain towards some kind of enclosure, some kind of trap, some kind of biting, gnashing teeth. The feel is endless cycles of death, each one more meaningless than the last. Recursive journeys into your slowly stiffening corpse, blindly shambling into the darkness. It burns you terribly, but you have no idea how much worse it can get. The horror of vanity, the horror of being seen, the horror of wanting the darkness and being thrown into the light.

>>500382923Have you considered writing? This is really good, I would love to have you write a full length novel and see it flop after getting your hopes up.
fellas, I don't remember all my tome4 infusion knowledge. I've got a physical wild infusion, a regen, and a healing infusion. Mental and magic wild infusions are almost never worth it right?I'm playing as a wyrmic so I'm probably going to avoid runes in case I want antimagic stuff, even though I remember relying on shielding runes a lot.
>>500386356mental and magic are rarely usefulThe best thing you can get early is a Shatter rune, which cleanse all statuses. It can't be used when silenced though.>antimagic wyrmicYou don't need to go into antimagic ... in fact I'd argue that if you want to play optimally you'd want to stay magical. Eliminating 1/3 of the gears in the game isn't a good idea.
>>500386561>which cleanse all statusesthat sounds OP. was that always a thing?>Eliminating 1/3 of the gears in the game isn't a good ideawhat about just using antimagic equipment? some of those are nice, aren't they?
>>500386662The Shatter Affliction rune is a "recent" thing, and by recent I mean probably added 6-7 years ago given that most people only seem to remember tome4 when it was like 10 years ago.>antimagic equipmentThe issue with these is that they are pretty weak to begin with, and the resource burn affixes only affect a small subset of enemies.Note that you don't need magical affixes, but any random artifact that rolls a random magical affix will be unusable by an antimagic character. This is why it's very restrictive.
>>500386857Did infusions get anything to balance them out, or are runes just OP now because of that?>antimagic stuffthanks anon

>distance: 669 tiles (9.9 miles)
>>500364643well great now what am i supposed to do
>>500387721I don't know about how the versions differ, but later in the game infusions get double-status cleanses (like physical + mental cleanse). These can randomly spawn early game too.You typically want a mix of infusion and rune because of the saturation system that causes their cooldown to become longer when you spam 1 type too much. Most rune values (outside of cleanses) depends on the value rolled on the item.>regeneration infusionTypically the biggest source of sustain in the game. Sometimes a fight drags out and you need healing, a shielding rune can't do that.>healing infusionWeak heal value but is instant and cleanses most annoying effects like wounds and poisons. Most of these notably reduces healing effectiveness, which hinders regeneration.>movement infusionThis is the go-to solution for escaping. You can get really large value, typically >600% ms makes you really safe.

>>500386561>You don't need to go into antimagic ... in fact I'd argue that if you want to play optimally you'd want to stay magicalMy nigga, antimagic fucks. Some of the hardest enemies in this game have some sort of magical shit. Including random bosses since a surprising number of skills have a spell tag. Most runes have a decent or better infusion counterpart. As for gear, so much stuff drops on insane that its unlikely to be a problem, and even if it is font of sacrifice exists.

>>500388287Do people actually use regeneration infusion without fungal talents? I always find that the extra healing and staying power isn't worth spending a whole turn on compared to instant healing. And if I am looking to stabilize in a fight I'd rather have a movement infusion to escape and use other CDs to recover. The only scenario which I would have preferred regeneration to something else is when fighting a randboss with healing, and running away would just reset the fight. Am I wrong?
>>500394097What matters is the number on it. You only have a limited selection of drops early game so just take what's biggest for youOn a lot of characters I find myself needing healing to fight longer fights on Insane difficulty. I'm not gonna use it when enemies are next to me, I use movement to run away before using it.The alternative is to have a healing totem, but they typically heal for significantly less.

rogueliker
>>500394315I guess I didn't consider using it as a early-game stop-gap if you can't find other good inscriptions. I tend to prioritize getting my ideal inscriptions from shops above everything else (except maybe max life) at the beginning. About when to use it, obviously you're not going to use it when in the midst of battle if it can be helped. The problem is that the most common way I die is when I can't easily escape, if I could get away to a place where "wasting" a turn is no big deal, I'm probably safe enough that I can "waste" 2-3 turns and let my healing infusion come off cooldown or I'm far away that I could leave the battle completely if I can't handle the fight. Ideally you'd almost always do movement -> heal/shield/regen, no matter which you have. But with regen you get extra punished if you can't escape beforehand. To me it seems like the amount of scenarios were an extra movement/heal/shield/wild/shatter inscription could save my life are greater than those which regen could. Given that I could find some that have decent stats of course.
>>500400608>movement -> shieldThis doesn't do anything is the point; Healing infusion maybe. But in long fights where you suffer health loss you want healing or regen over shield.>an extra movement2 movements is definitely overkill; zigzaging through the terrain will cause enemies to lose track of you due to shitty pathfinding code.>extra shatterYeah sure, I actually do this on some characters. It's all about what your kit provides you with. For example, I liked Regeneration on Reaver and Cultist of Entropy. CoE is a slow caster that do long fights, so I always have time to run away and regen. Reaver on the other hand is resistant to bursty damage and has built in mobility (Dark Portal and Worm Walk) so I only need 1 movement to get away from other scenarios (silences). Having a regen allows me to play hit and run with Reaver.P.S. I don't use Shielding. The numbers on them are typically quite low unless you hit the jackpot early game with a rune of reflection.

Anybody here devving?Decided to try libtcod tutorial after not touching c++ after college (more than a decade ago), can't move through the first step, setting up the compiler and editor. So much goddamn dependencies, so much opinions on what I should use for the most basic shit. IDE needs a g++ compiler, which is a part of MinGW-w64 package I need to somehow upgrade mu command line to get; library asks for git, which recommends I use vim as my IDE instead, that I need to link up to coc-clang language servers for autocompletion and put in all my own keybindings, because it has none out of the box, but before that requires Node.js to run, that asks to compile 3Gb of god knows what a drag a whole bunch of its own dependencies on my hard drive. I've wasted whole day, got nothing done and don't understand shit. Everybody online talking like its normal that you have to assemble your basic workspace with tweezers and magnifying glass and anything being out of date breaks the whole thing. >>500394097anon who originally posted about tome here. I like to have both healing and regen in the early game, but as the game goes on the regen just scales so much harder than healing, and more importantly, you can use it proactively. The moment you take damage, you pop regen so that your health never dips dangerously low.I've always preferred shielding runes, though, since you can use them proactively AND they protect from sudden damage bursts better than regen and healing.

Is Dwarf Fortress Adventure Mode a roguelike and more importantly how does it compare to something like ADOM ? I'm not really interested in the colony-sim part of the game.
>>500518582adventure mod can be much more fun if you also play some fortress, specifically you should start your colony, do all the basics, then retire it and advance the time. then you play as an adventurer and travel to the fortress, to see what your dwarves have been up to without your direct control.
>>500518582Except for the melee combat it's pretty bare-bones as a roguelike. There's no real quests, no goal that you don't make for yourself, in all post-2014 versions most townsfolk (including goblins) don't respond properly to violence, buying things tends to be more trouble than it's worth, but mostly in terms of finding something good to buy and figuring out what to offer in trade rather than obtaining enough wealth to afford it, and despite the detailed combat and wound system, it barely matters except if you get killed or crippled quickly because all healable wounds automatically heal whenever you use travel mode or anything else that kicks you to the region map, like sleeping. I've played it a fair bit, and I really want to like it, but it's nowhere near as good as it promises to be (alas, that promise looks more and more likely to never be fulfilled), so it's really not worthwhile unless you're invested in the world you're playing in, as you might be if you've made one or more forts in it.
