I've been adding a test scene which quickly calculates the distance needed to make each hit. I load each move and it the scene will produce the numbers needed.I can then use the number for the cpu fighters so they know how close to be when striking.Plus if I tweak any animations/hitboxes I can re-run the scene and get the new figure.
We're entering a new Indie renaissance of the likes of the first 'hipster quirky chiptune' age of Indie. It's going to be massive.Sure, we've had some hits in the interim age, but I'm talking Minecrafts and Stardews coming out. I'm talking new e-celebs being made. There are people here who will be named among Notch and Eric Barone.

Maybe they made "ok" money with it on release, but to make a living on games like UPT they'd have to be maintaining that hardcore burnout level of production ALL the time and EVERY one of their one month slop games would have to do well enough to keep them afloat for the next month. And I mean let's be realistic, UPT isn't even paying their bills for the month it took them to make it, it's basically just proving to themselves that they can make something off game dev."Just make lots of small shitty games" isn't a viable business strategy.I hope they make it, but if this is their business model moving forwards it's not gonna work out.

LETS GO AGDG! DEV TIME!! !!!!!!!!!!!https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dM2MAOavweU
Whoops this was supposed to be a projectile not an explosion
>>500371382Well, on the technical side of things, you're going to need more than that. Any strategy game is going to be running a thousand different variables, a lot of which interact with each other through different systems, and these systems are subsystems in larger systems that are essentially games within your game themselves. Because a 4X match basically has a player playing several different games at once for the duration of the match. It's going to be a really complicated and large project. But nothing is impossible when you break it into small parts and plan well.On the game design side, you can clearly define your starting goals for the basic 4X game to construct a basis unto which you'll start building your own ideas. If you can define these goals and break them down into steps, you can actually start writing code and jutting down variables. Optimization is very important as you will rape the player's CPU if you don't know what you're doing. But if this is your first major game dev project, I'm not gonna tell you to give up or anything, just know that it's a pretty gargantuan task. The Internet has a lot of good resources to help you along.
>>500371861i got you, babe

I haven’t heard such nonsense in a long time. 1. Game engines have been available and free for at least 15 years, if not more. 2. Free assets are just a pile of junk made by school kids and students, used in thousands of other trashy games. They’re good enough for prototyping, but in the growing competitive market—which you yourself mentioned at the start—using pre-made assets is the equivalent of shooting yourself in the foot. 3. Only a clueless newbie would take AI as a real development tool. Considering that AI’s context window usually doesn’t exceed the size of a few classes, it’s useless for any project with a complexity level even slightly above a school kid’s Snake game knockoff. 4. The fact that there will be more trash, making it harder to promote your game so that anyone even sees it, somehow leads you to the opposite conclusion that this is a good thing. That’s just a facepalm moment. 5. Dude, what planet are you even living on? Are you sure you’re a game developer? These days, many studios with million-dollar budgets are taking the indie niche because they have professional teams and money, and they can achieve in a year what would take you 10 years. That’s what’s being called “indie” nowadays. Take Dave the Diver, for example. Saying that a game of that caliber can be made by a fresh graduate using free assets in today’s hyper-competitive market… you’ve either lost your mind, or you’re deliberately trying to ruin the lives of young guys and girls who might believe such blatant lies.
I've maybe come up with something.>game is PvEI'm not much of a PvP guy, and recent years have also shown that people want PvE games way more than PvP games. It could be a sad side effect of matchmaking killing PvP and you could actually make a fun PvP game if you just made it old school and server based, but who knows.>4 basic DnD character classes with unlockable subclasses for each to choose from with each specializing in different thingsThose being Ranger, Warrior, Wizard and Rogue.>gameplay is drop-in, drop-outI hate the time investment modern games tend to require. You join and you play a full 40 or 50 minute game or you get nothing. You could also fail at the last second and just waste an hour of your time.>hand-crafted maps with a publicly available map editor to go with it>a game director that controls enemy spawns based on server population and difficultyIn case the game is dead or you're a loner. So the basic idea is this:You pick a map (or maps) and queue. You are dropped into an active server that is running that map. There may be other people in there already, up to 64 players, or something like that. You pick a class and go. Class can be changed any time you die.The map is a dungeon that can be played from start to finish. You spawn either at the point with the most players or at the latest unlocked checkpoint, not sure. There is however a time limit to completing the dungeon, completing challenges and checkpoints gives more time. The dungeon is full of respawning enemies and challenges with a final boss at the end. Nothing is forcing your hand to do anything in particular, you're free to do whatever you want and gain xp from just killing enemies, but the best rewards are gained from completing the dungeon and killing the boss, hopefully encouraging people to work together and beat the dungeon.Once the dungeon is completed, a vote is called to either restart the current dungeon at a higher difficulty level, or switch to another dungeon.

>>500375389I'm sorry or I'm glad that happened
>>500374896Projectiles should be checking. Otherwise if you want to add other collideable objects, you would have to make every entity check for every possible thing that can hit them even when those things aren't currently in-game
>>500375392why grind for anything if there's no world?
>>500375392you should try some mmos before starting
>>500375653It's actually a big part of what I'm going for. I enjoyed dungeons in WoW and FFXIV but I never liked how much of a serious time and effort investment they were, and being stuck in an MMO, it means that if you played the dungeon you had to be at your A-game because people were there to do the most optimal thing in order to grind a very specific thing. It was too serious to be fun for me.I'm hoping to remedy the overt seriousness by making it chaotic by upping the playercount and making people not hard-dependent on each other but still being able to help each other. I'm taking a page out of Helldivers' book on this one because ideally the gameplay would be chaotic and fun but a skilled player could take control of the situation.>>500375902Why did people play games back in the old days when there wasn't really anything to grind towards? I'm hoping that the game might just be fun enough for people to keep playing and hell, if there has to be something to grind towards it might as well be cosmetics. Something to show off.>>500376017I've played enough MMOs, I don't feel like grinding any more..
>>500376220There was a world which was basically a digital chat room with fantastical set pieces. Auctions, community, etc. You'd have to make the actual gameplay so fun and with such a high skill ceiling, that people are fine with just playing instanced dungeons standalone the game.
>>500375103I watched a youtube video of it when it was mentioned before but I'm not sure what I can learn from it. I'll take another look.>>500375818good looking out. I think I went that way for the same reason. I don't want environmental objects to have to do collisions checks, they don't even have update functions. So makes sense to gather all the logic in the projectileI'm so close to having Batty be hit and hurt by projectiles but I have to make her Crash function more generic and I'm too tired. >>500377192try warhammer vermintide it might be what you want
>>500376916make it so good they can't ignore it and they hire you to make it for them.
>>500376895Hell yeah, put some Marvel in there as well.Really though, you're right, the actual moment-to-moment gameplay has to be top-notch in order for the game to even stand a chance. I think open playtesting with a lot of communication would be my best bet, but this project seems like it definitely needs a pre-existing community or fanbase that would be willing to try it in the numbers required for the game to work.I think I might have something that could actually work here, but it just needs too many players and no first indie project with 0 establishment in the industry will ever get that kind of engagement. I might throw this on the slow burner and occasionally throw in some ideas onto the drawing board and make some small assets when I feel like it, and work on some of my single player games to get things properly started.
>>500377304you'd have to make something near to be called the 'chess' of Instanced PVE experience. Just a pure self evidently fun game.I say this because MMOs all have PVE and also community and world. There's definitely something to:1. No time investment. Just hop in and play PVE. MMOs can be a grind fest at times.2. Very good PVE gameplay where it is self evidently fun, like Mordhau is for PVP. Again, as long as you want to play it. If you want to play it, someone else will. Recently my mind came up with a game-idea I have since a long time, but I wonder if you might be interested in itIt's basically a RTS game like Warcraft and Starcraft, but with the economic mechanics of an Anno or the Settler gameIf this sounds highly ambitious and a mess in the making, yes I know, but I don't careThe 4 playable factions (so far) would be......Humans: Basically modern day humans with a slightly futuristic overtone (they at least know how to use portals or such to a certain degree)No idea how far I go with the futuristic stuff (they may or may not have mechs) but yeah, that would be humans...Fantasy Faction: A conglomerate of different fantasy races (an "alliance" you can say) from elves, dwarves, etc., no humans toughTheir "speciality" is that you can theoretically focus only on one race, or do a mix of them, but different races often don't like each other (don't expect full blown "race-wars" tough, maybe a deficit in economy at best)While mixing sounds like a bad idea then, it isn't always bad to diversify, one example (so far) might be that Elves aren't good at producing iron, but their higher tier units might need that too, while the dwarfs are masters of producing it...Aliens: No idea in which direction I go with them, will they be either completly focused on organic troops like the Zergs, or highly advanced ones like the Protoss, but I guess it's gonna be a mix of it...Devils: Demons and such, no idea what they will be about, but imagine your average demons and devils and suchAnd yeah, anyone who might like that idea?Or even stealing itPic more or less unrelated
>>500387221It's an ok premise. I wouldn't buy the game for it, but it wouldn't stop me from buying the game either.
>>500386784>>500386913this, you literally just have to force the player to do the correct move 2-3 times and from that point forward the player will use that move. it's that simple. how some devs still think players can "ignore" a proper tutorial is bizarre. a real tutorial cannot be ignored. whatever you're doing isn't really a tutorial. understand this. a tutorial CANNOT be completed without doing the thing the developer wants the player to learn.
>>500387221>And yeah, anyone who might like that ideaThe cost to execute the idea being fun is likely more than the revenue it could generate. Kids don't play RTS and RTS players are unwilling to move from their favourite RTS since SC2 came out.

>>50038722175% of your game design is random ideaguying factions, this is not a large basis to judge anything on.Even though it’s an obvious design, an "RTS with complex eco" has never really been done – perhaps because getting your very brittle production lines interrupted by attacks is not very fun. I mean, Anno is truly an RTS, you can always play that. Maybe the reason it works in Anno is precisely the islands design which means that you will mostly get interrupted at sea, but seldom invaded on your islands, so threat model is more refined. In the same vein, Settlers had a mechanic to discourage run-by, making it so combat mostly happens at the borders. Northgard is a game with relatively complex eco (at least a bit more complex than AoE, let’s say), but no real mechanics to protect your eco, which makes for multiplayer matches where eco management plays a very small role, as everyone spends most of the time on only 5-10 workers, having to keep army maxed out all the time. I think the D.O.R.F. guys have plans to make eco more complex, we will see where that ends.

>>500393430it looks like the kind of game a delusional anon would make
>>500393430That's his game until proven otherwise.
>>500393684He is right though, the term Indie has been co-opted by entities that are obviously NOT indie, way too many companies making 1 million+ per year call themselves indie nowadays.

Keep coping. There is no separate indie and AAA market. The vast majority of customers will buy from either, so long as the game is good. You are competing against all video games in your genre regardless of their production value, whether you like it or not.

No, I'm not telling you what genres they are; thirdies browse these threads and we don't need them infesting the good genres. White men will know what kinds of games I'm talking about. This is the best time to make games.
>>500392762Dude you are PROFITING from shit being so cheap. It’s the same with all automation / efficiency gains everywhere, some people that cannot put 1+1 together want to ban it, because "it makes us poorer" because it "destroys work places" – but these exact savings are then seen in products becoming cheaper and cheaper.I’m a big corpo hater myself, but really the issue with them is they run the government. Whenever they sell you a law as being "against the big corpos" you can rest assured it hits the small guy even harder. E.g. GDPR. Also what really should be abolished is copyright, so that even (You) may make the next Pkmn without getting rekt by Nintendo.

>>500393840>and with a bit of elbow grease you can get as good as that guyNah, not really. Look up the guy on twitter, his is actual autistic pixel art placed manually that takes months to make while yours looks like a resized drawing with a dithering layer placed on top. It's nowhere near the same, and that "elbow grease" to get it to look like his stuff would take you nearly the same amount of time to fix.Of course to make a game you don't need this level of art, I'm just saying you'd need to train an entire models on hundreds of his works and get someone on his level to touch it up to do that kind of shit, a generic pixel art model will never get you that.

i dunno who needs to hear this. but just use unity, just make a normal game and just do a bit of work every day. that's the sane and enjoyable dev path.don't overthink, don't wait for great ideas, don't enginedev. just make something normal and try to improve it over time. genre doesn't even matter.pick city builder, shooter, arpg, survival sim, bullet hell, whatever... just pick something and try to improve it day by day. just try to do it well. try to become good at it.and don't start a new project before you finished the full game. the only reason you should ever start a new project is when your current one is finished.

Many here seem to forget it's an AMATEUR community. >>500394489>these exact savings are then seen in products becoming cheaper and cheaper.name one product that has gotten cheaper in the last 50 years. you can't. everything is more expensive now when measured in real people's PURCHASING POWER. 50 years ago you could buy a house on one blue collar job wage. now you can't. 50 years ago groceries were cheap, now they are expensive. so in what world are any efficiency gains being passed on to the consumer? doesn't happen. efficiency gains like any other gains are turned into profits for corporations and banks while most of the population becomes poorer.inb4 some misleading averages. medians only, no cheating.

I'd also agree with cars getting much stronger acceleration and more luxurious features like electric windows, heated seats and such as basically standard features in the last few decades. and more recently automatic transmissions that are actually good.but at the end of the day I don't think those isolated actual improvements make up for the fact that I will never own a house. This is an actual photo of Gabe Newell in the middle of his daily 4chan run. Every morning, before he starts the daily meeting on how to further screw over Artifact fans (attendance is mandatory for every Valve employee and takes about three hours), he visits /g/'s /gedg/, /vg/'s /agdg/, and checks /v/ for game dev threads. Each game he sees in these threads, he checks if it's on Steam, and if it is, he manually suppresses it in the algorithm to make sure nobody can see it without specifically searching for it.This particular photo is believed to be the exact moment he nuked Marmoreal.Do NOT post your games here. You have been warned.

>>500404481I disagree if it's your first game only because it's far too easy to say "This doesn't feel as good as I thought it would be, I'm just not going to finish" for literally every single project. Taking one idea all the way from conception to release will prove to yourself that you can do it, then whatever next game idea you have, you'll have an idea about each stage of the process. I say that because 90%+ of posters here are project hoppers who are just one idea away from their perfect game they will actually release.

>>500406368Retard cope advice. Plenty of one-game devs flop hard (see Marmo or Bokube), and plenty of project hoppers make it (see YOMIH).
>>500406083>women say one thing and do anotherno surprises there
>>500406683Oh anecdotes of success and failure, guess you better just keep never finishing any projects and instead keep waiting for that one really, really good idea. You will never release a game, you don't have what it takes to see it through to the end.
>>500406683Bokube is out?
>>500406368I see your point. Dropping shouldn't be done if it's your skill that was preventing it from being good. It's still important to work on something you can finish. The idea of "just finish it" is good but many go for stupid unrealistic ideas when they're starting out.To use one of ours as an example I wanna say trainwiz should've dropped Underspace like a year into it and made some smaller games to get better before trying to make it again. His sticking with a game he couldn't handle ended up not going so well.
>>500406647Dial 8
>>500406882trainwiz is megalomaniacal though. Underspace was already his idea of a small little game to get started. The actual game he wants to make is a crazy Morrowind space trains game.
>>500403091>fanbases>built on "small shitty games"You think like marnix
>>500406882That's fair. It'll definitely come down to the reason you want to drop. Overscope/unattainable goals are legitimate. But if you've got a small scope game that could realistically be finished and you project hop because of something like "it doesn't feel as fun as I thought", then you're NGMI.
>>500406878>Outstanding wishlists: 1.2kHe knows it will flop hard, and so he coping by never releasing it, even though it was done years ago.>>500406847Project are never finished. Only released and dropped. There's always more you can do, but you need to learn to move on to greener pastures. If you're going to fail, you should fail fast.>>500406882>>500407107The thing you're missing is that beginners absolutely suck at designing games. You learn so much in the process of just like making game, that if you're not retarded, you'll very quickly understand that the game that you designed as a beginner is a terrible idea, and that once you have it, you should take your newfound gamedev knowledge to design a better game.

Some products you buy might come with disclaimer that they might have some scratches or imperfections. Flour sold in stores is allowed to have 0.35% of ash and rat shit in its composition. My game also has a 1% crash rate which has been accounted for. Imperfection is what make us human.
