>>502260858In fairness, physical strength doesn't matter when your opponent dodges everything and Bowser tends to be taken by the environment as much as Mario. the closest to an exception are the RPGs, where Wario never shows up and Bowser's strength is inconsistent (sometimes he's a tutorial boss, sometimes he's a mid-late game boss, sometimes he's a final boss, sometimes he's a playable character, etc).
Character power levels are whatever Nintendo sees as convenient for the story they want to tell. Trying to guage an exact amount of strength is kind of dumb.

It's just Wario and Bowser are practically unkillable, so Mario has to just knock them out and defeat them when they're big bads for the day.Donkey kong has scared bowser in mario party, and has punched the moon out of orbit, and Yoshi has dealt with the biggest form of Bowser to this day (baby bowser funnily enough) by just throwing his eggs with great strength, so they probably are all are around the same level. Mario and Bowser have way higher showings of strength if we count the RPGs, but Wario is still immortal so he'd probably still be fine. If they ever included Wario and Waluigi in the RPGs, they'd probably be around Mario and Luigi's level, just a bit weaker since they'd lose a first boss fight to them.

But playing post SM64 games I think those games are average compared to earlier games. Certainly before indies started spamming great platformers the situation was grim with few good platformers. To the point that shit like Madagascar was considered one of the classics of the sixth generation. I feel that late games, especially the 3D sub-series and NSMB, show these problems. Cat Mario could be one of the best Mario power ups but it has fatal flaws like the fact that you can't wall run after wall jumping. Meaning you can die if you spend your first wall run. Compare this to the new Tanooki which has less utility than its SMB3 version if you hit a bump you can continue to float which makes it better than cat mario despite the highly gimped moveset. Also Auto-Scrollers

Reminder you DIDNT beat the first Super Mario Bros if you used warp pipes or rewind. Save slotes are only permitted if used at the start of levels and strictly as saving, if used to replenish a life or power up, you didnt beat the game
>3d World3D world progression system made me stop playing the game. Meanwhile I like the NSMBU pick up and play style I boot up the game and play as many levels as I want without worrying about fetching stars. Every time I dread not getting stars in the boring ass auto scroller stages or any other stage. The worst part is that it's a multiplayer game the game actually wants 4 people to play since it ties progression to that.
As i get older i really appreciate Miyamoto’s philosophy when it comes to 2D Mario. I have so little time and mental energy for video games that these basic games really have appeal now. I dont want to play a massive game that i will forget the controls if i take a break. I also dont really want a big story. I have enough terrors and exhaustion in my real life that i have zero emotional consideration left over to give to fictional characters. I just want something happy and fun to help repair me. Saving a Princess is perfect actually, just something simple i can project onto. Of course ill be hype for the next 3D Mario but there really is something to be said for simple 2D Mario
